legance and charm meet community service at this
year's CCA Decorators' Showhouse being held at
Rockfield Manor in September. The Show House is
one of the major fund raising events of the Chesapeake Cancer
Alliance and promises to be a stunning experience for sponsors
and visitors alike. Rockfield Manor, which was designed by
architect, Alfred Cookman Leach and built in the prairie style
in 1921 was the original home of Charles H. McComas. In
1991 Harford County purchased the property and deeded
the land to the Town of Bel Air for use as a community park.
In 1996, the Town purchased the remaining five acres of the
Estate, including the house and outbuildings, and created the
nine-member Rockfield Foundation to oversee the use of the
House and property. Today the Manor functions as a premier
event space for weddings and corporate events.

Show House will benefit Cancer LifeNet and the Patricia D. and
M. Scot Kaufman Cancer Center at Upper Chesapeake Health
in Bel Air.
All fundraising dollars support Harford residents diagnosed with
cancer, as well as their families or friends, through the Cancer LifeNet
program at Upper Chesapeake Health. This program is invaluable
to our community, offering free-of-charge services to all residents
of Harford and Cecil Counties, regardless of where they receive
their cancer treatment. Services include education and assistance
from oncology nurse navigators, counseling from oncology social
workers, contacts with support groups and educational programs,
and support from specially trained volunteer navigators who have
personal experience with cancer. All of these services are free of
charge due to the generosity of the volunteers and the community
who participate in the CCA’s fundraising events.
CCA seeks to improve education, treatment, research, and
resources for cancer patients. With over 150 active members, the
organization continues to grow as more people become aware
of its mission. Credit is due to the CCA Showhouse Chairs for
a fabulous job of putting together such a dynamic line-up of
decorators for this year's show (Pat Cieri, Martha Dauphinais,
Donna M. Dickey, Sandy Guzewich, and Kitty Pickett) and all
the volunteers and designers. Don't miss this stylish event and
great opportunity to do a little shopping.

The Rockfield Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit corporation,
incorporated under the laws of Maryland. It is managed by a
volunteer Board of Directors to promote and operate Rockfield
Manor for the benefit of the Bel Air community.

E
xecutive Director of Ripken Stadium, Amy Venuto, has
baseball in her blood. She fell in love with the Ripken
family and the bond they shared over their love of baseball,
and knew she had something to contribute. Amy's father raised
her on baseball, and the time they spent together had a huge
impact in her life. By the age of twelve, all she wanted to do was
work in baseball. "Baseball is so much more than a sport. There
is a culture and love behind it," said Amy. "Everything that Cal
Jr. & Bill do is in honor of their father, and that's why I feel like
I'm such a good fit for Ripken baseball," she explained.
From attending minor league baseball games with her father in
Portland, Oregon to continuing her softball career at a collegiate
level, Amy Venuto never wavered in her baseball goals. The
mother of one daughter and a softball coach at Harford Tech,
she launched her career in baseball immediately after graduating
from Carlton College in Minnesota. “Working in professional
sports you have to move all over the place,” Venuto explains, “It
is rare to have this type of career and live in such an amazing place
like Harford County.” Amy has done her fair share of traveling,
packing her bags and moving from Minnesota to Washington
State to Las Vegas and finally, Maryland.
In 2002, Amy settled in Harford County with her daughter
after getting offered the opportunity to work with Cal Ripken
Jr. on the up-and-coming Aberdeen IronBirds. Making her
mark for the IronBirds in their first year was no difficulty for
New York – Penn’s Women Executive of the Year. In her first
year at Ripken, Amy oversaw ticket sales and the box office,
becoming one of the first in minor league history to completely
sell out a stadium multiple times.
Meeting Amy in person is an absolute pleasure. She is practically
bubbling over with ideas and excitement over new projects in the
works. Her personality is outgoing, and her community-based
outlook is refreshing. Her impressive resume continues to grow.
She recently returned to the stadium after managing the Cal
Ripken World Series for several years. Amy is responsible for
building the Events department at the stadium, and did such
a good job that Baseball America named them the "Best Minor
League Venue."
Something very near and dear to her heart is the "Women in
Baseball Leadership Event," which she helped create six years
ago. "Women are very much a minority in baseball," said
Amy who is the MC for the event and serves on the steering
committee. The event includes women from major and minor
league baseball. "I don't think of myself as a feminist, but I think
it's so important for women to come together and support each
other in these leadership roles," Amy explained.
“This is Harford County’s team,” Venuto explains, “When
people come to our ballpark they expect something special
because of the Ripken name. They want an experience that will
be over the top, and we do our best to deliver.” Community
and family-fun is the number one priority for Amy and her
dedicated team.
A night at Ripken Stadium is a great family-fun outing and when
watching the game itself you feel all the excitement that you would
feel at Camden Yards, without the hassle of going downtown! The
athletes themselves may be young, but they all have the potential
to make it to the major leagues. The amenities at the stadium are
wonderful as well, featuring 6 luxury boxes, 2-tier crab and picnic
pavilion, open-air café, and a party deck to name just a few. There’s
a Kids Zone that has 2 moon bounces, batting and pitching games
and even an arcade to keep the kids occupied until the 9th inning.
The food is the best of the ballpark, with hamburgers, nachos,
hotdogs, crab pretzels, and of course, ice cold beer.
Amy has been busy preparing for the
2013 season, and implementing some of
her new ideas. Summer events include fireworks,
notable games (Super Hero Night, Women Appreciation Night,
Military Appreciation Night), Dream Car Sprint, Bimmerfest, and
Cal Ripken World Series. The World Series is Harford County's
only nationally televised event. Sixteen Babe Ruth League teams
from all over the world come to compete with all the emotion and
intensity of the majors. This event is free to the public, so don't
miss this unique experience August 8-19th.
Amy has lots of plans to keep the community coming back. A
Season Seat membership program is given to dedicated fans to give
them exclusive opportunities that the average fan doesn’t get such as
networking opportunities as well as special events and behind-thescenes experiences. She's reaching out to local business attempting
to forge strong community ties and opportunities for fans as well
as the local businesses.

Director shares
her love of Harford
Tourism creates jobs, enhances the local economy, and improves the quality of life for local residents. It
encourages the preservation of traditional customs, arts, landmarks and events that might otherwise have
been allowed to wane ...and it creates civic pride. No one is more dedicated to the concept of tourism and
the benefits to our community, than Wini Roche. You may have seen her in her now famous "Where's
Wini?" video blog, which showcases local attractions on the Harford Tourism website. We sat down to
talk to Wini and find out why tourism is so important to our community, and how locals can benefit
from and participate in our local tourism industry.

had grown to the point that it was decided to move the Tourism Office to Bel Air as a
division of the Office of Economic Development (OED). Wini was off again to start a
project from the ground floor. Her new office developed the "Harford County... Love
it!" Campaign, and managed to get the new Tourism website up and running. It is
Wini's job to find the best in Harford County and promote it, so visitors will patronize
local businesses. Not just to visitors from outside the County, but to the locals as well.
"I just love promoting people, experiences, places... it's in my blood. It's what I love to
do" Wini beamed.
"Sports are one of the major assets for tourism in the County. With the new APGFCU
Arena, Ripken Baseball and the Cedar Lane Fields, tournaments and sporting events are
bringing people in from all over. This is something that can really give Harford an edge,"
said Wini. She currently partners with "Team Maryland" which is a sports cooperative
that aims to attract sporting events in Maryland, and is a great resource for bringing
new business activity to Harford. People come here to participate in or watch sporting
events, they stay overnight in hotels and spend money with the local businesses.
A
unt Winnie Belle set the tone when Wini was only a child, starting the first
Tourism Office in Dorchester County where they lived. Both women were
named after Wini's great grandmother, and her Aunt's over the-the-top
personality made a big impression on her. "Everyone knew her. She was bigger-than-life
and she put all her energy into promoting the County. If she saw visitors, she would
stop her car and whip out a brochure," joked Wini. When it was time to start thinking
about a career, Wini decided to study travel and tourism. She worked at several locations
on the Eastern Shore, but it was while working as a front desk clerk at a hotel in St.
Michael's that she realized she wanted to expand her career in tourism, so she headed
back to school.
Wini went to Towson State University to study Mass Communication, and worked
in publishing and spent her summers serving crabs at the Crab Claw in St Michaels,
while finishing her degree. As fortune had it, Aunt Winnie Belle's original job as Tourism
Director for Dorchester County became available. There had been several other directors
since her Aunt had founded the office. "Coming home was really exciting. It was like
passing the baton to the next generation. I was able to build on her foundation, and I
planted some seeds for the future." Wini worked in Cambridge for 8 years promoting
Dorchester County and was integral in the development of Sailwinds Park on Route 50,
just as you come over the Choptank River Bridge. The 30-million dollar project included
a 16,000 sq. ft. event center, waterfront development projects and a brand new visitors
center. "Sailwinds Park was one of the reasons I was so excited to go home. I got very
involved in getting the visitors center approved and funded," said Wini. One of the things
she is most proud of is her involvement of the inception of Heritage Tourism, like the
Harriet Tubman Trail. "We started talking about the value of these types of themes for
tourism development and how it could also foster a sense of healing," Wini explained.
After eight years, Wini was ready for a change. She heard of an opening as the Director
of PR & Special Events at the Baltimore Zoo, and couldn't pass up the opportunity. Her
short time at the zoo was an invaluable experience. "The animals were really amazing,
but the work wasn't exactly what I was looking for," she said. Her curiosity was peaked
when she found out that Havre de Grace was creating an Office of Tourism and they
needed a Director. "There were a lot of similarities between my hometown and Havre de
Grace, and the opportunity to start something from the ground up was really appealing,"
smiled Wini. She fell in love with Havre de Grace and moved here in 2003.
If you are a big fan of First Fridays... you can thank Wini. She started the very first one
in Havre de Grace, along with creating a whole strategic plan for tourism to develop
in Harford, with the support of the Craig administration. The local Tourism industry

"I think Havre de Grace is a perfect wedding destination, along with farms and other
unique venues around the county which attract large groups of people" grinned Wini.
"It's such a great marriage of traditional and non-traditional, tourist type services, which
not only helps the hotels and big business, but benefits the local florists, and bakers...
our small businesses." You can find a whole section of wedding resources on the website.
Bus trips are another resource that Wini would like to build upon. Currently her office
promotes a"Chocoholics" and a "Wine and Roses" tour. "People don't travel by bus as
much as they used to, but if you can find something they love, like the "Chocoholics
Tour", it's a great way to get people into our County for a visit," said Wini. The
office of OED & Tourism "Buy Local" campaign has also had a lot of impact on the
community. "If you are trying to market your business, you are so much better off being
part of a destination. If you are a local citizen you will have a much better experience if
you take the time to patronize the local shops," Wini asserted.
Wini has been an active member of the Maryland Tourism Council for over a decade.
She has led several statewide advocacy efforts including events like Tourism Day in
Annapolis, where hundreds of business representatives come to raise the awareness of
the economic impact of tourism around the state. When she isn’t bogged down with
advocacy and legislative issues she is coordinating promotions such as Restaurant Week
or her video blog series, Where’s Wini? Exposing visitors and locals alike to exciting
places that may not have known about in Harford County. “Videos and social media
are a low cost way to engage and build a customer base. Plus, personally they are a fun
learning experience!”
“Being a part of economic development has heightened the awareness for tourism
as an important industry to Harford County. Tourism has been a key element of the
economic development team and has created a unique synergy within the office. We all
work together to improve the economy and quality of life for our citizens”. The Office
of tourism is looking towards the future of Harford County and where tourism fits
in. We’re doing a lot but there is much more that we could be doing, said Wini. The
tourism Office is 100% funded by government, and Wini knows their future is going
to hinge on their goals of developing strong business alliances. We aren’t going to be able
to grow our program and add to the services we provide to our businesses unless we can
expand on our public-private partnership, she said.
"I really hope that our local population spends some time this Summer exploring
Harford County and all that we have to offer," concluded Wini. If you see Wini out
and about, don't forget to congratulate her... she's getting married this Summer, in
Harford County of course.

Screening
Are You A Candidate?
Lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer-related
deaths in the US. This disease is responsible for more
deaths annually than breast, prostate, and colorectal
cancers combined.
It is estimated that over 80 percent of lung cancers could be cured if
detected at an early stage. Recent studies have shown that this type of
lung screening can reduce the risk of death by 20 percent. Fortunately,
Upper Chesapeake Health now provides lung screening at Upper
Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air. Here are some facts on this
important screening program:
REDUCED-DOSE LUNG CANCER SCREENING CT PROGRAM
A lung screening uses a low dose CT scan of the chest to evaluate current
or previous smokers for lung cancer. The lung screening is a non-invasive,
painless procedure that looks for lung nodules in just a few minutes. It is
performed on a CT scanner which is more precise at detecting nodules or
cancer than standard chest x-rays. A lung nodule or tumor can be benign
(noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). By detecting malignant tumors
at an early stage with CT lung screening, intervention can occur at a time
when the cancer may still be curable and localized to the lungs.
WHO SHOULD BE SCREENED?
Screening candidates should:
• be 55-74 years of age
• AND currently smoke or have quit less than 15 years ago
• AND have smoked for a TOTAL of 30 pack-years
(pack-years = number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day
multiplied by TOTAL number of years smoking)
• Have no symptoms and have no history of lung cancer
WHEN ARE SCREENING RESULTS AVAILABLE?
All lung CT results are reviewed by a multidisciplinary team at Upper
Chesapeake Health that includes a thoracic surgeon, oncologist,
pulmonologist and radiologist. Results are provided directly to the referring
physician to be discussed with the participant.

hris Scarlato was feeling restless. After years
of running his own mechanical contracting
company, he was ready for a change. As an avid
boater, he was well aware of the marina on Water Street,
seemingly quiet and up for sale. His wife, Lachelle a
successful real estate agent affiliated with Long and
Foster, was running her own business, when Chris
came home one day and shared his big idea.
The marina store at the Water Street marina houses
their kayak and paddle board showroom, rental
and other office space. Brightly colored kayaks
and paddle boards hang on the walls of the newly
refurbished building.
"We did everything we could to salvage and
re-use what we found, and tried to keep the
architectural integrity of the property in tact,"
said Lachelle.
"I've always seen the potential here.
I'm a water rat... absolutely, and this opportunity
offered the potential for a real lifestyle change,"
grinned Chris.
Lachelle, who was completely unprepared for this new
plan, didn't take long to warm up to the idea. They
bought the marina on Water Street and the Log Pond
Marina on Concord Street in November of 2012, and
launched themselves tirelessly into the task of getting
ready for the 2013 season.
Both properties needed to be renovated and updated,
and the existing business needed to be organized.
Chris and his team of family and friends started on the
outside, overhauling the outbuildings on the property,
and sorting through the boats on the property. Lachelle
went to work on the inside, hauling out unwanted items,
organizing the office and getting the business ready for
the boaters who would soon begin to arrive.

marine store.
Lodging is available to transient boaters, or
anyone who just want to get away, in a completely
remodeled apartment in the main building or a
55ft Chris Craft Yacht. The apartment, which
accommodates two people, offers beautiful views
of the river, and the dark woods and nautically
appointed interior leave you feeling at home. The
yacht, which is moored at the dock, has been
completely remodeled and updated. With three
large staterooms, three baths, and large kitchen,
dining and living spaces. This boat can also be
chartered for a really special occasion.
"We've done most of the work in house, between
our family and friends, and we are so appreciative,"
said Chris "They showed up every weekend,"
chimed in Lachelle.
Dredging was the first order of business, creating a
marine environment that can easily handle the larger
boats, and will also encourage more transient ships to
visit. They began replacing the floating docks with
EZ Dock which are docks that just don’t float, they
actually enhance steadiness thanks to the compression
and suction of the hollow chambers on the underside.
Chris and Lachelle have left no detail unattended, and
there unconventional approach to running a marina
really expands on what you would typically expect.
If you like being pampered... imagine yourself
enjoying an indulgent massage from their in house
therapist. For the more practical... how about a new
look for your outdoor furniture. Stop into Starbird
Canvas in the back of the sales office to check out
some swatches. They offer full service canvas repair.
Why buy new outdoor furniture when all you need
is new cushions?
Coming in time for Summer 2014 is their brand
new event space created in the old 1860's icehouse.
With panoramic views of the Susquehanna River,
this gorgeous facility will be able to hold 250 guests
inside and several hundred more in tents outside.
"We embrace boaters and non-nauticals alike," said
Lachelle. "We have so many opportunities for the
community as a whole to enjoy the amenities here."
As a full service marine yard, Havre de Grace Marine
Center offers the sale of new and pre-owned boats,
storage, mechanical and fiberglass repairs, general boat
repair, sailboat rigging, new sails and sail repair. They
cater to power and sail boats alike, and so far it sounds
like a pretty high-end marina... but wait there is more!
This is the part I'm really excited about... what do they
have to offer for the "non-nautical", or boatless people
like myself? The answer is ...a lot! Everything from
extended stay lodging, yacht cruises, kayak and paddle
board sales and rentals, an event space and super easy

access to the water and Summer fun.
Most of you are familiar with kayaks, but may
need a little more info on the paddle boards. This
fast-growing sport is a fun, easy way to go play on
the water. With a minimum of equipment, you
can paddle anything from ocean surf to lakes and
rivers... no waves required. It's almost like walking
on water! Yoga classes on the paddle boards or
floating barge are offered as well as Eco Tours by
Kayak. Boat charters are also available for a spin
around the Susquehanna or a catered dinner cruise
to the Inner Harbor.

of people, it would put us in an entirely different
bracket. So that's what we did," said Lachelle

When the remarkable opportunity to write a column in Harford Style Magazine
came up, I was really challenged to come up with a name for my article. I wanted
to speak to the untapped talents in women and encourage them to, as the Army
says... be all you can be.

As a single mother of 4 kids, I know from personal experience that so many

meant to be. My goal or wish is that by sharing some of my stories and insight,
it will resonate with you and will help you reach for your dreams.

My entrance into radio was one of a twist of fate. I had no radio background nor
did I ever consider it a career. I knew I like to talk to people and tell their stories,
but that was where being a reporter worked for me. Being interviewed on the
air about my involvement with Hurricane Irene started my path down a road of
self discovery. When I was approached about becoming an on-air talent, my first
thought was that I am too old to be starting a new career, much less one that I
have no knowledge about. Talking to friends and family about making this rather
large decision, I was given every reason why I was foolish for considering it. The
self doubt began to appear along with the guilt for considering making a change.
However, before I made a final decision, as I do with most important decisions,
I sat down with my children (ages at the time, 15, 14, 10 and 7) and asked them
what they thought. Children have the privilege of not having preconceived notions
about who we should or ought to be. With four pairs of loving eyes gazing intently
on my face, they gave me every reason why I should take the opportunity.
In that moment, I realized something really important. Everyone comes to
the table with their own negativity or thoughts on the way things should be.
However, if we are to be true to ourselves, we need to realize that no one can
tell us who we are meant to be but ourselves. With this new found knowledge,
I took a leap of faith and began my radio career.
This journey into self discovery has brought out parts of me that I either never
knew existed or never allowed to show, but has created a sense of happiness and
completeness that I only dreamed of having. With that in mind, “Be You” seems
to explain what I hope every woman out there will take away from my column.
So if my experience has any lesson it would be to follow your heart and ambitions,
realizing that you are the only one who can make your dreams come true. All
women have undiscovered talents; once you discover yours, "reach for the goal."
If I can, in the future share stories of how women have overcome life's obstacles
and done things they never thought they could do and the story motivates just
one reader's inner strength, then my efforts will be
worthwhile. Oh, by the way in my case, my kids now
tell their friends that I work for the government. Seems
being on the radio isn’t cool these days?

Participating in sports activities is a great way to
meet new friends, get some exercise, enjoy healthy
competition and have a lot of fun. That's what married
couple Michael Axelsson & Krystin Porcella thought
when they founded Play Action Sports & Social Club
for Harford adults 21 and over.

It's Time for Mom & Dad to Have Some Fun!
Michael & Krystin began Play Action Sports & Social Club in
2004 in an attempt to create an opportunity for adults to have the
same type of recreational activities here in Harford County that is
so readily available to our children. They started with eighty adults
in their leagues, and tripled their membership within the first three
years. Their current membership is over 1,200 and growing.
Mike & Krystin both have strong athletic backgrounds. Considered
somewhat of a daredevil, Mike played lacrosse in college and loves
extreme sports. Krystin is a U.S. lacrosse champion, and has taken the
women's lacrosse team to Germany twice and won gold. She speaks
all over the East Coast and runs her own business. Kelly Griffin, who
had known the couple for years, joined the team in 2006. "They
handle all the athletic stuff", she said "and I handle the math."
Play Action offers leagues in kickball, football, dodgeball and softball.
Kelly takes the time to get to know each person and makes sure they
find their way to the right team. The leagues are broken into three
groups depending on the level of competition you want, and each is
sponsored by a downtown Bel Air bar. MaGerks Pub sponsors the
serious players, while Looney's sponsors the league who wants to test
their athletic prowess in a more relaxed environment. For those who
are just out for fun... Dark Horse Saloon is the league for them. After
the game, players head back to the restaurant to socialize with the
team and enjoy bar specials.
"We want our members to come out and have a good time", said
Kelly. There are no big commitments or practices, you just show
up and play. Party bus trips are a regular affair, like Orioles opening
day and floppy hat night. pub strolls, charity events and other
opportunities to socialize and help the community are part of the
overall experience.

I hope some of these suggestions will encourage you to take a few hours and explore Havre de Grace. I live here, and not one day goes
by that I'm not in awe of how naturally beautiful it is. Defined by the Susquehanna River sweeping into the Chesapeake Bay and the
graceful ships that dissapear towards the horizon, Havre de Grace provides a glimpse back in time, and encourages you to stop an smell
the roses. The advantage to living so close to such a resource is that you don't have to plan to far ahead. Had a long day... take a drive up
after dinner and walk the Promenade. Looking for some place fun to walk the dogs... grab your furry friends and head out to one of our
parks. Havre de Grace has great restaurants (especially if you like seafood), bountiful shopping, and lots of great stuff to do, including
First Fridays, and the upcoming Graw Days Festival. Hope to see you there!

Let’s not let the GPS make maps useless!
Stored in trunks or dust-covered in our
coat closets... Let’s bring them out for some
DIY fun in honor of summer travel!
O
h, hello summer! Hello drinks with little umbrellas. Hello lightening bugs and the sound of flip-flops flipping and flopping. Hello
to the smell of sun tan lotion and sand in the car. And hello to my favorite hot weather pastime, summer traveling! My suitcase stays
out of the attic for the duration of summer that is for sure! A local beach, the west coast, across the big ocean to a different country,
or traveling to an island in a Beach Boys song…hello summer, please stay as long as you can.
Traveling in age of the GPS, maps don’t come in handy too often anymore. I can still remember the last time I used a map. I was a senior in high
school and my friend and I were lost somewhere in the heart of Washington D.C. To help our situation, I got the map from the trunk that was
given to me by my parents who knew my lack of directional skills. We still couldn’t figure out where we were. We turned it, studied it, scratched
our heads and still could not figure out where we were in that map. (note to old self: Hey, Elle…it was Baltimore map, not D.C.)
INGREDIENTS:
Modge Podge in gloss • maps • piece of furniture
razor blade • paint • pencil • sand paper
If you already have a piece of furniture that you
would like to transform, great! If not, find a
little gem at an antique store or consignment
shop that you can paint an adorable color of
your choice. I just loved the look of a vintage
desk for this project, it reminded me of
geography class. Little hint: pick a color that is a
primary color in the map so it blends well!
Once your furniture has dried and is ready,
decide on the cutest places to cover the piece
with the map. Now, there are two ways to make
the perfect fitting map cut-outs to go on areas
you’ve picked. I used both ways. The first way
is on the top of the desk. I put the map on top
and folded the edges over the sides to create
heavy creases. When I lifted it from the desk,
the crease was a perfect outline for cutting with
the razor blade. Pick up your map, and using
a razor, you can cut to the line on the crease
you created. The second way I used was for
the chair backs. I held up the map to the front,
pressing it against the chair. On the back, I
used a pencil to trace the back’s shape for each
one. Again, I cut it out using the razor.

The next day, add one more coating to the top
and let dry overnight.
Now that you have a thick coating on top, it
is almost finished! It will be a little rough no
matter how evenly you spread it, so sand the
top lightly to make a smooth finish! Ohh la
la, all done!
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX:
Use markers or stickers before adding the
modge podge showing your favorite places.
Or, after you are done step 4, use dry erase
markers to circle places you want to go so
you can adjust it when you finally visit these
destinations!
You don’t have to just use furniture, try a lamp
shade, the outside of a vase, the back of a clear
plate, coasters. The possibilities are endless
(and on the bright side you will never be lost).
Once you are sure they fit perfectly and you’ve
made any necessary adjustments, open your
modge podge. Put a coating on the furniture
where the map will cover using your hands
or a sponge (let’s not be a afraid to get a little
dirty because using your hands is the best turn
out!). Lay the map pieces you have cut on top
and smooth it on top of the modge podge.
Wait a few hours until dry and add a coating

Why not use sheets of music, lyrics of your
favorite songs, pages from your favorite book
instead of maps?

Getting the Perfect Sear on Your Scallops
Searing Sea Scallops couldn't be easier! Turn
your burner on to medium-high heat, and allow
the saute pan to get hot. Meanwhile, pat dry the
scallops using a paper towel. Season with Kosher
Salt & Pepper. Add a small amount of cooking oil
to the hot pan, and carefully add the scallops one
at a time. Searing them on each side for about
2 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove the
Scallops from the saute pan and place them on
the serving plate.

For this review, we strayed a bit from our typical novel. The club went rogue
and ventured into the realm of entertaining. We couldn’t pass up a road trip
to Baltimore’s premier private restaurant club, The Center Club.
Lifebridge Health held a fundraising event featuring Danielle Rollins’ book,
Soirée. Rollins was in town not only to promote her book, but to publicly
thank the medical and surgical team that saved her daughter’s leg after a
traumatic accident. She was inspired. She is no stranger to fine dining or
writing as she is a frequent contributor to Vernada magazine and Southern
Living. Her motto is a variation of the “when life gives you lemons, make
lemonade” ...but she adds vodka, a floral garnish, and puts a striped straw in
it! The other basic message is that presentation really is everything.
The book is a mid-sized coffee table book with glorious photographs
interspersed with recipes. But, if you actually read the text, you will be
brought into Rollins’ inner sanctum of some very personal and private
moments in her life. She states that entertaining isn’t about the money...
however, it is evident that a hefty budget surely helps. It would be hard to
really think that these extensive table settings weren’t assembled by a dutiful
staff under the masterful forelady. Regardless, the end result shows her
hours of detailed planning.
Some of the negative comments regarding the book in other reviews are
based on the author’s lifestyle and personal preferences. Clearly, themes
such as “I’m Dreaming of a Blonde Christmas” will only appeal to a very
narrow audience and may in fact be offensive to some. So, why take the risk
and include it? The answer is fairly obvious since the book is not about us;
it is about Danielle Rollins.
Recommendations: Do try some of Ms. Rollins’ clever tricks such as
encasing vodka bottles in decorative ice for a cold weather party or hunting
for accessories at flea markets. Most recipes in the book are do-able with
some substitutions for those hard to find or expensive ingredients so give
a few a try. Rollins uses a lot of simple syrup variations for her signature
cocktails. Many are champagne-based drinks, which we sampled, then
returned to our glasses of wine, staying true to our book club charter.
What Martha Stewart achieves in jeans with a garden trowel in hand,
Danielle Rollins does in a silk frock and vintage silver. It’s enough to make
you want to grab a can of metallic spray paint and have a little fun being
creative. So, until next time ….
She introduces some interesting themes and dress guidelines such as
“Bonfire Chic”. She suggests bribery with cookies to solve noise issues with
the neighbors (but why not just invite them?).

Walking and cycling around is one of the best ways to really get to know a community.
Moving at a slower place allows you to connect with people, as well as notice those things
you might not otherwise see as you whiz by in your car at 40 mph. While Harford County
is a pretty car-centric community, there are efforts underway to help make it a safer and
easier to get around without one.
The County Council recently approved the Harford County Bike and Pedestrian Master
Plan. This is the county blue print for moving toward a more walkable and bikeable
community. The Town of Bel Air is also working on their own Bicycle and Pedestrian
Plan, with the goal of receiving a Bike Friendly Community designation from the League
of American Bicyclists. Bel Air is presently accepting community input on areas within the
town limits in need of improvement. Visit www.healthyharford.org to link to information
on both of these plans. Also, all Harford County Transit buses are equipped with bike racks,
to make going car free a little easier.
Local planners and County Council members are working with staff from the State Highway
Administration on improvements to Route 543 in Riverside, Route 22 in Aberdeen, and
all along Route 40 to create safer walking and biking conditions. During the second half of
August, Healthy Harford, in coordination with Harford County Health Department, and
the Baltimore Metropolitan Council, will be bringing the Street Smart Program to Harford
County. Over 20 percent of all traffic fatalities in Maryland involve a pedestrian, and in
Harford County the pedestrian injury rate has significantly increased. Street Smart is a bike
and pedestrian safety education program designed to reduce pedestrian and cyclist injuries by
targeting high injury areas and educating drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists there about safe
usage of roadways, and then backing that up with increased enforcement of existing traffic
regulations. The high injury areas targeted for Street Smart intervention this year will be Main
St., Bel Air, Route. 24 north of Bel Air, and Route 40 at Tree Top in Edgewood. Towards the
end of August there will also be a surveillance of pedestrian safety in the Route 40/Joppatowne
Rd. area of Joppatowne. Both the Street Smart program and the pedestrian safety surveillance
events are in coordination with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office and the Harford County
Public Schools to coincide with the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year.
I’ve asked a number of local people who regularly love to get around our community by
foot or on bike for a list of their favorite places to explore. The list was pretty extensive, but
here are a couple of their favorites.
Walk the old downtowns of Bel Air, Havre de Grace, & Aberdeen
Each downtown has its own unique flare with their historic buildings, little shops and
restaurants, and tucked away secret gardens. As this is the season of sidewalk dining,
outdoor fairs, and live music, it’s a perfect time to get out and explore. Bel Air has a
new garden seating area by the Armory on Main Street, and a brand new playground at
Plumtree Park on Thomas Street. Aberdeen’s Festival Park has a fantastic playground and
some great little restaurants on the streets surrounding the park. Havre de Grace, of course
has the Promenade, which alone makes it worth the visit, but it was its part in history as a
stop on the Underground Railroad as well its role in the War of 1812 that interested many
people. One history buff mentioned a walk through the streets and allies of Havre de Grace
as a great way to get a glimpse of that history; one less known stop being the Currier Bed
and Breakfast which was safe house for fugitive slaves. New curb cutouts and improved
crosswalks and traffic signals throughout the county have made getting around, especially
with a stroller or wheelchair, easier.
Kilgore Falls

Tucked away in Rocks State Park, Maryland’s second highest free-falling waterfall is located on
the Falling Branch section of Deer Creek in the northern end of the county. Given how crowded
it can be on weekends, I was amazed at the number of longtime residents who said they had never
heard of it. Once a meeting place for Susquehannock Indians, Kilgore Falls is a beautiful place
to hike and perfect place to cool off. Take Route. 24 north, turn left on St. Mary’s Road, and
continue on to Falling Branch Road. Look for the parking lot on the right hand side of the road.
Harford Glen
This is a great little park hidden at the western end of Wheel Road in Bel Air. Owned by the
Harford County Public School system, this 245 acre park comes complete with marked trails,
a 75 acre lake, streams, wooden pier, and fishing pond. Perfect for hiking, bird watching,
and family outings, it is an oasis in the middle of town. The park is generally open when the
Harford County Public Schools are NOT in session; primarily summers and weekends. You
can check their website www.hcps.org/harfordglen for exact times.
Letter Boxing: Jerusalem Mills and Mariner’s Point Park
Both Jerusalem Mills and Mariner’s Point Park are worth visits on their own right, one as
an 18th century living history museum and home to one of the oldest intact mills in the
state (2813 Jerusalem Rd Kingsville) and the other as a 37.7-acre waterfront park with
paved walking trails, a playground, picnic facilities, and a boat launch (100 Kearney Drive,
Joppa). What makes both of these places even more fun is that both locations host letterboxes.
According to the official letterboxing website, “Letterboxing is an intriguing mix of treasure
hunting, art, navigation, and exploring interesting, scenic, and sometimes remote places.”
Equipped with a small notebook, rubber stamp, and an ink pad, the basic idea is for the
hunter to solve riddles, decipher clues, or follow a map to find a treasurer. The treasure, in this
case, is a waterproof box that contains a logbook and a rubber stamp. The victorious hunter
uses the stamp found in the treasure box to stamp their own personal logbook and then uses
their personal stamp to mark the treasure box logbook. The treasure box is then returned to its
hiding place for the next hunter. Great motivation to get kids out in the woods, letterboxing,
and it’s more hi-tech sister, geocaching, is a fun way to spend the afternoon. Log on to www.

recent on-line posts, that particular letterbox may no longer be maintained.

Anita Leight Estuary Center in Abingdon, Eden Mills in Pylesville, cycling on Aberdeen
Proving Ground, the Ma and Pa Trail, the Lower Susquehanna Greenway, and kayaking on
the Chesapeake Bay or any number of our local rivers and streams. Needless to say there’s a lot
to explore in Harford County, and some great excuses to get out of your car.

Two Back Flats by Jasika Scruggs is all about whimsy, eye candy and never dull moments. She
specializes in custom, handmade mini hats, headpieces and fascinators. Jasika lives to make the
old new again with respect, understanding, appreciation, fresh prospective, foot taps and hand
claps. These custom, handmade mini hats, headpieces and fascinators are for fearless brides, tea
party goers and throwers or anyone who is generally cool.
All of Two Back Flats' hats are built entirely from scratch using at least 50% up-cycled and
vintage supplies. Jasika's pattern is patented and all of her designs are original and registered.

Celebrates 35
Years of Service!
SARC saves lives. Over the past 35 years, SARC has
helped thousands of victims, women and men,
overcome the violence that has affected their lives.
W
hat would you do if your husband intimidated you
psychologically, emotionally and physically? And you had
three kids, ranging from a 3 year old to a sixth grader? How
would you handle the situation?
SARC was founded in July 1978 after a woman was sexually assaulted in
Harford County, and community members realized there were no local
resources available to assist her. Various organizations--People Against
Rape, Harford County Commission for Women, League of Women
Voters and local law enforcement—came together to found SARC,
which stands for Sexual Assault/Spouse Abuse Resource Center.
“The staff of SARC is phenomenal,” said Luisa Caiazzo-Nutter, executive
director. “They have big hearts and work hard to help people so they feel
whole again.”
The SARC staff could not serve as many clients as they do without the
50-60 dedicated volunteers who give many hours of their time for all
kinds of projects. Despite funding cuts on all levels over recent years
(including Sequestration, which has impacted SARC’s budget this year),
SARC has maintained the same level of services to clients thanks to the
dedication of its staff and volunteers.
While volunteers are always needed and welcome, donations of funds are
even more important to help SARC continue the critical work it does
in the community. And there are many ways to help. Make a donation

Rebecca, a working mom from Harford County, faced that scenario
seven years ago. Her husband’s erratic behavior scared her. She was
concerned about her personal safety and the well-being of her children.
Rebecca took an important step forward and called SARC for help.
SARC is a Harford County nonprofit that provides hope and resources
to victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, child abuse and stalking.
It provides all of its services free of charge and always has since its
founding 35 years ago.
One of the services SARC offers is a 24-hour helpline (410-836-8430),
which Rebecca called. The counselor talked to her about safety planning
and the option of removing herself and her children from their home.
Luckily, Rebecca had a safe place to go. If not, she and her children could
have gone to stay in SARC’s 28-bed safehouse.
After moving to a safe location, Rebecca and her children began
counseling through SARC. Rebecca attended six weeks of crisis
intervention that focused on personal safety and the cycle of violence.
Her three children attended weekly or biweekly counseling sessions, each
geared specifically toward the age of the child. The 50-minute sessions
included time for Rebecca to talk to the counselor about issues relevant
to her children.
“SARC is a life-changing organization. They support me as
a mother and give me tools to help my children transfer
what they are learning from counseling and what I’m
learning to create a healthy family,” Rebecca explained.
Every year SARC helps about 2,000 people, and there’s a waiting list
for its services. Among those services are counseling, companion calls, a
shelter, crisis intervention, legal services and community education, all
provided free of charge.
SARC’s biggest fundraiser of the year is the 4th Annual Rising Above It
Hot Air Balloon Family Fun Day on Saturday, September 21, from 11
a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Harford County Equestrian Center, 608 North
Tollgate Road in Bel Air.
This annual family friendly event features a mix of activities for children as
well as adults including live entertainment stages, horse rides for the little
ones on Clydesdales (additional fee), a scavenger hunt, moonbounces,
face painting, games and more. Heckles Hoops, Hoppin Hawks and
Move It with Uncle Pete are just a few of the activities planned for the
day. A variety of vendors will be on site for shopping and dining.
A hot air balloon “hare and hound race,” coordinated by Light Flight,
is scheduled to lift off at 5:30 p.m. (weather permitting). Balloon pilots
are scheduled to be on hand with their balloon baskets at 4 p.m. (again,
weather permitting) to discuss hot air ballooning.
Tickets for Family Fun Day cost $5 per person (children 5 and under are
free) and may be purchased in advance online at www.sarc-maryland.org.
Tickets also will be sold at the gate.
Other ways to support SARC throughout the year include participating
in or sponsoring Walk-A-Mile in Her Shoes in April and attending
or sponsoring the annual bull roast in March. Donations are always
welcome and may be made online at www.sarc-maryland.org or by
sending a check to SARC, P.O. Box 1207, Bel Air, MD 21014.

J
ust a few years ago if you wanted to travel to “Wine
Country” you would have to do a fair amount of
planning in advance. Traveling to “Wine Country”
meant getting on a plane and spending hours in the air,
renting a car, and then actually driving to “Wine Country”.
Now, if you didn’t have extended vacation time you could
opt to get in your car and drive north for a few hours to upstate New York and the Finger Lakes to get your “winery fix”,
or head in the opposite direction south to Virginia and the
Shenandoah Valley for your tour and tasting enjoyment. But
that was pretty much your choices.
The reality today is that every state has wineries to visit and
wine to taste, and most have an organized winery association
to help map your trip. So the question is simply “how much
time do you have?” In our home state of Maryland there
are over 50 wineries scattered throughout the Maryland
landscape. Here, locally in Harford Country, we have 4
wineries right in our back yard, and there are others to
the North in Cecil County, and to the south in Baltimore
County… but today we are going to look at our 4 local
wineries that can be visited when spontaneity kicks in on a
Saturday or Sunday morning and the weather is just right for
a day trip. So pack a picnic basket with all your favorite picnic
type foods, drop the top in the car, and head out to our 4
local wineries… oh, and enjoy yourselves but drink and drive
responsibility! Have fun!

on a 20-acre farm in the lovely, rolling Piedmont Region

Winery and specialize in small production of finely crafted

There’s a story in every bottle... Legends is one of the
newer vineyards in Harford County. In April 2008, over
2,100 vines were planted. Four different varieties of vines
grew: Merlot, Viognier, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay. The
proprietors' love of wine quickly outgrew as a hobby. The
experience Legends Vineyard hopes to provide is that their
wine will enhance your setting. Whether it is sharing a
bottle with friends or pairing it with food - the quality of
the wine is of most importance.
We leave Legends and finish up at Mount Felix
Vineyard and Winery. Here we sit out on the veranda
looking at the Chesapeake Bay while we nibble on our
picnic basket goods as the soft wind blows around us
and we sip our wine. Ah, what a relaxing day!

Pick Your “Purr-Fect” Price
Cat Adoption Program
The Humane Society of Harford County (HSHC)
has introduced a brand new way to adopt a fun-loving
feline... the “Pick Your Purr-Fect Price” cat adoption
program. There’s no catch; no hidden agenda; and
no set adoption fee. HSHC’s intention with this new
program is to unite fabulous felines with new families!
In 2012, HSHC took in over 3,000 cats and kittens
and expects this year to be just as busy. The “Pick
Your Purr-Fect Price” program has proven to be a very
effective method to greatly increase cat adoptions at
numerous shelters across the country.
Taking in a stray cat or kitten from the street is noble;
however, the first visit to the veterinarian can be very
eye-opening, considering all the costs to ensure a happy,
healthy companion animal. At the end of the first year
with a stray cat, vet bills can easily exceed $425.
Instead, plan a visit to the shelter to meet all the
wonderful cats and kittens waiting for homes. Once
you’ve found the perfect one, and before your pick
your purr-fect adoption price, consider these facts: (1)
HSHC is a non-profit organization that is not affiliated
with Harford County Government or the Humane
Society of the United States. HSHC relies on the
support of the community to raise the funds it needs
to continue aiding homeless and neglected animals.
(2) For every cat it shelters, HSHC invests well over
$150 to ready the cat for a permanent home, including
immunizations, treatments, spaying or neutering,
testing, micro-chipping food and care.
If your new best friend isn’t already spayed or neutered,
there is a $50 deposit at the time of adoption that is
refunded to you upon completion of the procedure
within 60 days (or 60 days after the kitten reaches 6
months old).
With all these factors in mind, visit the shelter and
adopt a cat or kitten at the price you tell us!

I
am inspired by everything that surrounds me. To me shopping for
treasured goodies, is all about the hunt to find something hidden.
I spend hours, looking for things to fill my closet! The most
delicious stores to me, are filled to the top like a candy jar! Colors,
textures, and amazing bargains. Here are some of my fashion loves:
My favorite stores and hidden places:
1. Killer Trash located in the heart of Baltimore! Vintage finds,
eclectic pieces from every era your heart can imagine! 1920's,30's,
40's, 50's glam, all the way up to Twiggy inspired fashion of the
60's mod dresses. If that is not enough, vintage jewelry, purses,
hats, scarves and lingerie!!! Men's vintage too!
2. Etsy! A true artist's dream. I find all of my gorgeous Vintage
tulle dresses off of Etsy and Ebay!
3. The house of GW: Also known as Goodwill. I take 3 hours
to search, the SUPER GOODWILL located in Bel air Maryland.
Racks upon racks of vintage finds. All you need is patience, vision,
and time! Many of my fashion looks that I create for photo-shoots
come directly from the House of GW.
4. Super Thrift located in Perry Hall. Now if you think the house
of GW is something to get excited about, multiply that by 100.
5.Ryan's Relics on Belair Rd in Baltimore takes me back into
time! This antique store, has an array of estate finds, vintage
dresses, jewelry, photo-shoot props, and art.
6. My Grandmother The most treasured and sentimental pieces,
are the beautiful vintage pieces my grandmother Arta gave to me.
They are timeless, and fill my heart with love. Everything from
black vintage jet bead necklaces, chiffon dresses, and beautiful
props! My grandmother had the best style. I miss her very much.
9. Last but not least, my mother's closet! My mother taught me
all about fashion, being a hairstylist back in the day and interior
decorator. Her closet was always filled with, candies (shoes) vintage
leather jackets, silk tops, beautiful scarves, ahhhhh the list goes on.
I always leave with beautiful things. Since my mother is a collector
of art deco, I always find props that are useful for our shoots.
My Philosophy on fashion:
Fashion is supposed to be fun, make you happy, and make you
feel special. I believe that I am living in the wrong era, so my look
that I embrace most of the time is pinup, and 40's glam. There
are days I am the flower child, then I have my Disco moments
(many disco moments) and I just want to sparkle! No matter
which fashion flare you possess, remember this, when people stare
you up and down, it is because you stand out, and that is a good
thing! I usually smile back.

On June 21, 2013, Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna welcomed the Crouse
Family home. The home, located at 404 Giles Street, is the first that the
organization has built in Bel Air.
Upper Chesapeake Health Foundation held its 14th Annual Hospice Regatta at the Concord Point Lighthouse in Havre de Grace on June 8. Proceeds raised at this
event support the Senator Bob Hooper House in Forest Hill.

“Balanaisia” (warmth with elegance)
Stepping in from the foyer into the living room you will be drawn by the warmth
and stature of this estates original fireplace. As you look around you will find yourself
enticed to stay for a quiet conversation or to host your
next social gathering with friends and family. Finding
my inspiration for this rooms design started with the
fabric called Balanaisia. This whimsical pattern features
an Asian inspired street procession among lanterns and
shrines with an elephant leading the gala! How fun and
wonderful are the colors and weave of this fabric. As you
peruse my selections of furnishings, fabrics and accessories
you will find the natural progression of my design. Also
as glorious addition in the mix is a majestic peacock that
will bring you further into my vision.
