Administration
Rosemary DePaolo
„ Chancellor
Rosemary DePaolo became chancellor of the University of North Carolina Wilmington in July 2003. Under her visionary
leadership, UNCW has attained national prominence as a model for teaching, research and service.
A highlight of her administration is an unprecedented university-wide strategic planning process which reflects the univerrsity’s commitment to providing its students with the most powerful learning experience possible.
Under her leadership, UNCW continues to rise in academic quality. The average SAT of incoming freshmen improved from
om
1104 in fall 2003 to 1157 in fall 2007, the third highest in the UNC system, behind only UNC Chapel Hill and NC State. Thee
53-point increase is unprecedented among any of the UNC schools.
Now in her fifth year at UNCW, DePaolo continues to lead the university’s rise in national prominence. In the 2008 edition
on
of America’s Best Colleges published by U.S.News & World Report, UNCW moved from seventh to the sixth place among the
best public regional master’s university in the South. Among the 119 public and private universities in the South that providee
a full range of undergraduate and master's level programs, UNCW improved its overall ranking from 20th in 2007 to 14th inn
the 2008 edition.
Under DePaolo’s leadership, for the fifth consecutive year, UNCW received the “Best in the Southeast” designation by
The Princeton Review. UNCW is one of only four North Carolina public universities included in Peterson’s Competitive Col-leges 2008: Top Colleges for Top Students. This is the first year UNCW has been featured in that publication.
In November 2006, UNCW received the Christa McAuliffe Award for Excellence in Teacher Education from the Americann
Association of State Colleges and Universities. This was the only university in North Carolina and one of only two in the
country to be so honored.
Throughout her time in office, Chancellor DePaolo has been an advocate for using the intellectual capital of the university to address issues of concern to the region, particularly in furthering economic development. Under her guidance,
UNCW achieved Millennial Campus designation of several sites to be used for public/private research ventures capitalizingg
on the university’s strengths in marine biotechnology among others.
She is actively involved in several initiatives to improve the university’s local and regional outreach efforts, including
serving as an ex-officio member of the Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, on the Board of Directors of the
Foundation of Renewal for Eastern North Carolina, as chair of the Southeastern Advisory Committee for Biotechnology of the
he NC Biotechnology Center,
Center and on the Board
of Directors and Executive Committee of the North Carolina Chamber, the state’s largest and most influential business group. She also serves on the Executive Board of the North
Carolina Campus Compact. In 2007/2008 she chaired the local United Way Campaign with a goal of raising $2.3 million for Brunswick, Pender and New Hanover counties.
A nationally recognized humanities scholar and leader in higher education, DePaolo has served on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, as well as the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. She also chairs the Colonial Athletic Association's Council of Presidents.
Before arriving in Wilmington, DePaolo was president of Georgia College & State University, the state’s designated public liberal arts university.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queens College of the City University of New York and a master of arts and a doctorate in 18th century English literature from Rutgers
University.
A native of Long Island, New York, DePaolo is married to Fred Wharton, a retired professor of English.

a Bachelor’s of science in health and exercise science from
Furman in 2001.
An Interview with UNCW Head Coach Kelly Van Houten
On What it Means to be a Head Coach: It is a great responsibility and privilege to be a head coach at any level. One has
the opportunity to make an impact on young women who are learning life lessons and growing up right in front of you.
To be a part of their lives at such a delicate time is an amazing experience and one I take very seriously. I welcome
the challenge of leading them on the field and mentoring them off the field. I am honored they have chosen to pursue
their college experience here at UNCW and have given me the chance to guide them through the challenges of being
a student-athlete. I want our players to graduate as women of character and be a positive influence on those they
come in contact with. My greatest joy is to see my players’ eyes “light up” when they are successful at whatever it is
they are striving to achieve.
On Expectations of First Season: We are looking to hit the ground running from the first game to final game. Our goals
are not only to get back to the CAA Tournament, but to also win there. We are striving for above .500 season with
new statistical records along the way. We have a great group of players who believe this program can be back at the
top again and they are willing to do whatever it takes to get it there.
On the Colonial Athletic Association: The CAA is a great conference, not only to participate athletically, but also academically. The CAA is very competitive from teams one through eight which makes for an exciting spring season. It is
great to compete against teams such as Hofstra who have a tradition of being successful for many years at the conference level as well as the next level. We are constantly being pushed by all the teams in the league to be at our best
and that will prepare us for the next level of play.
On Recruiting: It is important to choose players who have a love for the game and want to win more than anything. We
look for players who are successful in all aspects of their lives, on the field and in the classroom. We want players
who come from successful teams in high school and travel ball because that attitude of winning is contagious. It is
that success and confidence that will carry over to their teammates and through their college years.
On the Importance of Education: Before players can compete
on the field, they must first and foremost be successful in the
classroom. A college education will carry the players through
the rest of their lives long after their softball playing days are
over. We want 100 percent graduation from our players, and
we look to recruit those individuals who will get the job done in
the classroom as much as they do on the field.
On UNC Wilmington and What It Means To Be a Seahawk: What
an awesome place to be! The tradition of UNCW athletics is
strong, and I cannot imagine a better place to be as a first-time
head coach. Each day, I am surrounded by academic professionals who love the school and who want the best for the
students under their tutelage. I count it a privilege to be part
of an athletic department that strives for the best, not only in
its student-athletes, but also its coaches and staff. It truly is a
family environment where everyone is supporting each other
and looking to make each person a better individual. I am honored to have the opportunity to be part of a great university and
athletic department, and to call myself a Seahawk!

2009 UNCW Softball
On What it Takes to Build a Successful Program: As a coach, I
have to believe in what I do and that must be seen by the players. A program has to have the athletic ability to compete, but
there must be heart and passion in everything we do in order
to be successful. We have to do more than just show up for
practice; we have to believe in what we are doing and strive to
give our best at everything we do. One of my favorite quotes is:
It takes hard work and perseverance and teamwork because
no one gets there alone.

2009 UNCW Softball
With more than two decades of success athletically and academically, the Colonial Athletic Association has established a reputation as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences.
The CAA encompasses five of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta. The conference has produced 16 national team champions
in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 11 national
coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Even more impressive, however, are the honors
accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 20 NCAA post-graduate
scholars. In 2007-08, the CAA had five ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans and more than
1,700 of our 4,000 student-athletes received the Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least
a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport.
The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast and includes six of
the nation’s top 25 media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Washington, D.C. (8),
Atlanta (9) and Baltimore (24). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 19.7 million.
The CAA currently sponsors 22 sports with the addition of a 12-team football league in 2007. Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer,
swimming and diving, tennis, track and field and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in
basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track
and field and volleyball. In 2007-08, 26 teams earned NCAA Tournament berths and 46 student-athletes
received All-America honors.
Known nationally as a mid-major power in both men’s and women’s basketball, the conference also
excels in many other sports. CAA squads have combined to win 10 field hockey national titles since the
championship began in 1981. Delaware and Towson have each reached the Final Four of the NCAA
Men’s Lacrosse Championship. For the first time, three women’s soccer teams reached the second
round of the NCAA Tournament in 2007 and at least one men’s soccer team has advanced to the final
16 of the NCAA Championship in five of the last six years. Hofstra finished 15th overall at the NCAA
Wrestling Championship and William & Mary placed 15th nationally in men’s cross country. In baseball,
the CAA had 23 players chosen in the 2008 Major League draft, which was the second-highest total in
league history. Hofstra won its NCAA-record 11th-straight conference title in softball and reached the
NCAA regional finals. Individually, the W&M women’s tennis duo of Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina
Zoricic reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship in 2008 to earn All-America status
for the second straight season, and Georgia State golfer Joel Sjoholm placed 13th overall at the NCAA
Men’s Golf Championship.
CAA member institutions are committed to excellence in the classroom. The Colonial Academic
Alliance was created in 2002 by the league’s presidents with a goal of expanding their partnership to all
aspects of university life outside of intercollegiate athletics. Among the programs already established
are an undergraduate research conference, coordination of study abroad programs and granting visiting
academic status to student-athletes traveling to an away contest so that they have access to libraries,
academic resource centers and computer labs.
In 2002, two faculty members from CAA institutions were awarded academia’s most coveted distinction – the Nobel Prize. John B. Fenn, a research professor in the Department of Chemistry at Virginia
Commonwealth University, received the Nobel Prize for chemistry, and Vernon Smith, a professor of
economics and law at George Mason University, shared the Nobel Prize in economic sciences.
Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces
its roots back to 1983 when three of its current members- George Mason University, James Madison
University and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, the United
States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During
the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North
Carolina Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new association. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985.
Charter members George Mason, James Madison, UNC Wilmington and William and Mary were
joined by Old Dominion University in 1991 and by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The conference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University
in 2001. Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference on

The Athletic Academic Support Program provides a variety of services for all the university’s student-athletes.
The program offers academic counseling and support to help student-athletes successfully balancee
the demands of their athletic and academic schedules. Progress reports monitoring class attendance andd
test results and accessing tutorial needs are completed two times each semester by professors of classess
in which UNCW student-athletes are enrolled.
The University College is designed to assist students during their academic careers, with speciall
emphasis on the first and second years of study when they are expected to work toward fulfilling the basicc
studies requirements as outlined in the university catalog. The assistant athletic director for academics meetss
with student-athletes on a regular basis to assist in their academic success and monitor their progress towardd
a degree.
Each freshman is assigned to an advisor for personal assistance in selecting courses, maintainingg
required scholastic records and planning a complete University College educational program. The program’ss
primary objective is to assist students toward completing basic studies.
Several other programs are provided for academic support at UNCW, including the Writing/Readingg
Place, the Learning Center, the Math Lab, tutorial services, Disability Services, personal and career counsel-ing, study hall and a laptop program.
The Writing/Reading Place offers one-on-one tutoring for any academic writing assignment. Tutors helpp
students get started with a paper, offer aid in the development and organization of the project and providee
strategies that help at each stage of the composing process. Computers for word processing are availablee
in Randall Library.
The Learning Center helps all students develop skills necessary to become successful, independentt
learners through tutorial assistance, supplemental instruction, study skills workshops and individual consulta-tions.
Students desiring help with any level of math can find it at the Math Lab. Staffed by faculty and students,,
the center in Bear Hall takes students on a walk-in basis. Any tutorial assistance from the Writing/Readingg
Place, the Learning Center and the Math Lab is free and available to all student-athletes.
CHAMPS/Life Skills Meets Student-Athlete Needs
To prepare student-athletes for the challenges of life beyond the playing field, UNCW and the NCAA team
up in the popular CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. UNCW is currently one of 627 institutions involved in the popular
program.
The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program is designed to provide student-athletes with the education and the experiences to assist them in bridging the gap between college life and professional life in the work world and to make
meaningful contributions to their communities.
The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program focuses on five commitment areas viewed as critical to personal
growth:
(1) Academic Excellence - to support the academic progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual
development and graduation.
(2) Athletic Excellence - to build philosophical foundations for the development of athletic programs that
are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student-athlete.
(3) Personal Development - to support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for the student-athlete,
encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision-making skills.
(4) Career Development - to encourage each student-athlete to develop and pursue their career and life
goals.
(5) Service - to engage the student-athlete in service to his or her campus and surrounding communities.
The NCAA has worked with its member institutions and educational consultants to create instructional

Wilmington: Gem of the Coast

2009 UNCW Softball
Founded more than 250 years ago on the Cape Fear River, Wilmington has devel-oped into one of the fastest growing deep-water ports on the East Coast, combining eco-nomic potential with an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities.
Wilmington has a historic legacy that begins before the Revolutionary War and runss
through its stance as the last Atlantic port open to blockade runners during the Civil War..
e
Today, the continuous restoration and preservation in the historic district is a tribute to the
city’s proud heritage.
Historic Wilmington affords visitors the unique opportunity to enjoy a bustling seaportt
rich in shopping, dining, culture and the arts, while being only minutes away from barrierr
islands, broad beaches and the intracoastal waterway.
The 200-block Historic District highlighting the downtown area opens into a scenicc
riverfront park that overlooks the USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial.
A beautifully restored battleship, the USS North Carolina was considered the greatestt
sea weapon in the world when commissioned in 1941. During World War II, “The Show-boat” earned 15 battlestars and participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific from Guadalcanal to Okinawa. A memorial
since 1961, the battleship is dedicated to the men and women of all U.S. military services who defended our country during WWII.
One of Wilmington’s most unique features is the city’s status as the leading entertainment production center in the Southeast. The
city’s evolution into “Hollywood East” began when Dino DeLaurentis shot Stephen King’s Firestarter in 1984.
One year later, Dino DeLaurentis constructed a studio facility in the Port City and the complex, now owned by EUE/Screen Gems,
is the largest production studio east of Hollywood, offering nine sound stages on a 32-acre site near the Wilmington International Airport.
Numerous movies, television series and commericals have been filmed in Wilmington. The popular show, “Dawson’s Creek,” was
produced in Wilmington and shot frequently on the UNCW campus as well as Warner Bros. hit, “One Tree Hill.”
A film-friendly community, Wilmington residents have embraced the industry, often appearing as “extras” in movies. It’s not uncommon for celebrities the likes of Sandra Bullock, Nick Nolte, Julia Roberts, Tom Cruise and Dennis Hopper to be seen dining at a
restaurant, shopping at the mall or just simply walking along the shore.
Wrightsville Beach, just minutes away from Wilmington’s downtown area, is a year-round island resort. Wide, uncrowded beaches,
full service marinas and a variety of accommodations are complemented by excellent seafood restaurants, specialty shops and exciting
nightlife.
