The year five and six production of The Lion King was a sell out. For the first
time all four performances were sold out before the season started.
Feedback from those who attended suggested those attending were not
disappointed. As those who attended will attest to, the production was the
culmination of so many people working together towards a common goal,
namely to provide all year five and six students and all those who attended with
memorable experiences. Thanks to our 270 year five and six students who all
contributed in one form or another. The result of their collaboration was there for
all to see.
Thank you to the large numbers of teachers, parents and supporters who did so
much to help us. So many people contributed in so many ways across many
domains. Thank you. Publicity, art/backdrop, make-up, props, costumes, extras,
backstage, lighting/sound, choreography, music and acting all came together to
form a wonderful whole as evidenced by the performances over four nights.
I could go on and on but you would probably have stopped reading by then!
Suffice to say to all involved: Thank you, thank you.

Mapathon Incentive
If we get to $20,000 from the Mapathon to go towards the upgrade and
extension of the hall the principal has agreed to be, for one day, one of the
characters children select from the Lion King.
This means you could see at the bus bay, around the school and on the
crossing afternoon Rafiki or Mufasa or Simba, Nala, Scar............................in
full make up and costume!
All children will be able to vote if the $20,000 target is reached

Thanks for the Books!
The response from our community for our request for books was hugely
positive. It was so good we have been able to send books to the school in
Thailand as well as to Vanuatu. Not only was the quantity of books great but the
all-important quality of books was also worthy of note. As a result, we are
sending books in really good condition, with many of them being new.
Thanks also to Scholastic Books as they donated a generous amount of brand
new stock: Not self but service.
While the books destined for Vanuatu
are already on their way as a result of a
shipping arrangement involving a third
party, we are yet to identify how we are
going to get the four boxes of books to
the school in Thailand. If anybody has
any links in the international freight
business and you could help us out

RUNNING CLUB:
The running club is for any students in year 4 to year 6 who would like to work on and improve their endurance running.
Come along and train for the year 4 cross country or the inter school cross country or simply run to improve your fitness
for your other sports. Please meet outside room 10 at 8:05am for a 8:10am start. Please wear suitable sports shoes.
Tuesday Morning: Meet Mr Padgett at 8:05am outside room 10.
Wednesday Lunch Time: Keep an eye on the daily morning news to see if the lunch time run is going ahead. Weather
dependent.

TOUCH RUGBY:
Touch rugby is offered to all students in year 0 to year 6 and is played on Thursday afternoons at Sunnynook Park in
Term 4. Information letters with all the details have been sent home today with those kids who are interested in playing.
Please note that online registrations close this Friday and late registrations will not be taken.
If you do not receive a letter today, you can get a copy from Mrs Maunder in her new room opposite room 7, ask your

SPRING NETBALL AND SUMMER HOCKEY:
Registration letters for Spring Netball and Summer Hockey, which are played in term 4, will be coming home towards the
end of this week. Keep at an eye out for them.

Due to the preparations for the next new entrants room opening soon in room 8, Keri Maunder is now located in the old
reading resource room at the bottom of the stairs in the corridor for room 7 to room 9.

Gymnastics
Mrs Brown will be selecting teams this week to go to the North Harbour Competition in November.
Children must read the daysheet with their teacher so that they come on the correct day.
Year 5/6 girls will be next week. Selection is based on gymnastics ability and commitment to practicing during a lunchtime
each week, until 2nd November.
If children are sick and miss their day, they can come to Room 26 and see Mrs Brown when they return to school.

Dear Parents/Caregivers of Year Five and Six Students
This will be the last letter you will receive about The Lion King Junior - I promise!
On the final night of the production we do not have a thank you speech at the
conclusion of the performance. This is for a number of reasons: We want younger
members of the audience and the students in the production to get home as soon
as possible; the speech, if made by me, would suffer in comparison to the
performance of the previous hour and 20 minutes; and the speech would be confined to the audience on the night, rather
than to everybody who has attended over the four nights - well over 1,000 people. Hence, the following is to everybody
who either attended a performance or has been associated with the production in any way shape or form.
Kushukuru Shukura
Thank you really doesn’t encompass the sentiments I wish to express regarding the support provided when
producing The Lion King Junior. Therefore, I have used a Swahili translation of ‘thank you.’ Although not as well-known
as the Swahili hakuna matata (no worries) kushukuru and shukura very much embody the spirit of what I write today.
Many people have commented to me about the quality of the production and have marvelled at how ‘the whole show was
put together.’ I have marvelled too! I can assure you it hasn’t happened by accident. Rather, the performances over the
last four nights have been the result of so many people working with purpose, skill and energy towards a common goal,
namely to provide the very best theatrical experience for every one of the 270 year five and six students and to those in
the audience.
While the script and musical score provided an outstanding basis to start our planning, everything would have remained
in print form had it not been for members of the Campbells Bay School staff and community who came together with the
aforementioned purpose, skill and energy to lift the potential of the script and the score from the page and onto the stage
with such vibrancy and professionalism. While it is dangerous to name names (in case I leave somebody out!) very public
credit must go to: Megan Simpson (extras), Olivia Byrne (advertising/publicity), Caitlin Richardson (costumes), Fred Nu’u
(props), art/backdrop (Nathan Janes), Rob Padgett (backstage, lighting/sound), Nicole Rowland/Sarah Whitaker
(choreography), Victoria Fuller (make-up), Sharon Knight (music) and Gabrielle Cunniffe (directing) for working so
collaboratively, not only amongst themselves and with year five and six students but with so many supporters of the
school. Here I refer to the army of parents and other members of the CBS staff who so selflessly contributed to the show
and this is where I will not name names as there are simply too many to mention, but you do know who you are! Thank
you - inadequate but heartfelt.
Our year five and six students performed above expectation and I do not confine my comments here to the very obvious
talent so evident every night on stage. Without the highly supportive chorus, the backstage team who worked (mostly) in
the background, the orchestra and so many others the show simply could not have gone on in the form it did.
Collaboration while striving for excellence really were hallmarks of year five and six students involved in the show. Thank
you.
We stage a show every two years for a number of reasons. Some of them are obvious such as implementing the
curriculum in terms of performance art and providing an abundance of opportunities for students to shine. No less
important are the opportunities to give students a ‘taste’ of being involved in such a production with the possibility it might
spark an interest that could lead to further involvement in the performing arts or, simply, to provide a happy memory of
involvement in the years to come.
With the hall now reverting to its former self and as we turn to the next part of the term I am hopeful happy memories of
this production will linger in the context it happened because so many people worked together with unstinting skills and
energy to make something magical happen.
