Principal`s Letter Term 3 - Yio Chu Kang Secondary School
YIO CHU KANG SECONDARY SCHOOL
YCKSS/2016/T3/021
8 July 2016
Dear Parents/ Guardian
Greetings from Yio Chu Kang Secondary School!
Thank you for journeying together with us in Semester 1. We hope you and your family would
have spent some quality time during the school holidays to interact and bond as a family. As was
mentioned in my previous letters, this year, the school’s theme is “As a community, we leave a
legacy”. In Term 1, we focused on Honouring Legacies, in Term 2 we focused on Receiving
Legacies. This term, we will look at Building Legacies. At the school assembly on 1 July, I shared
that in building legacies, it is important that we understand the past, appreciate the present and
prepare for the future. We must be able to articulate what legacies we want to build and the
purpose why we are building these legacies. The legacies that we build should be life-giving.
Students were challenged to take one action that would enable them to fulfil the legacies that
they want to build.
Strategic Thrusts
Strategic Thrust 1: Holistic Education
You would have heard from your child/ward that they were engaged during the ACTive Learning
Week at the end of Term 2 when, as a school, the students experienced cohort-specific
programmes including
 workshops on Science, cyberwellness and leadership as well as experiencing mySG Trail
for Sec 1 students
 learning journeys to local tourist attractions as part of their Inquiry-Based Learning
Experience for Sec 2 students
 Polytechnic Experience or job attachment for Sec 3 students
 lessons in preparation for the national examination for Sec 4N, 4E5N students.
As a follow-up of the mid-year examination, the school has started structured remedial classes
for Sec 1 to 3 students who need the additional support to build a stronger foundation so as to
ensure they achieve their academic goals. In addition to the value-added programme, the school
has implemented a structured EL and MTL oral examination practice for the graduating cohort in
preparation for the oral examination this term.
Other than the school library, our students can use the newly-set up study corner on the fourth
level of the main block. We hope that the new facility can provide a conducive environment for
students to do self-study and/or to consult with their teachers after school.
At YCKSS, we believe in enhancing our students' experience by providing strategic platforms to
share their gift in the performing arts with the community. Our choir successfully completed
their public performance at the Esplanade on 21 March. Our Symphonic Band, together with
Dunman High School Band, performed at Dhoby Ghaut Green on 4 June. We would like to thank
parents for supporting these events.

YIO CHU KANG SECONDARY SCHOOL
Our students have been involved in the Singapore Youth Festival fiftieth year celebrations.
Dang Thanh Hien, Lochingcharit Jirapinya and Muhammad Nur Fadzhil Bin Adnan performed at
Youth Got Talent @ *SCAPE located at Orchard Road and Youth Station @ Esplanade Library. The
former is a showcase of diverse youth creative talents while the latter is a platform showcasing
original song compositions by aspiring student singer-songwriters. Haw Jia Jun's Cycle of Life has
been curated in the SYF 2016 Art Exhibition entitled "Artist and Space" at The Arts House till 10
July. As part of a combined percussion group, kompang players from YCKSS and Chong Boon
Secondary School will be welcoming the Guest-of-Honour at the SYF Celebrations @ Causeway
Point on 9 July at 4.30pm. Our choir, together with two other N6 Cluster schools, will perform
the finale item in a flash mob. Our NCDCC will be participating in the Uniform Groups Carnival at
Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza from 8 to 10 July. Do join us at the various events this weekend.
Our students who had the privilege to participate in our twinning programme with Yinzhou
Experimental Middle School in Ningbo, China, from 30 May to 3 June will play host in early
August to students from Youngil High School in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
Strategic Thrust 2: A Caring and Learning Staff Culture
As part of our teachers’ professional development in Semester 1, we focused on developing their
competency in Assessment Literacy. The conversation on assessment will continue in Semester 2
at departmental level so that our teachers will be equipped to teach effectively. In addition, our
English Teachers will embark on “Getting students Hooked on Books: Extensive Reading
Programme” by a Master Teacher from the English Language Institute of Singapore.
Strategic Thrust 3: Strong Partnerships
Our School Advisory Committee (SAC) has been very supportive of our programmes. It is through
their generous support that many school programmes including our Lifelong Learning
Programme: Character Development through Arts, Media and Design benefit our students. Their
presence at the Limelight Concert and Speech Day is a testimony to their commitment. We
would like to thank Mr Homer Tan, our SAC Chairman and Chairman of the Tan Ean Kiam
Foundation, for gracing our Speech Day and opening the refurbished YCKSS Heritage Gallery.
Parents play a critical role in our students’ development.
We would like to thank our Parents Support Group for their enthusiastic participation at various
events in Term 2 including the MTL Fortnight Programme, the Student Leadership Lecture Series
and Investiture, the Health Fiesta and Sports Carnival and our 51st Speech Day.
We are also encouraged by parents who made time to conference with our teaching staff on 27
May. It was a fruitful time of discussion on how we can work together to journey forward. Do
continue to look into the well-being of your child/ward and monitor him/her at home to ensure
that homework is completed and regular revision is done. We would like our students to grow
into wholesome adults, taking responsibility for their decisions and actions, ready to serve
society with a sincere heart.
