Members of Council and I are pleased you have chosen our Town as your home. We believe that East Gwillimbury
offers the best of everything with a great rural atmosphere in which to raise a family, convenient geographic location, a
tranquil scenic landscape, and a thriving business community to meet your shopping needs.
East Gwillimbury consists of a number of communities including Holland Landing, Queensville, Mount Albert, River
Drive Park and Sharon. Early settlement of the area dates back to the late seventeen hundreds. Many attractive
buildings have been preserved, enhancing the historic ambiance of East Gwillimbury.
As you settle into your new home, we anticipate you will find the information in this booklet useful and encourage you

The Municipal Council is comprised of the Mayor and four Councillors elected at large, with the Mayor also
representing the Town at the regional level of government.
The Municipal Council’s responsibilities include:

 Ensuring the provision of a variety of services to meet the needs of residents

ABOUT OUR TOWN
The Town of East Gwillimbury is located in the northern part of
York Region, encompassing an area of 238 square kilometers
(91.89 square miles), with a
population of 23,000 people.
It is a balanced community
with the assets of both an
urban and rural area. East
Gwillimbury boasts a variety
of living environments including fully serviced urban
areas, partially-serviced suburban areas, rural hamlets,
estate residential subdivisions and rural agricultural land.
The Town consists of a number of urban areas and villages including Holland Landing, Queensville, Mount Albert, River
Drive Park, and Sharon. These areas are separated from each
other by farms, forests, countryside residences and recreational
areas which all add to the overall character of the Town. The
rich history of the Town, its ideal geographic location and excellent balance of both urban and rural communities, makes

ANIMAL CONTROL
Animal control services include dog tags, animal enforcement
and animal adoption/pound. A private contractor provides these
services for East Gwillimbury. If you have concerns regarding a
neighbour’s pet (ie. excessive barking, running at large, etc) or
need other animal-related services please call 1-800-898-8606.

ARENA ACTIVITIES
The East Gwillimbury Sports complex located in Sharon is active with programs for residents. The complex boasts two ice
surfaces offering ice time year round for adult and youth
hockey, figure skating, recreational skating, as well as floor
time for ball hockey, lacrosse, and a variety of special events
year round. Inquiries concerning ice time should be directed

1235. The East Gwillimbury Sports Complex is located at

FIRE BURNING PERMITS
The Town requires anyone having an open-air fire to obtain a
fire permit. A fire permit costs $25.00 for a calendar year
(subject to change) regardless of the number of fires you
have. Fire permits are available at the Emergency
Services Department, Holland Landing Fire Station, 19314
Yonge Street, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00
p.m. Payment can be made by debit card, cash or cheque made
payable to the Town of East Gwillimbury. Please call
905-853-8842 for more information. Please note that fires in
chimineas or other outdoor fireplaces are classified as open air
fires and require permits.
FOOD BANK
The Mount Albert Food Pantry is open the last Wednesday of
every month from 2 to 6 pm. They are located at the Mount
Albert United Church at 41 Alice Street. To contact the Mount
Albert Food Pantry call 905-473-2562.
GARBAGE, GREEN BIN AND RECYCLING
In an effort to encourage waste diversion, blue boxes and green
bins are collected every week. For missed collection call
1-866-421-5625.
Blue Box Recycling
Blue boxes are collected weekly and must be placed at the curb
no later than 7 a.m. on the day of collection. A blue box will not
be emptied if it contains broken glass or any other contaminants. There is no need to separate the materials in your blue
box. See your collection calendar for more details.
Green Bin
Green bins are collected every week along with the blue boxes.
Either line the bin with a certified compostable bag/Kraft paper
or use smaller certified compostable bags and then tie and place
them in the bin without a liner. Green bins must be placed at
the curb no later than 7 a.m. on collection day.
Garbage Day
Household garbage, including furniture (such as sofas, beds and
tables– no metal), is collected once every 2 weeks. There is a
current bag limit of 2 bags every 2 weeks and a weight limit of
22 kg (50 lb) per item. Waste must be placed at the curb no
later than 7 a.m. on the day of collection.
Hazardous Waste
Do not put hazardous materials in the garbage, down the drain,
or on the ground. Take them to one of York Region’s Household Hazardous Waste Depots listed on page 3 of your waste

Yard Waste
Leaves, shrubs, branches, weeds, and garden waste are collected from April to the end of November, except on holidays.
(Please refer to the Waste & Recycling Calendar for pick-up

The library offers a wide variety of informational and recreational materials to meet the needs of the community. The collection includes over 55,000 items in various formats, including
books, magazines, newspapers, government documents, videos

Rules and Regulations
Parks and other natural areas are special places. Help us to keep
our parks beautiful by abiding by a few basic rules:
1. Motorized vehicles are to be used only in designated
parking areas. Motorcycles, ATVs, trucks, cars, snowmobiles, etc. are not to be in parks or municipal open
space areas.
2. Stoop and Scoop after your pet.
3. Do not litter.
4. Plants, trees, and other vegetation are important to any
park, please do not disturb them.

The Town of East Gwillimbury taxes are payable in four installments each year. Interim tax bills are issued in January with

We offer many new and interesting programs for all ages and
seasons. Please take some time to browse through the programs

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation has announced that the
extension of Highway 404 to Ravenshoe Road will be complete
by January 2013. Currently the highway ends at Green Lane.
