OUR MISSION
The Howard County Community Dance Festival is a collaborative event shared
amongst the Howard County Arts Council, the Howard Community College
Dance Program and Arts and Humanities Division. The Festival gathers the
dancers of Howard County and the surrounding areas together in a celebration
including classes and performances in the hope that dance will continue to be
a valued and lasting component of the arts in Howard County. We endeavor to
feature dancers, teachers, and choreographers from the Baltimore/DC metro
area as a means of exposure and support in our small but vibrant community.
The Howard County Community Dance Festival is appropriate for dancers
ages 11 years of age and up.
The 2016 Howard County Community Dance
Festival is generously sponsored by:

FESTIVAL OVERVIEW
Saturday, February 20, 2016
We begin the day with Introductions and Opening Remarks in the Smith
Theatre at 10:30 am. Then each participant attends four classes of their choice
in a variety of dance and movement disciplines including Ballet, Contemporary
Modern, Jazz, Improvisation, Hip-Hop and much more. Classes run from
11:00 am to 5:20 pm, with breaks in between. In the afternoon there will
also be a special presentation in the HVPA lobby of stage combat for dance
presented by Jenny Male. Following classes, students take a dinner break in
which they are served pizza and snacks and have the opportunity to view a
dance film. To conclude the day each participant and their guests are invited
to attend the Gala Concert featuring professional dance companies from the
Baltimore / DC metro area at 7:00 pm in the Smith Theatre.
Sunday, February 21, 2016
Every studio participating in the Festival is eligible to present choreography
in the Student Showcase at 2:00 pm. Starting at 9:30 am each studio will have
allotted time on stage to space and light their choreography. Due to time
constraints, each studio will be limited to 10 minutes of choreography with
a maximum of two dance pieces. If all studios do not participate in the
Student Showcase, and time allows, studios may be able to present three
works, but can still not exceed the 10 minute limit. The dancers will have
use of the dance studios as dressing and warm up rooms. No food, gum,
drinks (except for water in closed containers) or street shoes are allowed in
the dance studios or performance areas.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Intermediate Ballet with Alison Crosby
This class is for dancers who have a solid foundation in classical ballet and are
ready to move. We will approach a standard 'ballet barre' with an emphasis
on alignment, correct hip placement and true turnout. Throughout the class
dancers will also work towards being musical with their movement and
finding a sense of performance and their unique artistry.
Intermediate Contemporary Ballet
with Desiree Koontz-Nachtrieb
This class works for intermediate to advanced dancers who have a good
working knowledge of classical ballet and post modern dance. In this class,
we dance first, perfect ourselves second. We dance to a variety of music
including classical composers, as well as current contemporary music artists.
Throughout the class we have a fabulous time working on: flexibility,
strength, musicality, fluidity, phrasing, and, of course, the thrill of moving!
Contemporary Modern with Nicole McClam
Rooted in the Bartenieff Fundamentals, the class aims to be body friendly.
Mashing together various forms from classical ballet to Limón technique
to yoga to West African dance, the class will move, but there will be space
for individuals to create their own experiences within the container.
Structured like many modern or contemporary classes, there will be
floor work, axial and locomotor sequences, and improvisation, but the
order in which they happen will be based on the students’ needs.
Afro-Brazilian Samba with Andrea Thompson
Heralding from hybrids of African foundations mixed in with Indigenous
influences, Afro Brazilian Samba is an exploration of rhythms, pacing and
diversity. Recommended for advanced intermediate dancers due to pacing
and difficulty of movement.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Tap with Heather Haffey
This class will be based upon both Broadway style and Hoofin' principles.
We will work on creating rhythms in groups to create our own music in
order to open up our ears to the joys of tapping. Class will end with a fun
combination for all levels to enjoy.
Hip Hop with Chris Law
This class will introduce students to hip-hop dance technique. Students
will develop and hone skills through warm-ups, drills and choreographed
routines while also examining the idea of embodied performance.
Floor-Barre® with Alison Crosby
Developed by Zena Rommett, the world-renowned pioneer in injury
prevention and rehabilitation for dancers, this class combines ballet with
anatomical principles of alignment and kinetic usage. By lying on the floor,
without the pressure of gravity, Floor-Barre® strengthens and properly
corrects the placement of the pelvis, hips and back with your mind and
body concentrated and working together. This revolutionary technique,
which has had a steadily growing following for several decades, is based on
the idea that without the pull of gravity (hence, lying on the floor) students
are better able to learn movements and correct alignment.
Improvisation with Elizabeth Terschuur
This workshop is geared toward all individuals looking to broaden their
current movement vocabulary and introduce the notion of composed
weight negotiation between partners. It will expose the novice mover to
notions of counter balance, counter pull, tension reading, nuance control,
impulse control, and basic lifting skills. Throughout the course of the
workshop we will flow from one structure to the next resulting in a free
form group improvisation at the end. Bring an open mind and be ready
to connect!

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
West African Dance Techniques with Mya Ajanku
This class will offer a window into the life and dance traditions of
countries such as Senegal, Liberia, Gambia, Guinea and the Ivory Coast.
Through movement and discussion we explore the purpose of the dances,
and how the techniques vary from region to region. Class structure
includes a full body warm-up, movement breakdown in center, and across
the floor movement, all performed to live percussion. Emphasis is on both
musicality and comprehension of movement as we explore the communal
environment that is essential in West African technique classes.
Street Jazz with Jessica Beach
Technical components of Hip Hop and commercial Jazz will fuse together
in a performance motivated class. Dancers can expect a high energy class
with emphasis on style and performance techniques.
Contemporary Jazz with Jessica Beach
Fundamentals of Modern and Jazz dance meld together in a fast paced
movement and technique class. Dancers will incorporate details of
emotional connection to music and movement, in a supportive and creative
environment with focus on applying individual artistry within a
choreographic phrase.
Yoga for Dancers with Michele Bickley
This Yoga Flow Class is open to all levels. Immerse yourself in a dynamic
Flow, set to music, that culminates with deep relaxation. Learn tools to
become more flexible, strong, and balanced, while cultivating an inner
sense of peace, joy, and self-love. Yoga is the perfect support for a dancer
and can help you take your technique and art to new levels!
