A New Wine Destination
S
CHRISSY GOLDBERG
onoma and Napa: both
words are synonymous with
California wine country and
both Northern California
destinations draw millions of visitors
every year. But a new wine destination
has bloomed right here in the Santa
Clara Valley and Central Coast, where
wineries take advantage of a perfect
climate to produce award-winning
wines in beautiful vineyard settings.
Santa Clara Valley remains one of
California’s distinctive winegrowing
regions with a set of features ideal for
high quality wine. It is also home to
some of the oldest Zinfandel vineyards
8
in the United States.
On the southern end of Out
& About country are the wineries
of San Benito County. With cooling
breezes and fog rolling in over the hills
from the Pacific Ocean, the climate
is perfect for growing certain wine
grapes.
With another year comes fresh
opportunities to join the harvest
celebrations at festivals, wine dinners,
concerts, winery tours, tastings and
other events. Many of the vineyards
offer other products, like olive oil
and dried fruits, and are the perfect
settings for picnics, weddings and

occasional musical concerts
At every vineyard you explore, no
matter what time of year, at least one
step in an annually recurring series of
events can be witnessed. The name for
this process of grape production—this
science of grapes—is “viticulture.”
American viticultural areas, or
AVAs, are grape-growing regions
recognized as distinctive and
historically significant. Santa Clara
Valley is its own AVA.
The Santa Clara Valley AVA
stretches from the foothills of the
Santa Cruz Mountains near Saratoga
through Gilroy and Morgan Hill
to the northern part of San Benito
County. Protected from the Pacific
Ocean by the Santa Cruz Mountains
on the west, it’s also separated from
the San Joaquin Valley by the Diablo
Mountain Range to the east.
Grapes here are nurtured by specific
amounts of frost, fog, rainfall, wind,
elevation and soil. Mediterraneanlike climates with cool sea breezes
and early morning fog extend the
growing season. Clay and sandstone
limit water intake, stressing the vines
and resulting in lower grape yields but
arguably excellent results.
There’s more than just Zinfandel.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay,
Merlot and Sangiovese are common
here, too. You’ll also find locally grown
Pinot Noir. The wide variety of fruit
wines here range from pomegranate to
marionberry. It’s even possible to find
coffee and chocolate infused wine. And
kinds of grapes, called “varietals,”
together.
Finally, comes a finishing process.
Egg whites, gelatin and sulfites might
make appearances here to stabilize
flavors.
of course, Gilroy gives you the chance
to try garlic wine.
For more information about the
wineries, check out their websites. Or
better yet, take a wine-tasting tour
through Santa Clara and San Benito
counties.
WINE 101
Harvest in California can extend
from late August through November.
After harvest, grapes are de-stemmed
and crushed. Grape skins give red
wine its color, flavor and tannins.
Fermentation begins when yeast is
added to the crushed grape juice,
which is usually stored in oak or
stainless steel barrels. Fermentation
lasts up to three weeks. After that, red
wines are aged in the barrels for up
to two years. White wine may be aged
for as little as one week. At this point,
winemakers sometimes blend different
WINE: ECONOMY &
ENVIRONMENT
The Wine Institute tries to create
conditions favorable to the wine
industry by advocating for wineries at
the state, national and international
level. They also worked with their
nearly 2,000 members to develop the
California Sustainable Winegrowing
Program in 2002.
California is now “a world leader in
sustainable winegrowing,” according to
Gladys Horiuchi of the Wine Institute.
That’s a huge accomplishment,
Horiuchi says, considering California is
the fourth largest producer of wine in

the world.
The United States ranks below
France, Spain and Italy in wine
production, and 90 percent of
American wine comes from right here
in California.
Besides bragging rights, the
wine industry creates hundreds of
thousands of jobs and contributes over
$60 billion a year to the California
economy.
Wines have been grown in
California for over 200 years, and
many wineries are multi-generational
family owned businesses. This often
means they care about long-term,
responsible agricultural and social
practices. Wineries also often work
with government to preserve open
space and wildlife habitats through
agreements that stay with the land
even after it’s sold to new owners. THE WINERIES
Though all the fun comes in
deciding which varietals and vintages
you like most, many wineries in Santa
Clara and San Benito counties have

won Gold and Double Gold tasting
awards from prestigious panels of
judges…usually with good reason. Along with excellent wines, many
wineries offer picnic grounds, gift
shops and outdoor concerts. Others

host tours, special festivals, bottleyour-own events and wine dinners.
Several are available for picture-perfect
private parties, corporate events
and weddings. You can often meet

the winemakers themselves in their
beautiful tasting rooms.
If you can’t decide when to go,
the Wineries of Santa Clara Valley
offers special passport weekends each
spring and fall. Activities exclusively
for passport holders include barrel
tastings and barbecues plus special
discounts and new releases.
The new Santa Clara Valley Wine
Trail is a 28-mile loop marked with
over 70 directional signs to help
your designated driver get from one
vineyard to the next. Santa Clara
County and the cities of Gilroy and
Morgan Hill each contributed to this
effort, and maps are available at some
wineries and online.
Before visiting a winery, it’s always
a good idea to check the winery’s
website or call in advance. Some have
limited hours, require reservations or
schedule special events.

help plan your own personal wine
tours, simply turn the page.

CAMPBELL
The former Campbell High School auditorium is now the Campbell Heritage Theatre, a venue for concerts, plays and musicals.
Where Present Meets Past
VALERIE L. VALDEZ
O
nce home to fruit packing
companies and fruit drying centers in the late 19th
and early 20th centuries,
Campbell—dubbed the Orchard City—
is now a bustling and vibrant area dotted with modern and historic homes
and buildings, boutiques, shopping
centers, restaurants and outdoor recreation areas.
Not far from the Pacific coast,
Campbell is set in the beautiful hills
20
of the South Bay bordered by San
Jose to the north and east, Los Gatos
to the south and a piece of Saratoga
to the west. With all the necessities
and fun of modern life neatly tucked
inside a well-groomed historical past,
the Orchard City has come a long way
from its agricultural roots. Visitors
won’t be disappointed.
For those who love the beauty
of architectural history, downtown
Campbell is dotted with many iconic

buildings dating back to early 20th
century. Centered in the historical
birthplace of the city, remnants of the
past are visible on every block.
The former Campbell High School
auditorium is now the Campbell
Heritage Theatre, a venue for concerts,
comedy shows, musicals, plays and
dance performances. Built in the 1930s
and renovated in 2004, the theater
boasts 800 seats and a state-of-the-art
sound and lighting system.

Campbell Historical Museum is
housed in the former firehouse and
displays historical artifacts and other
aspects of Campbell’s past. Across the
street from the museum, a premiere
example of the English Tudor Revival
style popular in the South Bay area is
open to the public. The historic Ainsley
House was built in 1925 as a home
for Campbell’s canning pioneer John
Colpitts Ainsley.
The home originally sat in the southwest corner of an 83-acre orchard but
was moved to its present downtown
spot in 1990 after Ainsley descendants
donated it to the city.
Campbell is also home to the
Pruneyard Shopping Center, a sprawling 250,000-square-foot open-air retail
complex featuring three office towers
built in 1970 and a movie theater built
in 1964 and renovated in 1994.
Outdoor enthusiasts can take their
pick from Campbell’s assortment of
parks ranging from big to petite. The
city’s largest park is the 32-acre JD
Morgan Park, home of the CampbellMoreland Pony/Colt Baseball League,
two softball fields, a soccer bowl and
multiple sports areas for tennis, volley-

ball and horseshoes. The park is also
a major access point to the Los Gatos
Creek Trail. Edith Morley Park is located adjacent to the percolation ponds
and showcases the best in Mother
Nature. It houses a community garden
and plenty of wildflowers with a stunning marsh and wetland area for scientific exploration.
Designed specifically with young
children in mind, Jack Fischer Park
contains a variety of play equipment,
including an interactive water feature,
a “bee hive” hill with walking path and
large open play fields.
The Orchard City Green is located
in front of Ainsley House and provides
a passive park area that hosts summer
musical concerts on Thursday evenings
from June to August.
The tiniest park in Campbell is
the 1.3-acre Stojanovich Family Park
featuring plaza areas, pedestrian walkways, landscaping, child play areas,
interpretive signs and public art.
For those looking for some “heat” in
Campbell, Boogie on the Avenue is a
two-day “partee” held downtown every
May. More than 30,000 people flood
downtown Campbell to enjoy music,
delicious food, wine and more than
200 arts and crafts vendors while mixing and mingling with neighbors and
friends.
In the fall, Campbell hosts a popular Oktoberfest celebration featuring
authentic German foods, beers, an
impressive entertainment line-up and
the artwork of more than 100 fine artisans from all over the country.
And year round, Downtown
Campbell plays host to a farmer’s market on Sundays and First Friday and
Second Saturday events every month
featuring live music, art walks, extended shopping hours and special sales,
and unique dining experiences.

All Things Garlic
he Gilroy Garlic Festival, held every year on the last
full weekend of July, is summer’s ultimate food fair.
Since 1979, the three-day festival has welcomed
guests from around the world to enjoy great garlicky food,
live entertainment, arts and crafts, cooking competitions and
all-around family fun, all while raising millions of dollars to
benefit the local community. The 2016 Gilroy Garlic Festival
will be held July 29, 30 and 31.
The heart of the Gilroy Garlic Festival is Gourmet Alley.
In this gigantic outdoor kitchen, the Pyro Chefs put on a
spectacular flame-up show while preparing garlic-laced
calamari and scampi in huge iron skillets. Meanwhile,
hundreds of volunteers prepare other “Alley” favorites
like pepper steak sandwiches, pasta con pesto, stuffed
mushrooms, fried calamari
and sausage sandwiches,
along with plenty of garlic
fries and garlic bread.
There are also many
other food booths located
throughout the festival
grounds, offering garlic in
everything from alligatoron-a-stick and Cajun crawdads to kettle corn and garlic
watermelon. There are also beer gardens and a wine tent
where you can sample award-winning wines from local
vineyards.
And of course, anyone who comes to the Gilroy Garlic
Festival must try a free sample of the infamous, only-inGilroy garlic ice cream.
In addition to all the excellent food, Gilroy Garlic Festival
visitors enjoy the sounds of live rock ‘n roll, country, jazz,
blues, reggae, swing and more on three entertainment
stages. There are also cooking demonstrations and contests
going on all three days, including the Great Garlic CookOff (one of the country’s most prestigious amateur cooking
contests) and the Iron Chef-style Garlic Showdown.
The arts and crafts areas showcase a colorful variety of
unique, high-quality, handmade creations from over 100
artists. Kids of all ages enjoy lots of fun rides, games and
hands-on activities in the children’s area.

os Gatos, Spanish for “the cats,”
is an amazing place to visit for
a day or a weekend or to stay
forever. Folks just adore its
natural charm, unique architecture
and quaint downtown. Nestled in a
cozy corner of San Jose in the foothills
of the scenic Santa Cruz Mountains,
Los Gatos has something for everyone,
from shopping, gourmet and casual
dining and plenty of outdoor activities
and events year round.
The pristine beauty of the city’s six

parks and the popular Los Gatos Creek
Trail are impossible to resist. The
lovely 10-mile trail can be accessed
from Vasona County Park, Oak
Meadow Park and downtown. With
great fishing spots, Vasona Lake is
open for non-power boating all year
round.
For bikers and runners in the area,
multiple races wind through town
and into the rugged terrain. These
races draw thousands of competitors
for the Resolution Run in January,

The Los Gatos Wine Walk combines
two favorite pastimes—drinking

downtown, tasting food samples at
local shops and restaurants and then

Just as cats love to lounge, Los Gatos
offers ample opportunities for people
to relax, too, as they enjoy free outdoor
concerts in the summer. Music lovers
can’t get enough of Jazz on the Plazz.
Presented by Los Gatos Music & Arts, the
free concerts entertain finger-snapping
patrons at Plaza Park on Wednesday
evenings from July through September.
The musical selections feature modern
jazz and classic tunes performed by big
name artists.
More free music is heard with the
Music in the Park series. These extremely
popular concerts are held on lazy Sunday
afternoons on the Civic Center lawn with
performances of various musical styles.
In June, the Silicon Valley Jewish Music
Festival is held at the Addison-Penzak
Jewish Community Center.
Los Gatos loves to show off its allAmerican pride by celebrating the Fourth
of July with an old-fashioned, familyfriendly party. The town gets decked out
in red, white and blue and holds a town
picnic with games, food and a traditional
band concert on the high school lawn.
Also in July, the Bard comes to town
for the Los Gatos Shakespeare Festival at
Oak Meadow Park.
An absolute must-see and do is the
Fiesta de Artes hosted by the Kiwanis
Club in August. A Los Gatos tradition
for more than 30 years, the city’s biggest
event attracts about 20,000 people and
more than 150 craftsmen, vendors and

care your pet needs. If you feel your
pet may need emergency treatment,
do not hesitate to call or go into the
emergency hospital immediately. If
possible, it is best to call ahead so
that a team member can advise you
on your particular emergency. Some
common emergencies include pets
who are hit by cars or ingest snail
bait or other toxic substances, such as
chocolate.
SVVS is also available for urgent
care when the condition is not lifethreatening. If you feel your pet needs
to be seen before you are able to get
an appointment, the veterinarians will
accommodate you. When you arrive,
receptionists will be able to give an
estimate of how long you may have to
wait in order to be seen.

retro and just plain cool area
brimming with top-notch
wineries, beautiful hiking
trails, gourmet and casual-dining
restaurants, the iconic Mission San
Juan Bautista, plus lots more. But
the jewel in the county’s crown is
Pinnacles National Park. The remains
of an ancient volcanic field, the park’s
beautiful spires tell a tale of a different
time. The park offers over 30 miles

of trails that wind along cliffs and
steeples and through canyons and
meadows creating a dreamland for
nature lovers.
Visitors can taste wines and spirits
produced in the area on the San Benito
County Wine Trail that winds through
the rolling hillsides. In spring 2015,
the Wine Review Council toured San
Benito County wineries for the first
time and gave them all big thumbs
ups.

main attraction, Bolado Park. Bolado hosts guests all
year with special events like the Northern California
Bluegrass Festival in August, the San Benito County
Fair and the San Benito Olive Festival in October. In
June, crowds flock to the park for the Hollister Air
Show and the Saddle Horse Show & Rodeo.
Avid golfers can enjoy a round at any of three golf
courses, San Juan Oaks, Ridgemark and Bolado.
Hollister Hills offers recreation for motorcyclists,
four-wheelers, picnickers and campers in the Gabilan

New Idria was established to support the mercury

ission Gallery in the charming historic city of San

original prints by living artists from all over the

striking California landscape etchings, there are handmade
works for anyone’s budget and taste. In spite of such a
comprehensive collection, gallery owners Boykin Sellers and
Piper Jaramillo strive to create a comfortable, educational
gallery experience.
On any given day, they can be seen demonstrating
techniques of intaglio printing or pointing out the
complexity of carving and mixing colors to create traditional
woodblock prints.
In addition to their collection of works on paper, Mission
Gallery also shows a large and varied selection of handmade
American crafts along with some carefully selected imports.
“We look back over the last 16 years and are so thankful
that we’ve been able to do something we love for a living
– the gallery has evolved into something unique featuring
etchings, engravings and other types of original prints,” says
Piper Jaramillo. Husband and co-owner Boykin Sellers adds,
“We have a couple of exceptionally talented oil painters,
Dave Sellers and Doug Hunt, and have just added some
wonderful pastels by
Judith Rothchild –
supporting our artists
is important to us – we
love to introduce our
customers to them
through receptions and
demonstrations.” In
their continuing effort
to connect artists with collectors, Piper and Boykin will be
hosting several artist receptions and printing demonstrations
throughout the year. For information on these and other
events in San Juan Bautista, visit their calendar page at
