Winter 2014 - Mercy Health Clinic
Winter 2014
Mercy Health Clinic is a free, not-forprofit, non-sectarian, community
based primary health care provider
serving uninsured, low-income
adult residents of Montgomery
County, Maryland. The Clinic, with
more than 150 dedicated volunteers,
is committed to continually seeking
ways to improve and expand the
quality of medical care, health education and medicines it provides free
of charge to eligible patients.

Mercy Health Clinic relies on support
from individuals, corporations,
foundations, civic organizations and
religious groups who generously
donate their time, talent and
resources to the Clinic and the
patients it serves.
WINNERS! Eric Schuch, Jason Apolenis, Curtis O’Keefe, Bryan Taylor
Carl Nordberg Pharmacy program. Held
at Manor Country Club again this year,
with presenting sponsor Roberts Home
Medical and Roberts Oxygen, the course
provided the perfect setting for our
golfers, sponsors and volunteers. Blue
skies and crisp cool weather added to
the great day! The day was filled with
lots of golf fun with a putting contest,
$1 million shootout, hole-in-one contest
cars provided by Page Honda and Sheehy
AutoStores – in addition, the day included box lunches, cocktail reception and
buffet dinner. Prizes were given for closest to the pin, longest drive and the 3 top
low gross foursomes.
New Collaborations Benefit MHC Patients
Through our recent collaborations, Mercy Health Clinic is able to provide patients with access to the wonderful services
and benefits of two great non-profit organizations in our neighborhood.
Montgomery Hospice is a nonprofit serving residents of
Montgomery County. Their team of doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, spiritual counselors, social workers, certified nursing assistants, bereavement counselors and volunteers works with patients and their families to provide
quality end-of-life care in homes, extended care facilities
and at Casey House, their acute care facility. They also
provide support to the family for a year after the death of
their loved one.
Through our collaboration with Montgomery Hospice, we
refer patients with terminal diagnoses to receive end of
life care.
Pain Connection is a non-profit organization dedicated
to empower people with chronic pain to improve their
quality of life, their sense of isolation and take a more
active role in their treatment.
Through our collaboration with the Pain Connection, we
refer our patients who suffer from chronic pain to receive
care and support.
They do this by providing support groups, specialized
classes, a speaker series on treatment modalities,
training and supervision of mental health professionals
on chronic pain, a newsletter on chronic pain issues,
information and referrals, and community outreach
and education.

Partnering with University of MD Schools
multi-disciplinary pilot project began this September at the Clinic, in collaboration with the University of
Maryland and the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services. Inter-professional teams
A
of students from several colleges within
the University (graduate school of social
work, nursing, pharmacy, and undergraduate social work) are providing holistic care
and well-being for complex medical
patients of the Clinic. Students engage in
topical discussions and see patients under
the preceptorship of faculty and staff at
the Clinic. Students work as a team and
maximize roles of various team members
to benefit our patients. The goals are to
enhance patient care and to expose students to inter-professional collaborative

New Partnership with
Columbia Lighthouse
for the Blind
hrough a new partnership with the Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind, optometrists will provide diabetic
retinopathy screening to our diabetic patients. The goal is to provide all diabetic patients with a free
screening annually since they are at higher risk of blindness. Screenings will take place at the Clinic, using
our on-site ophthalmology equipment. MHC is fortunate to have two volunteer ophthalmologists serving
patients at the Clinic: Dr. Raymond Pilkerton and Dr. Murray Hammerman. This new partnership will supplement their work and enable more diabetic patients to receive the screenings they need.
T
Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind provides a comprehensive, integrated range of services including low
vision care and rehabilitation, job development training, and employment for people of all ages who are
visually impaired or blind, to enable them to remain independent.
Meet James F. Duffy,
M.D., S.J.
near constant presence at Mercy Health
Clinic, Fr. Dr. Duffy, is a
board certified internist
and a Jesuit Priest-and
volunteer extraordinare!
Fr. Duffy is an assistant
professor and associate
dean at the Georgetown
University School of
Medicine. Throughout his Jesuit formation, he
acquired an M.A. in Health Care Ethics from Loyola
University in Chicago, and an M. Div. from the
Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, CA, while
practicing in inner city under-served health care
settings.
A
Fr. Dr. Duffy will be leaving us in January 2015 for
an 8 month program in Santiago, Chili, to complete his Jesuit Formation. But we will welcome
him back in September of 2015.
Thanks to generous grant support from the Order
of Malta Association USA, we are able to hire a
provider to fill in for Fr. Dr. Duffy during his temporary absence. Thank you, Order of Malta!
Although we will miss him greatly, he has promised to come back! We wish Fr. Dr. Duffy a safe
journey and we look forward to his return.
Patient Story Corner
eet Zenaida. When she first visited us over 3
years ago, she was in need of serious medical
care. Mercy Health Clinic provided her with a
mammogram, colonoscopy,
and a full physical, in addition
to cardiac care and two knee
replacement surgeries.
Zenaida says with a smile,
“I thank God first and then all
the staff and volunteers of
Mercy Health Clinic because I
feel great, and I am back to
work!”
