Message From the Superintendent
So how do you give a sonogram to a fully awake, fully active, 300-pound Sloth Bear?
Sounds like the beginning of a joke. It is no joke to the staff at the Idaho Falls Zoo at
Tautphaus Park, where challenges like this are just another day at the office. A few
days ago I watched Dr. Rhonda perform this delicate medical procedure to discover whether the Sloth Bear is pregnant (she likely is not). I would have assumed it was impossible but with the assistance of Vet Tech Alison, and keepers
Dallas and Erika, not only was the procedure successfully performed, it was a safe pleasant experience for the bear and for the
zoo staff. I was amazed!
The ingenuity of the zoo staff, the care they have for the welfare of
the animals, and the passion with which they approach their jobs is
nothing short of inspiring. I have been working as the superintendent
of the Idaho Falls Zoo at Tautphaus Park for just over a month
and I am already amazed at what the staff accomplishes: Everything from broken pipes to dental procedures on a DeBrazza’s Monkey, shipping a snow leopard to a zoo in
Canada to hosting a birthday party. And they did all this while managing the busiest zoo opening in history—
we had over 2,200 visitors in one day!
I am very proud to be a part of such a wonderful organization staffed by such hard working people. You
should all be very proud of the Idaho Falls Zoo as well. They are making a difference for the animals in their
care and the health of wildlife populations during a critical time for the world’s biodiversity while providing
the citizens of Idaho Falls a wonderful educational, recreational, and economic asset. That is something to be
proud of indeed!
I am honored to be a part of such an amazing organization.

We need your help to keep our membership and admission

Please remember…
Present your membership card along with an additional form
of picture identification upon EACH visit to the zoo. If you
do not present your membership card, you must pay a $5 replacement card fee to gain admission.

As a general rule your membership card
does not
cover any admission fee for fundraising events that are held at
our zoo, such as, but not limited to Chillin’ at the Zoo with
Reed’s Dairy, Wines in the Wild, Zoo Brews, and Boo at the
Zoo, but it will gain you admission to the Membership Picnic

EdZOOcation Offers YOU Lots of “NEW” This Summer
The staff of the Education department at Idaho Falls Zoo is really excited to bring you several new programs this
year. In fact, there are so many new possibilities we are calling it the “summer of something-for-everyone!” In addition to lots of new topics in our One Day Classes, Weeklong Zoo Schools, monthly Zoo Tots classes, and Behind the
Scenes tours, we are pleased to offer YOU lots of NEW! For a complete listing of the EdZOOcation programs, visit
http://tinyurl.com/7vy3woc.
For Adults: Exercise Classes
From June through August, find your Zen during Yoga at the Zoo, kick it up a notch with Zumba at the Zoo, or feel
the beat with Wild About POUND. Each class is 45-minutes long and open to those 14 and over. Cost is only $5.00
per class for TPZS members and $10 per class for nonmembers (includes zoo admission). Looking for something for
your little ones to do while you exercise with us? We’ve got that covered, too! For only $5.00 per child per session
(does not include zoo admission), drop the kids (ages 2-10, must be potty-trained) off with a zoo educator to have
some fun while you work out! Learn more and sign up at http://tinyurl.com/zdpg2ul
Teachers’ Professional Development/Adult Classes
Why should kids have all the fun at the zoo? We are offering two classes this summer just to teach adults how cool
the zoo can be and to show teachers all the fun things you can do to use information about the zoo, its animals, and
conservation principles to the classroom. Cost is $65 for TPZS members and $75 for nonmembers, per class. Professional Development credits are available for each class through Northwest Nazarene University for $60 per credit.
You don’t have to be a teacher to take one of these classes. They are open to everyone 18 and over. Visit http://
tinyurl.com/ol9842y for more information and registration.
For Families: Family Classes
Make your zoo visit even more educational and memorable by participating in a class designed for the whole family.
The classes will be held in conjunction with select special events at the zoo this summer. Classes are only $30 for up
to 5 people (nonmembers must also pay zoo admission) and $10 for each additional person. Visit http://
tinyurl.com/jkar692 for information and registration.
Behind the Scenes Tours
While our Behind the Scenes Tours aren’t new, they are nonetheless an exciting activity for families.
Take a hour-and-one-half look behind the gates and doors at Idaho Falls Zoo
and see what it takes to care for, feed, and manage 400 exotic animals.
Cost is $25 per person for TPZS members and $30 each for nonmembers. Visit http://tinyurl.com/jkqdfxw for information and registration.
Special Events:
Once again we’ll have special activities going on for Earth Day, International Migratory Bird Day, Bear Aware Day, Enrichment Day and
more but we’re also excited to be offering new events including Endangered Species Day, World Oceans Day, and Carnivore Craze Day. Most
of these events are included with zoo admission, which means you, the
TPZS members, get to enjoy the fun for free as part of your membership!
For a complete list of zoo special events, visit http://tinyurl.com/zdtth9a.
As you can see, we have tried to offer something for everyone this summer.
Try one of our new programs out, we think you’ll enjoy it. See you at the zoo!

Zookeeper Spotlight
Name: Dallas LaDucer
Age: 33
Idaho Falls Zoo Keeper Duties: I work mostly with the large animals like the animals in Asia and African
mammals.
How long have you worked as a zookeeper? 14 years
What other zoos have you worked at? Northwest Trek in Eatonville, Washington, Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, WA, and various other animal breeding facilities.
What is your education background? I have double Bachelor’s degrees in Evolutionary Biology and
Animal Behavior.
What is your favorite animal that you have
worked with? WOLVERINES!!
What is the weirdest/funniest thing that one of
your animals has done? At a different zoo, we had
the due date wrong for our lion. She gave birth on
exhibit and hid the cubs in the bushes. She successfully hid them without the zookeepers knowing for a
couple days.
Which animal’s scat is the worst to clean up?
Definitely, Otters.
Any animals you would like to work with in the
future? I’d like to work with wolverines again. Also, Takin and Polar bears.
Any advice for someone that wants to be a zookeeper? Get a lot of experience at a lot of different facilities.
Right: Takin, which are also
called cattle chamois or gnu
goats, are found in the eastern
Himalayas. The takin is the national animal of Bhutan! Below: Wolverines are native to
the northern latitudes of
Europe, Asia, and North America.
Above: An otter. Did you
know wolverines are in the
same family as otters? Even
though wolverines look like
bears, they are actually the
largest members of the weasel family.
You can help our zoo grow and improve!
The Tautphaus Park Zoological Society established a fund at the ICF in January 2014 to raise the funds needed
to construct a new entry and education building at the zoo. The entry will feature an education center and a larger gift shop as well as expanded entry site. The funds will be invested and managed by the ICF, so your contribution will grow over the next several years. Gifts are tax deductible; you will receive a paper receipt from
ICF. Please print the information below:
