WWT heater for innovation centre
egistered charity, The
R
Sylva Foundation, has
purchased a wood waste
INSIDE
heater from Wood Waste
Technology, for its new
Wood Centre in the heart of
Oxfordshire.
Sylva works across Britain
caring for forests, to ensure
they thrive for people and for
nature. Having been gifted 20
acres of land and several large
farm buildings a few years
ago, the charity has used this
to develop a centre for
innovation in home-grown
wood, to provide an enterprise
hub for new and innovative
wood-using businesses.
The charity knew it wanted
to install a flexible biomass
heating solution into the
centre. An old 12,000 square
foot potato store had been
redesigned and rebuilt to
support a number of separate
small to medium enterprise
wood-using businesses, as
well as a teaching classroom.
The team didn’t want anything
too complex in there, as their
main aim was to supply
tenants of the Wood Centre
with warm workshops that
would be cost-effective to run
by being fuelled with waste
wood and wood offcuts.
A number of possible
solutions were evaluated, but
the team eventually purchased
a WT15 heater from Wood
Waste Technology, which was
installed by Wood Waste
Technology’s experienced
engineers.
Paul Orsi, Director for
Forestry & Rural Enterprise at
Sylva explains: “Wood Waste
Technology gave us the
perfect solution to our heating
problem. We were struggling
to find something that fitted our
budget and was easy to use,
but that would provide a
comfortable environment for
our tenants. It was also
extremely important to us that
it could be run on wood waste.
We’re delighted with our
purchase and the service
we’ve received. It’s been a
completely smooth process,
from purchase to installation.
Whilst the wood waste heater
is situated in a central area,
the engineers were able to
duct the hot air to provide heat
into each of the tenant’s
individual workshops. The
tenants’ love that it provides
them with free heating and
reduces their waste disposal
bills.”
Paul continues, “Our wider
vision for the Sylva Wood
Centre is to develop the whole
site – which includes several
more buildings and the
surrounding landscape. We
wouldn’t hesitate in contacting
Wood Waste Technology
again should we have any
further biomass heating
needs.”
MD of Wood Waste
Technology, Kurt Cockroft
says: “We’ve been delighted to
be involved in such an exciting
and innovative project, and
look forward to seeing how the
developments at the Wood
Centre continue.”
Wood Waste Technology
offers a full range of wood
waste heaters, from small
hand fired units to larger fully
automatic systems, and offers
site survey and design, as well
as manufacture, installation
and on-going maintenance.
The company also services all
types of wood waste heaters
and supplies genuine spares
up to 60% cheaper than other
suppliers.
In addition, Wood Waste
Technology is the UK official
distributor for Gross
Apparatebau GmbH, a
German manufacturer of
dependable, precision
engineered shredders and
briquetters, available in
various size and specifications
to suit all business
applications.

The marketing campaign is
being supported with a
beautifully designed coffee
table style book that features
pre and post Abranet imagery
and data to reinforce the
abrasive’s ability to deliver
clean, virtually dust-free
working environments.
The data is founded on
research conducted by Dura
Group, a leading independent
environmental monitoring and
data management company,
in laboratory conditions,
supported by the Finnish
Work Environment and Mirka.
The aim was to determine
airborne dust emission in
sanding with a ventilated
manual sanding machine,
comparing Abranet products
with perforated paper.
The results showed that
sanding with the abrasive net
reduced the airborne dust
emission per the removed
mass at between 99.96 and
99.99 per cent depending on
the material, compared to
between 97.05 and 99.76 per
cent for perforated paper.
When sanding gypsum
plaster, the removed mass
per unit time was 2.6 and 1.4
times higher with the net
abrasive than in sanding
without extraction and when
sanding with paper
incorporating six holes
respectively. While the
surface of the paper sanding
material became clogged, the
Abranet abrasive with
extraction improved the
effectiveness of the sanding
by preventing clogging and

per unit time.
Craig Daycock, managing
director of Mirka UK, says,
“The laboratory tests
conducted in Finland
revealed that by using
Abranet in conjunction with
modern sanding systems
occupational exposure to
airborne dust in sanding
operations can be decreased
to acceptable levels,
especially when combined
with well-designed sanding
machines equipped with local
extraction and air supply.
The ‘Abranet Perfection’
campaign is designed to
highlight the benefits of
sanding using Mirka’s
Abranet range of abrasives in
terms of producing virtually
dust-free results as well as a
consistent, smooth, high
quality finish across a range
of applications.”

to install an additional
horizontal band resaw, they
had no hesitation in opting
for a Stenner MHS10, given
their 30-year long
association with the
Tiverton-based company,
one of the world leaders in
wide bandsaw technology.
It was the latest in a long
line of Stenner-supplied
machines for George, who
originally established Terregles

building an excellent
reputation for providing quality
sawn softwood material, used
for boxes, fencing and pallets.
In 2003, the business took
over the former
Rammerscales sawmill site at
Hightae near Lockerbie. The
new, larger sawmill was
originally equipped with a
Primultini log bandmill with

with the performance of the
MHS9, and so decided to
install an additional horizontal

sourced within a local radius.
Our customer base is quite
wide: we service Lincolnshire,
Birmingham, Liverpool,
Manchester and Leicester.”
The installation of the

BY STEPHEN NEWTON OF ROOKSBRIDGE WINDOWS
do enjoy looking at new
projects and finding solutions
to challenges. One of this
month’s new enquiries was full
of surprises and definitely has
some challenges.
At the beginning it was just a
simple phone message, ‘looking for
a quotation for some ‘restoration /
replacement of some windows at a
property, please call me back.’
When calling back it seemed that
there would be around 15 - 20
windows in a commercial building –
mainly wooden.
Looking at the photos that were
sent prior to the visit, all were taken
from the road elevation. If the
photos included the rear elevation;
then I would have prepared
differently, but I now understand
why there were no photos. When
there, the windows were over three
floors with substantial frame
sections of which several had swept heads. Due
to listed building status; the mouldings needed to
be similar but to incorporate contemporary
performance, double glazing and full draft proofing.
An extra complication to the ground floor was that
additional security was required, including purpose
made attractive decorative grills.
Access for installation was another factor to the
enquiry, in that the building was built around the
corner of an ‘S bend’ in a road which crossed a
small river and would need to be closed while the
refurbishment was carried out. However; what I
was certainly not prepared for was that the rear
elevation overlooked a wharf which would make
access even more complicated yet again.
Instead of the 15 or so windows that I was
expecting, there ended up being 25 and a feature

Oak screen along with a boat house. The
customer said that we could get access to the rear
elevation to put scaffolding up - when the tide was
out…..
I like to be prepared with at least a tape
measure, a survey book and a few special bits and
pieces to take copies of moulding details etc. when
carrying out a survey - even a ladder on occasions
– but never a boat….

I remember that I was once asked to make a
counter for a large boat – almost a ship – that was
used for corporate hospitality on the Thames. It
was through a friend of mine who knew I liked a
challenge and the first challenge was getting the
tools onto the boat. We had to walk across a
narrow gang plank. It did have a rope handrail –
but rope does give a bit when you lean on it. When
you have tools in one hand a wobbly bit of rope to
hold in the other with a long drop to uninviting
water on either side. I recall that I wobbled and
tried to grab the bag that had fallen off the sander
without it becoming even more dramatic – only to
sadly watch the sander bag float and drift away
down the Thames. The only humorous thing about
it was that I was able to send a photo of the bag
with a caption saying ‘help me’ as if floated out of
site to my friend you had given me the job and
enjoyed observing the challenge. That was not the
only extra unnecessary expense of the project –
we could not feed the meter as fast as the traffic
warden checked it.
All was well once on the boat, with all the tools
(Less the bag of the sander) and the materials.
Then came another unexpected challenge of
striking a line to mark the height of the underside
of the new counter. When I put my spirit level on
the mark – the bubble moved… just like the boat
as it rocked on the tide. The floor even sloped up
towards the stern and the sides of the ship tapered
in at the front; so that we eventually we used
measurements and a straight edge to draw a line
to work to, knowing that no one would be
completely balanced to be able to suggest
anything different.
Probably my most complicated survey was for an
Oak walkway that sloped around the inside walls of
an hexagonal building for which the supporting
legs had to fit exactly onto the floor that curved
down into the centre of the building.
I hope that next month will be simple, easy, with
no time critical projects – but let’s see…

But the increasing costs

continuing worry. The work is
there, but project delays, thin
margins and often unrealistic

significant threats. An
increase in the cost of

The State of Trade survey

constraint that has tended to
drive wage inflation and limit
the opportunity to grow.
There is also economic
uncertainty. Recent stock
market declines have
impacted confidence and the
availability of capital. The
elections in Scotland, Wales,
Northern Ireland and London
are all likely to impact the
timings of investments. We
also have the EU referendum
starting to ripple through the
market, which could impact
timing of projects, particularly
in the commercial sector.
With projects potentially

that contracts are fair and
retentions and late payment

need to work together to
manage and balance out the
risk or the supply chain will
struggle to flex as required.

process of panels is
completed at an efficient
20m/min feed speed for all
programs. Also included in
the installation is the
Transcompakt panel return
system enabling one
operator to run the machine,
whilst still efficiently feeding
panels. The machine is fully
automatic in operation and
even the tape is set
automatically in its guide.
All panels are fully finished,
thanks to the patented LCM

the new machine. All
cleaning fluids are available
from FEN UK and supplied
the next day.
Paul Terroni says: “Over
the years we have had a total
of 5 edgebanding machines

delivery, the old machine was
removed in the morning and
the new machine was
already in position by lunch
time. That enabled electrical
and pneumatic supplies to be
completed next. Included in
the supply was also a new
powerful extraction system,
which was fully installed and
connected in only one day.
The result was that both the
new ‘Storm’ edgebanding
machine and Transcompakt
panel return were fully ready
for production the very next

‘Zero-joint’ technology increasingly popular for

Homag demystifies
the increasingly
complex world of

A
have driven quality
expectations higher and
higher, particularly in
manufacturing. The
furniture industry is no
exception and one
manifestation of this is the
advent of edgebanding
‘without joints’ or, as it is
more commonly known,
‘zero-joint’ technology.
There is now a mindboggling range of options
to choose from, so we
thought it would be a good
idea to demystify the
process.
Simon Brooks, sales and
marketing director of Homag
UK explains, “The Homag
Group has been a pioneer of
edgebanding since 1960
and so, with over 55 years’
experience under its belt, is
well placed to explain the
potentially confusing world
of edging.”
Cost-effective EVA Glue
The original edging solution,
EVA offers simple, clean,
reliable edgebanding which
can be used on a wide
range of board and edge
materials. It is the
no detriment to the quality of
the product whatsoever.
Nowadays, having seen
major advances in the
chemistry of PUR adhesive,
it is a trouble free bonding
material providing a cross
linked bond that once fully
cured is very strong and
very stable. PUR can be
used on a wide range of
materials and is particularly
popular in the kitchen,
bathroom, washroom and
door markets due to its
ability to resist moisture and
heat.
airTec Technology
The airTec technology uses
hot air and special edge
material to form an invisible
or ‘zero-joint’. The special
edge material consists of a
hard décor layer backed
with a meltable functional
layer. This functional layer is
melted by the hot air and
then pressed onto the panel
edge. The airTec process is
very clean and cost-effective
and results in perfectly
crafted products, where
joints are no longer visible.
The airTec system is
available across Homag’s
immense knowledge and
experience that the Homag
Group has amassed has
enabled the company to
provide the right

levels of manufacturing.”

Water Resistant PUR Glue
Higher specification jobs
can require water or heat
resistant products and PUR
adhesive provides this
additional performance. Far
less PUR adhesive per
square metre is required to
form a much stronger bond
when compared to
traditional hot melts.
Consequently, this reduced
volume of adhesive results
in a very tight glue line. It
also offers superior bond
strength to EVA, although it
does take longer to fully
cure than the instant ‘grab’
of EVA; this, however, has
full range of edgebanders
allowing even the smaller
business to compete in the
invisible joint market where
frontals such as doors and
drawers need to be at a very
high standard.
laserTec for high volume
invisible edging
Laser technology enables
manufacturers to produce
invisible joints at high
volumes. The laser fuses
the edge band to the panel
at speeds of up to 60m/min
and delivers perfect quality
every time. Homag ’s
system, laserTec, is a
simple but highly effective
solution that delivers more
parts produced per unit of
time. Laser joining allows
you to achieve consistent
production quality and to
reduce the staff costs
associated with postprocessing and finishing.

Homag laserTec – the
ultimate high speed
edging technology
Compared to conventional
glue-based methods,
Homag laserTec offers
immense benefits. It
simplifies the edging
process enormously,
eliminating unproductive
waiting periods and set-up
work for colour changes.
Separate settings for glue
quantity and temperature
are no longer required, nor
are entries for different
materials such as chipboard
per year. The consistently
high standard of processing
quality substantially reduces
the scrap volumes,
delivering maximum
production efficiency.
Stronger bond with
improved safety and
environmental benefits
Not only does laserTec
produce an invisible
surface-to-edge transition,
but also the bond achieved
between the edge and the
panel is considerably
stronger and more robust
than with conventional
techniques. What’s more,
the work pieces,
downstream processing
units and the tools on the
machine are far less
susceptible to contamination
than with conventional
edgebanding adhesives.
Glueless production is
particularly environmentally
friendly, as it eliminates glue
fumes and prevents any risk
of hot melt glue being burnt
in the machine. In addition,

edging on a selection of

This innovation means that
all work pieces with shaped
edgebanded edges can be
produced with the same
high quality and aesthetic
standard as straight edged
components.
Simon Brooks concludes,
“The Homag Group offers a
comprehensive range of
edgebanding machinery for
the UK market. From entry

FURNITURE NEWS
2016 trends unveiled at the
January Furniture Show
he new mood for reclaim
T
and upcycle was evident
at The January Furniture
Show 2016 (Birmingham
NEC, January 24 -27) where
exhibitors from across the
furniture and furnishings
sector gathered to
showcase the latest in
home fashions.
From the understated cool
of 'industrial rustic' to
contemporary materials and
green technology, the show,
which hosted 450 exhibitors,
encompassed current and
upcoming fashion trends.
From super de luxe glamour
to wow factor brights or funky
new takes on retro styles, the
full spectrum of the new
design agenda was in
evidence at the UKs biggest
and most comprehensive
interiors event.
Cabinet
On trend reclaimed looks
were noticeable throughout
the show mixing dark bold
woods with metal and red
brick settings and offering
innovative ideas in structure
and materials. From a
fashionably uncompromising
industrial look to a softer,
more mainstream
interpretation, the new
appetite for reworked furniture
couldn't be ignored, with
plenty of inspiration on how to
play it.
Elsewhere, the move
towards a more eclectic mix
of furniture could be seen with
leather covered trunks and
drawers and an imaginative
array of conversational,
statement pieces.
The dusky hues and muted
tones of Parisienne-style
painted furniture remains
popular, moved on to meet
the mood of the day for a
greyed out palette. Also on
show was an array of glass
collections, perfect for
creating an opulent bedroom
or making a statement in the
dining room. Mirrored
collections continue to thrive,
adding a touch of bling and
sparkle to the home.
Upholstery
With the 'reclaim and upcycle'
message coming through loud
and clear on the cabinet front,
this eclectic look is being
matched on upholstery with
vintage style "pre-loved"
muted leathers with a wax
finish - or mixed with linens
and scatter back cushions for
a homespun arts and crafts
feel.
It's a more English take on
the still popular Navaho-style
leather sofas teamed with
cushions and kilims which
provide such a warm and
welcoming look. Think relaxed
living, feature or statement
pieces and upholstered
footstools as big as coffee
tables providing a finishing
focal point. Away from large loungers
(and there's still corner sofas
aplenty) there's a more
feminine, dainty feel to
upholstery that comes in
misty pastels. Mix it up with
washed out vintage prints for
a gentle nod to the popular
retro look. There's room too for the
bright and the loud for those
brave enough to take on wow
factor sofas and chairs in
clashing primary bolds. It's
fun, fresh and decidedly
young. Or make an
unmissable statement with
monochrome mixes of
houndstooth, black velvets
and textured fabrics which
spell glamour with a
capital 'G'.
10 Woodworking News February 2016
Look too, to the detail
where the fashion for the
'industrial rustic' manifests
itself in new and unusual
ways to incorporate studding.
See it along the top edge of
sofas, down the side of arms
or running along the bottom
plinth, providing subtle
definition of the overall shape.
Fabrics
Leather keeps a hold on UK
tastes, much of it worked with
industrial chic in mind. Away
from these raw and matt
shades of brown and tan,
edgy new tones of grey and
hickory take the story forward
while classic cream and black
will never go away.
But the biggest fabric story
of the show came dressed in
velvet. Crushed is still cool
but making a flamboyant new
entrance were velvet-style
textiles in all kinds of guises:
printed, woven or in geometric
relief on a mesh background.
Welcomed too were quilted
velvets and a host of other
textured effects. Colours are
deep turquoise, greys, silver
blues and other metallic effect
finishes.
Against the plush was the
pure. Coming through to meet
a need for cleaner lines and
simpler colours is a new
generation of heavier fabrics
which take their inspiration
from, and give a modern day
twist to herringbones,
houndstooth, tweeds and
wools. The look is natural but
interesting.
Flooring
'Soft and grey' sums up the
outlook for 2016 on the
flooring front. A sea of greys
floored the show and will
continue to set the tone in the
year ahead. Every
conceivable shade was on
offer from cool concrete greys
to soft silvers and deep dark
charcoals. Taupes are still
sought after along with 'new
neutrals' such as light blues,
grey based lilacs and sage
greens.
Polypropylenes are still
dominant when it comes to
carpet type but the demand is
for high quality and super soft.
While naturally inclined to the
safe and neutral, carpet hasn't
shied away from colour with
plenty of bright options for the
dare-to-be-differents.
Otherwise, rugs continue to
be the 'high fashion hit' of the
home, the latest featuring
bold geometric designs in ontrend colour palettes.
Lighting
Lighting schemes are growing
in sophistication with a move
away from ceiling spotlights
and an increase in wall and
low-level lights. Finish-wise
mixing and matching metal gold, pewter and brass - is
key for this year. The look to
love is through layering,
mixing and blending different
materials, textures and
colours for instant character
and added style over a dining
table or island.
Anything large scale and
made from rustic materials
with a raw finish is hot for
2016. Metal and glass were
trending at the show with lots
of urban black metalwork
teamed with giant Eddison
bulbs, pendant lighting and
classic floral glass.
It's all about the more the
merrier with a distinct trend
towards lighting with multiple
shades/bulbs, often in bright
contemporary colours such as
reds, greens and blues.
Accessories
The show offered a treasure
trove of home accessories,
from opulent high end pieces
to modern sleek designs. And
while colour has made a
comeback (bright yellows,
pinks, greens, reds and
purples really showing

through) the vintage-style
offer remains strong,
interesting and oh-socompelling.
Cushions came in an
awesome variety of patterns
and plains, drawing on a wide
wheel of colour and styles,
though aqua and coral along
with lavender and yellow are
key colours for the season
ahead. Still the easy solution
for adding a pop of colour or
blast of interest to tired
interiors, cushions are king of
the finishing touch.
Walls come alive with iconic
legend prints, giant fob
watches, huge mirrors and
subtle art while anyone with a
love of champagne, cocktails
and fine dining could find
unique, stand out pieces of
culinary artefacts and kitchen
curiosities.

High quality
edgebanding
Three gluing systems from SCM Group
blended together with perfect aesthetics
and functionality
he perfect aesthetics of
T
panels, even in large
batch productions, has
always been one of the
main objectives of SCM
Group’s technological
research. The new
AirFusion and PuBox L
solutions not only provide
innovative and real
advantages for the operator,
but also increases the
already impressive range of
edge gluing technologies,
such as the glue roller
optimised with a tank or the
SlimLine technology.
All SCM Group’s edge
gluing technologies have
been designed with a focus
on competitiveness, cost
effective production,
investment scalability and the
maximum care for the
materials used.
AIRFUSION
AirFusion provides a
surprising level of finishing
quality. This technology,
edgebanding without glue,
ensures the joint between the
edge and the panel is
invisible. Pressurised air at a
high temperature is conveyed
on a specific edge so that a
layer of the material fuses
with the panel, therefore
ensuring glue is unnecessary.
The extremely versatile
AirFusion technology is
compatible and can be
12 Woodworking News February 2016
perfectly integrated with
traditional gluing
technologies. It is also
available on the whole range
of the SCM Group’s
edgebanders, starting from
the Olimpic K360 range.
AirFusion, with speeds
from 15 to 25 metres per
minute, can be configured to
achieve different levels of
performance.
PUR glue
Being more competitive due
to quality edgebanding with a
limited level of investment
seems to be an optical
illusion. But the patented Slim
Line edgebanding technology
has made this a reality. The
PUR glue can be applied
directly on to the non-porous
surface edge and the quantity
of glue dispensed can be
precisely regulated, even with
practically invisible glue lines
of just 0.08 millimetres! This
considerable aesthetic quality
can be achieved with an
extremely small investment.
PUR glue, whose quality is
acknowledged and certified
by the strictest tests (Uni
9240:1987, for
adhesion/tearing; Din 68930,
heat/humidity climate cycle;
Uni 9242:1987, heat
resistance of edges), ensures
maximum machining quality
and technically perfect
results.

PU BOX L
The new pre-melting device
for polyurethane glue, PU
BOX L, with its compact
design and perfect integration
within the machine, is
designed to maintain the
performance of PUR glue at
optimal levels and improve
consumption by melting the
glue only when it is required.
The exclusive CFS cooling
device prevents the
undesired increase in
viscosity and, therefore, the
progressive ageing of the
glue that is left in the melting
chamber. A fast melting and
glue level reset system in the
PUBOX L prevents
incrustations, by reducing the
quantity of melted glue in the
glue tank by 50%, providing
the maximum level of
protection from humidity –
and therefore from
reticulation – as far as the
application roller zone, also
due to the direct closed circuit
coupling of the pre-meting
device with the glue tank.
These are just some of the
numerous technical features
that prove how SCM Group’s
mission is focused on
transforming innovation into
tools that allow companies
and operators to create better
products and increase their
competitiveness.

scale users looking to
improve efficiency and finish
on edging up to 2mm. Touch
screen control is standard,
with optional pre-milling,
corner rounding, buffing and
scraping units can all be
specified individually for a low
cost introduction to throughfeed edgebanding.
Compact – with a faster
feed rate, increased edging
capacity up to 3mm and a
large 7” touch screen control
the Compact model is also
available with any
continual research and
development, and it shows.
‘Price is never our primary
consideration when sourcing
equipment for our customers,
but the Cehisa range are
incredible value for money’,
says Andy. ‘They achieve this
by manufacturing virtually
every aspect of the machines
in house, maintaining strict
quality control. Feed back
from our customers to date
has been encouraging and I
look forward to showing the
range off at our Open House’

Specialist CNC
machining solutions
For many years JJ Smith Woodworking Machinery have offered specialist,
bespoke equipment to suit customers individual production requirements.
Rather than take a ‘one size fits all’ approach, they have carefully selected a
number of partners to work with each of whom are specialist in different , but
associated sectors of manufacturing. This is highlighted by the cooperation JJ
Smith have established with three leading manufacturers of CNC equipment,
Comec Group, Intorex and MZ Project. T
he Comec Group and JJ
Smith have been
working together for
over 20 years, initially offering
a range of mechanical
drilling, slotting, shaping and
cutting machines mainly for
use in the solid wood
furniture industry. As the
company grew and expanded
they entered in to the design
and manufacture of a range
of specialist CNC machinery
that can be adapted and used
to produce a wide range of
components.
The FRONTAL series of
machines consist of a
vertical automatic hopper
feed loader, with a ‘step by
step’ through feed system
which delivers the component
to different machining stations
which can include saw units,
horizontal / vertical, drilling,
routing and end / face milling.
This particular model of
machine can be used for
manufacturer of wood turning
equipment, and in particular
for their range of CNC lathes
which have become
increasingly popular due to
their quick, simple set up and
flexibility. There are 3
different models to choose
from, each offering different
levels of productivity and
machining options depending
on customers individual
requirements. In recent years
Intorex have developed their
range of 4 and 5 axis CNC
‘between centres’ machining
centres which can produce a
wide range of complex
shaped furniture parts along
with stair spindles and newel
posts. A unique feature of
these machines are the CNC
controlled sanding heads,
which allows for
the components to come off
as ‘finished’ sanded items. In

special functional layer. With
the Infratec edging
Ostermann offers a solution
for the use of NIR technology.
The new Infratec Logo: This is
how to recognize the new
Ostermann Edging.
Near Infrared Radiation
(NIR) technology
The Near Infrared Radiation
(NIR) technology enables
heat energy to be delivered
precisely to the active layer of
the edging, before it is
pressed onto the board. A
major advantage of this
technology is the noiseless
processing and immediate
readiness of the machine for
operation. So no warm-up
time during processing is
necessary. In addition, no
energy is consumed in the
gaps between each panel
and there is no cleaning
required.
Ostermann Infratec edging
Ostermann has quickly dealt
with the new processing
technology and obtained
information from the
equipment manufacturers to
offer an integrated edging
solution. The active layer of
Ostermann‘s Infratec edging
has a synthetic polyolefin
base and is applied
millimetre-exact in a
subsequent coating process.
It is available in 5 colours
(white, natural/beige, brown,
black or transparent) selected
to match the colour and
pattern of the edging.
All colours, all decors
With the transparent functional
layer Ostermann offers its
customers a very special
service. This variant has been
specially designed for the
precoating of the extreme
coloured edgings, such as
intense blue, green, red or
yellow. Ostermann delivers
the new Infratec edging with
functional layer for all ABS uni
and decor edgings up to a
width of 60 mm from one roll
and despatched within 4
working days.
Always a topic: Energy
Efficiency
Compared to the modern hot
air technology, the energy
consumption of the NIR
technology, due to the
immediate operational
readiness is generally lower.
In addition, functional layer of
the Infratec edging requires
less energy to be processed
than, say, a coextruded laser
edge, which can also be used
for the NIR technology. With
the new Ostermann solution
manufacturers can thus use a
wider edge but have with
equal energy consumption
(compared to the coextruded
edging). Numerous practical
tests have also shown that
with the Infratec edging the
maximum feed speed can be
processed.
Perfect companion to the
laser and Airtec edging
With the laser, the Airtec and
the Infratec edging,
Ostermann has consciously
decided to develop its own
solution for every edge
processing technology. This
has the advantage that for
each of the 3 "invisible
bondlines" the development
of the respective technologies
can be optimized and
adjusted according to the
requirements of customers. In
order to reliably deliver the
best Ostermann service in
this innovative field and to be
able to despatch edgings with
laser, Airtec and Infratec
functional layer after 4 days
in the future, Ostermann has
also invested in new
machinery.
Ostermann experts provide
on site advice
In addition to the already
established hot air
technology, the new NIR
technology offers the best
conditions for the use in the
trade. As a special service to
buyers and prospective
buyers of new NIR machines,
the Ostermann experts are
ready to answer any
questions and offer advice.
Ostermann offers not only the

Homag Group’s
woodCAD|CAM software
optimises production
processes from initial
design concept through to
the finished product. This
software is specifically
configured for Homag
Group machines to create
efficient order processing
and production.
“The furniture industry is
under huge pressure to
reduce manufacturing time
and costs in order to meet
ever tougher market
demands,” explains Simon
Brooks, sales and marketing
director at Homag UK. He
continues, “These days we all
expect quality products at
value for money prices and,
in this instant society, long
delivery times are just not
acceptable. On top of all this,
we want to own something
which is that little bit different,
something more bespoke. It’s
not a good feeling to walk into
someone else’s house and
see exactly the same
furniture as we have at home.
“These demands dictate
that not only do manufacturers
have to be extremely flexible
and in tune with the market,
but they also have to be able
to change designs and put
them into production quickly,
all in the most cost efficient
work flow. These drivers were
the very inspiration behind
Homag’s design-to-machine

concept.”
From Design Direct to

“This software delivers
parametric furniture design in
3D and provides a direct link
to the manufacturing
machines. This means that
whether for standalone
furniture or complex room
plans, the path from the first
concepts to production on the
machine is as simple as it is
impressive.
“Immediately following the
design process, production
drawings and bills of material
can be created at the click of
a mouse, with design data
automatically forwarded to
the saw, edgebander and
CNC machines. This ensures
perfect integration of
production machines into the
overall process,” enthuses
Simon.

have both required rip widths
and required amounts. Most importantly the Quick
Rip infeed is equipped with a
unique fenceless ‘auto skew’
device which skews the
board to be cut to give the
best possible yield based on
the required cut list that the
operator has entered and the
shape of the board. Also the
software and hardware are
set up to process 2 boards at
a time. While one board is
being fed in to the saw, the
second is being evaluated at
the operator station by the
lasers and sensors.
The net result of these
features is increased yield of
between 7% and 10% (when
compared to hand fed fixed
arbor saws) and production
throughput of around 10 to 12
(3m long) boards per minute.
Also because of the 3 moving
saw configuration there is
minimal lost time when
changing from job to job, all
the operator has to do is
make a quick / simple change
in the software program and
a completely different cutting
list can be run. This system
is particularly suited to ripping
random width timber.
The way the Quick Rip is
designed means that the
operator loads the timber on
to the infeed from the side so
away from the potentially
dangerous kick back area
directly in front of the saw.
Once a board has been
loaded on to the Quick Rip a
series of laser scanners
positioned at 300mm
intervals scan the full width /
length of the board (up to
4.9m) so the system knows
the width and shape of the
board and can see if it has a
bend and / or taper.
At this point the board can
be automatically skewed (if
required), with the overhead
lasers showing the cuts
possible from this particular
board based on the required
cut widths the operator has
programmed. If the board has
say a ‘skip’ on one edge or a
large knot, the operator has
the option to move the
laser/s from the control panel
to take this into account.
Once he is happy with the
presented ripping solution, he
presses the process button
and the servo driven cross
belts precisely deliver the
board to the infeed pinch
rollers which then feeds it in
to the saw.
At this point, the previous
board has already been cut
and the software has
positioned the moving blades
to suit the next required cut.
The Quick Rip is linked to a
Cameron MRS heavy duty
multirip saw and depending
on the model selected can
be equipped with 2, 3 or 4
moving blades, be it the most
popular is the 3 moving
blades MRS450 machine. All
can be equipped with fixed
sawblades / or a saw sleeve
at the end of the saw arbor
shaft that enables fixed
pockets to be programmed
giving the software even
more options to select from to
provide the best possible
ripping solution.
Using fixed blades and / or
a fixed saw sleeve can also
allow for the multiple cutting
of thin strips if desired.
Standard equipment on the
saw includes pneumatic
pressure to the feed rollers
with independent pressure
regulation, powered outfeed
roller, variable feed speeds
via inverter 5 to 40m/min (up
to 60 m/min on MRS 450
saw) with easy adjustment
from the control panel, digital
automatic lubrication system
and 50hp main motor (larger
on request). The machine
basement is of cast iron
construction with the 3
moving blade saw weighing it
at over 5 tons. For lower level production
Cameron also offer the MRS
Skew Rip Optimisation
System which uses exactly
the same OPTIRIP software
and auto skewing operation.
The main differences are that
production output is less,
about 6 boards per minute
and generally this system is
specified with a 2 moving
blade saw. Even so many of
the small mill operations in
the US market find this
system ideal for their
requirements and easy to
justify as it gives increased
production and improved
yield when compared to basic
fixed arbor manually fed rip
saws.
Cameron feel that through
a combination of their
dedicated OPTIRIP software,
coupled with the unique autoskewing device and quick set
up times, potential
customers can gain
significant improvements in
both yield and productivity.
This Rip System will be on
full demonstration at JJ
Smith’s Open House
Exhibition on 12,13,14th April.

Mighton previews Locking Angel
Yet another solution from
Mighton Products... Always
at the vanguard of product
design, the company
recently announced the
imminent release of a key
locking version of their
popular child safety device
for sash windows.
Known for listening to their
customer’s requests, the
decision to develop a locking
version came as a response
to the need for a combined
security and safety device
and follows the success of
the patented Angel Ventlock®
range of safety devices that
are now widely used across
the UK, USA and Europe.
Originally developed to
meet stringent standards in
the USA and Europe, the
Angel series has proved
immensely popular and are
now used across many
sectors from domestic to
military and fitted by some of
the world’s largest window
manufacturers.
The basic concept behind
the range is that they can
limit the sash opening to
100mm for venting, are nonreleasable by a child under 5,
and will re-engage
automatically when the sash
is closed.
The new Angel has added
benefit in that it can be locked
to provide added ‘double’
window security (it latches

and locks) in both the closed
and vented positions. The
product is for use on nonegress Windows only as
egress windows are used for
emergency escape and
rescue. The non-locking
version of the Angel can be
used on all windows.
There are two versions of
the Locking Angel, both are
intended for factory fit, but
could be fitted by a
competent homeowner. The
Facefix version is screw fixed
into the front face of the sash,
whilst the Sidefix version is
fixed through the side of the
sash, hiding the fixing
screws.
Mighton are confident the
product fits a niche. It allows
the customer to vent the
window, provides added
security but doesn’t
compromise child safety.

Dutch market
leader
appoints UK
firm as sole
agent
erhagen Leiden, the market leading Dutch
V
manufacturer, which specialises in high performance
industrial vacuum cleaners, has appointed Yorkshire-
based Industar, as its sole agent and distributor in the
UK.
Established for over 50 years, the Verhagen Leiden name is
synonymous with quality in its native Netherlands and its
product range is well known for its durability / low
maintenance reputation.
In the woodworking industry, given its onerous health and
safety requirements and the necessity for keeping the
environment dust free, Verhagen Leiden products have a
ready-made market. Not surprisingly, in the Netherlands the
company also enjoys a strong following in the agriculture and
horticulture sectors, where its high powered turbo vacuums
enable farmers and growers to keep workspaces clean and
bug-free.
The appointment of Industar as sole agent came as
welcome news to director, Ad Klabbers, himself born and
raised in the Netherlands. Ad is no stranger to the UK, having
established a very successful company, 4 Cladding Services
15 years ago with fellow director Martyn Spence. Whilst 4
Cladding Services operates within the construction sector, Mr
Klabbers sees the Verhagen Leiden product range as both
complementary and a natural extension to his existing
business interests. He said:
Martyn Spence, Director of Industar with the Verhagen Leiden
F3313 Industrial and Turbo (T) model.
“Growing up in Holland, Verhagen Leiden is a household
name – so it is a great privilege to have been appointed by
the firm to spread the news about its product range here in
the UK.
“At a time when health and safety has never been more
important, this premium industrial vacuum range can be relied
on to address the needs of any company working with wood
or for that matter any materials that create dust.
“We are so convinced of the product’s performance and its
particular suitability for the woodworking sector that we will
provide a no obligation, free demonstration for interested
companies. We believe it is by far the best industrial vacuum
cleaner on the market today.”

ensures that a range of
sectors, including residential,
commercial and industrial
buildings, provide a healthy
environment to live and work
in. It also ensures land,
energy, water and other
resources are utilised
sustainably.
B & K Structures, suppliers

ensure that sustainability is at
the core of every aspect of
their business. Through the
use of timber technologies,
the number one renewable

are able to produce greener
buildings with lower carbon
footprints.
B & K Structures enhance
the sustainability of their
projects through offering
innovative hybrid frames that
combine glulam, cross

throughout the merchant
supply chain.
The BMF and GFTN-UK will
work together to bring about
better industry practices and
encourage a commitment to
sustainability in the merchant
sector.
GFTN-UK will share its
expertise and knowledge with
BMF members, helping them
to exercise due diligence on
their supply chains for forest

organisation provides a
framework that enables
companies to identify and
move away from materials
coming from unknown or

the room when they presented
to our Timber Forum last year.
Now we are working together
to make all members aware of
the damage caused to the
environment when they buy,
say, cheap plywood from
China, sourced from forests
that are not sustainable.”
Julia Young, Manager

Makita add new dust extractors
Makita is adding two new,
M-Class approved dust
extraction vacuum units to
its already extensive range
as the campaign for
improved dust
management, especially on
site and in the workshop,
takes construction industry
priority. In addition Makita
has introduced a dual
power extractor that can be
powered by mains or
battery and will be a very
useful cleaner for
maintenance teams.
The new Makita
VC2201MXI/VC2211MX1 M
class dust extractors bristle
with innovative features.
Powered by a 1,050 watt
motor, available in either 110v
or 240v mode, which delivers
a quiet 22.0 kPa maximum
suction with an air flow of 3.5
m³/min to pull material into the
22 litre stainless steel tank.
These extractors feature a
new automatic self-cleaning
filter system achieved by two
triple function filter units.
These are composed of a
powder filter, damper and pre-
filter which use a valve
system to redirect airflow
through each of the filters in
turn to release the collected
dust into the retainer. The
audible air flow sensor bleeps
a warning when the tank is full
or the pipe is blocked. The
Class M approval allows use
with mica, china clay,
gypsum, wood dust, masonry,
GRP and concrete.
Weighing just 16.3kg, and
with a useful 5 metre power
cord, a new design of chassis
includes large bumpers to
protect walls and cabinets
from travel damage whilst the
new castors have a lock to
stop the extractor moving
unintentionally during
operation. The flat top body
design allows stacking for
space-saving storage. The
240v extractor has a power
take-off connection to run a
power tool directly linked to
the extractor so the extractor
automatically starts –up when
the power tool is triggered.
The new Makita DVC861LZ
L-class extractor is operated
by both AC mains power and
DC batteries, using the twin
18V battery system that is
storming the construction and
outdoor power tool market
with its 36V performance.
This will prove invaluable in a
location where mains power is
not available. The new dry
material vacuum has a
1,050watt motor that will
generate 24 kPa maximum,
suction in mains mode, and a
useful 9 kPa suction when
powered by battery. Maximum
airflow is 3.6 m³/min and 2.1
m³/min respectively. Rated for
L class operations for plaster,
china clay and mica materials.
Suction into the 8 litre tank
can be varied by the dial on
the body front adjacent to the
large On/Off switch.
Commercial dust bags fit this
machine and the filters are
HEPA type.
If the batteries are in place
and at the same time the
mains cord is connected and
power available, the mains
power takes priority and an
indicator lamp shows when
AC power is operating. The
useful storage box on the top
of the machine, as well as the
power cord can be removed.
A 2.5metres suction hose is
provided together with long
lance and roller collector
head. Strong polymer
bumpers protect property and
the castors can be locked for
stability.

Weinig celebrates its sixth
25 year service award
einig UK After Sales
W
Administrator Tony
Hooper has just celebrated
25 years with the company,
and is the sixth employee
of Weinig UK to do so.
Over the last three years,
five employees in the Weinig
UK service department in
Abingdon have been
presented with their 25 year
service awards, and they
were joined by After Sales
Administrator Tony last
month.
The Weinig Group - the
leading technology and
machinery provider worldwide
for the solid wood and panel
processing industries - gives
its customers a ‘five star’
aftersales service and the
longevity and loyalty of its
staff says a lot about the
company and its service
philosophy.
Tony started his working life
at an automotive parts
packaging company but
family connections with other
Weinig employees led to a
position in the stores at
Weinig UK. This led on to the
essential support department
of spare parts and service.
“The biggest change over
the last 25 years has been
the advances in technology,”
says Tony. “Long gone are
the manuals for crosschecking parts. Telelex,
faxes, stand-alone computers
meant my role has evolved;
now I work with two screens,
and could use a third!” Tony
knows his numbers – vital in
the ever growing spare parts
sector. “The Weinig product
range is expanding, not to
mention the added products
as the Weinig Group of
companies continues to grow.
I deal directly with customers
as well as the agents, and we
are proactive and anticipate
customers’ needs whenever
we can.
“I enjoy my job and 25
years has gone fast! There is
no real secret - the company
is reliable, stable, growing,
and looks after us, and we
look after it and our
customers.”
Malcolm Cuthbertson,
managing director of Weinig
UK said, “For an employee to
commit 25 years to one
company is an impressive
achievement, but to have six
is extraordinary and
represents a wealth of
experience. Tony has my
personal congratulations and
I am sure this will be echoed
by many people in the
industry.”
Weinig gives service
backup its highest priority,
building an enviable
reputation, and believes that
Tony Hooper
service is the lifeblood of
woodworking manufacturers.
Customer service in Weinig is
not just a department; it is an
attitude. It guarantees prompt
service cover on its whole
range of solid wood
processing machinery - its
specialty.

IronmongeryDirect adds
revolutionary new timber
fixing to its range
ronmongeryDirect, the
Imail
UK’s largest online and
order supplier of
ironmongery products, has
introduced an innovative
new spiked timber fixing
product to its range,
designed to combat
common joinery problems.
The Joyner Bolt is a unique
fixing which has been
designed to overcome the
shortcomings of traditional
fixings, such as coach bolts
and threaded rods. The bolt
features an innovative square
head so that it cannot be
pulled through the wood as
the joint is tightened,
ensuring that the timber face
won’t be damaged.
In addition, it contains eight
integral spikes to immediately
grip and hold the timber. This
ensures the joint will not
become loose over time even
when it is inserted into a hole
that has been drilled too
large, therefore guaranteeing
an optimum and longer
lasting connection.
As it can be fitted with one
hand, the bolt is easy to use
and is the ideal solution for
tradespeople tasked with
connecting timber in difficult
to reach areas, such as in
floors, rafters and ceiling
joints The bolt, which is brand
new to the market, is priced
from just £9.40 per pack of 10
bolts.

fter 40 years in a joinery
A
partnership creating
bespoke windows & doors
in the Sheffield area, Bob
Crookes decided to go it
alone in 2010 and start a
new business with his son,
Lee.
With a wealth of experience
in the industry and also new
ideas from his son Lee, who
has been helping in his Dad’s
workshop since the age of 5,
Crookes & Son Traditional
Joinery is going from strength
to strength. They specialise in
sash windows, and also
manufacture custom made
windows, doors, stairs,
conservatories, even
orangeries. This year they are
expanding their workshop and
are already planning the
purchase of additional
machinery to increase
turnover and provide quicker
lead times.
Though keen to support his
Dad in the office Lee found it
hard to get to grips with the
quoting side of the business,
which used ‘knowledge’
stored in his Dad’s head and
‘approximate price per metre’
costs. Relying extensively on
his Dad still for pricing, Lee
knew that he needed a
solution for when his Dad
wanted to retire. Joinerysoft
were invited in to demonstrate
their Joinery Management
Software (JMS) and Lee

benefits with improved
accuracy and

“Quoting was time consuming
previously and I was
neglecting the workshop.” He
adds, “The demo gave me
confidence that once the
software was set up with our
prices, it would be easy,
accurate and speed up our
quoting process.”
With full support provided
by Joinerysoft, Lee was able
to set up most of the software
during the 2 day installation &
training period. Bob’s
experience also came in
useful to check pricing in the

was customised to their

the knowledgeability of the

Illegal timber can still
reach Europe 2 years
after EU Timber
Regulation created
Following a report
published by the European
Commission on 18th
February, which shows
that the EU Timber
Regulation is still not
being enforced effectively
in several EU countries a
full two and a half years
after it was introduced,
WWF is calling for stronger
action to halt the trade in
illegal timber.
The report also highlights
the fact that some categories
of wood-based products
imported into the EU are still
not covered by the EU
Timber Regulation. This
includes major groups of
products such as printed
materials , for example
books, magazines and
greeting cards, as well as
chairs and musical
instruments. WWF has long
advocated that both these
issues should be addressed
by the European
Commission.
Hendrikus van
Hensbergen, Forest Policy
and Trade Manager at WWFUK said: “This report clearly
shows that, even after more
than two years of the EU
Timber Regulation being in
place, European citizens still
run the risk of buying
products made of illegal
timber. If we seriously want
to stop the illegal timber
trade, we urgently need all
wooden products to be
covered by the Regulation.
We also need all 28 Member
states to implement the
Regulation effectively,
carrying out appropriate
checks on operators and
ensuring strong penalties for
those who flout it. The UK
must demonstrate its
commitment to halt
deforestation and eradicate
the illegal timber trade by
supporting efforts to improve
implementation at home and
abroad.”
The Commission’s report
follows a consultation in
2015, with stakeholders
across the EU, on the
effectiveness of the
Regulation. Several
concerns were raised
including the fact that there
had been a significant delay
in implementing the law by
some Member States. Lack
of resources for enforcing
the Regulation was identified
as a key concern, along with
the need to expand the
scope of the regulation, as it
currently covers only 41% of
wood-based products sold
within the EU (by value)
according to WWF's figures.
As part of our ongoing
campaign to tighten this
Regulation, WWF has
demonstrated that a broad
range of EU businesses [3],
including those from the
timber, paper, furniture, DIY
and construction sectors,
support its call to improve
the EU Timber Regulation.
67 companies from 10
countries and 7 trade
federations including the
European Timber Trade
Federation and its members
have signed up to our
statement calling for action.
The Commission will now
conduct an impact
assessment on options for
tackling these issues and,
based on this, propose
changes to the Regulation
over the coming months.

understanding. Ongoing
support after training has also
been good.”
Purchasing JMS just 12
months ago, Lee has
discovered many more
benefits than just improved
quoting! Bob is also happy
that he doesn’t have to get
involved in quoting anymore
and is now full time in the
workshop which he prefers.
All paperwork generated
from JMS continues the
professional image of
Crookes & Son, including:
quotes, confirmation of order,
supplier orders, cutting
sheets, delivery notes, glass
orders, and invoices.
Cashflow has been
improved with deposits now
requested with confirmation of
order, something which was
neglected before as too time
consuming. Glazing reports,
including diagrams of bars,
has improved ordering of
glass, and such is the
accuracy of JMS, that Lee is
able to order glass in advance
for time sensitive orders
which helps to decrease lead
times.
Lee says, “JMS has saved
me at least 50% of my time in
the office, and made the
workshop more efficient too.”
Lee says he is quoting more
now, and therefore spending
more time in the office, but
whereas the workshop would
previously grind to a halt
without supervision, now with
clearly laid out cutting sheets
from JMS, both the apprentice

and another new recruit can
get on with jobs. Lee
confirms, “The cutting sheets
give them the instructions
they need, it basically tells the
story of the job. It has given
them the confidence to cut
out, and complete the entire
job from start to finish.”
Customer feedback has
been very positive with the
introduction of JMS
quotations, especially from
builders who are able to use
the detailed diagrams and
clear quotes to explain to their
end customers what they are
getting for their money. As a
result of all the improvements
in the business, Lee says,
“Our profitability keeps
increasing year on year, and I
know that JMS has played a
part in that.” He says of
Joinerysoft, “They are a very
helpful company. The new
JMS Setup Wizard is brilliant
and walks you through setting
up the software step by step.
It is easy to visualise the
joinery as you set it up.” Lee
concludes, “JMS makes us
more professional and is easy
to use. It has made my
business much better!”

Cades saves the
day with Ecogate
elvin KBB, Scotland’s
K
leading manufacturer of
Kitchens, Vanity Furniture
and Wardrobe Doors, has
avoided the need to replace
its existing dust extraction
system, and significantly
reduced its electricity bills,
by retrofitting Ecogate®
energy-saving technology
from Cades Ltd.
Established in 1986, Kelvin
KBB employs more than 300
people at its modern 106,000
sq ft facility at Cumbernauld,
Glasgow, from where it
provides leading house
builders and developers with
an integrated capability in
design, manufacture and
installation of kitchens,
bedrooms and bathrooms.
Kelvin KBB is a long-
standing customer of Cades
Ltd and, when Cades were
appointed as an authorised
Ecogate® installer, they were
keen to explore the potential
of the acclaimed
computerised extraction
optimisation system. Kevin
Lumb, Facility & Maintenance
Manager at Kelvin KBB,
explains: “When the company
decided to invest in a new
Biesse ‘Stream’ edgebander,
we called in Steve Rhodes of
Cades to discuss the
changes in our dust
extraction requirements. The
existing dust extraction
system was installed a
number of years ago and
employs four main extraction
fans, with a total power rating
of 180kW. Adding the new
edgebander was going to
significantly exceed the
capacity of our existing
extraction system which
meant we were faced with the
prospect of having to
purchase a whole new
system.”
As is the case with most
workshops, the four fans had
been installed to run
continuously, at full load, all
day long. However, following
a thorough site survey and
energy appraisal, Cades
were able to determine the
extraction demand for every
single machine in the
workshop, and from this they
identified how the four fans
could be adjusted for volume
and duty cycle, with the aim
of lowering the average total
volume and, therefore,
reducing the overall power
consumption of the system.
Steve Rhodes, Sales
Director at Cades, says: “All

which automatically open and

fan is continually adjusted as
the individual machines come
on or off line. Retrofitting the
Ecogate® ‘extraction-ondemand’ system means that
the existing filter and fans can

Kevin Lumb adds:
“Installing Ecogate obviously
made sound business sense
and Cades’ engineers carried
out the work with little or no
disruption to production. We
now have a much more
efficient, automated
extraction system and, as
well as the economic
advantages, we are also
benefitting from having a very
much quieter workshop.”

Booming Barnsley business doubles
workforce through apprentice programme
family-run
manufacturing
A
company which has nearly
doubled its workforce over
the past six months is
setting its sights on
significant future growth
after calling on help from a
unique Sheffield City
Region scheme designed to
support growing
businesses.
Worsbrough-based Booths
Manufacturing was launched
by father and son team Derek
and Adam Booth in 2010 and
his Debbie and son Craig
quickly joined the fastgrowing business. Booths
currently produce a range of
more than 500 bespoke
wooden products for the
home which are distributed to
retailers across the UK. Faced with a bulging order
book and struggling to keep
up with demand, Derek
turned to the internet for help
where he discovered Skills
Made Easy, a unique
programme aimed at helping
businesses to overcome skills
shortages.
Skills Made Easy helped
Booths Manufacturing to
identify suitable candidates,
as well as helping to develop
a training framework to meet
the needs of business,
allowing the apprentices to
work towards a recognised
qualification. After
interviewing two potential
apprentices Derek was
unable to distinguish between
them, so he decided to do the
only thing which he thought
was fair and offered them
both a job!
Since joining the company
Sam Andrews (17) and

Jooren Bloomaerte (17) have
learned how to produce
products using CNC Routers
and precision laser cutting
equipment, used to create
intricate designs, as well as
spending time working
towards apprenticeship
qualifications in design.
The progress made by
Derek’s two apprentices gave
him the confidence to return
to Skills Made Easy after
deciding to further expand the
company’s apprenticeship
programme, with Cameron
Ramsden (17) also joining
the business. Although it’s still
relatively early days in the
careers of the three
apprentices, Derek believes

that all three apprentices are
already making a significant
contribution to the business.
Since appointing the
apprentices, Booths
Manufacturing has also
invested £25,000 in
purchasing additional CNC
Routing and laser cutting
machinery allowing the
company to continue its
expansion plans and expand
its existing range of products,
which ranges from bespoke
custom- built radiator covers
to cabinets and tables used
to house retro games
machines. Derek Booth, managing
director, Booths
Manufacturing said: “If
someone told me a year ago
that within just a few months
the company would have
doubled its workforce and
have launched its own
apprenticeship programme I
think I’d have laughed them
out of town! As a small familyrun business, recruiting
additional employees was a
big step for us even when it
came to employing members
of my family.
“The business has changed
a lot since Adam and I first
started trading; today we
produce a range of more than
500 different products which
are sold throughout the UK.
My wife Debbie joined to help
with the management of the
business and my other son
Craig also started working in
the company, but as orders
continued to increase I
realised that I was rapidly
running out of family
members to help grow the
business further!
“I have always liked the
idea of apprenticeships as I
thought it would give young
people a chance to build a
career with our business but I
wasn’t really sure what was
involved or indeed whether
our business was suitable
and after looking at a number
of different options I
contacted Skills Made Easy
for advice. They guided us
through the process which
proved to be much more
pain-free than I had
imagined.
“Although we only originally
planned to recruit one
apprentice, all three have
made a huge impact on our
business. They’ve added a
new dynamic, bringing with
them lots of energy and
enthusiasm and progressing
well in their new roles”.
Laura Hayfield, Programme
Manager at Skills Made Easy
said: “Skills Made Easy was
launched to help businesses
access the right help at the
time they need it the most.
The success Booth’s
Manufacturing has enjoyed
since it decided to launch its
own apprenticeship
programme last September is
an illustration of how
apprentices can make a
positive impact upon
businesses.
“Nationally, 70% of
businesses employing an
apprentice have reported
increased levels of
productivity after employing
an apprentice and Booth’s
success supports the truth to
this statistic; so much so the
company is recruiting a
further two apprentices.
“Since the Skills Made
Easy project was launched in
2013, we have helped over
2000 businesses to
overcome skills gaps in their
workforce and helped to
create new, skilled jobs within
the local economy. Our
unique and flexible approach
to apprenticeship recruitment
supports both businesses
and young individuals looking
to take the first step in their
career. Through our work with
Booth’s we were able to help
to grow their business whilst
offering four passionate
young people the chance to
take the first steps in their
chosen careers.”
A new website allowing
Booths’ full product range to
be purchased online is due to
be launched in February and
can be found at: www.
boothsmanufacturing.co.uk/
Skills Made Easy provides
a comprehensive range of
training and apprenticeship
advice to small and mediumsized businesses based
within the Sheffield City
Region.
The programme is
available at no costs to
companies in the region and
also helps businesses to
access government grants to
cover the costs of training.
