Welcome
Winter, a lingering season, is a time to gather golden moments,
Embark upon a sentimental journey, and enjoy every idle hour.
John Boswell
Golden moments, sentimental journeys and idle hours are, I hope, our stock
in trade, so it is with John Boswell’s wise words that I welcome you to the
New Year at the Sub Rooms.
An interesting combination of old friends and new ones; of young performers
and the more ‘experienced’; a new comedy festival and the return of the
Stroud Wassail forms our opening season of 2016. Of all the ballrooms, in
all the film screenings, in all the town, you walk into mine. Unusually for us,
we feature film this season with our three contributions to the March Stroud
Film Festival. Something for all the family in our three offerings and, yes,
that includes my favourite film of all time, Casablanca.
A warm welcome awaits you in Mr
Twitchett’s Coffee House and Bar.
Named after a former caretaker of the
Subscription Rooms, this cosy little bar
offers light meals, delicious coffee and a
selection of teas and other hot drinks. We
also have beers, wines and spirits, including
local ale and lager from Stroud Brewery.
There is regular live entertainment,
featuring the best of local acoustic and
electronic artists, actors and poets, and
the bar is the social hub of the Theatre and
Folk Festivals for artists and customers
alike. For sports fans, all free to air major
sporting events will be shown on our 40”
screen. The main door to Mr Twitchett’s is
on the lane between Bedford Street and
Kendrick Street, or you can come in
through the Sub Rooms’ front doors.
We’re here from 9am Monday to Saturday.
The bar is also open before and after all
our performances and in the evenings on
Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
To discuss our facilities or to tour our
building call us on 01453 760992 or email
[email protected]
Our music has a youthful focus, and a film connection, as we welcome wind
bands and jazz ensembles from Gloucestershire Music, as well as the
South Cotswold Youth Orchestra. There will also be young musicians
performing alongside some of the professional ensembles joining us in the
coming months. It really is a pleasure to have these young people on our
stage and it’s a great opportunity both for the musicians and for the rest of
us to admire and be encouraged by the next generation of players keeping
their various traditions alive.
There’s music of a very different tradition as we are joined by the unique
Bharatiya Vrund Gaan (The Indian Choir) with their Sounds of Divine India.
Indian classical music has a history at least as long as our Western music
and this concert explores traditional and contemporary works.
Finally, if you missed the chance to see the Colourscape installation during last
year’s Fringe Festival, you can experience some of their magic in the George
Room in the spring. As part of National Autism Week, we are hosting the
Colour/Music Sensory space and the week’s events will be split between pre
booked groups and public sessions. Details of the timings and price will be
available nearer the time, so keep an eye on our website.
Happy New Year all. Lots more to see inside so here’s to 2016 and remember
the Japanese proverb: One kind word can warm three winter months.

Saturday 9 January from 10.00am
A celebration of folk
traditions as the dark days
of winter are brought to life
with music, dance and
drama. The centrepiece is
the old tradition of
wassailing – wishing your neighbours good health and
prosperity for the year to come – featuring the Stroud
Wassail song and the Broad... a beast with horns!
The Wassailers will perform around town along with
hordes of Morris dancers, arriving at the door of the
Subscription Rooms for the Wassail at 12 noon. This
year they are joined by the International Mummers
Festival, bringing Christmas mummers’ plays from
across the country. There will be displays, workshops,
community singing and a procession. Join in the fun by
donning a fabulous disguise or a mask.
The Festival finishes with the 12th Night Revels – an
evening emulating the entertainments of medieval
celebrations. Costume and disguise are encouraged.
To prepare for the event, you can learn more at a series
of workshops at the Museum in the Park on the weekend
of 2nd/3rd January. Learn to sing a wassail and make a
raggy mummer’s jacket.

Take Two
Wednesday 10 February 8.00pm
Lake Two are Tony and Moira Cima (guitar, vocals and fiddle).
Expect a hugely varied mix of songs and tunes ranging from
traditional British and East European to swing, contemporary and
their own compositions. The variety seems to work well, as it
has captured audiences far and wide. (Don’t worry, they always
let them go after a hefty ransom).
Moonshine
Wednesday 9 March 8.00pm
Moonshine is a four piece contemporary folk group comprising
Annie Taylor (vocals and guitar), Jane Franklin (vocals), Dave
Rogers (percussion) and Arthur Grey (guitar, vocals, banjo).
They regularly perform at the White Horse Folk Club and recently
were invited to play at the ‘Live at the Tythe’ and ‘Riverfolk’
Festivals. Their repertoire is a lively variety, incorporating a mix
of contemporary and traditional songs.

The Comedy Double Act Workshop
With Cheryl Parmenter
Sat 27 February 10.00am-4.00pm
The aim of this session is to try to capture an
impression of spring flowers rather than produce
a botanical illustration. Composition, colour
mixing, adding a background, texture effects and
use of masking fluid and watercolour pencils will
be included. Participants will be expected to
bring a flower or flowering plant with them but the
tutor will also provide some for people to share.
The workshop is suitable for those with a little
drawing or painting experience. Please ask for a
materials list.
Laurel and Hardy, Morecambe and Wise, Cooper and Sykes,
Reeves and Mortimer… why are they so timelessly funny? This
workshop will take you through many of the performance
techniques used by the comic greats such as slapstick, parody,
comic timing, double takes, suspension, creating tension, comic
stops, duplication and reversal. We will trace the roots of the
double act back through history playing in comic duos such as
the Master and Servant, the Charlatan and Stooge, or the Dumb
and Dumber Clowns. This is an ideal workshop for anyone
wanting to develop confidence, gain ideas for devising, find
simple ways into comic characterisation or simply have fun.
Come on your own or bring a comic partner!
