AMARYLLIS
• ~1;llls are fdne of the most spectacular and beautiful of the spring flowering
bulbs. They are universally grown throughout the United States. In the Deep South
they may be grown and flowered out of doors. In all parts of the country they are
s uccessfully grown indoors in pots for late winter and early spring flowers. Since
they are perennials the purchase of an Amaryllis bulb represents a long time investment
in beauty and pleasure.
The Ludwig strain of named Dutch hybrids will be received from Holland in
November. In addition, it has been possible to obtain a number of varieties of the
"Royal Dutch Amaryllis" produced by Willem S . Warmenhoven at Hillegom, Holland
and also a few varieties of the "Paradise Amaryllis", produced at the Royal Nurseries
by G. C. Van Meeuwen & Zonen N. V. , B:eemstede, Holland. The "Royal Dutch"
and "Paradise" Amaryllis are expected to arrive about the middle of December, 1960.
Only a limited number of bulbs of each variety will be stocked, but the supply
may be increased as needed to meet nominal demands provided your order is received
by or before September 30th. Since the Ludwig varieties will be shipped in October the
final order to this nursery must be mailed !by October 1st. Every season a number
of customers are disappointed in receiving the varieties which they wanted because
they w a ited too late to order, so please order early this season.
Amaryllis bulbs make n!pe Christmas presents to friends and relatives who are
flower lovers. Send your gift card along with shipping instructions to this nursery.
Your card will be mailed along with the bulb directly to the person for whom the gift
is intended.
Red leaf spot or red fire, caused by the fungus Stagonospo1·a curtisii, has become
wide-spread throughout the country and it seems to be present on many of the imported
bulbs. To eliminate the bulb-bourne phase of this disease it is recommended that
dormant bulbs be soaked for two hours in a solution of one part of commercial
formaldehyde to 200 parts of water. For a small number of bulbs this would be one
ounce of formaldehyde to about 1 1h gallons of water. The severity of the disease on the
fo liage may be lessened by spraying the plants with neutral copper at the rate of 1
ounce to 2 gallons of water.

Dutch hybrid Amaryllis are of a full , fiat, rounded form . Usually there are two
scapes per bulb and three to four 8" tlowe1's on each scape.

AMERICAN HYBRID STRAINS OF AMARYLLIS
The present American strains are based largely on the hybrids developed by the
late Theodore L. Mead of Florida. They are more hardy and vigorous than the Dutch
hybrids, but do not have the flat form and wide, rounded flowers. Crosses between the
American and Dutch strains usually result in increased v igor over the Dutch and an
improvement in the flowers of the American strain. The crosses of Mead hybrids with
named Dutch h y brids which have bloomed at this nursery have been good shade~ of
clear red selfs.

LOUISIANA NATIVE IRISES
These beautiful native plants may be grown in practically every section of the
United States in upland gardens, provided they are well fertilized, heavily mulched and
watered frequently during periods of prolonged drought. The rhizomes may be moved
succes:!lfully at any time during late summer and fall, but the best period Is during the
months of August, September and October. Since these plants are natives of bogs and
swamps, growing naturally in water, they may also be used effectively around the borders
of shallow streams and pools. The graceful flowers are very effective In making arrangements or they may be used in a corsage.
The group of plants which are collectively classed as "Louisiana Irises" is composed
of three principal species and their hybrids. The species are I. fulva , the red or flame
colored iris of the Lower Mississippi Valley; I. giganticaerulea, the tall rhlue of the Lower
Gulf Coast; and I. foliosa, the little blue to lavender dwarf of the bluff or terrace lands.
Iris virginica is also native to Louisiana, but it grows in other regions outside the state
a.nd does not hybridize with the other species. It is largely found growing in the poorer
pine flatlands.

VIRGINICA GROUP
All varieties of the Virginica Group are very vigorous, free of disease, and easy to
grow. They will grow on poorer soil and can withstand more cold and more drought
than the species and hybrids, which taken collectively, are called "L<Juisiana Irises."
Even this group of irises, however, will respond to good soil and water as needed.

DAYLILIES
These plants may be moved at any time of the year when the ground is not frozen,
but the most desirable season in the South is in late summer and early fall after blooming is over. Fall set plants will flower the following spring.
Daylilies will tolerate a great deal of neglect and will live and bloom on poor soil,

but for more and larger flowers and a longer blooming period it is desirable that they
have a fertile soil, good culture and water as needed during periods of drought.
Diseases are of negligible importance, but in recent years there have been instances
of foliage damage by red spiders and both the foliage and flower buds are frequently
injured by aphids (plant lice). Both of these pests may be controlled by a weekly spray
program, beginning in late winter. Malathion has proven to be effective when used in
a solution of one tablespoonful to a gallon of water. At this nursery it has been found
that one early spraying with the systemic material, "Systox" gives almost complete
control of the aphid Myzns hemerocallis, but it is toxic to humans and the careless use
by inexperienced operators is not recommended. See the article "An Important New

No. 4, October, November, December, 1959.
In the selection of a variety it is highly desirable that one see the plant growing in
his locality. When this is not possible the Popularity Poll and the honors and awards
by the American Hemerocallis Society are a good (but not infallible) guide for choosing
varieties. These are published in this catalog. Important characters to consider are
sunfast flowers which do not fade or burn, strong, e rect scapes and plants which will
rebloom if given water and good culture.

DAYLILY SEED
Hand pollinated seed from the best clones at this nursery. These seed are 'from
carefully selected crosses designed to bring about improvement in size, form, substance,
color and / or scapes. Place orders throughout the year for delivery during the months
of July, August and September. If planted as soon as received and the bed kept shaded
and moist for two weeks the seed will germinate promptly, producing new plants which
should bloom in two years. This is an interesting and inexpensive means of securing
many new and beautiful plants. Start now and have a few new seedlings coming into

CRINUMS
These are large and showy, lily-like plants for the Lower South. They are appealing
and intriguing hallmarks of old southern gardens, which have come into a new surge
of populat·ity in recent years all over Southern United States and into California. The
Powelli varieties and C. bul1bispermum are half hardy and may be grown with good
protection as far north as the Ohio River Valley.
The culture of these beautiful plants is easy. They may be moved at any time, but
fa ll planting is recommended. If given a fertile soil, high in organic matter, and watered
frequently during the summer they will reward the gardener with their glossy foliage
and a profusion of fragrant blooms. They will survive (but not thrive) and furnish
some bloom during periods of neglect.

GLORIOSA ROTHSCHILDIANA
(The Climbing Lily)
Thes e gloriously beautiful, exotic plants attract more attention a nd more discussion
from visitors than any other plants at this nursery. They come from East Africa, but

will grow well in any part of the country where gladiolas may be grown. The vines are
3' to 6' long, supporting themselves by tendrils on the ends of the leaves. There are
numerous large, showy flowers of crimson and yellow with the entire flower changing to
light maroon after it is several days old. Excellent for arrangements or may be used
as a corsage.
Planting may be in sun or light shade, but the soil should be loose and friable.
Heavy soils should be lightened by the addition of sand and peat or compost. Planting
is done when the weather begins to warm up in the spring. Delivery in March of only
home-produced tubers which are free of mosaic disease.
CURCUMA LATIFOLIA
(G·i nger Lily)
This strikingly handsome foliage and flowering plant is the largest and probably
the best of the "Ginger or Hidden Lilies." It is a relatively recent import from India by
Mr. Wyndham Hayward of Winter Park, Florida. The spikes are 12" to 18" tall, coming
up fully two weeks before the foliage appears. They are a pinwheel of rosy lavender
bracts above bright yellow, snapdragon-like flowers. They remain in bloom and are
attractive for another two weel{S after the foliage appears. The foliage is very ornamental, making a beautiful specimen plant six feet tall.
Tubers may be left in the ground during the winter in the Lower Gulf Coast, but

Chionanthus virginica.-Commonly
known as the Fringetree or Grancy-graybeard.
Native of the Gulf Goast Plains, it belongs to the Ash Family. In the spring it is covered
with a mass of bluish-white flowers before the leaves appear. Requires the same culture
as the Dogwood and Azalea. Grows about twenty feet in height. Shipped bare boots, 2

Halesia diptera.-The
Silverbell is a small tree, attaining a height of about 25 feet.
The white flowers come in clusters of 3. to 6 in March and April, and are followed by
winged fruits. This plant is widely distributed along small streams in the uplands of
Louisiana, but may be used as an ornamental throughout the Lower South. Growth is

Erythrina herbacea.-Coral
Bean, Devil-in-the-Bush and Mamou are some of the
common names for this ornamental deciduous shrub which is a member of the Pea
Family. It blooms in the early summer on tall spikes of brilliant red flowers. In the fall
the brown pods open, disclosing sca1·let seed which retain their color indefinitely. A
native of sandy loam soils from North Carolina to Texas, this plant is of easy culture
