Introduction
Philippine cinema in 2009 may be divided into regular releases and digital
features that acquired full theatrical run. Regular releases that partake of the
industry standard 35mm format numbered 36 while digital features that made
it to commercial cinemas counted a staggering total of 58 titles.
Regular releases manifested the usual genres for mainstream engagement,
namely: comedy, romance, horror, drama and fantasy adventure. Digital features
were a heterogeneous lot with a screen fare of adult and sensitive content
alongside the festival produce from the year’s Cinemalaya, Cinema One and
Cinemanila Digital Lokal tilts that have now become part and parcel of national
cinema.
e country’s cinema industry received its biggest boost with the Best
Director win at Cannes – the world’s most prestigious film festival – for
Brillante Mendoza’s Kinatay. Touted as the highest distinction ever accorded
Philippine cinema, Mendoza’s prize once more placed the Philippines in the
world map of cinema. It was a triumph to be matched in significance by the next
Filipino victory, this time in Venice – the oldest and so-called “grand dame” of
all film fests in the world, that of Pepe Diokno’s Engkwentro, which brought
home two awards. e film beat, not only the competition for the Horizons
section for which it was selected, but also, all entries in the festival by first-time
filmmakers, regardless of section.

Home-grown productions have scored at the local box office with 11 titles
mostly from Star Cinema, which is among the year’s 30 top earners at the
local box office normally dominated by Hollywood imports. Leading the pack
is the Sarah Geronimo and John Lloyd Cruz starrer, You Changed My Life.
e film is the second installment in the romance franchise that began in 2008
with A Very Special Love, which became an instant mega-hit. e franchise is
bankrolled by two industry giants – Star Cinema and the Del Rosario familyowned Viva Entertainment.

genre, running time (in hours and minutes), MTRCB classification; 3) synopsis,
and 4) production data. Abbreviations for the latter are: P = Production
