Letter from Board President
Dear Members of the Temple Family,
This past year has been remarkable in many ways. There are two major milestones in particular
that I will call to your attention. First, however, it is fitting that I thank you both as Board
President and as a fellow congregant for all that you do each day to make this congregation a true
kehilla kedosha, a family of families.
We continue to grow in membership and in program offerings. We continue to successfully reach
out beyond our synagogue’s walls into the community in many ways. We balance tradition with
innovation to meet the needs of our congregation and the larger community. We take seriously our
responsibility to nurture Temple so that it is strong and vibrant for us, for our children and for their
children.
It is with duty in mind that we completed and published our Strategic Long Range Plan this year,
designed to achieve the bold vision that Rabbi Weiner outlined during our High Holy Days services.
The six pillars or categories of the plan (worship, education, congregation engagement, social action,
finance, real estate) clearly spell out the areas in which we will be devoting our time and resources
over the coming years.
The Strategic Long Range Plan is one of the milestones. The other, which was just recently
completed, was the selling of our interest in the Mayflower Hotel property. In the congregational
email that I recently sent out the details of the transaction and the background of our interest in
the property were laid out. The essential point is that we will have a stronger financial base in the
future. This will allow us to move toward making the longer term program and facility investments
that are essential for Temple. It will also allow us the build the capital reserve and endowment base
that every well-run non-profit organization needs to have to sustain their future.
Taken together, these accomplishments mean that we have both a roadmap for where we want to go
and what we want to be as well as the financial base on which to build for the future.
This is my last letter as President. Next year, Don Loeb will take the chair and I am confident that
with his leadership we will continue to thrive.
This is neither a valedictory essay nor a comprehensive reflection of all that we have achieved
together over the past two years. I do want to thank my fellow Board members, Rabbi Weiner
and all the rabbis, the administration and staff on both campuses and all who work every day for
Temple. I’m grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to serve and I look forward to all that we will be
doing for the next decade and beyond.

Last Year at Temple
We are honored to have our efforts
recognized by the Union for Reform
Judaism Commission on Social
Action. This past year, we won
a 2015 Religious Action Center
Irving J. Fain Award for our
recent Campaign for Gun
Responsibility. Through education,
advocacy, and fundraising,
Temple supported passage of
Initiative 594 for universal
background checks, a milestone
accomplishment in Washington
State.
We supported many
meaningful Tikkun Olam
opportunities to help
our neighbors and
community.
We provided
countless life cycle
events for Temple
members and their
loved ones.

We greeted more than 2,000 people at our High
Holy Days service.
We offered an amazing range of lifelong learning &
enrichment opportunities…
…as well as over 40 programs, events and social
opportunities that span the generations.
It’s all part of our individual and collective investment in the
future of Reform Judaism.
We thank you for all that you do to make this 116 year old
congregation truly a family of families, a kehilla kedosha – a
caring and sacred community.
