FAIRNESS
Is one of our six core values. It is integrated into all aspects of our school
life and is practiced in the classrooms and playground .
This term our focus will be on ‘Fairness’ and what it means.
‘Fairness’ means treating people equally without showing any
favouritism and accepting that everyone is different. It means
- Always playing fairly
- Never criticising or making fun of others because they are
different
- Including everyone equally.
It is important that we work together to ensure that the children in our
school have a clear understanding of our core values and what they
mean.
Please reinforce the meaning of this value with your child.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
I have been on leave for two weeks and am just beginning to catch up on the many activities and
achievements that have occurred over the last three weeks. This is a lengthy Newsletter and reflects the many
activities that have occurred. I would like to thank Mrs Moss and Mrs Takacs who relieved as Principal and
Deputy Principal in my absence.
Congratulations to our Year 1 students who went on their Zoo excursion on Monday. Congratulations also to
our Year 2 swimmers who are now in the second week of their instruction. All the staff have commented on the
exemplary behaviour of both grades.
As a school community we are very grateful to the many staff who recently gave up their own time to attend
the overnight excursions to Deer Park (Year 3 – Miss Warren, Mr Sheen, Mrs Georgouras, Mrs Bosden),
Bathurst (Year 5 - Mrs Millar, Mr Fisher, Mr Hallworth, Ms Taniane) and Canberra (Year 6 Mr Tindall, Mrs
Cooper, Mrs Takacs, Mr Hallworth, Mr Shewan). I have enjoyed speaking to the children about their
experiences away from home and many talk about the opportunities they had to make new friends. I invite you
to read the reports written by students about their excursions. They are an interesting read.
Thank you to the community and the P&C in particular for the fun Fathers Day Morning Tea and other
festivities that occurred on the day. The children had a great time.
Our Tournament of Minds teams excelled recently and I thank Ms Taniane, Mrs Millar and Mr Fisher for the
time given to supervising the students and attending when they competed against other school on a Sunday,
Congratulations to all of our teams for their ingenious work and especially to our two teams who were awarded
Honours. Congratulations to our dance groups who performed at the Kurranulla Dance Festival recently and to
staff who gave up their time in the evening to assist. A number of parents commented on the ‘positive
community feel’ that existed in the room while the children waited for their turn to perform. All our dancers
were exceptional but a special mention must go to the Year 2 Boys who were placed ‘First Overall’ and ‘Most
Entertaining’. The girls who performed 'Heads will Roll' were also place ‘First Overall’. The Primary Girls were
placed 3rd overall. These are exceptional results all round and we are proud of all of our dancers.

TERM 3 – WEEK 10
The children from 4S recently completed their Film By the Sea submission and were awarded a Highly
Commened for their work. Congratulations to our public speaking representatives, Holly H and Shelly M, who
will go on to compete at the Regional Finals next term. Congratulations to Jayde J on her selection into the
NSW PSSA Softball team and to the following students who will be representing the Sydney East Region –
Tiahna W and April D (Athletics), Jake B (Softball) and Trent (Rugby Union).
Congratulations to Alyza D for achieving 10th in Australia and 27th in the World
Athletics Hall of Fame. Congratulations to Isabella S who competed in a
PSSA Horse riding competition on her horse Chilli, and together were placed
first in jumping and hacking. This is a wonderful achievement.
Best Wishes Mr Turner and Mr Shewan
On behalf of the staff and students I would like to thank Mr Shewan and Mr
Turner for their dedication and commitment they have shown to the students
in their classes (6T and 4K) but also across the school. They have been
completing their teaching practicum all throughout Term 3 and have brought
their own skills and expertise to our school. They have each become involved
in a range of school activities beyond their classrooms and we wish them well
in their profession. Friday will be their final day teaching at BBPS.
Thank you to Margaret Seaberg, Tracy Peters, Mrs Takacs and Mrs Moss
who met with Mr Mark Speakman MP, recently to present our schools
application for a Community Building Partnership Project. Mr Speakman was
welcomed to our school by Jayde and Jai, our school captains and was very
impressed with our submission. He also liked the Show Bag we gave hime. No doubt Jayde and Jai will have
left him with a lasting impression. If we are successful, the State Government will fund the restoration and
resurfacing of the Netball/Basketball asphalt court and cricket pitches with 19mm Tournament Multisport
Grass. This will free up a large amount of P&C funds for other purposes. The P&C minutes of the last meeting
will explain this further. The project will include volleyball sleeves, posts, net and caps and also will include the
supply & installation of in ground sleeves and removable netball posts and caps. Our application will be
competing with those from other schools in the electorate however at the last P&C meeting the meeting voted
that if the grant is unsuccessful the P&C is proposing to allocate P&C funds to pay for completion of
multipurpose court during the Xmas holidays.

TERM 3 – WEEK 10
This week a new shipping container will be placed at the far end of the asphalt playground behind the
3S classroom. Thank you to Mr and Mrs Powell for assisting the school with the purchase and

SCHOOL ADMINISTRATIVE AND SUPPORT STAFF (SASS) RECOGNITION WEEK
Recently our school community acknowledged the great work our SASS staff do. Our school has many
dedicated and highly competent staff. Teachers would be unable to deliver quality programs without the
incredible contribution of our SASS (School Administrative and Support Staff). During SASS Recognition
Week we thanked our office staff - General Assistants – Jim , Ross and Kevin; Office Staff – Jennifer Best,

PUBLIC SPEAKING
This year our School Public Speaking Competition saw a fantastic group of speakers represent their grades.
Our adjudicator, Mr Julian Sheen was impressed by the quality of all the students who participated. Our
winners for each stage were
Stage 1 - Flynn Williams
Stage 2 - Shelley Morton
Stage 3 - Holly Herden
These students spoke at Zone Public Speaking competition at Cronulla Public School. They were excellent
school ambassadors and should be very proud of their efforts.
Shelley Morton and Holly Herden both achieved second place in their stages. They will now represent the
school at Regional Level which will be held at San Souci Public School in Term 4 Week 2 - Monday 13th
October.
TRAFFIC SAFETY
A School Traffic Safety Committee has been formed to liaise with Sutherland Shire
Council, and other agencies if need be, to try and bring about some improvements to
the inadequate amount of drop off and pick up spaces for parents/carers during the
busiest times at the beginning and end of the day on both Gannons and Burraneer Bay
Road. The Council has considered the requests made by the Principal and the BBPS
Traffic Safety Committee will report back in the next newsletter.
YEAR BOOK
Teachers and students have been busy finishing their class double pages for the Year
Book. Many students have also submitted entries to the Cover Competition. The theme this year has been ‘I
Promise…’ and the standard of art work has been very good. Perhaps this has something to do with the
inspiration children have drawn from their Raw Art Lessons.

NRMA SCIENCE & ROAD SAFETY DAY – WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2014
Our school will be hosting an NRMA Science & Road Safety Day, a new road safety program that will be
delivered free of charge to our school by the National Roads & Motorists’ Association with the aim of helping
our students stay safe of the road.
This program involves students participating in road
safety shows in the hall and completing road safety
workbooks in the classroom to help the road safety
messages stick.
The shows combine important road safety message
with science. Messages such as “Wear their
seatbelt” have a greater impact when children have
a stronger understanding of the forces they
experience when travelling in a car and what could
happen to them should the car stop suddenly in a
crash. In the science show, a crash test dummy –
an egg – memorably shows children how a seatbelt
works to restraint passengers in a crash and more importantly why a seatbelt must be worn on each trip.
On Wednesday October 15, parents are invited to attend Session 1 of our NRMA Road Safety Day. The
session will begin at approximately 9.15 am and conclude at approximately 10.15 am. We have been very
fortunate to receive a date for this very worthwhile, enjoyable and informative road safety experience for our
children. Our community has experienced first-hand the impact of serious road safety incidents and this
initiative from the NRMA gives our school the opportunity to become a part of this very relevant and important
program. The day has a strong Science focus and children will participate in Science shows and classroom
activities. Children should bring their helmets to school for this day.
After the day, your child will be bringing home the NRMA road safety workbook they have completed in class
so take the opportunity to speak to them about what they have learned and what they can do to help keep their
friends and family safe. Within each workbook is a 4-page parent insert on child road and bike safety for you
as a handy reference guide at home.
The program is now in its second season and 40,000 students already enjoyed the program while learning
more about road safety. We are one of 100 schools across NSW and ACT to be chosen to host a day in
Season 2 and with your help we aim to make it a great success.
K-2 ATHLETICS CARNIVAL – THURSDAY 16TH OCTOBER
Dear Parents,
K-2 had to postpone their Athletics carnival because of bad weather. This has been rescheduled for Thursday
16th October. The children will be in the team we gave the children previously. We hope you can join us from
9.10am on this day.
Thank you for your cooperation.
K-2 Teachers.

CYBER SAFETY TALKS
Recently Year 5 and 6 students completed a survey that explored what devices were
most commonly used by students, how many students had access to them and how
they were using them. The results of the survey raised concerns about the number of
Year 5 and 6 children who have unsupervised internet access in their bedrooms and
the number of students accessing social networking sites and the type of information
the children publish. This is also a concern for the community. Recently Senior
Constable Debbie Wilson, Police Youth Liaison Officer, presented some workshops
with students from Years 4, 5 and 6 that focus on the importance of a person’s digital
footprint online, safe behaviours regarding passwords and privacy online what constitutes positive and
negative social behaviours on line. Parents are strongly urged to reinforce these messages by famiarising
themselves, and their children, with the content on line at
http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/
YEAR 3 OVERNIGHT EXCURSION – DEER PARK
On the 1st and 2nd of September, Year 3 and their teachers went to Deer Park for a two day excursion. The
weather was terrific on the Monday enabling us to enjoy the planned outdoor activities. All children took part in
bush cooking, navigation sessions and a boat ride to the mangroves at North West Arm. At night the students
enjoyed testing their general knowledge with a trivia competition. The second day was spent participating in
initiative games and role play with activities targeting friendship and team building. All children were rostered
on for kitchen and serving duties, giving them a sense of responsibility.
The camp was a success and a great time was had by all.
YEAR 5 BATHURST CAMP
On the 18th - 20th of August, Year 5 went on a camp to Bathurst. We
left school at 7:00am and got onto our 2 buses then headed towards
Katoomba. Unfortunately it was too wet so
we went to Katoomba Public School for
shelter and ate recess. We once again got
onto the bus and arrived at Jenolan Caves
a few hours later. Before we entered the
caves we ate lunch outside. Both groups
had a tour guide to show them around the
astonishing caves. We saw and learnt
about how the beautiful crystals were
formed and how they came to life. Once
the tour finished we drove to the Bathurst Camp site. Everyone was divided into
their cabin rooms and dressed for dinner. For dinner we had Chicken schnitzel,
once we ate everyone watched a movie called ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’.
Everyone was tired and jumped into bed around 9:30pm.

TERM 3 – WEEK 10
Early the next morning everyone was woken up at 6:45am for an early breaky. There was a variety of hot
foods and cereals, it was delicious and filling. We were told stories and learnt about life on the goldfields.
Everyone participated in activities for example: games, making damper and tent building. We were all shown
around the museum and told interesting facts. For lunch we ate a yummy sausage sizzle outside under a
sheltered area. If we had money we were allowed to buy a souvenir. Each person was given 2 hours of fun
free time. Later on we dressed for dinner and headed to the dining room. We had another divine meal. We
danced, sang and enjoyed colonial music.
With our bags packed and on the bus by 7:00am we had breaky. We hopped onto the buses and travelled to
the Cattle Drome. The barn animals were so clever! They put on their own show. Some children were picked
to milk a cow and a new born lamb was named after Mackinlay Hannan. After the exciting show we left the
Cattle Drome and went to Scenic World in Katoomba. We had lunch and then rode on the thrilling experience
of the super-steep railway. We walked along the track and got into the cable-car. We went super high! After
that, we got onto the bus and arrived safely back to school. The whole experience was fun, fabulous and
educational.

YEAR 6 CANBERRA / SNOWY EXCURSION
Year 6 was once again lucky enough to experience an excursion to Canberra and Thredbo. Our trip was an
exciting mix of valuable learning experiences coupled with a range of fun activities.
In Canberra we toured Parliament House and the Australian War Memorial and participated in hands-on
learning experiences at the Electoral Office and Questacon.
Thredbo included a two hour skiing lesson as well as a session of free skiing on Friday Flat.
Much fun was had at our Black and White themed disco, swimming in the heated pool and spending time with
friends in the ‘cabins’.
The students were a credit to the school as well as their parents and a wonderful, never to be forgotten time
was had by all.
SYDNEY EAST REGIONAL ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Students who qualified in their events at the Zone Athletics Carnival then represented Cronulla Zone at the
Regional Athletics Carnival at Homebush. Well done to all our children for their excellent effort in their
respective events. It’s a great achievement to reach regional level.

A LETTER FROM A GRANDPARENT
‘On Friday 1st August my wife & I travelled to John Dwyer park to watch our grandson
Hudson represent his school, Burraneer Bay, playing Rugby League. Not sure who
their opposition was-their colours where royal blue & gold. With not much time left in
the game the referee, also the coach of Hudson’s team, halted play for the opposing
team to send on a replacement player. We watched as a young special needs boy
took to the field to a great ovation from his coach & teammates. As play resumed in a
move obviously arranged by both teachers the ball was passed to this young man
who proceeded to score a try & attempt the ensuing conversion kick, all applauded
by both teams. The gesture brought a tear to both our eyes & when we spoke to
Hudson later he was chuffed by what had occurred. We just wanted to commend to
you the efforts of both teachers for providing a day to remember for all involved.’
SYMBIO EXCURSION
Kindergarten had a wonderful time on our excursion on Friday, 5th September. We saw lots of animals and
learnt so much about them.

WOOLOOWARE HIGH SCHOOL DAY
Yesterday, Year 6 had the opportunity to attend an open day at Woolooware high school, it
was a great experience. There were many subjects to learn about with a different teacher
each time, which made it more interesting. At Woolooware high, they teach so children will be
interested. Visual arts was a favourite subject because there were many textures and fun
ways to create art. In History, we learnt about Ancient Egypt and their hieroglyphs and we
got to spell our own name which was hard but amusing. There were many other subjects not
just these two that we experienced which were also great. Our Year Nine Peer Support
leaders were wonderful and really helpful as they showed us where the rooms were situated and how things
worked. Woolooware has a great sports curriculum and awesome equipment and an excellent music program.
I think after this experience many people wanted to go to this high school.

CANTEEN
Due to recent increases from our suppliers the canteen has had to increase the prices of some of our
products. We have managed to keep our prices as low as possible but an increase is now necessary. The
following menu items have been increased.
Pies $4.50
All sandwiches / wraps increased by 50c
The Spring/Summer 2014/15 menu reflecting these price increases will come into effect Term 4. The
Spring/Summer Menu has been sent home as a hard copy and can be downloaded here
http://www.burraneerb-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/canteen/menu
The canteen thanks you for your understanding.
