Where’s Matt
Tonight’s bobblehead giveaway is unique – primarily because Matt Caruana isn’t here. A strange
twist of fate, to be sure. At the beginning of the season, the rookie center out of Niagara University
was penciled in as one of eight players assigned to the Condors from the Anaheim Ducks AHL affiliate, the Iowa Chops. And it didn’t take long for fans to notice Matt.
In fact, he was one of two rookie ‘Matts’ in the Bakersfield lineup that quickly made a name for
themselves, as both he and Matt Pope were off to a fast start lighting it up in their pro careers. They
are both in the AHL for now, and Pope missed his giveaway night last weekend, as well, with Youth
Replica Jersey Night.
Before turning pro, Caruana was a steady player at Niagara, putting up double digits in goals in
three of his four seasons. He finished in the Top 5 in points in his conference as a sophomore, junior
and senior. Signed by the Ducks to an American Hockey League contract last season, after finishing
up his college career, Caruana suited up in five regular season games with their AHL affiliate, then
the Portland Pirates. There he played for Head Coach Kevin Dineen, who sniped over 300 goals
and racked up over 2,200 penalty minutes in his NHL career before getting behind the behind the
bench. Caruana also saw action in 13 Calder Cup Playoff games, as well.
He was sent to Bakersfield last October to start his first full professional campaign, but the last game
he played for the Condors was back on November 29th against the Idaho Steelheads. By that point,
he had 10 goals and 14 points in 18 ECHL games, ranked among rookie leaders in the league in
scoring, and tied for fourth among all ECHL rookies in goals. He had three multi-goal games in his
Condors career, and scored at least one goal in four of his first five games of the season.
On December 1st, he was called up by Iowa and we haven’t seen him since. He has played 39
games with the Chops, putting up 5g-6a-11pts in the AHL.
“It’s a little weird looking at yourself on a bobblehead,” said Matt, on the phone from Iowa. “It’s
funny. I’m seeing the picture all over the website and looking at in press releases and it’s kind of
strange. The hair looks a little reddish, but overall I think they did a good job.”
Matt did a good job, too, while he was here.
“I’ve said it before, that I had a great time when I was there in Bakersfield. I wish I could be there
for my bobblehead night, but at the same time things have gone pretty good for me this season, and
we have a battle up here for the playoffs, too. But it’s definitely a pretty cool honor to be made into
a bobblehead.”
