ovember is the time most of us focus and appreciate what we
have in life. At this time of year, many are counting their
blessings. It is also a perfect time to do some soul-searching and to put
oneself in another person’s shoes during a time that is not so perfect.
We are truly fortunate, and sometimes need a humbling experience
to remind us of that. Let us not question why things do not go as
planned; there is a reason for everything so have faith and live life...
Being Thankful
~ Author unknown
Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire.
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?
Be thankful when you don’t know something,
for it gives you the opportunity to learn.
Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.
Be thankful for your limitations,
Because they give you opportunities for improvement.
Be thankful for each new challenge,
Because it will build your strength and character.
Be thankful for your mistakes,
They will teach you valuable lessons.
Be thankful when you’re tired and weary,
Because it means you’ve made an effort.
It’s easy to be thankful for the good things.
A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks.
Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive.
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles, and they will become your blessings.
“Not what we say about our blessings,
but how we use them, is the true measure
of our thanksgiving.”

The Giving Tree has been a
Whitmore tradition for many years.
Our tree is designed to help Whitmore
families in need. Our tree will be set up
in the office after the Thanksgiving
break and will remain there until
Christmas break. If you are interested
in helping a family, please come into the
office and pull a tag from the tree,
then write your name down on the form
next to your tag number. On the tag,
it will have a number which will match a
corresponding child and a size. For example, 2A on one side and
girls 6x shirt on the other. You simply go out and purchase a
girls 6x shirt and return it unwrapped to the office or library
with your tag attached. The tree will be in the front office
on Monday, November 21st. If you have any questions regarding
The Giving Tree, please contact myself, Briona Mendes at
(209) 614-7755 or [email protected]

Dear family and friends of WCS,
Recently, Arya Flores, a student in Mrs. Tornquist’s
first grade class had been diagnosed with an
Arachnoid cyst. It was discovered when she had a
playground injury at school during early October.
There are often no symptoms that are shown by a
patient who has this type of cyst, so it was truly a
miracle it occurred when it had. She currently has a
cerebrospinal fluid-filled sac that is located mainly
on the left side of her brain.
On Friday, November 4, 2011, Arya began
treatment at the UCLA Medical Center. This has
required that her parents travel to and from their
home to Los Angeles to receive the necessary
treatments. By receiving treatment, her condition
will improve or be resolved.
WCS Booster Club and Mrs. Tornquist’s first grade
class had teamed up to hold a “Penny Drive” to help
with transportation and additional costs that may
arise while she is undergoing these procedures. Each
class had a bucket to store the money collected. It
started on Thursday, October 20, 2011 and ended on
Wednesday, November 2, 2011. This had helped
reduce the costs for this family who are loved dearly
here at Whitmore Charter!
With warmest thanks to all who
spared as much change as they could,

Congratulations Girls Volleyball 2011-2012!
by Mrs. Stiles, Volleyball Coach
I am so proud of my girls this year that came out for Volleyball. It
has been a memorable season in many ways. I love each and every one
of you girls. Eighth graders, I am so proud of the players you became.
You should be proud of what you accomplished. I hope you have
learned something this year that you will carry with you into high
school. For those sixth and seventh graders, I hope you are as proud
of yourself as I am. This was an amazing season that will probably only
happen once in your lifetimes. You guys were a bunch of
hard working determined young ladies. You learned a whole
lot this year and I could not of asked for a better group to
work with. You learned that it is ok to be confident in all
things and you proved that this season by having an
unforgettable season of 18 wins and 0 losses. You have
made me so proud!! Good Luck to all of you ladies, and
remember who you are and what you represent. You are
all amazing and I love you!

Fourth Grader Takes First!
Soldiers Far From Home Art Contest
by Mrs. Lloyd, Art Teacher / Beginning Teacher Mentor
Congratulations to Paige Janich from Ms. McNeal’s fourth
grade class for winning the elementary division of the
Soldiers Far From Home Art Contest! Fourth and first
graders made patriotic drawings for soldiers who are
stationed overseas for the holiday season. Paige’s drawing
won first place and she will be recognized and awarded a
ribbon and a prize by Senator Anthony Canella in Gustine
for her patriotism and artistic talent. We are very proud
of you Paige, and for the rest of the artists who took part
in the contest, please know that your drawings will warm
the hearts of troops in Afghanistan this month!

Third Grade Amazed and in Awe!

Third grade had a fantastic field trip on October 4 to the
Gallo Center of the Arts and Modesto Public Library. Our
students were able to see the show “Mathemagic,” in which they
learned that math can include special tricks that amaze the mind!
A special magician performed tricks that included math and even
discussed the history of some important math concepts. We had
a picnic lunch outside the theater. The students then had the
opportunity to visit the Modesto library where some of them even
received their first library card. Many of the students were able
to check out books to bring home and read with their family.
th
Color Me Mine visited Whitmore’s third
grade students on October 6th to design
ceramic plates. The students’ creativity
shined in creating original pieces with
stamps, sponges, and even hands! The plates had been offered to
third grade parents for a donation at the fall festival on October 28th.
Thank you to Sandra from Color Me Mine in Modesto, the parent
volunteers, and Mrs. Lloyd for your support in this awesome experience.

ART

We had our Donor’s Choose project funded last month that put
a few more digital drawing tablets in the digital art classes.
These tablets are used just like a pen and paper but the motions
of the pen are shown on the screen. It has made drawing in the
computer lab much easier for the K-5 students. The tablets are
pressure sensitive so the harder you press the darker the line.
We are so excited to use innovative tools like this at school.
Whitmore students are getting the same experience as digital
artists that are drawing the cartoons that the kids watch, and
design the advertisements we see on billboards and magazines.
Make sure to stop by our Artsonia art gallery to see the work
of all of our digital artists!

Amazing Vox Opera Duo
Amazes Students
by Mr. Hunn, Music Teacher
Whitmore students from Kindergarten to
eighth grade were treated to an educational
and inspirational assembly on October 17th
when Annalisa Winberg and Roy Stevens of
AmazingVox gave a presentation on opera and
the voice. Roy and Annalisa are a husband and wife team of
international opera singers. They have performed in twenty-two
countries, including Italy, Germany, and South Africa.
Their enthusiasm for opera billowed out
into the audience, making a musical style
that is unfamiliar to most students
interesting and exciting. Roy surprised
the audience with his powerful tenor voice,
and demonstrated the difference between
the voice of a pop singer and a well-trained
vocalist. Annalisa amazed the students with
her equally powerful and beautiful voice by
singing in a variety of languages.
Roy and Annalisa spent the rest of the day in follow-up
sessions to expound on the information from the assembly, and
to give students a chance to ask questions. The students were
eager to listen to the duo speak of their experiences and hear
more about the interesting stories told in operas. At one point,
Mr. Hunn challenged Roy to a contest to see who could make a
sound longer. Mr. Hunn was armed with a bugle, while Roy had
only his voice. When the contest ended, Mr. Hunn was gasping for
air as Roy continued to sing!
Roy and Annalisa are also the parents of Carolyn Stevens, a
student at Whitmore Charter High School. To show their thanks
for all of the opportunities Carolyn has had at our school, they
chose to donate their time for this wonderful assembly. We
would like to thank them for their generosity, and look forward
to having them back soon.
WCSAT’s Got Talent!
by Mrs. Lloyd
We had a great turn out for auditions this year for the annual talent show. The panel of judges were faced
with the challenge of choosing only 20 acts to fit into our hour slot. Is there such thing as too much talent? We
think not! This year’s show featured singing, acting, dancing, instrumental pieces, a roping act, puppeteering
and much, much more, all captured for your enjoyment. DVD’s will be available to purchase in the new year!
Our talent show was on Friday, November 17 th. The times had changed from the student calendar with the
first show at 12:30PM for middle school and the second show at 2:15PM for grades K-5.
