JOMC 161: Visual Design Fundamentals - Graphic Design and Web
by Mary Theresa Rose Wahlmeier
Week 1: Wireframes
Our first assignment
was to make a lowquality wireframe
for our final website.
Seeing as I had never
made a wireframe
or a website before,
my wireframe was
pretty bare and
unprofessional.
My second wireframe was actually made after I started designing my website with HTML and CSS. It’s a better
representation, and it includes the colors and fonts I used for my website.
Week 2: Icon, Monogram, and Business Card
Next, we made
monograms, which
we used to make an
icon and a business
card. My first drafts
were very simple
- black and white,
with lots of curleycues.
When I revised, I added color (as suggested in my peer reviews), and also got rid of some of the excess curls on the icon
to make it more ledgible. I also added more decoration to the business card and used different fonts.
Week 3: Syllabus Cover
For my syllabus
cover, I decided to
try to incorporate
as
many
visual
elements of this
class as I could, so
it would be a visual
overview of the class.
I used thumbnails,
sketches, a computer,
paper, pens, and a
notebook to show
some of the tools
used in this class, and
I chose fonts that
looked handwritten
or stamped for a
better feel.
For my second draft, I tried to color-correct the green tints out of the hands and crumpled papers, and I adjusted the
text in places so that it aligned better.
Week 4: Postcard
This assignment was
one of my favorites.
I made a postcard
Valentine. I wanted
the postcard to
look like an old
black-and-white
photo that had
been written on,
and I wanted the
overall theme to
feel very elegant. I
used a cursive font
and a beautiful
quote from F. Scott
Fitzgeral, and I was
well pleased with
the result.
For the revision, one of my peers suggested letting the text run over the top of the picture, to make the “writing” look
more authentic. I did this, and I also changed the font because I found one that looked more handwritten.
Week 5: Page Layout
I did not think I
would enjoy this
assignment,
but
I was surprised
with how much I
did! I designed a
magazine
article
about the London
Tr a n s p o r t a t i o n
Logo,
using
London’s skyline as
a border and the
actual logo as a
letter in the title.
For the revision, I replaced the pull-quote with a segment of the map of London, as advised by a peer. However, I like
the original version better.
Week 6: Posters
I
enjoyed
this
assignment.
I
made a poster for
Jazz in June, using
graphic elements. I
drew each letter in
Adobe Illustrator
to create a “musical”
font, and I also
drew the jazz player,
staff, and musical
notes in Adobe
Illustrator.
I like
the poster because
it is eye-catching
and simple, and
there’s not a lot of
text to bog a person
down or make them
uninterested.
For the second poster, my peers suggested adding more information about the event. I did so, but I think the original
looks better and is more attractive to the intended audience.
