HEADLAM
2014: EDITION ONE
A GREAT TRADITION
OF FAMILY CELEBRATIONS
Welcome
It is often commented upon by our guests that
what makes the ‘Headlam experience’ stand out
that little bit more is the friendly and helpful team
of staff. You can have the greatest venue in the
world but without a dedicated and skilled team of
people it will be left seriously short. Good old
fashioned hospitality is what we aim to offer our
guests and the fact that the vast majority of our
employees are local is an added bonus as they have
a deep knowledge of the area as well as that
natural northern charm!
For 2014 we are also holding our accommodation
rates and will continue to offer our superb value
seasonal short break packages – Winter Warmer,
Spring Revival, Summer Special and Autumn Gold.
Full details of these can be found on our recently
updated website along with pretty much
everything else you might need to know about
Headlam Hall. It is an ever more competitive world
in hospitality and we always aim to offer excellent
value for money although we are not prepared to
compromise our standards. We are committed to
using good quality locally sourced ingredients in
our kitchens, maintaining our facilities to a high
and safe standard and providing a level of service
to ensure that our guests have an enjoyable and
relaxing time.
Keeping our facilities tip-top is a never ending
challenge but we continue to regard this as one of
our highest priorities with constant investment. As
well as the usual programme of bedroom
refurbishments we are also carrying out some refit work in the spa this year (it doesn’t seem long
at all since we built it!) and are refurbishing the
Stable Lounge (off the Edwardian Suite) including
a completely new glazed frontage in a more
contemporary style.
Headlam Herald 2014: Edition One
We are proud to have been the
venue of choice for so many
family celebrations over the
years. Christenings, birthdays,
anniversaries and weddings to
name but a few of the special
occasions that are enjoyed with
family and friends, leaving us
with life-long happy memories.
Headlam Hall provides a great
setting for such occasions;
magnificent reception rooms,
private dining rooms for both
large and small gatherings,
beautiful gardens and the
picturesque surrounding
countryside. Our kitchen team
enjoy an excellent reputation for
the quality of food they produce,
even for large numbers with
dietary requirements ranging
from children in highchairs to
great grandmas and grandpas!
The delightful Drawing Room is a
great favourite for many special
occasions with its elegant
Georgian decor and stunning

views over the main terrace and
lawn. It can accommodate up to
44 guests for a lunch or dinner
and its walls hold the sounds of
many happy occasions!
For smaller parties we have the
charming Victorian room located
next to the bar and the stylish
Olive room which is within the
new Orangery. Larger occasions
take place in the Edwardian Suite
which is just across the
courtyard from the main hall and
has its own bar, conservatory
fronted lounge and toilet
facilities. The main room itself
has a fabulous arched glass
ceiling to give a bright and airy
feeling (particularly nice on a
summer’s day) and with dividing
curtains it works equally well for
parties of 50-70 guests as it
does for 100 plus. This room
also has the option of dancing
with our in-house sound and
light system or it can
accommodate a live band to
really get the party going!

Just 3 miles away from
Headlam, in the village of
Hilton, is Leaside
Cheesmakers. Brian and Esme
Dedman started making
cheese in early 2012 and use
the cow’s milk supplied by a
farm situated only a mile
away. They then pasteurise it
and use it to produce a range
of hand-made cheeses
including: Teesdale Blue,
White Hilton and flavoured
curd cheeses.
Teesdale Blue received a ‘best
in class’ award at the Great
Yorkshire Show as well as a
Prince of Wales Award for
Outstanding Quality and along
with the White Hilton it is a
regular on the Headlam Hall
cheeseboard.
Head Chef, David Hunter, said
“It is a real bonus to have
such excellent cheeses made
literally down the road and
along with Cotherstone cheese
from near Barnard Castle, we
now have an impressive
offering from the local area”.
GOLF COURSE NEWS
As most of you will be aware,
Ben McGrattan was promoted to
the role of Head Greenkeeper in
the spring of 2013 and has done
a good job in keeping the course
in great condition with the help
of our Assistant Greenkeeper,
James Hyde.
Improve That Swing
Remember that our resident PGA Professional, Steven Carpenter, is
always available for tuition whether you need to fine tune your game,
sink more puts or are a complete beginner. Call in and see him for a
chat about a course of lessons. We also offer an ‘Improve Your Golf
Break’ which includes two nights DB&B, unlimited use of the course
and 3 ½ hours of tuition for £220 per person (based on two sharing).
Over the winter we have been
carrying out the usual
maintenance jobs and have also
replaced all of the artificial astroturf tee mats on the course.
Membership numbers are at a
record high at the moment and
we hope to have another
enjoyable year of club
competitions.

SPRING INTO A TEESDALE
SHORT BREAK, THERE’S
SO MUCH TO SEE & DO!
By Martin Evans
Nothing lifts the spirits more
than fresh air, stunning scenery
and great food and wine. Add in
tremendous natural and built
attractions and you’ll find that
Teesdale delivers every time. For
those contemplating a short
break or mini-holiday here at
Headlam Hall, there really is
something different to do each
day - from bustling market towns
to amazing attractions, and from
England’s largest waterfall to a
wonderful hidden French
Chateau!
The impressive Bowes Museum
in nearby Barnard Castle is
known to some as “The Versailles
of the North” and has some
wonderful artwork on display
this season, starting with an
exhibition in neon by Gavin Turk,
one of the most respected of
contemporary British artists.
Gavin’s work has been purchased
by celebrities including Charles
Saatchi, who later included Turk
in the infamous “Sensation”
exhibition at the Royal Academy.
A internationally renowned
painting to be displayed at The
Bowes, “Manet – The Execution
of Maximillian” is also expected
to be popular, and is on display
between 22nd March and 18th
May. It comes to The Bowes as
the first painting in the threeyear “Masterpiece Tour”, part of
the National Gallery’s
commitment to promote the
And continuing through to 11th
May is “Henry Poole & Co,
Founder of Savile Row, The Art of
Bespoke Tailoring”, an exhibition
which has really captured the
imagination of its visitors and
which celebrates the craft of
bespoke tailoring by Henry Poole
& Co, the company established in
1806 and which went on to
clothe many famous clientele
including Emperor Napoleon III
and Winston Churchill.
A trip to the Bowes Museum is
best combined with some
speciality shopping in Barnard
Castle, our nearby market town,
Raby Castle
and the town is famous for its
excellent independent shops,
especially those selling arts,
crafts and antiques. Our local
celebrity is tv antiques expert
David Harper, who has a shop in
“Barney” and regularly appears
on BBC’s Antiques Road Trip and
Bargain Hunt. And on the first
Saturday of every month, there’s
a traditional Farmers’ Market in
Barney which really shouldn’t be
missed.
This February sees Teesdale host
one of the great celebrations of
railway history, when the
Shildon-based visitor attraction
Locomotion (northern outpost of
the National Railway Museum)
welcomes “Mallard 75 – The
Great Goodbye”. Being held
between 15th and 23rd February,
this event is open to the public
free of charge, and sees Mallard
(holder of the steam locomotive
world speed record in 1938, at
Bowes Museum

wide an audience as possible.

an amazing 126mph) on show
with its five sister A4 class
locomotives, including one from
the USA and one from Canada,
for the very last time, before they
travel back overseas.
Year round, nearby Hamsterley
Forest provides couples and
families with plenty of “open air”
and is a great base for everything
from picnics to mountain-biking.
And with the Tour de France
coming near to Teesdale this
summer, we’re expecting more
guests to bring their bikes when
they stay at Headlam over the
coming months. Le Tour is
coming to Richmondshire, and
many of our guests like to make
a visit whilst they’re staying at
Headlam Hall to Richmond, the
lovely Dales market town which
is home to the Georgian Theatre
Royal and a host of other
attractions.
11
Turning north, finally, you can
enjoy a visit to our “newest old”
local attraction, Auckland
Castle, which, although standing
proudly as the palace of the
Prince Bishops of Durham for
over 900 years, has only recently
opened its doors to visitors. The
Castle was the seat of power in
the North East of England, and
after the Norman Conquest the
Bishop of Durham was granted
exceptional powers by the King,
allowing him to raise taxes, mint
coins and hold his own
parliaments, effectively making
the Bishop the second most
powerful man in the country!
From the beginning of April,
you’ll have the chance to visit
and tour this lovely building and
its grounds, now also home to
many important works of art by
Spanish master Francisco de
Zubaran.
