Dear Folks,
Ahhhh… Football season is upon us, which leads
to refrains of: “Are you blind Ref ?*@!?” Have you ever
screamed this from the upper deck or in front of your TV? How could he miss that call that is right in front of him? The
problem is that this usually amount to a complaint that we
are not getting our way! We all have seen calls completely
blown in sports, but I don’t think I have ever yelled at the TV

one key fact may change the entire meaning of events,
or relationships that we hold most dear. Even more so,
when we do not see the most serious matter for our eternal
lives: sin. Sin is often described as darkness in the soul,
so it makes sense that it would blind us. How can we see
in the dark? We need light to see clearly. Paul says to the
Ephesians: Brothers and Sisters: You were once in darkness,
but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of
light…” This is much of the work of Lent, opening our
eyes to the true light that illuminates the path to Heaven. Not only does Christ enable us to see, but then we in turn
become the light to the world living in darkness.
I know that my guardian angel is much more patient
when I fail to see my own sin. I don’t imagine him yelling at
me, “Father, are you blind!” Instead he kindly intercedes for
me, and obtains graces to open my eyes!

Running concurrently with the
3:15pm Fun Run—because running
is fun—registration for the cake
decorating contest opens at 2:45pm
and ends at 4pm. Judging will begin
at 4:15pm and—for those who still
have the energy to walk—the Cake
Walk itself begins at 4:30pm. The
cake decorating categories are:
Best Family Effort, Most Unique,
Prettiest Cake, and Most DeliciousLooking Cake and the winners will
receive genuine coin of the realm
(Scrip Cards). We would love to see
more of our parish partners who
may not necessarily have children in
the school, but who support us, take
part in the active community that is
Holy Cross Academy. No need to

The Gospel of Mark
Deacon Dick Delio is planning
a Biblical Theology class on the
Gospel of Mark starting Wednesday,
October 5 and continuing for 8
weeks. The discussion will focus on
understanding the gospel as well
as the theological meaning of the
gospel. If there is enough interest,
he will conduct a 7pm class, with
an option for a second class at
11:45am. Classes will be held in
the Parish Library. If you would

We hope to see all of you, our parish family, at
Holy Cross today (Sunday) for our annual Ice
Cream Social, Dance and Cake Walk. Our yearly
parish celebration allows us all to prepare for our
school feast day, the Feast of the Holy Cross, and
to begin this new year of learning and growing
together.

St. Mary Preschool opens on Tuesday. We will be
happy to have our youngest students with us so
that our school community will be complete!
At HCA, classes are hard at work. In Middle
School guidance, our students have created a
bulletin board, Be Your Selfie! In the spirit of our
holy patron, St. Francis de Sales, who teaches us
to “Be yourself and be that well,” we help our
students to discover their gifts and to use them
for the good of all those around them. Sixth grade
students are enjoying the new world of middle
school and lockers, and all our students are
happily discovering the new computers in our
technology lab. Our 2016-2017 school year is off
to a great start!

annual Marine Corps 10k to raise
funds for our Diocese of Arlington

New bowling league
All are welcome to join a nonsanctioned bowling league that will
meet at the AMF Fredericksburg
Lanes on Route 3. The league
is open to all parishioners of the
parish, their family, and friends. Four-person teams are forming
now and the cost is $16 per week,

In January, the Saint Mary
Adult Choir is making a
Pilgrimage to Rome to sing for
Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica and
other historic churches in Italy
and attend an audience with
the Holy Father. The Choir
will be asking for your prayer
intentions so they can carry
them on their pilgrimage and
pray for them daily.
SUPPORT—Because the Choir
is a ministry of Saint Mary
Parish, and one that relies for
its effectiveness on the largest
possible participation, it is
important for this undertaking
to encompass as much of the
Choir as is reasonably possible. The Saint Mary Choir is
engaged in a number of fundraising activities, including

Family Group, part of a worldwide fellowship for those
afflicted by someone else's
addiction, meetings will be hedl
on Thursdays at 7pm in the Fr.
Don Rooney Community Room.
As a 12 step program, help is
offered by sharing experiences,
strengths and hopes.
Anonymity and confidentiality
is respected and the message
of hope is carried throughout
the world to those affected
by the addiction of someone
near to the participants. This is
not a religious program but a
spiritual way of life.
This program is open to those
participants who know or have
known a feeling of desperation
concerning the addiction
problem of someone very dear
to them and are supported by
those who have travelled the
unhappy road and found the
answer with serenity and peace
