Early Dismissal
A student may be excused from school earlier than the regular
dismissal time due to urgent reasons. The parent or guardian must
write a note to the building administrator, stating the time and reason
for the request and the student’s destination.
The parent of an elementary or middle school student is responsible
to stop in the school office to confirm the early dismissal at the time
the student leaves the school. Upon arriving at school in the morning,
high school students must present a parental excuse to receive an
early dismissal form. They then must sign out at the office upon
leaving and sign in upon returning the same day.

School Cancellations/Cycle Days
Weapons Policy
Noted on each calendar block are cycle days and a school number
day (i.e. 1/A/7). When school is cancelled due to inclement weather,
etc., the cycle days will continue as reflected on the calendar. For
example, if school was cancelled on a cycle day 1/A, the next regular
school day will be cycle day 2/B. The next snow make-up day will be
the cycle day of the date on which school was cancelled.
The district has a zero tolerance policy. Students, non-students,
employees and other adults are forbidden to knowingly or voluntarily
possess, store in any area subject to one’s control, handle, transport
or use any instrument that is considered a weapon or a “look-alike”
weapon in any school environment.
Attendance
Students who have been absent from school must bring an excuse,
signed by the parent or guardian, and containing the dates of and
reason for absence. Excuses not presented within five days of a
student’s return to school are unlawful.
Doctors’ excuses are not needed after absence for childhood
diseases or common ailments. However, students must remain out
of school for prescribed periods for certain contagious diseases, as
described in student handbooks. Doctors’ excuses may be required
for students who are frequently absent and claim illness as the reason.
Absences are considered excused for the following reasons: illness;
home quarantine; death in the immediate family; impassable roads;
exceptionally urgent reasons. All other absences are unexcused.
Drugs and Alcohol
Discipline
Students must respect rules established by school administrators
and teachers. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action. Minor
infractions may result in a warning or note or phone call to the parent
or guardian. After-school detention may be assigned for repeat
offenses or for more serious infractions. A very serious infraction may
result in suspension.
Searches
Upon reasonable suspicion, students suspected of using, selling
or possessing drugs or contraband will submit to a search in the
presence of a principal or parent. Refusal may result in suspension
or expulsion. Articles used for storage of personal property may also
be searched upon reasonable suspicion that they contain drugs or
contraband.
The use, possession or distribution of any drug or alcohol during
school hours, on school property, on school buses, or at any schoolsponsored event is prohibited. Anyone under the influence of drugs
or alcohol will not be admitted to school or school events. Any student
suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol during
school hours or on school grounds must submit to a breath, blood
or urine test performed by qualified personnel. Refusal may result in
suspension or expulsion.

School Tobacco Policy
What is SAC? The Student Assistance Committee is a team of
people who have been trained through a state-endorsed program
of drug, alcohol and suicide prevention. This committee works in
cooperation with MH/MR D&A (Mental Health, Mental Retardation,
Drugs & Alcohol) agencies to assist students experiencing schoolrelated problems in these areas.
District policy prohibits smoking and the use of tobacco products
by students, employees and other adults in all district buildings, on
school buses and on school property owned by, leased by or under
the control of the school district.
Building administrators may suspend any student from school for
disobedience or misconduct, as outlined in the Pennsylvania School
Code. In-school suspensions and exclusions from school also may be
assigned at the discretion of the building administrators, as outlined in
the School Code.

Student Transportation
Students living in bus riding areas will be assigned to a school bus
and assigned to a seat that they are expected to sit in every day.
All changes for bus riders require a note to be submitted at least
three days before the change is to take place. Such requests must be
submitted by the parent or legal guardian and received by the school
secretary, who may then issue a Student Bus Pass. Bus drivers will
not accept notes or letters.
Students are expected to be at their assigned loading zone five
minutes before the designated loading time. Bus drivers are not
required to wait if students are not at the loading zone at the time
designated on the published bus route schedule.
Changes of loading or unloading zones within the same bus route
may be honored for one day or a set weekly schedule, not on a
whenever basis. (Guidelines for such requests can be found in student
handbooks.)
Students may be assigned one bus in the a.m. and one bus in the
p.m.; however, no student will be assigned multiple buses in either the
a.m. or the p.m.
Principals are responsible for disciplining students for misbehavior
on the school bus. Behavior rules and procedures for handling student
misbehavior on the school bus are described in student handbooks.
The Board of Directors may take any action necessary to provide
safe transportation for students, including temporary suspension or
revocation of bus-riding privileges.
Change of Address
When a change of address for a student occurs within the district’s
boundaries, parents/guardians are required to complete a change of
address form and provide proof of residence to the Central Registration
Office located in the District Office (570-372-2213). Any change of
address affecting transportation will be forwarded to the Transportation
Coordinator. Parents/guardians will be notified once the change in
transportation has been processed and when it will go into effect.
School Visitors
Parents are encouraged to visit Selinsgrove Area schools at
any time. To make the visit more beneficial or to schedule a
conference with a teacher, parents are asked to telephone the school
administrator in advance. Parents are reminded to report to the office

when visiting the school.
High school and middle school students are not permitted to bring
visitors to school. Elementary students are permitted to bring visitors
only under special circumstances, and only if arrangements have
been made in advance with the building administrator.
All visitors are required to have a valid photo ID and must register in
the main office where a visitor’s badge will be issued. The badge must
be displayed at all times while visiting the building.
Lunch Program
Selinsgrove Area School District participates in the National School
Breakfast and Lunch Program. Breakfast and lunch prices for the
2016-17 school year are:

LUNCH:
Elementary School: $2.30 • Intermediate School: $2.30

Student Medication
Students taking prescription medication during school hours
must bring to the school nurse a medication approval/request form
completed by the physician and signed by the parent or guardian.
Prescription medications must be brought to school in the original
pharmaceutical container, registered with the school nurse and remain
in the nurse’s office.
Students taking non-prescription medications must bring a
note, signed by the parent or guardian, indicating the name of the
medication, why it must be taken during school hours and the exact
times it should be administered. Non-prescription medications must be
brought to the school nurse in the original container.

asbestos and how it is being handled in the district.
Educational Trips
(NOT SCHOOL-SPONSORED)
A student may be excused from school attendance to participate
in a trip or tour when the trip is considered by school officials to be
educational and the student is to be supervised by an acceptable
adult.
The parent or guardian must submit a Request For Excused
Absence From School For A Preplanned Educational Tour or Trip
Form to the respective building office at least 10 school days before
the trip. This form is available at the office of each school.
Extracurricular Activities
Students may choose to participate in a variety of extracurricular
activities. However, a student who does not comply with the code of
conduct may be denied participation in extracurricular activities, and a
student on suspension is not eligible.
Also, a student must be in attendance the entire school day to
be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities. Only a doctor’s
excuse or other urgent circumstances will be considered by the
principal in waiving this requirement.

This notice is to inform you that the Selinsgrove Area School District
is continuing to manage asbestos-containing materials as per the
AHERA regulations. The management plan is on file and available
for review at the District Office as well as in the main office of each

PUBLIC AWARENESS NOTICE
In compliance with state and federal law, the Selinsgrove
Area School District conducts ongoing activities as part of its
school program to identify students who may need special
education and related services. If a child is identified by the
district as possibly in need of such services, the parents will be
notified of applicable procedures.
If a parent believes that his or her school-age child may
need special education services and related programs,
or young child (age three to school-age) may need early
intervention, screening and evaluation processes to assess
the child’s needs and ability are available at no cost, upon
written request. Requests for evaluation and screening may be
made in writing at any time, whether or not the child is in the
district’s public school program, to Dr. Lisa Conrad, Director of
Special Education, Selinsgrove Area School District, 401 North

information on the rights of parents and children, provision of
services, evaluation and screening, parents may contact Dr.
