Court matters
he Bombay High Court today deferred till 13 July
an appeal filed by Bollywood superstar Salman Khan
against the five-year sentence awarded to him in the hitand-run case, after the actor’s lawyer sought time to check
documents. Although the ‘paper book’ (compilation of
evidence and documents) is ready and copies have been
served to both the sides by the court), Salman’s counsel
Amit Desai urged for three weeks’ adjournment to check
whether the documents were in order.
Justice A R Joshi, however, granted adjournment till
13 July to carry out the drill of checking documents.
The actor’s lawyer said he would need to check whether
translation of any document in vernacular language is required
to be done in English. He also wanted to check whether
any documents were missing, in which case he would file
an application seeking a direction to place them on record.
Meanwhile, the proceedings on a complaint against AAP
leader Kumar Vishwas by a party volunteer alleging that
her life was ruined as he was not rebutting ‘rumours’ about
their illicit liaison, have been closed by the Delhi women’s
panel, its chief told Delhi High Court today. Justice V P
Vaish was told by Delhi Commission for Women (DCW)
Chairperson Barkha Singh’s counsel that ‘there are
no proceedings pending in the case’ before the body.
The DCW counsel further said that as the probe
against Vishwas was closed on 23 June, the present
petition becomes ‘infructuous’.

honoured toppers of Plus Two
examinations with cash prizes and
appreciation certificates. She also
wished them a bright future.
According to an official release
here today, the Chief Minister presented cheques worth Rs 50,000
each to 21 students, who studied in
government schools with Tamil as
a subject and passed the Plus Two
exams with flying colours.
Addressing them, she said, ‘You
all have come here after achieving top marks in class 12 exams. I
take immense pleasure in wishing
you all. I am proud of you. You all
should achieve top positions in life
and win the laurels of the whole
country. I pray the Almighty for your
bright future.’
The students expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Chief Minister for
her gesture and motivating words.
The release said that the government led by Jayalalithaa, besides
honouring the toppers of Plus Two
and Tenth standard exams, also

TN fishermen go
on indefinite fast
Rameswaram, July 1 (PTI):
About 250 fishermen began an indefinite fast in front of the bus stand
here today, demanding the release
of 14 fishermen arrested by the Sri
Lankan navy since June 2, and also
their boats.
N J Bose, president of the Tamilnadu and Puducherry Fishermen’s
Association, told reporters that 19
boats in the custody of the Sri Lankan
government had been totally damaged as they had been anchored and
not maintained.
He charged the BJP government with not fulfilling its election promises like retrieving
Katchathivu islet, allowing fishermen to fish in traditional areas,
creating a separate Ministry for
the fisheries department and
taking steps to prevent attacks on
Indian fishermen.
‘This is a dark period as far as
the fishermen are concerned.
The government should act and
take steps to get the fishermen
released,’ he said.

Former Union Telecom Minister
Dayanidhi Maran is likely to be questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the national capital
today. The DMK leader is slated to
be questioned in connection with a
case of allegedly using over 300 high
data capacity BSNL telecom lines at
his residence in Chennai during his
tenure as the Telecom Minister in the
UPA government.
According to CBI sources, Maran
was called for questioning on Monday but he skipped the scheduled
meeting. He was granted six weeks
anticipatory bail by the Madras High
Court on Tuesday.
Earlier, the Madras High Court had
granted bail to three officials of Sun
TV, who were arrested by CBI in connection with the case. They were V
Gowthaman, former additional private
secretary of Maran, Chief Technical
Officer S Kannan and electrician L
S Ravi.
The CBI has alleged nearly 323
residential lines were allegedly in
the name of the BSNL General Manager connecting the Boat House
residence of Maran with the office
of Sun TV through a dedicated underground cable during his tenure as

and the bank challan for paying the
remaining fee will be given after the
student finalises the college.

go scot free by accepting an agreement
on wedlock. While hearing the case the
apex court maintained that courts cannot take a soft approach on the issue.

Pillar junction.

Commodore Alok Bhatnagar on
Tuesday took over as Naval Officer-inCharge of Tamilnadu and Puducherry
from Commodore Amar K Mahadevan,
following the latter’s superannuation.

Director, International Fleet Review
at Integrated Headquarters Ministry of
Defence (Navy), New Delhi, a Defence
release here said.
In his 30 years of service, he has
served on various ships and shore
establishments. Among others, he had
commanded IN TRV A 71 (a Torpedo
Recovery Vessel), INS Prahar (an
indigenously built Missile Boat), INS
Kulish (an indigenously built Missile
Corvette) and INS Jalashwa (a Landing
Platform Dock), it said.
‘Some of his major shore appointments include Director Naval Plans
at IHQ MoD (Navy), Naval Attache in
Washington DC and Principal Director
International Fleet Review at IHQ MoD
(Navy), New Delhi,’ it added.

C
ricket administrators have never been short of ideas and
innovation and have come up with one thing or the other in
the past. The latest seems the most revolutionary as the Australian
and New Zealand boards announced plans to hold a day-night Test
during the forthcoming ‘summer of cricket’ Down Under.
The pink ball(s) to be used for what could be a momentous match

have been made to hold the first-ever day-night Test in Adelaide
from 27 November, there will be a lot of debate leading into the

Haddin spoke enthusiastically about it, on the basis that now the
decision was made there was no point in worrying.
Star all-rounder Shane Watson, who has been deeply involved
in discussions through his role on the executive of the Australian
Cricketers Association, said there was little point in drawing
conclusions until the match had been played, after which it would
be possible to decide whether it would be a fixture like day-night
ODI matches or a one-off like the World XI Super Test of 2005.
It seems a valid point as too much judgement can’t be made before
the game is played. The players are the ones who hold the key to the
longevity of such a plan (day-night Tests) and it is only appropriate
that their opinions are taken into consideration before the authorities
dive headlong into innovations.
The advent of T20 has eroded the popularity of the ODIs and
Tests to a great extent and changes are required to keep in tune
with times and if day-night Tests are a hit, there will be light at the
end of the tunnel.

witness a modest growth of five
to six per cent in the current
fiscal due to delays of underconstruction projects, according
to ratings agency ICRA.
The revenue growth for the
industry is expected to remain
weak in the first half of 2015 with
a growth rate of just three to four
per cent and operating margins
are likely to be flat, it said.
Occupancies in the hotel for
FY2015-16 is expected to improve by 2 to 4 per cent and
revenue per room will go up by
three to five per cent, said ICRA
in its research on the Indian
Hotel Industry.
‘In view of continued weakness
in the Indian Hotel industry,
ICRA has marginally revised
growth estimates for the industry
down to a top-line growth of five
to six per cent during 2015-16,
with flat operating margins’, the
report said.
It further added: ‘Room inventory in the country is expected
to grow by 12 per cent during
2015-16, as compared to four
per cent during 2014-15’, the
report said.

Encouraged by strong sales growth in India, Taiwanese handsets

with a local partner. HTC has manufacturing units in Taiwan and China.

In the first quarter alone, we have grown 150 per cent over the same

Gionee to invest $50 million
Chinese mobile handset player Gionee on Tuesday said it will invest
$50 million in India over the next three years to set up a manufacturing
facility. The company is in talks with a few contract manufacturers for
the facility but did not divulge further details.
‘The investment we are looking at is about $50 million over the next
three years. It will be contract manufacturing’, Gionee India Country
CEO and MD Arvind Vohra said.
Vohra said he visited various manufacturing facilities across the country during the last one month. The company, which achieved a turnover
of Rs 2,750 crore in 2014-15 is targeting to double it in the ongoing
financial year. To expand its retail footprint across the country, Gionee
has partnered with leading retail players including Spice, The Mobile

differently’ to the usual red ball and

Complaint against
AAP leader closed
The proceedings on a complaint
against AAP leader Kumar Vishwas
by a party volunteer alleging that her
life was ruined as he was not rebutting
‘rumours’ about their illicit liaison, have
been closed by the Delhi
women’s panel, its chief told
Delhi High Court today.
Justice V P Vaish was told
by Delhi Commission for
Women(DCW) Chairperson
Barkha Singh’s counsel that
‘there are no proceedings
pending in the case’ before
the body. The DCW counsel
further said that as the probe
against Vishwas was closed on 23
June, the present petition becomes
‘infructuous’.
The court, which was hearing a plea
by Vishwas seeking stay on the summons issued to him by DCW, however,
directed the Chairperson’s counsel to
file a ‘detailed report within two weeks
with regard to the oral submissions
made by the advocate’.
The Chairperson’s response came in
pursuance to the notice issued by the
high court to her on 22 May, as well as
the DCW and the woman complainant. Meanwhile, the court issued fresh
notice to the
complainant after it was informed that
notice was not served upon her as she
was not residing at the given address.
‘Delhi High Court Registry will serve the
summons to the complainant by hand,
at the new address provided,’ the court
said and listed the matter for 7 August.
The court was likely to
dispose of the case as
the proceedings were
dropped against Vishwas but the same could
not be done as Somnath Bharti, counsel for
the AAP leader, sought
a direction to restrain
DCW chief from holding
a press conference on
the issue.
Bharti also contended that a stricture must be passed against the
DCW and its Chairperson for misuse of office for political purposes
and urged the court that a word of
caution be issued that this forum
(DCW) should not be misused. To
this, the counsel for DCW Chairperson said that her
right cannot be curtailed. However,
she said she would seek instruction
on the issue raised by Bharti.
Bharti opposed the panel chief’s
request saying that Barkha Singh
was retiring on 18 July and hence her
counsel was seeking time.

ready and copies have been served

the annual Amarnath yatra today
commenced from Jammu as the
first batch of 1,280 pilgrims left for
the cave shrine in South Kashmir
Himalayas.
‘Amarnath yatra began from Jammu
today. A batch of 1,280 pilgrims have
left from Bhagwati Nagar base camp
in Jammu this morning for their onward journey to the 3,888 meters high
cave shrine of Amarnath in Kashmir

YSR Congress chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy and other accused in the
case pertaining to alleged quid-proquo investments made in his firms
today appeared before a special CBI
court here which posted the matter to
24 July.
Jagan, the prime accused in the case,
who represents Pulivendula Assembly seat in Kadapa district of Andhra
Pradesh, his close aide and financial
advisor V Vijay Sai Reddy and other
accused including former minister
Mopidevi Venkata Ramana, also appeared before the court in connection
with different aspects of the case.
Some IAS officers and representatives of several companies, who have
been named in the 11 charge sheets

their presence. The Judge adjourned
the hearing to 24 July.
The case pertains to alleged investments made by various private firms
and individuals to the tune of several
crores of rupees in Jagan’s businesses
as part of quid pro-quo arrangement

landslides triggered by heavy rains in
Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong

last night, a SSB officer said today.
The landslides have caused extensive damage to NH 10 (old NH 55A)
and NH 55, cutting off road and telecommunication link to Darjeeling and
Sikkim. 25 landslips were reported in
the three sub-divisions.

as planned,' the 'Dhobi Ghat' director said. She will be taking appropriate measures for the growth of the MAMI festival.
