SCIMITAR December 2010/January 2011
all of John’s efforts and wishes become realities. All
the time he dedicated planning for a successful
2010 Shrine Year, the visions he held . . . John,
I hope we did your efforts justice. I hope you are
happy with our accomplishments we’ve had this
year, and that we lived up to your expectations. You
will never be forgotten.
Nobles and Ladies . . . I hope you have enjoyed
the past two months’ activities we’ve held: the
Bazaar, Turkey Trot, Appreciation Dinner,
Children’s Halloween Party, and that you will
enjoy the holiday events planned for December:
the All-Units Christmas Party, the Children’s
Christmas Party, and so many more. Please
check the calendars on pages 12 and 13 and
the respective ads in the Current Events section
for details.
Nobles, Ladies, and Friends
of the Rhode Island Shrine,
“Wow!” cannot explain the feeling I have in realizing that this is my final message as Potentate. It
seems that time goes by at such a rapid pace that
by the time we realize what is happening, it’s actually over.
Illustrious Francesco DiMascio
But, enough of the sentimental views. I would
like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the help and support
you have given this past year in making it a success. My first “thank
you” goes out to all the Nobles for electing me to this esteemed position, to my Officers for their support and help. To my Aides –
Domenic Di Stefano and Tom Holton – your help, your undertakings,
your dedication, your time and effort that you have given me and the
Shrine this year is overwhelming. I thank you both from the bottom
of my heart! You are what Masonry, Shrinedom, and camaraderie is
all about. To the rest of the aides this year, thank you for the many
hours of dedication you have given to make our events successful.
To all the Ladies, most especially to Lady Jeanne Mello, for the countless hours dedicated into making the Ladies’ programs and bazaar
successful. Oftentimes your efforts seem like they go unnoticed; but,
in reality, they are most appreciated. It proves to all of us, more especially to me, about how the Shrine is a big family. We ARE a family
. . . always helping each other for the cause . . . whether it be for
raising money or making an event successful. At times there are
indifferences. We have those in all families . . . sibling rivalries,
different views and opinions. But the bottom line is: We do what is
right to help our cause, our Fraternity.
As we prepare for a new Shrine Year, I hope that
each and every one of you gives the new Potentate the same support
that was given me. Rhode Island Shriners are moving forward in
many aspects. I hope they all continue, and that “Shriners” becomes
a household name here in Rhode Island.
In closing, I would like say thank you for allowing me the
opportunity to serve as Potentate, as representative to John Mello.
I am so proud to be a member of the Rhode Island Shriners, to be a
member of this Fraternal family. I offer my services and dedication to
the future of the Shrine.
We wish David Nelson a speedy recovery so that we may have you
among us very soon.
“May everyone have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!”
God Bless!
John . . . I hope I have made you proud!
IMAGINE 2010!
Frank “Sparkey “DiMascio
Potentate/CEO 2010
Lastly, I would like to thank all the Nobles and Ladies for their
continued support in all our undertakings, for the good times that
were shared, for the events that were held, for all the well-wishes
and prayers.
This year was not like all years. On October 19, 2009, we lost our
Chief Rabban . . . a man, a Noble who was to be Potentate in just
eleven weeks . . . John Mello . . . a person whom I considered a dear
friend, a Brother, a confidant. I, along with the Divan, tried to make

Dear Fellow Shriners and Ladies . . .
We want to thank everyone for all the love and support that we have
received. It is a very long and amazing journey. David got sick in April
2010 and hopes to return to work in April 2011. God continues to send His
love and support through all of you. All the cards, encouragement, and
calls are extremely uplifting. We are eternally grateful for all your help.
God bless all of you.

Another year has come and
gone here at the home of the
Rhode Island Shriners, and we
have many great and some sad
memories of 2010. Some of our
great stories to remember are
those of the many children we
have taken under our wing to
provide them with the very best
of medical care at our Shriners
Hospitals for Children worldwide.

During the year, we have witnessed the loss of many Shriners
and extended family and friends of
Rhode Island Shriners fraternal
family. May they all rest in peace.
Our Illustrious Potentate Frank
DiMascio has done a great job this
year serving in his second term as
Potentate. It was only a short year
ago that we loss our dear Brother,
friend and Shriner Noble John
“Jack” Mello who was ready to
serve as our Potentate for 2010.
Frank was elected to take the position of Potentate and fulfill the
dreams and plans that John so
meticulously prepared. With Lady
Jeanne Mello at his side, we could
only IMAGINE the fun and camaraderie that we all could share.
In light of the BIG shoes that
Frank had to fill, I believe that he
has done a wonderful job, and
that John Mello would be mighty
proud indeed!

This year we set out to reach as
many facets of the media so that
our Rhode Island citizens would
always know that the Shriners are
working hard to improve the quality of life for children and young
adults in every community whenever possible. If you were keeping
up with the Public Relations
Chairman this year, then you may
have read, seen, or heard about
the Rhode Island Shriners through
many local newspapers, radio and
television interviews, visits to
local schools, churches and many
other organizations . . . all to spread
word of the great deeds that we
as Shriners perform each and
every year.
How about BIG thank you’s to
our Rhode Island Shriners members, the Legion of Honor, Oriental
and Brass Band, Clowns, Artisans,
Temple Guard, Motor Corps,
Director's Staff, Hillbilly Clan, Past
Potentates and Divan Officers for
the great dedication of volunteered time they continue to offer
with the many successful indoor
and outdoor events and parades
that keep us in the constant eye of
the public . . . another great public
relations opportunity.
Our heartfelt thanks to the
Ladies of our Shriners who continue to bring that special touch to
our Shrine Center with yard sale
events, the great Pumpkin Patch
Bazaar and the many other ways
they show their support to help
make us shine. Thank you, Ladies.
We depend on your help!
We really do have much to be
thankful for and 2010 was a great
year to experience and treasure
the memories of what it truly
means to be a Shriner. “Thank
you” and “I'm sorry” are the key
phrases to our success.
We strive to attract new members into our home of the Rhode
Island Shriners, and we offer the
extended and fun-loving experience with the first step of being
Brother Masons. All members of
the Grand Lodge of Masons for the
State of Rhode Island and their
Blue Lodge Fraternity should take
the opportunity of becoming a
Shriner so that they can enjoy the
fun and camaraderie that we all
share as Brothers while being part
of a greater experience to help
bring joy and support to children
and families here in Rhode Island
and around the world. I can't think
of a better reason to join the
Shriners. Don't wait any longer.
Call the Shriners and get your
application into the works. You
don't know what you're missing!
This issue of the Scimitar will
close the book for 2010 and begin
the new year of 2011. There are
many great stories and articles to
read and share. Check out all of
the current and upcoming events
along with our four-month calendar spread for keeping up-to-date
with meetings and social events.
There is so much to do, and fun
and friendship is waiting for you.
Now sit back, relax and enjoy
all of the great stories, articles and
information that we've made available to you at your fingertips.
Have a happy, healthy and safe
holiday season with a great New
Year to come.
Fraternally and
sincerely yours,

Assistant Rabban’s Message
As I agreed on moving ahead, I
also realized that Jan and I would
be joining a new group of counterparts and leaving the ones we had
grown so close to since we met at
the first seminar in Tampa as
Oriental Guides. Furthermore, we
now had six months to make plans
instead of the year-and-a-half we
thought we had.
Andrew Hencler
Assistant Rabban. RI Shriners
Dear Nobles, Ladies, and Friends,
As the saying goes, ”You never
know what life has in store for
you.” The year 2010 has been one
of unexpected opportunities, happiness and joy, sadness and grief,
and life-changing events.
In late June, our Chief Rabban,
David Nelson, came to me and
asked me if I would be willing to
step up, and, if elected, become
Potentate in 2011. Due to the
untimely diagnosis of leukemia
and on the advice of his doctors
he would not be able to serve as
Potentate in 2011. I told David I
would . . . somewhat sad considering the circumstances, and very
concerned for both a friend and a
Brother's health.

September held happiness and
sadness. We had the joy of seeing
our son get married and two days
later coping with the loss of Jan's
beloved mother. On November
3rd, I suffered a stroke, but thankfully, through the grace of God and
with the love and support of my
wife and three children, I recovered completely with just a slight
speech problem to work on. I
thank all of you for your prayers
and concern, and your calls and
visits. It meant more than you'll
ever know.
Now I look forward to the
opportunity, if elected, to serve
the Nobles of Rhode Island Shrine
as Potentate in 2011. I want to
thank Illustrious Past Potentate
Joseph Wilkenson for appointing
me, and I hope to be worthy of the
faith he has placed in me. Also, I
would be remiss if I did not mention the late Past Potentate,
Kenneth Kershaw who was not
only a dear friend and a Brother,
but also a mentor to me. I also
hold dear the memories of a great
man, Jack Mello, who would have
made Rhode Island proud had he
served as our Potentate. His smile
and warm personality will always
be remembered.
I look forward to next year. I'm
sure there will be a few obstacles
along the way, and issues that
need to be addressed, but with
your help and support, I'm confident we can accomplish great
things.
Yours in Faith,

the Ladies on a very successful
event. The bazaar continues to be
the major fundraiser for the Rhode
Island Shriners. Maybe we should
consult with the Ladies on how to
run a successful fundraiser.
The Old – congratulations to outgoing Chief Glenn Medieros on a
job well done and most especially
to Lady Kerrie. Good luck as you
advance in the Divan.
Columbus Day Parade – I understand Walt Phaneuf had a great
time as the lone Artisan walker. No
doubt Walt marched to his own
beat.
The New – congratulations to Lou
Sherman on being elected Chief of
the most prestigious unit. Good
luck . . . and keep on smiling.
Pinky and Buttercup – say it ain't
so, that you shared a queen-size
bed!
December Artisan Meeting – this is
just a reminder to all of you who
have 'CRS' that our meeting will be
on the third Thursday, December
the 16th. As always, the bar will
host the special collation in celebration of the holiday season.
All Units (should be All Shriners)
Holiday Party – this gala event will
be held on Friday, December the
17th. As always, all Artisan Ladies
will receive a gift from the best unit
in the Rhode Island Shriners.
Holiday Races – Santa, Rudolph,
Old Mr. T, Mr. Blue, Frosty and the
Jinglin' Christmas Tree are well
rested and ready to race the night
of the Holiday Party.
Children’s Holiday Party – in my
opinion, this is one of the best
events held by the Rhode Island
Shriners. This year the event will
be held on Sunday, December 5th.
All kids, young and old, have a
great time. Our own Santa and the
Shrine Clowns do a great job!
Dave Nelson – we are all very
thankful and happy the medical
procedure was a huge success. We
look forward to Dave being our
Potentate in 2012. Please keep
Dave and Lady Donna in your
prayers.
YOU can save a life.
A little of your time
is a lifetime to someone in need.
Give the “Gift of Life”.
Donate Blood Today.
Lost Luggage – a cub reporter,
whose name will remain anonymous, informed me that Mike
Smith found his luggage in the
driveway where he left it the night
before on his arrival in Florida.
Correct Pronunciation – based on
his voice mail, his name is pronounced Riiicharddd Degggnannn.
YOU are so vain, vain, vain!
About the Temperature – why
does our air conditioning / heating
unit provide hot air in the summer
and cold air in the winter? We do
pay our rent bill!
Game Dinner – our annual event is
scheduled for Sunday, January
16th. Glenn Medeiros and Bob
O'Brien need all of you to volunteer your services. Details will be
presented at the December unit
meeting. Glenn continues to travel
the highways in the Northeast in
search of road kill delicacies to
tickle your taste buds and satisfy
your appetite.
The Floor – thank you to the Chief,
Don Maymon, Biff Gallager, Bob
St. Jean on stripping and waxing
the unit room floor. I even helped
out a little.
“Shove it!” – now you know why
our state gets no respect.
New Year’s Resolution – the one
you never make is the one you will
always live up to.
Proof Reader – now we know who
proofreads the Scimitar. Based on
his comment in the last issue of the
Scimitar regarding one of my tidbits, the infamous proofreader is
the Editor-in-Chief. Keep up the
good work!

Shriners Come to the Aid of Isabella
by Noble Wayne Edward Sutton, Rhode Island Shriners Public Relations Chairman
On October 23, 2010, the Rhode Island Shriners Public Relations
Chairman along with Stumbles and Fuzzy (Shriner clowns) were
invited by the folks at Family Fitness Zone and the Coventry Police
Department to help educate the local community about who the
Shriners are and what we do to help children.
received their acceptance letter from the Shriners guaranteeing
assistance with Isabella's treatment. Since Isabella has been accepted (April, 2010) as a Shriners’ patient, the Calise family has not
received a single medical bill.
The Calise family, especially
Isabella, was so moved by the
support of the Shriners that
they wanted to bring more
awareness to both the availability of help provided by the
Shriners, and to also bring
more attention to “juvenile
rheumatoid athritis.” Already
members of the Family Fitness
Zone in Coventry, the Calise
family teamed up with the folks
from Family Fitness and the
Coventry Police to have the
Rhode Island Shriners speak
about the great services they
provide to help children in
need.
Isabella is pictured at left with her mother, Michelle Calise. At right, she shared a photo-op with Stumbles!
Not long ago, I received a phone call from Mrs. Michelle Calise
who's seven year-old daughter Isabella is being treated by the
Shriners Hospital for Children for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis for
which she was diagnosed in December of 2009. Michelle and her husband Kris spent many years prior to her diagnosis visiting doctors
and trying to determine what was actually wrong with Isabella after
witnessing various symptoms with swollen ankles at the age of four
and many other aches and pains throughout her body. There were
many days when Isabella could barely get out of bed.
What made Isabella's affliction more difficult was that her family
was faced with the question of how to cope with paying for her
treatment. At one of Isabella's outpatient therapy appointments, a
miracle happened.
The receptionist at the outpatient care facility was Gina Russo.
Gina Russo is a Station Fire victim survivor and a former patient at
the Shriners Hospital for Burn Victims. Gina asked Isabella's mom if
she ever considered calling the Shriners for assistance. Michelle
Calise did not know who the Shriners were and how they could
help Isabella. Gina's recommendation was truly the miracle that
the Calise family was praying for.
Michelle and Kris did their research about the Shriners and found
that Isabella's condition fell right into the category of eligible assistance. They filled out the application, and just a few weeks later they

The Family Fitness Zone opened its doors to members and nonmembers for a Zumba Class along with the Coventry Police doing
various demonstrations in- and outside of the facility. The public relations chairman (Shriner Wayne Sutton) was on hand along with
Shriner clowns Stumbles and Fuzzy to help educate the community
about the great work being done by the Shriners.
In our undying effort to bring valuable tools and information to
our Rhode Island children and families, the Rhode Island Shriners
offer our warm and kind thanks to the folks at the Family Fitness
Zone and the Coventry Police for allowing us this unique opportunity and we send our best wishes to Isabella, hoping that with time and
care, she will feel better. And special thanks to all of the friends from
the Town of Coventry and surrounding communities for their kind
support to directly help the Rhode Island Shriners.

Here goes . . . my last article as

Nobles, we have many obstacles to overcome if we are to
remain a strong force in the Rhode
Island Masonic community. Our
membership, like that of the Blue
Lodges is less than one-third of
what it was in the early to mid
1960s. If we are to survive that
trend must be reversed. A reduction in membership results in a
direct reduction in income and
Nobles to participate in the various Units with many having to go
dark because of lack of members.
Freemasonry is showing an
increased interest in membership
with many Lodges working a number of candidates. For us to benefit from that interest and pool of
potential candidates, our members must introduce those new
Masons to the Shrine and show
them the benefits of being a
member.
To say that the holding the
office of Recorder has been interesting would be true and an
understatement. As I look back at

my term I am glad I took the position although there were times
when I would ask myself, “What
are you doing?” or “Why are you
doing this to yourself?” I hope that
in my ten years as your Recorder
you consider that I have contributed something of value to the

It

been
a challenging position with the

numerous
changes in how the office functions within itself as well as
how it interfaces with the
Treasurer's office and the bar/

believe that the results have been
a more efficient operation with
good accountability, efficient
record-keeping and to a great
extent an elimination of duplicity
of work. This has led to good
working conditions, camaraderie
and mutual respect amongst the
staff. This could not have been
accomplished without the cooperation of the staff, and I thank
them for that.
When I leave office on January

Nobles, there are many underlying issues that need to be
addressed both in the near and far
future if the Rhode Island Shrine is
going to live up to its potential.
The appointment and election
of qualified persons to run our
organization is extremely important if we are to survive.
Remember . . . whether we like it
or not, the operation of the
Temple is a million dollar business that shouldn't be taken lightly. Elect the right persons to lead,
and I believe we will do OK.

A SHRINER’S PATIENT STORY
Elmore Family is Not Defined by Brittle Bone
Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder characterized
by bones that break easily. For a person with this condition, something as ordinary as a bump on a crowded bus or a stumble in a shopping mall can lead to a broken arm, leg, or worse. The severity of the
disease can vary greatly from person to person, even within the same
family.
Their treatment plan consists of visits at least twice a year to receive
pamidronate, which is dispensed over a three-day period by slow
intravenous infusion, a process that takes several hours. During that
time, they also receive a full physical evaluation, address any problems or concerns, and receive physical therapy and occupational
therapy.
The Elmore family of Richmond, VA, has experienced this aspect
of the disease firsthand. Peter and Angela Elmore welcomed their
first child - a son they named Hudson - to the world in July 1996. The
couple was then living in Atlanta, where the Summer Olympics were
set to begin in two weeks. They were particularly excited about the
games because Peter was selected to carry the Olympic torch at the
tail-end of a 15,000-mile relay from Los Angeles to Atlanta.
Before her first infusion at seven months old, Emily was unable to
sit up because her spine was so soft. Within two months, not only
was she sitting up on her own, she was crawling. She did not fracture
another bone until she was 3 1/2 years old.
The medication was also a great benefit to Hudson; he had no fractures for nearly three years. “That was nice because at that age kids
are so high impact. Even so, there wasn't a day I wasn't on edge thinking, 'Oh, my gosh, did they break something; did they fall?' It was a
daily occurrence,” she said.
The day of the run, Angela discovered her newborn son had somehow fractured his femur. While most mothers would be asking
why, she immediately knew the cause: her son had inherited OI
from his father. Two years later, their second child was diagnosed
even earlier than the first.
Though all tests indicated their daughter was spared the disease,
her right femur was already broken when she was given to Angela in
the delivery room.
Eventually, the Elmore family began going to Shriners Hospitals
for Children® - Tampa, which is closer to their home. Though medication and intervention from the medical professionals at Shriners
Hospitals for Children® help minimize injury, for those with this condition, it cannot be avoided completely. For example, Emily has
broken her femur several times throughout the years, and Hudson
broke his back a couple years ago after bouncing on a hammock.
“In the spectrum of things, I would say Hudson is least involved in
my family,” Angela said. “My husband is the next and Emily has had
the most fractures between the three of them.” Emily broke four
bones by the time she was seven months old; it took her brother four
years to break that many. Her severe case prompted her parents to
investigate preventative measures, in addition to treating the fractures. Angela did extensive online research to find the best care available for her children, which is how she learned about Shriners
Hospitals for Children®.
Despite the challenges and risks, Hudson and Emily have never let
their condition stop them from participating in sports. Emily was a
cheerleader for several years, and both swim for a nationally recognized swim team in Richmond.
Researchers at their hospital in Montreal pioneered the use of a
medication called pamidronate for OI patients. The drug has been
shown to improve bone mineral density and make bones less likely
to fracture. “Pamidronate is from a class of drugs used to treat people with osteoporosis and certain types of cancer,” said Angela, who
is a physical therapist. “These drugs have also been used to help
astronauts regain bone mass after returning from space.”
The siblings have many different interests, but their ultimate goal
is the same: to have fun and be as active as possible.
When Emily was seven months old and Hudson was two years old,
they became patients at Shriners Hospitals for Children® Canada.
Beyond their sports-related activities, Hudson and Emily are also
talented artists and accomplished students. Hudson, who is in eighth
grade, is taking several high school-level courses this year, and Emily,
now in sixth grade, is a straight-A student.
“OI doesn't rule our lives, but of course, you have to set limits,”
Angela said. “Some parents were amazed that I would allow them to
play on a playground, which to me is just a given. But then there are
situations like yesterday when Hudson informed me he wants to skydive. I told him the falling part is fine, but the landing part makes it
completely out of the question.”

While osteoporosis most typically affects people over age 50, the best defense against it begins
during childhood. In the United States today,
10 million people have been diagnosed with osteoporosis – a condition characterized by decreased
bone mass and density, causing a high risk for fractures. An additional 34 million individuals have
been identified as having low bone mass, a risk
factor for the disease.
Osteoporosis causes more than one million
bone fractures each year, including 700,000 spine
fractures, 300,000 hip fractures, and 250,000 wrist
fractures.
Bone mass (the amount of bone tissue in the
skeleton) accumu-lated during childhood and
adolescence is an important factor in lifelong bone
health. As much as 90 percent of a person's peak
bone mass is established by age 18 for girls and
age 20 for boys. Clearly, it is essential that we do
everything we can to be sure children learn
healthy habits to build bone mass for life.
One of the most important nutrients affecting
bone health is calcium, which the body does not
produce and must be obtained through foods. In
addition to strengthening bones, calcium helps the
heart, muscles and nerves to work correctly, and
is important to dental health. In general, three
servings of foods containing calcium each day will
provide the amount needed. However, government
studies indicate calcium is one of the nutrients
most likely to be missing or lacking from the
American diet. Nearly nine of 10 women and eight
of 10 men are not getting enough calcium.
Healthy bones also need vitamin D, as well as
magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and protein
to increase bone mineral content and density.
Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. Without
enough vitamin D, the body must take calcium
from the skeleton, weakening existing bone and
preventing the formation of new, strong bone
material.
Vitamin D can be obtained from foods, exposure to the sun and from supplements. Foods containing vitamin D include fortified milk, egg yolks,
some kinds of fish and liver.
In addition to proper nutrition, exercise is
important for bone health. Weight-bearing activities, such as walking, running, and jumping rope,
help strengthen bones and improve bone mass. It
is important that children and adolescents are
encouraged to participate in an appropriate exercise program.
As a health care system that offers expert pediatric orthopaedic care, Shriners Hospitals for
Children® is encouraging and emphasizing
healthy habits for bones, as well as providing
nutrition tips for bone health.

Now that the 2010 Shriners
Parade Season is over, I would
personally like to thank all the
Temple Guard Unit members
and associate members who
took part in these events.
As most of you are aware, we
have nine uniformed members,
and during the season we averaged seven uniformed members
present! That is outstanding participation, and I applaud each
and every one of you for your
efforts and commitment. I’m
sure the hierarchy of the Rhode
Island Shriners did not let that
escape their notice. I sincerely
thank you and look forward to
next year’s schedule.

Lucas is Rockin’ the Hospital
Through Music Therapy
Lucas Leary is rockin’ out at
Shriners Hospitals for Children®
— Boston thanks to the music
therapy program that was incorporated into his treatment plan
by hospital therapists, and a gift
from Raising the Blues, a nonprofit organization dedicated to
bringing music to hospitalized
children and children with disabilities.
Lucas came to Shriners
Hospitals for Children® in August
after a he was burned in a gasoline accident. “He was injured
while he was landscaping,” said
his mom, Stephanie. “We have
been so amazed at his recovery
since the accident and it’s due to
the great staff at Shriners
Hospitals for Children®.”
During Lucas’ music therapy
sessions, he expressed an interest in learning to play the guitar.
“We supported this as it would
address many goals for him
including increasing self-esteem,
increase adaptation to being in a
CUMBERLAND
hospital, and increasing his
repertoire of positive recreation
skills,” said Annette WhiteheadPleaux, music therapist at the
hospital.
There are many benefits to
music therapy, including helping
address the physical, emotional,
cognitive, and social needs of
children and adults. The ability
to play an instrument or have
music experience isn't required.
Lucas took to the instrument
quickly and showed a natural
talent. Whitehead-Pleaux thought
Raising the Blues might want to
help out. “When we heard from
Shriners Hospitals for Children®
that there was a teenager who
had responded well to learning
the guitar, we were pleased to be
able to donate the instrument,”
said Ruth E. Atherton, Ph.D.,
President of Raising the Blues.
“We look for children with unique
life challenges and offer them a
way to use music to help them
cope and recover.”

Rhode Island Shriners’ proudly host
Our Annual
Paper Drive & Hospital Day for Children
Saturday, October 2, 2010
by Noble Wayne Edward Sutton, Annual Paper Drive & Hospital Day for Children Chairman
9
years of success
The Rhode Island Shriners continue to bring valuable tools and educational
information to our families in need right here in Rhode Island.
Let me begin by extending our heartfelt and most sincere thanks to the following Shriners and friends who continue to offer their valuable
time and volunteer service to make this project an annual success asking nothing in return.
They come back every year. Why? Because this is what Shriners do!
The continued success of this annual event would not be possible without the help from
our dear friends at Dave's Market Place. Thank you to Renee Hughes at Dave's Market's
Corporate Headquarters and the kind and courteous store managers at Dave's on Cedar
Swamp Road in Greenville, Diamond Hill Road in Cumberland, Division Street in East
Greenwich, Tower Hill Road in North Kingstown, Airport Road in Warwick and Dave's
Market on West Shore Road in Warwick.
Seen at Dave's on
Tower Hill Road, North Kingstown
Please take the time to stop in at any of the Dave's markets, and thank these folks for
being so kind and helpful to us, not to mention the great food shopping you can experience. Renee Hughes and her team of store managers are the best. Always remember to
patronize the Dave's Marketplaces whenever you can. We could not be so successful
without their help.
Thank you to Fred Geary and the folks at TCI Press. They contribute the printing of our
Hospital Day Newspaper that we hand out during the paper drive. These are the guys that publish our award-winning Scimitar newspaper. If
you are looking for a printer then look no further than TCI. There prices are competitive and they go the extra mile for getting the job done.
A tip of the Fez and thank you to the Rhode Island Shriners Clown Unit and
Directors Staff. The Clown Unit and Directors Staff allowed us to utilize their tables
and chairs for the day, not to mention the many clowns that offered their smiles
and humor at each of the Dave's locations helping to bring a smile to the faces of
our Rhode Island children.
Showing the lead for others to follow!
We had many of our Divan Officers and Past Potentates offer their fraternal
friendship and volunteered time. A warm and kind thank you to our Shriners’ Ladies
Ann Adams and Joan Martin who offered their time and expertise to help us put all
of the contributions in numerical order. Believe me, this is no small job. And . . . this
project would not have been complete without the truly dedicated support by
Nobles Frank DiMascio and Wayne Sutton. These guys work together to make sure
that all of the tables, chairs and material are gathered, delivered and retrieved that
get used for the day.
These men and women deserve
a hearty handshake and sincere thank you!

Once again this year, your Paper Drive Chairman, Noble Wayne Sutton, made a
surprise phone call to all of the Dave's Marketplaces on behalf of the Rhode Island
Shriners members to speak with each store manager and extend our sincere
thanks for allowing us the continued and kind opportunity to promote our good
deeds and assisting us in our efforts to help spread the great work being done at
the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
We set out to make it known to all Rhode Islanders that the Rhode Island
Shriners are alive and well and continue our creed to assist less fortunate children
and young adults that may suffer from burn or bone-related problems right here
in every community throughout Rhode Island, the United States of America, and
worldwide.

The Paper Drive has proven to become a fast and economical means to spread
the word about no-cost orthopaedic and burn care for children. When a Noble
gives a free copy of the paper to a passerby, we often receive voluntary donations
to be used for the Shriners Hospitals. It should be known to all Nobles who assist
with the paper drives that Temple Paper Crusades are one of the largest fundraising events for Shriners Hospitals, raising millions of dollars each year; but the
main objective continues to be that of educating the public about Shriners
Hospitals and finding more children that our hospitals can assist.
On Saturday, October 2, 2010, we took over the exits at six Dave's locations, set
up our tables, chairs, posters and newspapers, appointed our team captains and
crew of Nobles, brought out the Rhode Island Shriners Clowns and went to work
from 9am – 3pm, spreading the word of the Shriners Hospitals, gave out thousands
of newspapers, blew up many balloons, entertained children and educated many
of our Rhode Island friends.
The weather was beautiful and along with our great spirit, we did quite well in
our mission to let our Rhode Island friends know that the Shriners are alive and
well and ready to assist our neighbors in need, whenever and wherever possible.
At the end of the day we also had the pleasure of being the recipient of
$3,273.79 in contributions of which every single dollar and cent will be given
directly to the Imperial Shriners Hospitals for Children Fund. Since the onset of our
paper drives in the year 2002, the Rhode Island Shriners members should be proud
to know that we have given a total of $28,978.29 to help support the Shriners
Hospitals for Children nationwide. It's a lot of work, but as you can see, the
rewards are plenty.
A special thank you and a great BIG “Tip of the Fez” to the Nobles listed to the
left who gave up some of their weekend time to join us in our efforts to make our
Annual Paper Drive a true success. Most of these guys have been part of the drive
teams since we started nine years ago . . . which is some serious dedication.
My heartfelt thanks,
Noble Wayne E. Sutton

William D'Abate Elementary School in Providence
4th - 5th Grade Students
Offer Their Support to the Shriners
by Noble Wayne Edward Sutton, Rhode Island Shriners Public Relations Chairman
We get many calls at our Shrine Center about kids that set out
with a goal to help the Shriners. I recently received a phone call from
Mr. Ray Allsworth, a 4th grade school teacher at the William D'Abate
Elementary School on Kossuth Street in Providence. He told me this
great story about the students at his school who come from some of
the poorest homes in Providence, but have some of the greatest
spirit of giving. Mr. Allsworth and approximately 140 4th - 5th grade
students were on a mission to collect as many can tabs that they
could because they knew that it would in some way help the Rhode
Island Shriners.
The Shriners Aluminum Tab Collection and Recycling Project has
been in existence for many years, and the money that we receive
from the recycling of the tabs is used to buy medical and nonmedical items for Shriners Hospitals for Children. The project
originated and is maintained by Helma Court #64, Ladies Oriental
Shrine of North America.
The home of the Rhode Island Shriners serves as a drop off
location for anyone that may have tabs they have collected. If you
have tabs to drop, we are located at One Rhodes Place in Cranston,
Rhode Island.
These kids could not have been more right!
When Mr. Allsworth contacted me, he wanted to know if I would
be interested in coming to his school and making a presentation to
the students and teachers about who the Rhode Island Shriners are,
what we do to help children, and why we ask friends to collect these
soda tabs. Speaking with the children and teachers has truly become
a great public relations opportunity.
Do you know a group or organization that collects tabs for the
Shriners? If so, please call our Public Relations Chairman, Noble
Wayne Sutton at (401) 461-0690, and he will be more than happy to
come and meet with your group to offer our thanks and present a
message about the Shriners Tab Collection Project.
Not only do the children learn about why we collect soda can
tabs, but they also get a well deserved congratulations for helping
the Rhode Island Shriners so together we can provide much needed
medical care for children. At the end of the school day, the children
bring this valuable information home and share it with their family
helping us to reach children and families that may need our help.
On November 8, 2010, I made my trip to meet with Mr. Ray
Allsworth and School Principal Mr. Kermen to come and meet with
these kids to express our sincere thanks for the kindness and great
efforts that these students offered to help the Shriners. The students
were so curious to know why we collect can tabs. It's truly an
education to see the most interesting questions that young children
will ask, and one hour of my presentation and questions and answers
seemed to go by in a flash.
To Mr. Ray Allsworth, Principal Kermen, teachers and the 4th
and 5th grade students at the William D'Abate Elementary School,
we offer our heartfelt thanks and our BIG Shriners smile for the
great work that these students have done to offer this wonderful gift
to the Shriners.
These kids are our Providence Hometown Heroes!

Cremation . . .
All funeral homes offer it, but
we offer it on-site. How does that
benefit you and your family?
Today you will find that most all funeral homes can
offer you “cremation services,” but we are one of
a select few who can offer your family the peace of
mind found with on-site cremation. Other funeral
homes will outsource your loved one to another
location for cremation. Having our own crematory
on-site is our way to guarantee that your loved one
will never leave our care. We are here for you and
your family from your first phone call and throughout your grief journey.
