Education is key to Development. Professional education
is a master key to life's vocation. “Right to education”, is a
strategic initiative, , the State made for its citizens to
ensure that every student of the nation could seek
education as a matter of right. The challenges of our
population demand increased opportunities on the part
of the State and quality supplementary efforts on the part
of the Churches and the other Education imparting
bodies.
PROSPECTUS
It is in this context that the SHIATS DU has been running
Distance Education Programmes and strengthened its
efforts with systems in place in that direction enhancing
opportunities for students who dare to be different to
make a mark in life.
SHIATS DU with its professional
base and dedicated teams of faculty is well set through its
DDE to reach out to the students who are otherwise
It is our wish and prayer that these initiatives would
supplement the ongoing efforts of the State making
professional education accessible and affordable.
I wish the DDE of our University, God's richest blessings as
they endeavour in the same spirit as the University itself to
impart and enhance the professional competence of the
enrolling students and through them contribute to the
process of nation building.
Dr.Jetti A.Oliver
Chancellor
However due to inertia of Conventional Education
system, Open and Distance Education is not sufficiently
recognized as an alternative which provides
educational opportunities. This in any way does not
necessarily means supplementing the Conventional
Education / Universities but to complement it for
achieving the national goal of expanding the
opportunities in higher education through the use of
technology in ODE. To meet the demands of the market
while providing quality education to the largest number,
It is an established fact that 'It would not be possible to
attain a gross enrolment ratio of 15 percent by 2015
without a massive expansion in ODE'.
Reliable external assessment is valued by employers,
students and other stakeholders in the given context of
a market driven economy where the law of free entry
and free exit prevails and the market reaches its
equilibrium by itself. However, to ensure the quality of
teaching and standard of education, the University has
developed an independent quality assurance cell to
ensure that the statutory quality compliances are
regularly met.
includes the study material in open and public domain
where the feedback of students, employing companies,
employment agencies are incorporated and a need
based curriculum is developed as a continuous process
in the development cycle.
We promote the idea to enable student to continue
education across universities. Our University has
stressed on the transition to a course credit system so
that the student are given due credits for the courses
completed here. Simultaneously we facilitate their
convergence with conventional universities system and
the student can join the conventional educational
system after completion of eligibility programme.
I am also happy to announce that Directorate has
initiated sophisticated scientific training programs
(apart from the eSelf Instructional Material
Development Team) and extended to counselors,
educators and others involved in the delivery chain.
They are trained in achieving the effective delivery of
content to students and other interest groups.
PROSPECTUS
The escalating costs and the stiff competition of institution
based learning excluded a great majority of the potential
seekers of higher and professional education. The
Community Colleges and the Directorates of Distance
Education (DDE) of the universities are the special
instruments world over geared to make education
accessible, off the campuses for career building.
These
are the cost effective models for pursuing higher and
professional education. These need to be encouraged
within the parameters of academic standards and other
requirements of the degrees, the students pursue.
unable to pursue on campus studies to shape themselves
for a better tomorrow.
Open and Distance Education (ODE) has an enormous
potential to spread higher education opportunities not
only to those who discontinue formal education on
account of economic or social compulsions, but also to
young school leavers who are simply unable to secure
admission in the formal stream at universities.
I trust, and pray that LORD JESUS CHRIST will bless our
nation with a wealth of knowledge. As we know that
knowledge is power of the people and the power comes
from God, i.e. Psalm 62:11 "God has spoken once,
Twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God."

Director's Message
About the U N I V E R S I T Y
Prof. (Dr.) Newman Fernandes
Allahabad Agricultural Institute was established in 1910, as a
Department of Allahabad Christian College (presently known as
Ewing Christian College). In 1911, the Agricultural and Technical
Departments of the College were shifted across the Jamuna River
from Allahabad Christian College, on a 264 acre of badly eroded
land purchased for the purpose of the Agricultural Institute.
Presently, the University owns and holds about 600 acres of land. In
2009, Allahabad Agricultural Institute - Deemed University was
rechristened as Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture,
Technology and Sciences (SHIATS) which is Christian Minority
Institution under article 30 of the constitution of India in honour of
the founder.

I am glad to inform our readers and prospective students
that our Directorate has opened a Model Distance
Education Centre in Allahabad (Sapru Road, Civil Lines)
for the benefit of students and our coordinators, in January
2011. On the same day, online education services were
launched for students throughout the world, with ultra
modern facilities.
Addressing the educationists in Kerala, on the occasion of
the inauguration of the Scholarship Fund of the State
Higher Education Council, on January 4, 2010, Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh announced that the Central
Government is working to revolutionize the Higher
Education System and make the country one of the
premier centres of education in the world.
PROSPECTUS
Let us hope for the best! In this regard, one has to focus our
attention on the large number of students in higher
education, who are studying in general colleges in India.
They belong to Commerce, Arts & Science streams as well
as Business Studies. Any serious effort in this direction will
definitely revolutionize higher education in India, and
qualified and competent human resources will be
available to the world.
3
In these circumstances, the only solution available to us is
the quality Open and Distance Education System. Are we
ready to make the best use of this system in India, or we
want to repeat the same mistakes that have been the cause
of the dormant state of the higher education? The concept
of Open and Distance Education cannot admit space and
time restriction! It is available to all, whatever their age
and wherever they may be. But the "license raj"
protagonists who want freedom for themselves, place
undue restrictions for others. How can the model of
territorial jurisdiction, which is followed for state
universities, be copied into the DNA of Open and Distance
Education?
The founder Christian leader received a command from SAVIOUR
AND LORD JESUS CHRIST to feed the hungry, and they followed it
by undertaking transfer of technology mission to enable farmers to
produce more food and achieve self-reliance. Dr. Sam
SHIATS Deemed University is committed to the goal of
facilitating and helping thousands of learners of whatever
age they may be, to pursue and complete higher
education studies.
PROSPECTUS
The attempt to revolutionize higher education in the
country is most welcome. In the last two decades, many
efforts have been made in this direction, the last one being
the appointment of the Knowledge Commission, under
the Chairmanship of Sam Pitroda. But lot of water has
flown over the Ganga, and the bulk of the report, remains
unimplemented. The reason is that those who lived in the
period and with the attitude of "license raj", cannot
implement reforms, neither provide flexibility and
autonomy which are the essential ingredients for an
"educational revolution" to happen.
If the bulk of students in the age group 18-25, wants to
pursue higher education in India, we realize that this is not
at all possible, because we have neither the infrastructure,
nor adequate human resources, nor we are prepared for
it!
The Institute's foundation was laid by the Christian Churches
and Organizations in India under the leadership of Dr. Sam
Higginbottom (a missionary of Presbyterian Church, USA) with the
belief that the improvement of Indian Agriculture is fundamental to
all material and spiritual progress of the country. True success in life
depends not only on the ability and technical training of the
individual but even more on his/ her moral character and attitude
towards life. Through teaching and other Christian educational
activities, the Institute tries to develop integrity, moral stamina and
unselfish idealism in its students. It seeks to base its mode of life and
activity on the teaching and example of SAVIOUR AND LORD
JESUS CHRIST and to persuade all men and women to do likewise.
Higginbottom believed that the Gospel must be preached with
action, thus, he envisioned the Institute to take up a leading role in
Agriculture, Technical, Industrial and Health Education to train
peasants, extension workers, agriculture graduates, and other rural
young people under the vision of the Gospel and the Plough.
In order to obtain more academic freedom and strengthen the
specialized programme of teaching, research and extension, a
proposal was submitted to the Ministry of Human Resource
Development, Govt. of India, on 31st August 1994, for granting the
Deemed University status to the Institute. Later, on 15th and 16th May
1997, a team of experts appointed by the University Grants
Commission visited the Institute. It was encouraging to learn about
the report submitted by the visiting team to the Commission that the
Institute has all infrastructural and academic means for granting the
Deemed University status. On March 15, 2000, Ministry of HRD,
Govt. of India, approved the recommendations of the University
Grants Commission and declared Allahabad Agricultural Institute
as Deemed University vide notification No. F.9-26/94-U.3 dated
March 15, 2000.
Further, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council
(NAAC) an autonomous Institution of the University Grants
Commission had in the year 2005, accredited the University at the
B++ Level (80–85%) for a period of five years. Now it is under
process at NAAC for next term grading. It is also accredited by ICAR
and Forestry Council. The University has also acquired the
Membership of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and of
Indian Agricultural Universities Association (IAUA). The Distance
Education Programme of the University has been approved by
UGC, New Delhi. The University is also member of International
We welcome all these learners and assure that we will
leave no stone unturned, to convert their dream into
reality.

The essence of Distance Education lies in its ability to impart quality
education to all without the requirement of attending regular classes any where and any time. Under distance education, high quality of
education and training is assured by the following means:
1. Teaching Philosophy
Unlike school education Distance Education cannot be imparted
solely through one way instruction. It can best be delivered by
reversible teaching learning process between teacher and
students community. Where teacher exposes student to the
domain of knowledge and encourages them to explore it by
growing through relevant text books, research publications and
articles published and available in print as well as e-form,
including in cyberspace and student interaction. The University
believes in developing the problem solving skills of students, by
utilizing subjective knowledge, as well as through the experience
of the world of work.
2. Teaching Practices
1. Conventional and Distance Mode
In Conventional mode, face to face instruction is given to
students, whereas in distance mode instruction through self
learning materials is supported with counselling, at the study
centres. It is supplemented by regular assignments, their
evaluation and feedback.
2. Evaluation
Usually conventional system has practice of annual
evaluation which burdens the students on one hand and
offers scope for selected study. In Distance mode, we
practice continuous evaluation through assignments and
Term End Semester Exam. This eases up burden of students
and forces students to go through the entire course of study,
in detail.
(a) Continuous Evaluation
The student's performance is routinely assessed by
continuous evaluation. 30% weightage is earmarked for
continuous evaluation done through assignments and
practicals.
(b) End Semester Examination
Both theory and practical examinations are conducted at the
end of the semester by SHIATS. This term-end examination
amounts to 70% of the total credits.
Grade System
Students are declared passed in each examination, if he/she obtains
atleast 40% marks in each paper concerned. In this course, the
university shall award grade instead of division. The grade shall be
awarded on the fallowing basis.
Grade A+ : Student obtaining above 75% marks in aggregate.
Grade A : Student obtaining above 60% marks and less than 75%
marks in aggregate.
Grade B : Student obtaining above 50% marks and Less than 60%
marks in aggregate.
Grade C : Student obtaining above 40% marks and less than 50%
marks in aggregate.
Grade D : Student obtaining less than 40% marks in aggregate.
7
Note : For detailed information on other aspects students are advised
to read Regulations for Distance Education Programmes, SHIATS.
(For the award of Degree, the student must
successful in each paper of all Semesters/Levels.)
TEACHING-LEARNING Methodology
3. Features of Distance Education (DE) System
Following are the features of the DE system :
(a) Self-explanatory Courseware
Each course participant is provided with study material in
learning blocks. Each unit in a block is written in selfinstructional style and consists of introduction and basic
concept, objectives, structure of unit, main contents, unit end
activities, key words and suggested reading.
(b) Assignments (with the objective of exploratory
learning)
Grasp of the subject and performance is also assessed by
assignments. Counsellors and instructors of the Distance
Education Study Centre (DESC) who also provide the
feedback on the student's performance, evaluate the
assignments.
(c) Practical Sessions
Depending upon the subject and field of the programme, the
required amount of practical training is imparted at the
Distance Education Study Centre (DESC).
(d) Delivery of Courses
Dispatch of SIM supported by on-line delivery before the
commencement of the session.
Counselling at Study Centre
Counselling is an important activity in distance education and is
slightly different from routine style classroom instruction. Counsellors
are experts in their respective field and they have continuous
interaction with students. They help students by clarifying their doubts,
helping them overcome their difficulties, which they may find, while
going through the text. These counselling sessions also help students
by allowing them to interact with their peers.
Program Structure
Study material is developed and designed by a team of noted
academicians and experts in the field associated with colleges,
universities and the industry. The curriculum so designed is scrutinized
by the experts and supervised by instructors. Internship is mandatory;
job training or internship is to give exposure to the world of work and
developing practical and problem solving skills.
Credit System
The Credit system is followed and every paper is allotted certain
credits. The number of credits allotted to each paper reflects its
importance in the core field of study. Single credit amounts to 30 hours
of study.
Support Services
The Distance Education Study Centre (DESC) act as a platform to
interact with counsellors, other students and also to use the library.
Students would be getting personal attention and support at these
centres, including hands-on training in real life processes and
procedures:
• Courseware for both theory and practicals is given to the students in
each program.
• Counselling sessions are conducted at Distance Education Study
Centre (DESC), at a time suitable to the students.
• Practical sessions are also conducted at the Distance Education
Study Centre (DESC).
• Assignments for evaluation and feedback.

Over the years the concept of management has grown
manifolds. Now it is being recognised as a profession.
Innovation & technological developments have brought the
most sophisticated products in the market; as a result of this,
business establishments have become complex which require
new managerial skills. The success of business enterprises
depends on the efficiency of management. Management is
often seen as the brain of the modern day organisation which
gives the thought to it and motivates the organisation to achieve
its target. Management gives a vision, mission, objective and
goal to the organisation and integrates all its departments.
The future managers should be capable enough of handling
the intense competition being thrown with the advent of
liberalization in the Indian economy. Keeping this in mind, DDE,
Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology &
Sciences, has devised the management programmes of the Post
Graduate & Undergraduate levels. These will surely help in
preparing the students to polish their skills to adopt the modern
day management techniques and be the part of the creamy
layer emerging B-schools of India.
