Ispendalotofmytimewiththenewmembersofourcommunity,organizingandteachingthe"WelcometoUUCA"classes.Iloveteaching
theseclasses,becauseitisusuallythe4irsttimethatpeoplelearnwhatit
trulymeanstobeaUnitarianUniversalist.Theylearnthehistory,consider
ourprinciplesandsourcesofinspiration,anddiscoverhowtogetconnectedhereatUUCA.IhearalotofthingswhenIteachtheseclasses...
Usuallythingslike:"Ican'tbelievethisplaceexists!Iamsogratefulto
havefoundthischurch".Whatdidyouthinkwhenyoufoundthischurch?
Or,ifyougrewupUU,whydidyoustay?
Thatstarry-eyed,idealisticviewofthechurchissofun!Iloveworking
withpeoplewhoareoptimistic,hopeful,andexcitedabouttheirplacein
thechurch,andtheroleofthechurchinthewiderworld.Itisgoodtobe
idealistic!
Thedown-sideofidealismisthatitcanbefragile.Peoplebuildupthe
visionofUnitarianUniversalism,thisfaiththeyhaveclaimedastheirown,
astheBelovedCommunityitself.Buthere'sthetruthofthematter:a
churchisagroupofpeople.Peopleare4lawed.Peoplemakemistakes.And
thus,thechurchdoes,too.
ThevisionofourcommunityisthatwearestrivingtoBUILDtheBelovedCommunity.We'renotthereyet.Andwiththediversityofopinion,
viewpoint,andpersonalitythatourcongregationattracts,wearesureto
havedisagreements,orhurtfeelingsoccasionally.Buttheidealismofour
communitycanhelpusrememberourhigherideals.Whenwedisagree,
getfrustrated,feelleft-out,orhavehurtfeelings,wecanstrivetoremain
incommunityratherthanrunningaway.Wecanreachouttosomeonewe
trustforhelpandsupport.Wecanpracticebeinghuman.
ItwastheUUtheologianJamesLutherAdamswhooncesaidsomething
like,"Churchiswherewepracticebeinghuman".Beinghumanmeanswe
makemistakes.Beinghumanmeanswecansometimesbesel4ish.Being
humanmeanswearenotperfect.But,beinghumancanalsomeanwerecognizeourerrors,wecanworktomakeamends,andwecanbeginagain
inlove.AndonlythroughpracticecanwestrivetowardbuildingtheBelovedCommunity.
Imeetwithpeople,often,whohavefeltdisappointedbythechurch.
Maybetheirneedsaren'tbeingmet.Maybesomeonewasrudetothemin
coffeehour.Maybetheyarefeelingworriedaboutthedirectionofthe
church.Maybetheycan't4indtheirplaceinthisbusycommunity.Ilove
thischurch,andIwishthatnobodyeverfeltdisappointed.But,Iknowthat
wearealljustagroupofpeople,tryingourbest,andstrivingtomake
thingsright...

mind,bodyandspirit;andlisteningtooneanother.
Inordertoservethecongregationandthegreatercommunity,wealsostrivetocreate
anenvironmentthatchallenges,
inspires,encouragesandsupportsthequestforreligiousful4illment.

OnSaturday,March2,UUCAservedasthehostsiteforadaylong
conferencesponsoredbyCASAdeMaryland.TheUUCALatinoConnectiongroup,coordinatedbyUUCAmemberAnitaRamundo,put
togetherawonderfullunchforthe40+men,womenandchildren
whoattended,primarilyimmigrantsfromLatinandSouthAmerica
seekingtoestablishapathwaytoobtainpermanentresidencyand
citizenship.ReverendJohnCrestwell,withassistancefromatranslator,welcomedtheparticipantsatthebeginningoftheprogram.
Abigthankyougoestothefollowingfolkswhocontributedtheir
timeandservice,aswellasfundingforthecostofrefreshments.
Theyhelpedtomakethedayasuccessbyextendingawarmwelcomeandameal.So,thanksto:MaryEllenMcMillin,KarenKendell,

SECOND SUNDAY OUTREACH COLLECTION
TheMarchSecondSundayOutreachCollection,tobene4itUUCA’s
PartnerChurchMinistryinTransylvania,totaled$1,012.19.The
ministry’smissionistopromoteandsustainarelationshipbetween
theircongregationandoursthroughlong-distancecommunication,
visitstoandfromTransylvania,andjointprojects&programs.We
havebeenabletohelpwithfundsforrenovationsinRava,aswell
assendatalentedstudenttowoodworkingschool.The4th&5th
gradeREstudentshavebegunemailcorrespondencewithstudents
inAlmas.Thusbeginsanewgenerationofpeopleinterestedin
PartnerChurchministry!

FaithDevelopmentMinister
Each month we highlight one of our children and youth
programs, as well as one of our adult programs. Faith
Development at UUCA is for all ages, so we should
explore all parts of it here on our Faith Development
page!
ReligiousExplorationforChildrenandYouth
Highlight:COMINGOFAGE(COA)
Eighthgraders(~ages13-14)engageinayear-longprocessof
learningaboutthemselves,understandingtheirownbeliefsandethics,andconnectingtotheirUnitarianUniversalistidentityaspartof
theUUAandthiscongregation.Theyarepairedwithanadultmentortogettoknow,andthatpersonhelpsthemwritetheirend-ofyear"credo"orstatementofbelief.Unlikesomefaithtraditions
whichrequireyouthtomemorizeafaithstatement,thisUUprogramrequiresyouthtodecideforthemselveswhatisofimportance
intheirlives,andwhattheybelievetobetrueandright.TheComing
ofAgeyouthhavedoneafewfundraisersthisyear,includingbaking
piesatMissNancy'sFancyBakery(thankyou,Ms.KarenKoch!)and
theyjust4inishedahighlysuccessfulfooddriveinwhichtheycollectedover800poundsoffoodtodonatetotheLightHouseShelter.
AttheendofMarchtheywillhaveembarkedontheir"BostonPilgrimage".Specialthankstoourfacilitators,whoareawonderful,
committedgroupofadults:SteveHaiman,TriciaHopkins,Jim
Horstman,andDaveUllrich...THANKYOU!

Highlight:SUNDAYSERVICES
Whenwethinkabout"FaithDevelopment",wetypicallythinkof
thingslikeclasses,groups,orinspirationalpractices.Weneedalso
includethatcentralactofafaithcommunity:SundayServices.Withoutworship(whichmeans,literally,honoringthatwhichisofgreat
worth),wecouldbeanycommunityserviceorganization,political
actiongroup,orcontinuingeducationvenue.Sundaymorningis
whenweallcometogetherasasinglebody,tohonoreachothers'
joysandsorrows,singtogether,prayormeditatetogether,andlistentoinspiringwordstogether.Itisthetimewehaveacommon
experience.IthinkofSundayServiceasthe"hub"inthewheel…All
ofthespokesofsocialjustice,communityservice,fellowshipactivities,andclassesforchildren,youth,andadultsradiateoutfromthat
centralcommunalact.Ifyou'renotparticipatingonSundaymorning,atleastacoupletimesamonthifnotmore,you'rereallymissingoutonwhatitmeanstobepartofUUCA.

HouseShelteronSaturdayevening,March9,toprepareandservedinnertotheshelterresidents.Ninechefsdonnedtheirapronsandsharpenedtheirknivestopreparecarrots,greenbeans,potatoes,4ish,rice
casserole,rolls,andalusciousbananadessert.Wetookturnsserving
theresidentsandsittingdowntoeatwiththem.Theirstoriescanbe
heartbreaking,sowewereallfeelingblessedthatwehadahomeand
couldprovideandshareamealwiththoseattheshelter.Threeyoung
childrenwerenotenamoredof4ish,butsandwicheswerefound,anda
momprovidedthemealfora7-day-oldinfant.Theotherscameback
forsecondsandthirds,enjoyingthe4ishandveggiesthatwerefresh.

OnSaturday,February23,twentypeoplearrivedatUUCAinsilence,adheringstrictlytotheinstructionse-mailedthembeforehandsonoonehadto
speakonscene.Theyhungtheircoats,putawaytheirlunches,deposited
somethinginthesilentlypassivedana(generosity)basket,anddroppedtheir
aspirationsandagitationswhentheybowedinatthedoorofthezendo
(sanctuary.)TheZazenkaiwasgovernednotbyoraldirectives,norevenby
SenseiRoseMaryDougherty(alsoSchoolSisterofNotreDame,whopracticed
intheSotoZenrowsalongwiththerestofus,butbyamutualcommitmentto
self-disciplined,harmoniouscommunity.Crucialtothatself-governancewas
thejikido,thetime-keeperarmedwithabellandaZenclock,adheringtoacenturies-oldpatternobservedaroundtheworldbywhichdiverseethnicgroups
andculturessharecommonrootsandaninternationallyfamiliarpractice.A

UUA,at24FarnsworthStreet
inBoston'sInnovationDistrict.
ThecurrentBeaconHillpropertieswillbesold.Afterastrategicanalysisofourcurrent
infrastructure,webecamevery
awareofthelimitationsofour
headquarters.Withthisinformationandaftermuchdeliberation,weconcludedthatinordertofurtherourmovement
andworkinaplacethatre4lectedourvalues,weneededa
newheadquarters.Inthe
weeksandmonthstocome,the
UUAwillbesharinginformationaboutthenewheadquartersasitdevelops,andwe
wantyoutoparticipate.There
willbemanyopportunitiesfor
engagement,conversation,and
contributionstothisvitaltransition.Tostart,watchthisvideohighlightingUUAstaff’s
uniqueinsightintothisimportantandhistoricopportunity.Youcanalsoviewthevideo

UUCA’s2ndAnnualFamilyCabaretNightisalmosthere!Saturday,
April13isthedate.Comeat5:00PMforadeliciouslasagnadinner;
socializewithfamiliarfriends,andmaybemeetnewones;look
aroundattheamazingarts&craftsattheartisan’stables.Dinner
ticketswillbeavailableatthedoor;$10/adultsand$5/children.
Theperformancesbeginat7:00PM.Wehaveafulleveningofentertainmentplanned.Theperformershavebeenbusypracticingand
preparing.Thechoirswillopentheshowsingingtogether,accompaniedbyorchestralinstruments.Thechildrenwillwowuswitha
specialsignlanguagesong,andtheDrumCirclewillvibratethe
wallsofthesanctuarywiththeirrhythms.Therewillbepoetryand
musicbyBobErtman&MaxOchs,andjazzbyAlAdams,GingerAdams,&StanHaavik.CindyHackettwillshareherstorytellingtalents,andtheElderlyBrothersarebackbypopulardemand.The
ministershavebeenpracticingtheirnumbersincelastyear'sshow
ended!
ThisistrulyabigcommunitynightatUUCA.DianneMoreauhas
beenorganizingthedinner;CarlySargenthasbeenrecruitingthe
artisans;AshleyFuchsandIhavebeenauditioningtheperformances.Wheredoyourtalentslie?Hopefullyyouwill4indawaytobea
partofthisfun,community-buildingevent.Itisgreattoseesomany
peoplewillingtoworktogether.Lastyearwasfantastic,andwe
wereabletomakeagooddealofmoneyaswell.ThisyearIamlookingforwardtoamagicalevening.
