Each year, the Nightingale Award for Excellence in Nursing,
Connecticut’s largest statewide nursing recognition program, is
presented to nurses recognized for providing outstanding quality
of patient care, superior nursing clinical skills and extraordinary
compassion. Recipients are nominated by their peers and selected
by a panel of nursing professionals. In 2010, twelve Stamford
Hospital nurses were honored.

The Regional Center for Health Evolves
Stamford Hospital is committed to providing each patient with the highest
possible level of medical care by capitalizing on advances in medical technology
and attracting and retaining the best healthcare professionals. The next major
step in the Hospital’s evolution calls for a phased-in replacement of our older
facilities at the main campus with structures that incorporate breakthroughs
in healthcare facility design as well as promote our Planetree philosophy
of patient-centered care.
Over the next two years, we are undertaking
the initial infrastructure work of the site plan,
including construction of a new Central Utility
Plant for energy generation and conservation.
Upon completion, we will be positioned to
prepare for the launch of Phase I, which features
a state-of-the-art, three-story facility to house a
expanded Intensive Care Unit and consolidation
of the Hospital’s growing heart and vascular
services. Once construction begins, it is projected
that Phase I will take approximately three years
to complete.
Phase II of the Master Facility Plan features
the construction of seven additional stories to
the vertically-stacked three-story facility. It will
house 305 private rooms to meet the Hospital’s
medical/surgical needs. In addition, the patient
tower roof will be designed to accommodate a
helicopter landing pad.
The Master Facility Plan also calls for the
development of a larger medical office building
on campus, and we have entered into a land
lease with an outside developer for this purpose.

HATTI SCULPTURE
Stamford Hospital Foundation received in 2010 an anonymous donation of a
sculpture for the Hospital. Created by noted New York artist Gwen Marcus,
Hatti is a life-size bronze sculpture that is located at the front entrance of
the Tully Health Center. Gwen Marcus has exhibited in numerous shows
throughout the United States and is part of many important collections
throughout the world, including Taiwan, England and Switzerland. The Hatti
installation enables us to enhance the patient experience by incorporating
art and nature in line with the Hospital’s Planetree commitment to deliver
patient-centered healthcare.

PADDLES WITH A PURPOSE
Hope in Motion is more than the Walk, Run, and Ride you’ve come to know.
Throughout the year, grassroots efforts and special fundraising events are
taking place to raise both awareness and funds for the Bennett Cancer
Center patients and their families. Paddles with a Purpose is one such
grassroots event aimed at raising donations and building community
awareness. The Third Annual Paddle Tennis Invitational was held on April 2,
2011 at the New Canaan Country Club. The Community Events page is

The Care to Share Employee Participation Campaign provides employees

Now in our sixteenth year, Hope in Motion is one of Fairfield County’s
largest and longest running participatory charitable events. Hope in Motion
has become a beacon of light for the Bennett Cancer Center, as it gives
cause for celebration. We celebrate the courage of people fighting for their
lives, the love and support of their families and friends, and the memories
of those we have lost. Both the funds and the feelings of hope and optimism
generated by this event help carry our patients and their families through
the days, months, and years ahead.

More than 900 people attended Stamford Hospital’s sixth annual Dream
Ball on Saturday, November 6, 2010. Grammy-Award winner and music
legend Paul Simon treated attendees to a two-man acoustical session of
songs from his musical past and present. The event featured a Giving Tree
and a silent auction. Attendees had the opportunity to bid in a live auction
for two Martin guitars autographed by Paul Simon. The two winning bids of
$13,500 each were placed by the Master of Ceremonies Bobby Valentine of
Stamford and by Clo and Charles Cohen of New York City. Proceeds from
the gala fundraiser support Stamford Hospital’s mission to provide quality
healthcare to the region. The event took place at Stamford Hospital’s Tully

Since 1994, the Corporate Invitational has supported a variety of cancer
initiatives, including a pioneering bone marrow transplant program, the
genetic risk and prevention programs, and other cancer services offered at
the Bennett Cancer Center. The event is designed to minimize ceremony,
and to maximize fundraising and enjoyment of the game of golf on one of
our region’s finest golf courses. Proceeds from last year’s event helped to
fund innovative cancer research programs at the Bennett Cancer Center.

At four months old, Harrison Stoogenke, accompanied by his
mother Susie, returned to the NICU to celebrate the donation of
the second Giraffe Warmer
Harrison Stoogenke was born eight weeks prematurely at Stamford Hospital
on March 17, 2010. It became immediately evident that little Harrison was
fighting for his life as he was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in
grave condition. He was born with a hole in his heart, had lost 90% of his
blood, and his lungs had collapsed requiring a ventilator for him to breathe.
THE 2010 PHYSICIAN PARTICIPATION CAMPAIGN
With a coordinated team effort of neonatologists and nurses, Harrison was
stabilized through blood transfusions, medications and respiratory support.
His health gradually improved with the use of a high-tech incubator, called
the Giraffe Warmer, which created a warm and comfortable atmosphere for
Harrison to get well. The Giraffe Warmer, one of two purchased through the
generosity of an anonymous donor, was instrumental in keeping Harrison
alive and providing him a state-of-the-art incubator in which this boy was
able to gain the strength to survive.
The Stamford Hospital Foundation’s 2010 Physician Participation Campaign
was a success, with fifty percent of the physician community contributing.
The Campaign was chaired by Drs. Gary Besser, Edward Schuster and
Richard Sheinbaum. Honorary Chairs for the Campaign were Drs. Cleo
Siderides and Noel Robin. As always, the primary campaign goal is to
maximize participation. All gifts exemplify the support of the physician
community for the Hospital’s goals and initiatives, while signaling genuine
concern about the future of healthcare delivery across the community.

toy closet. This event is held the first Monday after Thanksgiving at a local
Country Club. The 16th Annual Culinary Showcase, held on November 29,
2010, attracted almost 600 people, who spent an evening sampling a fivestar buffet and bidding on silent auction items.
David’s Treasure Tree is a toy closet named in memory of 15-year-old David
Kanarek, a Greenwich resident who lost his battle with acute lymphomatic
leukemia in 2000. David’s parents Robin and Joseph Kanarek founded the
cause as a unique way to honor their son’s memory. Children in Stamford
Hospital’s Pediatric Unit can select from the toy closet a toy or gift to keep.
The connection with David’s Treasure Tree is personal for Club Chefs’ Vice
President Jeff Perez, Executive Chef of Fairview Country Club in Greenwich.
Perez first met David and his family more than ten years ago. David was a
camp counselor at Millbrook Country Club in Greenwich, where, at the time,
Perez was Executive Chef.
Guests may sample dishes prepared by all the country clubs
participating and further help raise money by bidding on silent
auction items donated by the chefs and supporters

TONY MUSILLI MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT
Tony Musilli, born and raised in Stamford, had a love for family, friends and
all things golf. In 2002, Tony succumbed to a fatal heart attack at the age
of 39. Those closest to him decided to honor his memory with a day of golf,
fellowship and fun. A small outing soon grew to an annual tournament that
now includes a fundraising event at the Italian Center of Stamford to benefit
local charities in memory of Tony. At the suggestion of Dr. Ed Schuster, the
organizers of the event elected to donate the proceeds of the annual Tony
Musilli Memorial Golf Tournament to the new Heart and Vascular Institute at
Stamford Hospital. Over the past two years, $35,000 has been generously
given to support the further development of the Heart and Vascular Institute.

THE VINCE AND LINDA MCMAHON FAMILY FOUNDATION, INC.
Recognizing the issue of childhood obesity as a national concern, The
Vince and Linda McMahon Family Foundation has been and continues to
be generous supporters of the KIDS’ FANS 5-2-1-0 program.
The KIDS’ FANS program is a behavioral modification and lifestyle program
designed to reach at-risk children from elementary through high school by
deepening community partnerships. This community-wide collaborative
program, sponsored by Stamford Hospital, endorses and promotes the
preventative health message 5-2-1-0. Each day, 5 servings of fruits and
vegetables, 2 hours or less of screen time, 1 hour or more of physical
activity, and 0 to almost no sugar-sweetened beverages.
KIDS’ FANS received the 2010 Connecticut Hospital Community Service
Award sponsored by the Connecticut Hospital Association and the
Connecticut Department of Public Health.
THE ALFRED W. WOLFSOHN, M.D. AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE
The Alfred W. Wolfsohn, M.D. Award for Excellence in Clinical Medicine was
established in 2010 with the support of Douglas and Dr. Sharon (Wolfsohn)
Karp and the Wolfsohn family to honor Dr. Alfred Wolfsohn. Dr. Wolfsohn is
a retired physician, who practiced and taught at Stamford Hospital for fortyfive years. The award honors his esteemed role as a teacher and mentor to
his students and residents. The Wolfsohn Award will be presented annually
at the June graduation ceremony of the House Staff to a resident whose
clinical skills, thoughtful analysis, and deep compassion exemplify the noble
ideals of the art of medicine.
In celebration of Dr. Wolfsohn’s upcoming 80th birthday, the formal
announcement of the Wolfsohn Award took place on Nov. 5, 2009

DR. LAUREN BALSANELLO PUERARO—8/23/60–7/21/10
Board certified in both Anesthesiology and Internal Medicine, Dr. Pueraro
worked as an anesthesiologist at Stamford Hospital for over 20 years.
From the moment of her devastating diagnosis, she was surrounded by
an unprecedented number of friends, colleagues and loved ones. The
positive effect that she had on everyone she came in contact with will be
remembered always. Dr. Jay Freilich organized a memorial tribute to his
colleague and together with fellow anesthesiologists donated a plaque in
Dr. Pueraro’s memory to celebrate her life of caring and dedication.
CRAIG D. TIFFORD
Dr. Craig D. Tifford is a Stamford Hospital-affiliated orthopedic surgeon,
who survived choriocarcinoma, a highly malignant and very aggressive
form of testicular cancer. Subsequently, he founded the Craig D. Tifford
Foundation, which has raised over $1 million through their annual
fundraising galas to help fund research initiatives, raise awareness and
provide living grants to patients and their families.
Dr. Tifford was initially treated at Stamford Hospital’s Bennett Cancer
Center. As an expression of gratitude for the support he received from his
family and friends, the Craig D. Tifford Foundation donated $10,000 to the
Bennett Cancer Center for testicular cancer research. In all, the Foundation
has given $35,000 in support of this important initiative.

HACKERS FOR HOPE
The Bennett Cancer Center has been a beneficiary of the Hackers For Hope
annual golf event that dates back to 1993. Each year, 12–20 golfers (or
Hackers) play as many holes of golf as they can in a single day. In 2010,
the Hackers for Hope donation to the Center brought their total giving
to over $1,000,000. Over the past seventeen years, Hackers for Hope has
enabled the Cancer Center to purchase a vehicle for the local chapter of
the American Red Cross to bring patients who didn’t have a means of
transportation to their treatments; underwrite this transportation program;
and support the clinical trials program at the Bennett Cancer Center. The
funding for clinical trials allows the Bennett Cancer Center to participate in
more trials than any other community hospital in Connecticut. Patients who
participate in trials have access to experimental treatments in addition to
standard therapies giving them more tools to help fight their disease.

THE MOBILE WELLNESS PROGRAM
The American College of Radiology accredited Mobile Wellness Program
handled an unprecedented volume screening more than 2,500 women in
2010. Over 900 women received a no cost mammogram thanks to funding
from the Breast Cancer Alliance of Greenwich, the Connecticut affiliate of
Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Connecticut’s Early Detection Program and a
generous anonymous donation. With significant outreach into the community,
the program was offered this past year by over 50 corporations to their
employees, over 25 school districts and town government offices to their
employees, over 25 community clinics to their patients and over 10 churches
to their members during on site screenings. The mobile wellness center
is staffed by an Outreach Educator and a new Patient Navigator funded
specifically by Susan G. Komen for the Cure. This new position has greatly
enhanced the program’s effectiveness and quality of care to our patients.

Community Benefit and Charity Care
The Hospital is committed to providing health care services to the community. The
Hospital identifies community needs in a number of ways, including through data
provided by either government or nonprofit organizations, as well as through involvement in a number of organizations such as Stamford Partnership, United Way, and
West Side Neighborhood Revitalization Zone. All of these efforts rely on a strong
relationship management philosophy that grows and evolves over time. In Darien, for
example, the Hospital helped the town assess its public health needs by sponsoring
a Community Needs Assessment; when the town determined it needed a full-time
health director, the Hospital helped support the position. In Stamford, the Hospital
has worked closely with the health director on several initiatives including Stamford
Walks and Hands Only CPR, an outgrowth of the successful establishment of the
city as a state-designated HeartSafe Community.
The Hospital provides a variety of programs that benefit the community—both
prevention and wellness, as well as disease-specific. Kid’s Fitness and Nutrition
Services (KidsFANS) is a Stamford Hospital led community collaborative designed
to promote smart eating, physical activity and healthy weight among our children.
In partnership with the Stamford Youth Foundation, the Hospital works with local
schools and community centers to provide ongoing children’s fitness and nutrition
programs. The Mobile Wellness Program offers mammography and bone density
screenings on a state-of-the-art coach to corporations, community organizations,
churches, schools and the underserved. Over the past year, the Hospital has provided thousands of free health screenings (blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose,
cardiac risk assessment) at hundreds of health fairs and events throughout the community. Physicians and other health professionals also offer services at community
health fairs and speak to various community groups and organizations on health
related topics, ranging from stress and pain management to heart disease and
joint replacement.
The Hospital maintains records to identify and monitor the level of charity care it provides. Charges foregone for these services, based on its established rates pursuant
to the requirements of the State of Connecticut, were approximately $23,000,000
and $12,000,000 for the years ended September 30, 2010 and 2009, respectively.
The State of Connecticut distributes funds from its Uncompensated Care Pool, based
on a formula that includes both the provision for bad debts, net of recoveries, and free
care, also described as charity care. The following table sets forth the total of bad
debt expense and charity care for the years ended September 30, 2010 and 2009:
