Message
PRESIDENTS’’:
Hopefully all of you are staying warm and dry and enjoying the winter months! The JHS PTSA has been hard at
work readying plans for our winter and spring events, as well as preparing for the 2013-2014 school year. Our
staff appreciation committee, volunteer coordinator, e-mail administrator, and senior scholarship committee
will be especially busy in the next few months. The Wolf Tracks team will also be hard at work keeping us all up
to date as we get closer to graduation and the end of the school year.
March is sure to be a busy month! Our students will be busy charting their courses for next fall, and incoming
freshmen will get a chance to meet with JHS staff and counselors as the evolution from middle school to high
school begins. The good news for incoming freshmen is that they will be joining an incredible group of students
putting forth hard work and dedication to be successful not only in their academics but also in the many extracurricular activities that Jackson has to offer. We look forward to welcoming the students and their families to
our school community!
March is also the month when we ask for your help to recognize outstanding volunteers,
educators, and advocates. Nomination forms for annual PTSA awards—Golden Acorn
(outstanding volunteer), Outstanding Educator, or Outstanding Advocate—are included
in this newsletter and also will be posted on our PTSA website, http://www.jhsptsa.org.
On Wednesday, March 6, the PTSA will be meeting at the Jackson High School Library at 7 p.m. Our agenda
will include a presentation about class schedules from Assistant Principal Kevin Rohrich and a report from the
Compassionate Schools Committee. We invite all of you to attend this meeting to learn about the PTSA spring
activities and find ways to get in on the fun!

Principal ’s MESSAGE’:
Dear Parents & Students,
With spring around the corner, it is time to begin thinking about courses for next
year, unbelievable as it may seem! The purpose of this letter is to share important
and relevant scheduling information with you for the 2013-2014 school year.
Jackson counselors began visiting classrooms February 25 regarding pre-registration
for next school year. A complete list of pre-registration lesson dates can be found at
the end of this letter.
You and your student play a key role in the registration and master schedule process.
Please take time to acquaint yourself with our course offerings, as this will provide the basis for important decisions you and your student will make together. When planning your course selections, consideration should be
given to
graduation requirements and post-high school goals
class workload and student response to challenges
outside commitments
student ability and learning goals
As a brief review, the number of students who select a particular course, graduation requirements, teacher availability, and budget constraints determine courses that run next year. Because of those constraints and scheduling
on a yearlong basis, we ask students to select alternates to provide the greatest possible options for receiving a
full schedule. Therefore, the choices you make are CRITICAL.
When you select a course you signal not only your interest but also your commitment to complete that course.
Often students and parents believe we are making arbitrary decisions on courses. Instead, we are trying to juggle
a nearly impossible number of factors in order to produce a master schedule that optimizes students’ educational
goals in the framework of our budgeting and staffing realities. Although students readily talk with each other
about classes and instruction and can serve as sources of good information (from a student perspective, at least),
we strongly encourage students to talk with their teachers about correct placement in next year’s classes. Staffing
adjustments will depend on the courses that students select, and with budgets still tight, the ability to change
schedules after the course selection process will not happen. Therefore, decisions must be made thoughtfully.
Thank you for taking an interest in your student’s academic life and sharing them with us.

Superintendent ’s MESSAGE’:
Dear Everett Public Schools families,
As I visit with students, families, and staff in the district, many ask what to expect from
this legislative session and what the Supreme Court’s McCleary decision might mean for
schools.
We all have similar questions. We know that the court said K-12 schools must be fully funded, establishing 2018
as the deadline for that funding. We don’t know how, when, or if the legislature will respond. We ARE following
the Legislature very closely to be ready for whatever happens. AND we are responding to legislators’ requests for
information about how their actions might impact our students.
Recently I received a document from the Network for Excellence in Washington Schools—a group of organizations and school districts advocating for constitutionally-mandated funding for Washington’s K-12 schools. It is
the most clearly written explanation I’ve seen of the McCleary decision, and I share with you a piece of the challenging puzzle our legislators face in making school funding decisions.
What is the McCleary decision?
In January 2012, Washington’s State Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Washington is violating the
constitutional rights of children by failing to live up to its “paramount duty” to amply fund education of
all K-12 students. The Court ordered the Legislature to make steady, real, and measurable progress each
year and to fully fund K-12 public education by 2018.
What does the case mean for students and communities?
The Court ruled that our constitution requires the state to provide ample funding for K-12 education—
and that means “considerably more than just adequate,” according to the Court—and to fund our K-12
public schools first, before the state funds any other program or operation. The Court said school funding must be ample enough to ensure that all students are given a realistic and effective opportunity to
meet the high learning standards established by the state.
How do we know what “full funding” means?
During the McCleary trial, the state assured the Court that the 2009 education reform and funding law,
ESHB 2261, is the promise that K-12 public education will be fully funded by 2018. (However, public
school funding has actually decreased since 2009.)
The Court added the power of its orders to ensure that “the promise” becomes reality. And, the Supreme Court retained jurisdiction over the case after it issued its ruling, stating, “What we have learned
from experience is that this Court cannot stand on the sidelines and hope the state meets its constitutional mandate to amply fund education.”
The Court ordered the state to demonstrate and report on its progress every year.

Superintendent ’s MESSAGE’:
How is the State doing so far?
The state issued its first report in December 2012. In response, the Supreme Court said the state is failing
to show progress, noting that “the overall level of funding remains below the levels that have been declared constitutionally inadequate.” The Court also reaffirmed that “year 2018 remains a firm deadline
for full constitutional compliance,” adding that “we cannot wait until ‘graduation’ in 2018” for the state
to begin to make progress toward meeting its constitutional paramount duty.”
What has to happen now?
On December 20, 2012, the Court told the Legislature, “The report submitted at the conclusion of the
2013 legislative session must set out the state’s plan in sufficient detail to allow progress to be measured
according to periodic benchmarks between now and 2018 … the phase-in plan should address all areas of
K-12 education identified in ESHB 2261, including transportation, materials, supplies, other operating
costs, full-time kindergarten, and class size reduction. Given the scale of the task at hand, 2018 is only a
moment away—and by the time the 2013 Legislature convenes, a full year will have passed since the
Court issued its opinion in this case.”
This mix of court-ordered actions and the looming deadline of 2018 is a challenge for legislators who have told
our school board—and our Associated Student Body representatives who met with them—that legislative decisions are better informed when legislators hear from their constituents.
The district’s homepage includes links to legislators who welcome your questions and suggestions. The Network
for Excellence in Washington Schools’ website includes more state school funding information and an invitation
to sign up for their e-newsletter. You can also sign up for the district’s e-newsletter InTouch for general district
news and legislative news as it is available.
On a musical note, I saw many families and students at the February 13 performance of the U.S. Navy Band in
Everett High School’s Civic Auditorium. More than a thousand took the opportunity to see these premier musicians and our students perform. Please join with me in a thank you to the Navy for selecting Everett as one of
just 18 venues for the group’s 2013 national tour. A special thank you goes to the Navy musicians who spent an
entire morning with band students in our high schools—inspiring students to excel in all they do, to keep music
alive for all of us, and reminding us what duty, honor, and commitment to excellence means in America.
Warm wishes,
Gary Cohn, Superintendent

Sweetheart
Soiree
It was a sweet night for a soiree. The Jackson High Band Boosters
held a Sweetheart Soiree at The Spotted Cow on February 7, a
wonderful event to showcase our talented band students and
provide a fundraising silent auction for students to offset their
festival travel expenses, all while bringing our JHS band families
together in a fun and relaxing atmosphere. The soulful music,
drinks, and decadent desserts, and Stephanie Sharpe’s adorable
photo booth, made for a great mix of things to do at the Soiree.

“The Jackson Way”
Way
Recently, Jackson High School received the following message
from a proud parent who experienced The Jackson Way firsthand:
It was December 24th, Christmas Eve. I was finally going to do
some holiday baking. After all, I’ve had the recipes and
ingredients for more than a week yet lacked only the time. As I
assembled the ingredients, my heart sank with the realization
that I didn’t have one of the key ingredients—white chocolate
chips! Groan. Now I’d have to run to the store on one of the
busiest shopping days of the year to get just one item. I
thought about sending my husband or my daughter to buck
the crowds for me, but this was my undoing, not theirs, and
besides it was the day before Christmas and they deserved a
relaxing day, too.
So I hauled over to my fave “go-to” store for one stop
shopping, Fred Meyer in Mill Creek, to pick up the white
chocolate chips and a few other things I might need, you know,
just in case. The parking lot was packed like sardines in a can. I
circled the lot a couple times and found a parking space further
from the door than I’ve ever parked before. Like the sardine
can parking lot, the same was true for shopping in the store.
Ditto for the checkout line.
As I exchanged my credit card swipe for a long sales receipt,
my mood took a drastic turn for the better! Greeting me was a
pleasant young man sporting a Jackson wrestling team
sweatshirt offering to assist me to my car with my loaded
shopping cart. At first I thought he was a Fred Meyer employee
because of the way he approached me with such professional
and friendly courtesy, but on our walk to the car we struck up a
conversation about the Jackson wrestling team and I learned
that he and his teammates were volunteering their time and
cheer to assist the community holiday shoppers. Wow! How
terrific is that? The walk to my car parked in the far corner of
the lot was not parked too far at all, but only a short walk
when I had the company of such a pleasant and helpful young
Jackson wrestler.
Thank you, Jackson wrestling team! You know what it means
to live The Jackson Way—with Pride,
Excellence, and Character.
And the rest of my day? I baked to my
heart’s—and sweet tooth’s—content.

JHS MUSICIANS
On February 9, many of our Jackson High School musicians competed in regional Solo & Ensemble contests. Students
who participated performed either as soloists or part of a small group (2–10 members) on a piece of music they selected and prepared independently. They were adjudicated by professional musicians based on criteria developed by
the Washington Music Educators Association that aligns with multiple National Standards for Music Education. Rankings of I (superior) to V (below average) were given for each performance.
Following is a summary of the band students’ outcomes at the regional competition:
 There were 86 Jackson band student entries
 44 earned superior (I) ratings
 40 earned excellent (II) ratings
 27 qualified entries for State (* indicates a student qualified for State in more than one
category)
Daniel Wilson*, Catie Case, Alex Carro, Joonha Shin, Kristin Anderson, Katie Kavanagh*,
Nicole Moffat*, Michael Henning, Brandon Mar*, Zach Feingold*, Danny Kavanagh*,
Rachel Cho, Graydon Gunthardt, Eunice Chu, Ji-Yoon Chon, James Henderson, Chris Richey,
Jeran Plumacher, Blake Bell, Sean Hoon
The state music competition will be in April and will be hosted at Central Washington University
in Ellensburg.
JHS Jazz Band News
On February 23, the three Jackson High School jazz bands participated in the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho. Performances by all three jazz bands, Disfunkshun jazz combo, Take Seven jazz
combo, and bass soloist Erika Middleton-Sharpe were evaluated by professional jazz artists and clinicians. Rubrics that
address national music standards were used to provide feedback for the performances. Each of our groups consistently scored in the outstanding category for the majority of the classifications of the rubrics.
Several of our students were recognized as “Young Artist Solo Award” winners. They are Brandon Mar, drums; James
Henderson, alto sax; Sean Hoon, tenor sax; and Michael Henning, piano. In addition, the Disfunkshun jazz combo,
consisting of Michael Henning, Brandon Mar, King Dawidalle, and Shadi Mattar, was invited to perform in the Kibbie
Dome at the evening “winners' concert.” They performed a piece called “Skyline,” which was written by Jackson High
School senior and pianist Michael Henning. This combo will be performing at the Everett Public Schools Foundation
Breakfast on March 21. Additionally, these students were recognized as “Outstanding Young Artist Honorable Mention”: Shadi Mattar, piano; James Henderson, tenor sax; Brandon Mar, drums; and Erika Middleton-Sharpe, bass.
Lesley Moffat is Director of Bands, Jazz, and Percussion at Jackson High School. She conducts Jazz Band 1 and coaches
the jazz combos. Kevin Hall is Music Program Assistant and conducts Jazz Band 2. Student-teacher Chelsey Caldwell
conducts Jazz Band 3.
On Monday, March 25, all three of the Jackson High School jazz bands will be performing at Dimitrious’ Jazz Alley.
Reservations can be made at www.jazzalley.com or by calling 206-441-9729.

TUTORS NEEDED
JHS offers a small mentor program for students handpicked by their eighth grade counselor. These students have
been identified as those who would benefit from extra support as they enter high school. Among this group
there is a need for math help. They would greatly benefit from individual tutoring or a session with very few students.
We need a couple math tutors for Algebra, Geometry, and Alg 2 Trig who can sit down and help students struggling in math at least once a week after school. The day of the week is flexible, but we need someone from
2:15–3 p.m. If you know of anyone interested, please contact Elizabeth Garrett at [email protected] or
425-385-7049.
We also have a need for reading tutors to read and discuss books with students who have low reading skills. The
commitment level would be for one hour once or twice a week, 7:30 –9:30 a.m. and noon–2 p.m. If you know of
anyone interested, please contact Michaelle Frank at [email protected].
All tutors are required to complete a volunteer application, which can be done online via a link on the Jackson
High School or Everett Public Schools Web site.

Class of 2014 Fundraiser...Spelling Bee!
Hello, Class of 2014 parents!
March is coming fast and there is a huge class fundraiser coming up! I’m the Class of
2014 Activities Coordinator, and I’m in charge of asking for parent volunteers. The
event is a spelling bee for elementary students—the class held this for the first time
last year and it was a success! It will be at JHS on Saturday, March 23. The spelling
bee itself starts at 9 a.m. and we hope to end around noon. However, we will need
parent volunteers to help set up beforehand and do some other jobs such as the
following:

8 a.m., Set-up: Will need parents to help decorate the commons and set up tables
for registration.

8:30 a.m., Registration: Will need parents to help sign in and register kids when
they show up with their parents.

9 a.m.–approx. noon, Spelling Bee: Will need parents to be in classrooms as
judges (giving contestants the words, etc.).
We will not need parent volunteers to clean up; however, if you want to, you can!
We will need most volunteers to show up at 8–8:30 a.m. Please mark your calendars
and contact the numbers/e-mails listed below if you are interested in volunteering for
this fun class fundraiser! All proceeds go to the Class of 2014!
Thank you,
Chanelle Swem, Class of 2014 Activities Coordinator, [email protected]
Kelly Dietsch, Class of 2014 Advisor, (425)385-7083 or [email protected]
