Most exquisitely, it was the incredibly slow-simmer build in
intensity and tension that finally erupted into something so
inevitably powerful, that only those without a pulse would have
avoided at least a tingled spine, and more likely, for those
willing to be carried away, an elevated soul (in Outwater’s words
“a mind-blowing” experience).

The 2010/11 Season Was Truly an Extraordinary Season for the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony.
As we reflect on the past Season the word that comes to mind is extraordinary. There were so many notable moments
and important achievements that we are pleased to share with you in the pages of this Annual Report. Below are some
of the key highlights from the 2010/11 Season:










We announced the early renewal of Edwin Outwater’s contract as Music Director for 5 more seasons.
We sold 914 more concert subscriptions than the prior season, resulting in a $112,332 increase in subscription
revenue.
The KWS was named in the “Top 5 Things To Do” by the National Post for the Beethoven and Your Brain
performance at Koerner Hall, with neurologist Daniel Levitin.
The KWS gave the world premiere of a new commission, Whirling Dervish, for whirling dervish and orchestra by
Canadian composer Brian Current.
We announced a new programming partnership with the Sony Centre in Toronto resulting in increased exposure for
the KWS in Toronto. In 2010/11 performances at the Sony Centre included Final Fantasy and Bugs Bunny at the
Symphony.
The KWS was honoured with an invitation from, and subsequently performed with the Mariinsky (Kirov) Ballet for 7
performances of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake at the Sony Centre in Toronto.
We concluded our second year at the Conrad Centre for the Performing Arts.
At the conclusion of the 2010/11 Season we announced a new 4-year agreement with our musicians.
Orchestra members Allene Chomyn, 1st Violin and Anita Walsh, Principal 2nd Violin were named Top 40 Under 40
by The Waterloo Region Record.
We ended the 2010/11 Season with a positive balance, reducing the accumulated deficit.
The KWS’ financial success this season is directly attributable to the incredible additional support that we received
from the Region of Waterloo, City of Kitchener, City of Waterloo, Savvas and Christine Chamberlain and from you—our
donors and members. Although we ended the 2010/11 Season with an operating surplus we remain well aware that our
accumulated deficit represents more than 10% of our annual operating expenditures and we will need to achieve
similar year end results over the next six seasons to eliminate this deficit. The Board and administration of the KWS are
mindful of this and are committed to achieving long-term sustainability and vibrancy. This season was truly unique in
the history of this orchestra, and we have much to celebrate!

Chair of the Board

Music Director Report
The 2010-2011 season was full of artistic highlights
and extraordinary concert experiences.
After a festive opening gala featuring violinist James Ehnes, our Signature Series
featured an extraordinary performance by our French horn section playing Schumann's
Konzertstück; a beautiful collaboration with the Da Capo Chamber Choir in Schubert's
Mass in G Major; memorable appearances by guest conductors Simon Streatfeild and
Andrew Grams; and closing concerts with the women of the Grand Philharmonic Choir
performing Holst's The Planets and Debussy's Nocturnes.
Particularly memorable for me were Measha Breuggergosman's performance of Weill's
The Seven Deadly Sins with cabaret performer Isengart, as well as a commission,
Whirling Dervish by Brian Current. Whirling Dervish left the audience spellbound, and I
haven't ever received as much profound and positive feedback about a new work. Both
of these concerts reaffirmed my belief that risk-taking and unique experiences are the
key to revitalizing classical music.
Our Intersections series continued to break new ground, with performances of Beethoven and Your Brain with
neurologist Daniel Levitin and Frankenstein!! with author Daniel Handler. Both concerts were also performed at
Koerner Hall in Toronto and Beethoven and Your Brain was such a success that it was booked again this season in
Toronto. Perhaps our most diverse audience ever, attended our Intersections concert with Dan Deacon, a concert
featuring two world premieres and an audience participation piece that ended with a lullaby being sung through a
mobile phone to a rapt audience. It was unexpected and completely touching.
Under the artistic direction of Stephen Sitarski, our Baroque and Beyond series continued to delight our audiences in
Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph with performances of all six Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos featuring our orchestra
members in solo roles.
Our Pops Series began with an encore of Cirque de la Symphony and included our first Pops sell-out in many seasons
for Bugs Bunny at the Symphony. The orchestra played several concerts at the Sony Centre in Toronto including an
extraordinary run of performances of Swan Lake with the Kirov Ballet.
It was a season that went from strength to strength. Looking back on the season, it seems incredibly rich and creative
to me. I honestly know of very few orchestras in North America that could offer such quality and creativity in a single
season. I am very proud to be a part of this amazing musical family.

BEETHOVEN INVOKES STOMPING AND EVEN SOME WHOOP-PAHS AT KW SYMPHONY
You knew something was up when ticket stubs were exchanged for clicker devices upon entry to the concert - technology
enabling audience responses to be instantaneously tallied and presented in graph form on a screen behind the stage.
Having armed the audience with analysis tools to enhance musical appreciation, Outwater then instructed the crowd to simply
listen to a particular segment in the 4th movement and - abandoning the traditional decorum of contemporary classical music
concerts - shout out, clap, dance, or make some kind of noise if and when they felt so inspired.
A sustained suspension in the strings created a simmering and irresistible tension lasting several bars - other instruments
eventually joining into the steadily evolving, climbing and intensifying segment.
A smattering of notes created an increasingly ambiguous tonality, the music gradually shifting from a distinctly dark and
foreboding minor - mystically shedding the skin of the former musical netherworld - finally bursting forth into an unabashedly
glorious and triumphal major theme.
With licence from the maestro to act as they please, the audience responded first with a pair of isolated whoops and hollers,
then collected into a community outburst of spontaneous clapping, stomping, yelping and whoop-pah!

FIVE THINGS TO DO THIS WEEK: OCTOBER 23-29
# 1 Part concert, part lecture, but mostly a cool interactive cognition experiment, Beethoven and Your Brain intersperses the
thoughts of renowned neuroscientist Daniel Levitin (The World in Six Songs) with the audience’s (electronic) reactions to the
legendary composer’s Fifth Symphony as rendered by the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony orchestra.
FIVE THINGS TO DO THIS WEEK: APRIL 9-15
# 2 There’s Looney Tunes, and then there’s, um, Bugs Bunny at the Symphony, which is exactly what it sounds like: Saturday
morning cartoons writ large. Big screen projections of such classic Warner Bros. fare as What’s Opera, Doc? and The Rabbit of
Seville will be accompanied by a wild romp of a score performed by the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony.
SYMPHONY OFFERS NIGHTS OF CONTRASTS
The orchestra was fully immersed in this piece, at home with its natural flow and varied expressive range. Highlights included
the periodic walls of sound from a resounding 10-piece brass section, the ethereally distant buzzing strings, numerous solo
fragments (notably bassoon and flute), and familiar melodic lines interwoven with complex meanderings.
Most exquisitely, it was the incredibly slow-simmer build in intensity and tension that finally erupted into something so
inevitably powerful, that only those without a pulse would have avoided at least a tingled spine, and more likely, for those
willing to be carried away, an elevated soul (in Outwater’s words “a mind-blowing” experience).

WITH OUTWATER AT THE WHEEL, ORCHESTRA GOES ON
THRILLING RIDE WITH NEW MUSIC, AND OLD
The second piece - Whirling Dervish for Sufi Whirling and Symphony
Orchestra - was a world premier by Canadian composer Brian Current,
commissioned by Outwater. Inspired by the ancient ritual ceremony, the
piece felt as much a service as a performance, Outwater requesting the
audience not clap at the end in respect for the rites presented.
Starting gently with shimmering percussive textures outlining the arch of
a pulse, a man and young woman appeared, cloaked in cape slowly
advancing to the music. With a tall hat symbolic of a tombstone, the man
(Raquib Brian Burke) shed his outer garment, revealing the traditional
flowing garb of the whirling dervish, gradually circling and then spinning
over what would be over 20 minutes of movement.
With no less than four percussionists in full-tilt and in full kit, the piece
was a spiralling, rhythmic wonder, transporting the audience into the
movement onstage. ... This superbly unconventional work continued the
seemingly limitless imagination of Outwater and the artists he engages to
forward his vision for the orchestra.

Education Programs
In partnership with schools and school boards, the KWS School
Concerts Program ties directly to the Ontario Ministry of
Education Curriculum, provides resources for teachers, brings
KWS musicians into classrooms and students into the concert
hall. In 2010/11 this program was presented to 12,000 grade
1 - 6 students, the highest number in KWS history. KWS
musicians visited over 80 schools enhancing the students’
experience with their classroom presentations prior to and
following each concert. This program is offered free of charge to
schools, reducing barriers to music education.
The Kinderconcerts and Family Series continued to expose
audiences of all ages to live orchestral music. The lobby activities
prior to the Kinderconcerts and Family Series concerts gave
young people a chance to try instruments, take a Music for Young
Children class, engage in related creative activities and featured
instrument demonstrations by KWS musicians.
High school students had the opportunity to take part in the
“Design a Concert” program where they designed, marketed and
produced their own KWS concert. As well, over 600 grade 7 and
8 students came to the Conrad Centre to attend a rehearsal and
meet with KWS staff to learn more about careers within the
organization.
Our Pathways to Education music program had its second year of offering free music lessons and instrument loans to
high school students from underserved neighbourhoods. Their final concert in April was a happy gathering of
violinists, pianists, guitarists, cellists and vocalists.
In the summer of 2011 the KWS hosted summer camps at the Conrad Centre for the very first time. In all, there
were three weeks of music camps; a one-week string intensive with Associate Concertmaster Lance Ouellette and two
weeks of “My First Music Lesson” camps for children aged 6-10. The faculty introducing musical instruments to
young children included KWS Musicians; Vicky Dvorak, Cathy Anderson, Jane Maness and Barbara Hankins.

Principal Bassoon, Cedric Coleman Retires After 37 Years
Principal Bassoon, Cedric Coleman, retired at the conclusion of the 2010/11 Season after 37
years. At the time of his retirement Cedric was the longest serving orchestra member. In
describing Cedric’s contributions to the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Music Director Edwin
Outwater said “It has been a privilege to work with Cedric Coleman. When I think about Cedric, the
word elegance immediately comes to mind. His musical ideas and phrases are elegant: not too
much, always just right. He never draws attention to himself, but has a lot to say as a musician and
leader. That’s quite an elegant way to be, I think. But to be truly elegant, as Cedric is, there has to
be a foundation of integrity and passion. He has shown us both, time and time again, in music and
in life. He gives us all strength, because we know how deeply he cares about each of us, our orchestra, and music. He
is a shining example of how to be musician, and I know his elegant integrity will be a part of our orchestra forever.”
Congratulations and thank you, Cedric.
The 2010 Mabel Krug Award—Edward and Susan Moskal
The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony confers its most prestigious award, The Mabel Krug
Award, upon an individual who has provided meritorious service to the Association over
a long period of time and has displayed uncommon devotion. This award is designed to
honour an individual who has for many years supported the orchestra through active
work, energetic membership and leadership positions, and whose efforts have led to the
advancement of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony.
At the 2010 Annual General Meeting we were delighted to honour two individuals who
exemplify these qualities; Edward and Susan Moskal. They have been significant subscribers, volunteers, donors and
friends to the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony for many years. Both have held leadership positions with the Board and
the Volunteer Committee and both have worked side by side with KWS staff in the office for many years. They are
often on the front line – welcoming our artists arriving at airports and welcoming audiences at venues everywhere.
They both have incredible drive to get the job done, energy in abundance which is an inspiration to all of us and an
enthusiasm for the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony which is as constant as it is contagious. Congratulations and thank
you to Sue and Ed!
The 2010 Rachel Smith-Spencer Award—Laurie Castello
The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony presents an annual employee recognition award, The Rachel
Smith-Spencer Award to an outstanding KWS employee for continued exemplary service. This
award is presented to a staff member who has exhibited exceptional job performance, dedication,
positive attitude, and contributions to the KWS exceeding expectations.
At the 2010 Annual General Meeting we were delighted to present the first Rachel-Smith Spencer Award to a staff member who has had a long association with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. Laurie Castello began working in the Operations Department when she first moved to
Kitchener in 1987 and was responsible at that time for concert production, touring and recording. Early in 2009, she
rejoined the KWS staff as Director of Operations and for nearly three years has been responsible for all orchestra and
artistic administration, building operations and scheduling. Every day, she works to make the KWS a better organization and a better place to work. Without hesitation she lends her hand to any task and is always willing to help anyone in need. She continually goes above and beyond all expectations and has a genuine concern for every employee.
We are proud to have her as a member of our staff. Congratulations and thank you to Laurie!

The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Foundation Inc. (KWSF) was incorporated in 1992 as an independent, not-forprofit corporation by members of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra Association, to aid it “in the
advancement of orchestra music and the production of orchestra concerts by serving as the permanent custodian
of the endowment fund for the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony”. The value of the KWS endowment as of
December 31, 2010 was just over $3.1 million with $2,393,372 held by the Ontario Arts Foundation and the
balance held by the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Foundation.
During the 2010/11 Season the Foundation applied for, and received, a grant of $71,108 from the Department
of Canadian Heritage. This was a matching grant made possible by support from the Musagetes Foundation
received during the 2009/10 Season. Currently, the Foundation is updating the KWSF Planned Giving Program
and the Foundation will become increasingly active over the next few seasons. In the meantime, any donor can
make an endowment or legacy gift to the KWS Foundation through bequests, insurance, or other means to ensure
the KWS continues as the Region’s core, cultural organization for generations to come. The Trustees for the
Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Foundation are listed on page 20 of this report.
The KWS is pleased to acknowledge the following contributors to the
2010/11 Annual Fund.

Volunteer Committee
The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony thanks
the members of the KWS Volunteer
Committee for all the hard work they do to
support the KWS!
The KWS Volunteer Committee contributed $54,000 to the
KWS during 2010/11. This year’s Love of Music Marathon
and House & Garden Tour of Note were huge successes,
netting over $19,000 and $30,000 respectively. These are
only two of the fundraising events undertaken by this amazing group of people, who put in over 7,000 volunteer hours
during the 2010/11 Season!
The Volunteer Committee awarded $14,000 in scholarships to
KWS Youth Orchestra members in the Spring 2011.

Community Outreach
KWS Brass Quintet opens new ICU Wing
In 2010/11 the KWS presented community programs across Waterloo
Region. Notable events included the KWS Brass Quintet performance
for the opening of a new ICU wing at Grand River Hospital in
December, 2010 and a string quintet performance for Eastwood
Collegiate to raise funds to replace aging instruments and equipment.
Over the Holiday Season the KWS also organized performances at the
Grand River Regional Cancer Centre and in January, the KWS provided
performances for the inaugural meetings of the new Councils for the
City of Kitchener, City of Waterloo and the Regional Municipality of
Waterloo.
In September, 2010 the KWS hosted an Open House for the general public at the Conrad
Centre featuring eight performances by local performing artists. Members of the KWS
performed, as did the Grand Philharmonic Youth Choir, MT Space, Lost & Found, KW
Youth Theatre, Neruda Productions, Singer’s Theatre, dancers, drummers and more.
Many Youth Orchestra Program musicians also performed in small ensembles at events
throughout the community. KWS patrons have enjoyed hearing them in the lobby prior to
concerts and they are often heard at public and private events of all kinds.
The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony thanks the members of its Community Engagement
Committee for their advice and invaluable insight: Linda Fabi (Chair), Isabel Cisterna,
Diane Freeman, Kokila Khanna, Alicia Mah, Ramy Nassar, Maedith Radlein and Rod
Regier.

Development Report
Each season we continue to be amazed at the generosity of our donors and
sponsors.
During the 2010/11 Season, the KWS raised over $3.3 million from public and private sources, with close to $1.8
million coming from people, companies, and foundations. With your help, we were able to reach our Annual Fund
goal again this year and end the season successfully. Thank you!
The guiding principles of the KWS staff call for integrity and stewardship of the charitable dollars raised. We are
pleased to report that funds raised for the KWS annual fund were done so at an approximate cost of 9 cents for
each dollar raised, comparing favourably to the industry standard of 35 cents per dollar raised, and ensuring that
your donations support the KWS’s core artistic and education programs.
Marilyn Murray and David Paleczny enjoyed an on-stage rehearsal of Holst, The Planets. Laura Robertson and Steve Hornett caught up with
Rachel Thomas and James Guy and Larry Larson, Principal Trumpet chat at the Holiday Chair Sponsor event.
Mike Rae of BMO Harris Private Bank and gracious hosts Penny & Manfred Conrad welcome Gala attendees, violin soloist James Ehnes greets
guests, Jill and Michael Callaghan and Director of Development, Jana Gordon following the performance.
