WHAT IS A DTS?
The SENTOR 201® distributed temperature sensor (DTS) is a
member of a family of temperature measurement systems that
use the entire length of an optical fibre as the sensing element
(hence the term distributed). A DTS collects thousands of
temperatures along an optical fibre that is placed in thermal contact with the item being monitored.
SENTOR 201® belongs to a special class of DTS which was developed in Australia. A distinguishing feature
of the SENTOR 201® is value. It records temperatures every 162mm and may be up to 4km long.
The Sentor 201 DTS consists of a web connected control unit that connects to the sensing fibre.
FIBRE
Temperature along the fibre is periodically recorded. Zones and alarms can easily be set up and emails or
SMS broadcast in response to thresholds or rates of change in zone maximum, minimum or average
temperature. Direct control via relay contacts is also available. Various connectivity options are available.
The sensing fibre may be standard communications grade fibre. Various cladding options are readily
available for challenging environments such as underground, heavy traffic or those with hazardous
chemicals. Specialty fibre is available for applications where the temperature the fibre is directly exposed to
are in the order of several hundreds of ⁰C.

EXAMPLE
Records may look like the following record taken on an underground power cable that is running along a
major road vehicle/bus system.
There is a lot more that can be done with such data. SENTOR® 201, 24-hour temperature record from a trial
at Endeavour Energy’s Parklea substation. 94 zones are monitored covering key assets including the 132kV
feeder cables, 11kV cables, power transformers, soil temperatures and a weather station.
