About CMS
At Case Management Services Ltd, our staff
provide community based rehabilita1on and
supported living to adults and children who
have sustained brain injuries and other serious
injuries.
The case manager will:
• assess needs
• formulate care and rehabilita1on plans
• set goals
• coordinate service provision
• assess risk
• monitor/evaluate input received by our
clients
The case manager may also be involved in
preparing medico-legal reports.
CMS provides a mul1disciplinary approach to
rehabilita1on, having Occupa1onal Therapists,
Physiotherapists, Psychologists and
Rehabilita1on Assistants. Our team has
experience of brain or spinal injury
rehabilita1on and community working. This
enables us to provide a comprehensive
rehabilita1on package.
CMS can also provide quan1fica1on reports
looking at the costs of past and future needs
for legal purposes.
Our other area of exper1se is providing
neuropsychological assessments, reports and
treatments.

We would like to welcome Dr Andrew
Harrison,
Consultant
Clinical
Neuropsychologist to our team. He
comes with a wealth of experience of
brain injury rehabilita1on at the Astley
Ainslie hospital and Programme Director of the Edinburgh
Brain Injury Rehabilita1on Training (EBIRT).
We would also like to welcome Sherrie
McGowan, Administra1ve Assistant who
joins our office team.
Members of the team have recently been
aAending EBIRT at the Astley Ainslie
Hospital, to keep up to date with current best prac1ce in
brain injury rehabillita1on, dealing with challenging
behaviour, acute management, physical rehabil1aiton and
longterm management. See more about our commitment
to CPD on page 3 of this edi1on.
We have also commenced trial of a new basket of outcome
measures to monitor client progress and case management
input. These outcome measures shall be conducted by
telephone where appropriate.
We are recrui1ng for a paediatric neuropsychologist. See
the advert on page 4 for further details.
Amanda Campbell recently completed the Great ScoBsh
Run at the start of October and raised over £200 for Spinal
Injuries Scotland—well done Amanda!

Hot Topic : CMS Ltd crosses the border into England
CMS Ltd have expanded into the North of England, with Case Managers Pauline PickeA
based in Leeds and Sharon Green in the North West, offering community-based
rehabilita1on programmes tailored to people with ABI and spinal injury, and also
Immediate Needs Assessments and Quant reports.
CMS Ltd have strong contacts with solicitors in Manchester, Carlisle, Leeds, Sheffield
and Newcastle, and are developing contacts with solicitors in other areas to share our
long standing exper1se in case management for the benefit of our clients.
We adhere to the BABICM and CMSUK competencies and standards of prac1ce. We
have also made links with Headway, Veterans Welfare Service, and BIRT, and have
entries in the Brain Injury Group Directory and the Spinal Injury Associa1on case
manager booklet.
Pauline and Sharon regularly aAend training and networking opportuni1es and look
forward to mee1ng future partners, and to further spreading the CMS approach to case

Brain Injury Rehabilitaon Trust - Perspecves on How People Regulate Their Behaviour
Case Management Services jointly sponsored this day with Digby Brown Solicitors. From a survey
we conducted, case management currently provides approximately one third of specialist brain
injury rehab in Scotland. The legal process is a powerful way to access the rehabilita1on and
con1nuing resources to rebuild a life.
Naomi Bidwell, Case Manager at CMS Ltd presented sharing her experience of seeing the
behavioural consequences of being involved in li1ga1on for clients following a brain injury. This
process can be stressful for the client both going through their problems with each expert and
seeing the reports which may seem very nega1ve – seBng out as they do the limita1ons and
prognosis etc. In addi1on Naomi spoke about how as part of team working with the client, we can
limit this impact and facilitate rehabilita1on and recovery.
Robert Swanney, Li1ga1on Partner at Digby Brown LLP also presented. His presenta1on brought
out some very relevant points to solicitors, case managers and those in the brain injury
rehabilita1on field. He spoke about how important it is to get all the right experts and ask the
right ques1ons to get a comprehensive view. However, a balance should be struck. He reiterated
that a large award can no doubt provide for some morale-boos1ng treats/luxuries – but at base
it’s not about the money, it’s about the future and the emphasis should be on this.

Meet the Team: Pauline Picke&
Q. How long have you been working with CMS?
A. I joined CMS in November 2012
Q. What is your professional background?
A. I am a Clinical Psychologist with experience in adult mental health and chronic
pain.
Q. What do you enjoy about working at CMS?
A. I enjoy the challenge of understanding brain and spinal injury, problem solving with the clients,
working with colleagues and mee1ng other professionals at training and networking events.
Q. What do you get up to outside of work?
A. I spend my 1me keeping my six children on track, enjoying family and my pets, conserva1on
volunteering, walking and bird watching, gardening, reading and theatre.
Q. Where would you go on your ideal holiday?
Iceland to swim in the blue lagoon, and to see glaciers and volcanoes.
Q. What 4 people (dead or alive) would you invite to a dinner party?
A. Desmond Tutu, Victoria Wood, Jessica Ennis and Freddie Mercury

CMS and Connuing Professional Development
Here at CMS we pride ourselves on our commitment to our staff and their ongoing learning and
professional development. This ranges from our own in-house training to aAending conferences and
seminars further afield.
In September we hosted a training day at our offices to help our team be beAer prepared to aAend
consulta1ons and court. David McIntosh, Li1ga1on Partner at Balfour + Manson, kindly led the day
and provided us with an invaluable insight in to how our work relates to the li1ga1on process, and
how we can prepare ourselves to speak to our recommenda1ons.
The ScoBsh Head Injury Forum was held in Aberdeen in September. The day included interes1ng
presenta1ons on employment opportuni1es following brain injury such as volunteering, driving
assessment and the common financial problems faced by clients and their families in the instance of
rela1onship breakdown.
Three of our staff recently aAended a day in the Court of Session in Edinburgh to observe the
li1ga1on process first hand. Reports back indicate they found this to be a thoroughly interes1ng day
and it gave them an idea of how emo1onally trauma1c the court process can be for the family of an
injured person.
Amanda aAended the Spinal Injuries Associa1on (SIA) day’s training for case managers regarding
spinal injuries in London this month. From our recent referrals we are aware that more and more
people with a spinal cord injury are requiring case management, and we want our case managers to
be as well prepared as possible to support our clients in the community. This training also provided
food for thought regarding long term issues and highlighted further equipment and services that
people with spinal cord injuries should have access to and therefore costs allowed for within
quan1fica1on report.
Naomi and Pauline aAended the Catastrophic Injuries Symposium, sponsored by SIA in Manchester in
September.
