Yellowstone means different things to each of us.
Millions of years in the making, and nearly a century and a
half after it was designated as the world’s first national park,
Yellowstone continues to inspire and amaze us all.
Whether you are awed by half of the earth’s active geysers,
or are amazed when you catch a glimpse of the greatest
concentration of wildlife
in the lower 48 states,
Yellowstone gives all of us
a window into an untouched
America.
As you read through
the Yellowstone Park
Foundation’s fiscal year
2014 annual report, please
know that your support
has made the difference to
protect this world treasure.
Every time I am fortunate enough to
watch a grizzly bear and her cubs
emerge from their dens in the spring,
view the incredible power of the rivers
and streams, or experience the unique
thermal features and geysers, I am
awestruck.

“CAGEY CATS”
The Cougar Study
Yellowstone biologists have the inside track
on the Park’s elusive cougar population due
to new, sophisticated monitoring equipment.
By having the ability to trail these fascinating
felines, new discoveries were uncovered as to
how predator diversity affects the ecosystem.
This scientific research will be shared with
other national park wildlife managers.
Fascinating Facts:
• Cougars are Olympic gold medallevel swimmers, but prefer not to
get in the water.
• Unable to roar, cougars use
growls, screams and chirps to
communicate their fierceness.
• Possessing a vertical leap of 18
feet helps a cougar land in a tree
in one jump.

“THE COMEBACK KIDS”
The Native Fish
Conservation Program
In 2013, 300,000 non-native lake trout
were removed from Yellowstone Lake,
and the program is making an impact.
Scientific samplings are showing an
increasing number of young Yellowstone
cutthroat trout ­— good news that the
cutthroat may be recovering.

“GOT YOUR BACK”
Wildlife and Visitor
Safety Program
Yellowstone’s on-the-case rangers
responded to 921 bear-related traffic
jams. With YPF support, Yellowstone
Rangers conducted 1,651 wildlife
safety demonstrations for 25,750
visitors on topics such as safe food
storage, hiking in bear country, and
correct use of bear spray.

Canon U.S.A., Inc. made Old Faithful Geyser
accessible to anyone, anywhere, via a
webcam in 2008. This year Old Faithful
fans got an even more thrilling, immediate
view of their favorite thermal feature when
the webcam went to live stream and High
Definition, courtesy of Canon.
The most visited web page in the entire
National Park Service system, the site
clocks two million page views every year.
On average, there are more than 5,000
views per day.
The webcam captures approximately 5,840
Old Faithful eruptions each year.

“HIDE & SEEK”
The Archives Blitz
Project
Designed to protect historic collections at
Yellowstone’s Heritage and Research Center,
an innovative program is happening due to a
$106,000 grant YPF secured from the Council
on Library and Information Resources. Park
staff designed a process to catalog and
record a large portion of hidden collections
using volunteer archivists.

“HAPPY TRAILS”
Bechler Trail Removal
YPF funded the removal of several illegal
trails that had been deliberately created
along the Idaho boundary. These trails
were damaging portions of the Park and
were becoming a law enforcement issue
for Rangers. Trail crews spent three
weeks removing trails and laying down
tree barricades for closures to strongly
discourage users. The goal is to have
Park visitors use the legal access point at
the Bechler Ranger Station.
Fascinating Fact:
Yellowstone Rangers perform an average
of 50 search-and-rescue operations,
300 life flights, and 200 patient ground
transports each year.

“STOCK OPTIONS”
Adopt-A-Horse
Program
Adopt-a-Horse donors made a big
difference for Yellowstone’s rangers.
This year, six horses were added to their
herd of 110 horses and mules. These
incredible animals are tasked with duties
like backcountry patrolling, carrying gear
and assisting with rescue missions.

“OFF THE GRID”
The Lamar Buffalo
Ranch Project
Established in 1907 to preserve one of the last
free-roaming bison herds in the United States,
the historic Lamar Buffalo Ranch is destined
to become an innovative sustainability story.
The goal is to make the ranch a ZERO energy,
water and waste impact education and
research facility by mid-2015.
Several outstanding companies are
collaborating to make it happen. Preliminary
work occurred in this fiscal year. The first
phase was completed in fall 2014, and the
second phase will be wrapped up in spring
2015.
Some of the exciting features include:
refurbished Toyota Hybrid batteries that will
store electricity for the facility; upgraded
solar panels; new energy-efficient windows;
and a micro-hydro turbine that will harness
power from a nearby stream to produce heat
and hot water.

“ASK A RANGER”
Yellowstone to You
Rangers are the face of the Park at
community events in the states
surrounding Yellowstone, including tribal
areas, in this up-close and personal
program. The Rangers conduct on-site
classes about Yellowstone that engage
thousands of youth and their families
who are underserved, connect American
Indians to their ancestral lands, and
secure grants for hundreds of students
to participate.
Ranger Beth Taylor was awarded the 2014
Freeman Tilden Award for the Intermountain Region for outstanding work
in the field of interpretation. The award
notes her in-Park and outreach work
with Native American schools and
communities as well as her leadership of
the Distance Learning program.

Distance Learning
Because of the magic of video conferencing,
National Park Resource Education Rangers
directly connect with school groups around
the world. Every year, more than 10,500 kids
participate in 200 programs.

Expedition: Yellowstone! brings students
from 4th through 8th grades to the Park to
stay three or five nights to participate in a
curriculum-based program. To make sure
there are no barriers to taking part in this
Yellowstone adventure, the YPF scholarshipfund contributed $49,240 to help 20 schools
cover 45% of their fees this year.
