CYBERSAFETY
Boy, it is so much harder being a child these days! Our children are growing up in a challenging world. In our
schools, we need to develop our students’ skills and strategies for an unknown world, and teach our students
how to be safe in the online world as well as in reality. For parents, the challenge is about balancing our busy
lives with protecting our children as well as giving them trust and a measure of freedom.
Does your child have Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Kik – or even iMessage? Are they old enough to have
accounts on these social media sites? Are you a ‘friend’ or ‘follower’ on their social media? At school we spend
a lot of time, particularly with the Senior School students talking about cybersafety and appropriate online behaviour (we don’t recommend or use these apps). We also use the safe environment of EdModo in the Middle
School to teach students these appropriate behaviours. It is important for parents to also monitor what their children are doing online, and have open conversations with them about their activity and online presence. It is so
important for children to feel they can talk to their parents about anything and not be “in trouble”.
REPORTS AND INTERVIEWS
Repeat from last week… As you know teachers are busily writing your child’s first semester reports at the moment. Our Senior School students will only get a written report and their progression point for the AusVELS curriculum, as we are trialling an online Learning Journal this year. This process involves assessed and annotated
student work being made available to parents throughout the year, providing real-time assessment and access
to how their child is progressing.
With the end of semester interviews, we expect all students to be present at the interviews. As the interview is
about their learning we think that each student should be part of that conversation. While we have been doing
this in Senior School for a number of years, we think it is important for all students to be involved in discussions
about their academic progress and setting goals for their own learning.
JAPANESE DAY
Next Thursday is a big day! Our biennial Japanese Day is always a huge highlight that is talked about
for a long time afterwards. Students spend the day enjoying a range of activities, and we finish the day
off at 2:30 with a parade and entertainment. Please make the time, if you can, to come along for that final session and join in the fun!!

CAFÉ READING CORNER
Don’t Hide the Pictures - Read Them!
The illustrations that accompany many texts are an essential source of information for, and clarification of,
reading comprehension and accuracy. They should never be covered up but explored and enjoyed. ‘Reading
the pictures’ is one of the three CAFÉ ways to read a book. The other two are ‘reading the words’ and ‘retelling
the story.’
Rory of Year 3 reviews a great book from our library that makes full use of the talented illustrator, Roland Harvey’s ability to show important information and meaning in pictorial form.

ISLANDS IN MY GARDEN by Jim Howes
A garden can be full of surprises. In the book “Islands in my Garden” by Jim Howes, every
page has interesting surprises to find. It’s like “Where’s Wally” but it’s really “Where’s
Bugs?” There’s creepy stuff and crawly things and you can read by the pictures because
they help you with the words. You will want to read this book over and over again. Can
you find the rainbow fungus or the fiddler beetle?

Video Games and their Impact on Children
This is an important topic that is relevant to many families in this era of increased technology . Get
equipped and protect your children from the potential harmful effects. Steve Dupon has the website
www.videogames.org.au and is running a parent education forum on attached flyer. Steven regularly
presents on the topic of children and video games and advises government on issues relating to technology and young people.
Girls and Friendships – Middle School Program
This week all the girls from the middle school completed a session on Friendships and Conflict. Here are the
key messages from the session in ‘What helps friendships?’:
We are all ‘perfectly imperfect’ – we all make mistakes – Forgiveness
No-one means to be mean! Separate the person from the behaviour – ‘I like you, but I don’t like your behaviour’. We are specific about the behaviour ie; ‘I don’t like it when you yell at me’
Arguments are a normal and healthy part of life – If it is a healthy debate great! If it is two people trying to convince the other that they are RIGHT it is not and we need to STOP. We all have different thoughts and ideas
about things. If the argument goes back and forth a few times and you start to feel upset….STOP, agree to disagree.
Find out what your friends’ like and dislike – you can’t treat all your friends exactly the same. ‘With Layla I can
be sarcastic, but not with Kate’. ‘With Kate I can be physical because we have brothers but Sarah doesn’t like
it’
Listening is the ultimate compliment you can give someone! Listen well
Let go of control (Bossy) – take a back seat, listen and enjoy the ride sometimes
Here are some sentences starters you can put on your fridge to encourage your daughter to reflect each day
by asking:

From The Office
CSEF (Camps, Sports and Excursion Fund)
As part of a new initiative the Government is providing funding to some families to help cover costs for
camps and excursions. If you are a current health care card holder, please bring your card to the office and
complete a form. Funds will be directly credited to the school with each eligible child receiving $125.00 (paid
in two instalments) which we are mandated to use for camps, excursions and incursions. Please note these
funds cannot be used towards requisites, any credits which have not been applied this year will be carried
over into 2016. This funding has been allocated for the next three years. Don’t forget to complete your
CSEF applications before end of Term. Closing date for applications is 26th June 2015.

If you received your child’s paid Sushi form home, could you please send it back to the Canteen, it appears
a couple of them made it home rather than to Megan in the Canteen.

JAPANESE CORNER- AYA SENSEI
Now it is Summer in Japan. It is the season for sports festivals. We do running, play ball
games, traditional dance and dance to Jpop music too. As you know Warranwood’s Japanese day is NEXT Thursday. Warranwood student are trying traditional
Japanese dance, singing and also doing a popular dance from ‘AKB48' (Japanese pop
group). The students are also trying “Odama Korogashi", a famous ball game in Japan.
All students have to work together to bring a big ball to the goal. I'm very happy and surprised because Warranwood students are experiencing and are studying hard about Japan for Japanese day. My students from Japan send their best wishes to Warranwood
primary school. I can't wait for Japanese day!
Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge – 2015
There’s still time to register!
Congratulations and good luck to those students who have taken on the 2015
reading challenge this year! Students who have returned their forms have been registered and given their individual user name and password.
Consent forms are still available at the front office for those wishing to register this
year. These permission forms need to be handed back to classroom teachers as
soon as possible.

Sports News
I have 6 general admission tickets to the Carlton v Port Adelaide AFL game at the MCG on Saturday 20 June. The game starts at 1.40 PM. The tickets give free entry for adults and/or children
and are supplied free to our school by the AFL. Tickets can be collected at the PE office.

Camp Jungai
Middle School camp is coming up in August- Monday the 24th to Wednesday 26th. The deposit
of $50 was due to be returned today, as well as the form to signal intent on coming. The two remaining payments are due on the 25th June and 23rd July.
Letters from parents wishing to volunteer for the camp are also asked to be handed to Alison
McMenamin (Middle School Team Leader) by the end of the day tomorrow.
