Governor Minner tells graduates to cherish college experience
On April 27, 2001, 322 GBC
graduates were welcomed into the
MBNA America Hall for commencement ceremonies. They received
recognition for their academic achievements and well wishes for the challenges
they’ll face outside the College.
Keynote speaker, Governor Ruth Ann
Minner, shared her memory of leaving
high school at the age of 16 to help
financially support her parents and
siblings and later, at the age of 32,
earning her GED. She continued by
telling the graduates to take great pride
in their accomplishments and to cherish
the memories of that evening. She
added, “This is not the end of your life’s
accomplishments—it is one of a string
of cherished memories.”
Governor Minner continued by
encouraging the graduates to be of
service to others. She stated, “You have
an opportunity to move our country
forward into the new millennium. As
you move forward in your career,
remember the people who helped you. It
is your responsibility now to reach out
and help someone else achieve.” She
concluded her address with her vision
for the graduates to have a good life that
included a great career and wonderful
family life.
During the ceremonies, Governor
Minner was presented with an Honorary
Doctorate of Business Administration
degree.
The day’s events also included the
presentation of the Excellence in
Teaching award which was given to
Professor Susan Stranix.
Congratulations again to this year’s
graduating class. Goldey-Beacom
welcomes you as alumni and hopes you
will keep your ties to the college by
being active participants in the Alumni
Association. Best wishes for your
continued success, prosperity, and
happiness.
During her address to the graduates, Governor Ruth Ann Minner
reminded them of the need to help others achieve their goals.
Professor Susan Stranix received her Excellence in Teaching Award from President Ilyas.
MBA students prepare to receive their hard-earned degrees. Sixty-five students graduated from
the MBA program.
Graduates get together to celebrate after the ceremonies.
The Class of 2001 are all smiles at the conclusion of the evening’s events.

Reflections—Summer 2001
GBC alumni celebrate outstanding achievements at annual event
GBC alumni gathered to honor three
of their own at the Distinguished
Alumni Gallery Induction Banquet held
on May 4, 2001. New DAG Inductees
Priscilla Bradley Rakestraw and Thomas
G. Wintermantel were recognized for
their achievements in their professional
lives as well as for their commitment to
their communities.
Priscilla Bradley Rakestraw is a 1962
graduate of Goldey-Beacom College. In
1992, she was the first woman to be
elected to the office of New Castle
County Register. Later, in 1997, she
joined Wilmington College as Director
of Business Development. Priscilla is
extensively involved in local and national
governmental activities, and has
been Delaware’s Republican National
Committeewoman since 1975.
Along with her political involvement,
Priscilla is also a community-minded
activist. She is well known for her
fundraising activities. She was recently
awarded the Ministry of Caring’s 2001
Caring Bowl Award for her outstanding
service on behalf of the poor and
homeless.
Inductee Thomas G. Wintermantel
earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting attending morning and evening
classes while he worked 25 hours a week
as an intern. He graduated in 1984 and
became a CPA in the State of Delaware
in 1986.
Today, he is President and Trustee of
the John W. Rollins Foundation, and
Financial Vice President and Treasurer of
John W. Rollins & Associates, Rollins
Jamaica, Ltd., and Rose Hall Resort, Ltd.
Over the years, Tom has kept strong
ties with the college as an active member
in the Alumni Association serving as its
Treasurer, Vice President, and President.
Tom is a member of Rotary International and is a volunteer coach for the
Delaware Special Olympics.
The “Rising Star Award” was presented to Michael Cleary who graduated
in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science
degree in Marketing. While at the
College, Mike was elected President of
Kappa Omega Pi, founded and served as
president of Alpha Tau Omega, and
earned the Jay W. Miller Award for
contributions to campus life. Soon after,
he began a remarkable entrepreneurial
career in the travel industry.
Before starting his own firm, he
served in management positions for
Esprit Tours. In 1997, he joined Expert
Travel Associates and in 1998 he
purchased the firm. In 1999, he sold his
interest to Lynx Vacations and in June
he will have completed his contract with
Lynx and has begun plans for several
land development projects.
Michael remains committed to his
community, involved in fundraising for
cancer programs and local charities.
All of the recipients represent the best
of GBC. Not only have they made their
mark in the business world but they
have also contributed to the improvement of their communities while
continuing their ties to the college.
Former DAG recipients pose for a picture with the newest inductees. Everyone say “CHEESE.”
Priscilla Rakestraw ‘62 is a fine example of a DAG
recipient. Her involvement in business, government,
politics, as well as charitable causes, shows a strong
commitment to her community at large.
Mark Olazagasti ‘85 and his wife
Laura Aloisio Olazagasti ‘85 (former
“Miss GBC”) celebrate Mark’s selection
as Margaret J. Moore Alumnus of the
Year. This award recognizes his many
contributions to the Alumni Association.
DAG Recipient for 2001 Thomas G. Wintermantel ‘84 celebrates with his wife,
Sheila, and two daughters, Jessica and Erika. Note that the wonderful portrait

Review the wide variety of
options. There is a giving
opportunity just right for you—
no matter the size, purpose, or
timing of your gift. Insurance
policies, retirement plans,
bequests, or trusts can all be used
to help the College, yet meet
your financial and tax goals.
Remember, your gift is needed
to maintain the Goldey-Beacom
tradition. Over the years, the
generosity of our many friends
has made the College what it is
today. Your gift can help in so
many ways—by providing
scholarships, by helping meet
rising cost of providing a quality
education, or by increasing the
College operating endowment.
