OOPS!
Due to an undetected glitch in our database software, last issue’s list of
donors to the Catholic Central Capital Campaign contained multiple
errors in the class years shown for alumni. We sincerely apologize for the
confusion and hope you will forgive us. The corrected list will continue in
the next “Aluminator.”
LIVE & DIE FOR CC HIGH
The Ground Breaks… For A New Home In Novi
G
roundbreaking for Catholic Central’s new home on
Wixom Road in Novi was held Sept. 7, 2003. Among
the many guests, from the Archdiocese of Detroit, were:
Auxiliary Bishop John Quinn, Sr. Frances Nadolny, O.P.,
Director of the Department of Education and Sr. Mary
Gehringer, O.S.M., Superintendent of the Department
of Education. Several dignitaries were also present,
including U.S. Congressman Thaddeus McCotter ’83;
State Sen. Nancy Cassis; and several members of the
Novi City Council and administration.
The new School building is
designed around wetlands,
which are part of the 60-acre
property.
The Mothers’ Club also took
part and prepared the afterglow, while the Dads’ Club
coordinated parking and
traffic flow. The CC Pep
Band, under the direction of
Greg Normandin ’78, provided
the music. Thanks go out to
Janice Sharkey, members of
Fr. Richard Elmer provided
the Student Council, Kevin
an update on the Campaign.
Walters, Gary Zalewski, and
Ed Turek ’85, Chairman for
this event. Thanks also to Fr. Elmer, who spends
countless hours on the Campaign. Numerous
meetings in many places and many lunches
were held to pull it all together.
The Hon. Judge James Ryan ’50, Master of Ceremonies,
welcomed the guests. Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B., ’46,
President of CC, spoke briefly, and included an update
on the Campaign Project. Mayor Richard Clark of
Novi welcomed CC to the city, and said Catholic
Central’s anticipated move will be an historic day –
“the realization of a dream.”
The donors of CC’s new homesite, Frank and
Coleen Pellerito, received a warm welcome,
as did Auxiliary Bishop John M. Quinn
(former Director of the Archdiocesan
Department of Education), who gave
thanks for all the Basilians serving in the
archdiocese.
If you wish to help, your contributions will
still be happily accepted. More funds are
needed to keep the Football/Track Stadium
on target. One of the ways that you can get
involved is by being recognized as a contributor of the Fifth Founder’s Society – named
after the future fifth site of Catholic Central in Novi.
Previous sites include Harper Avenue, Belmont
Avenue, West Outer Drive and Breakfast Drive.
Afterward, the property was blessed by
Bishop Quinn and Fr. Richard Ranalletti, C.S.B.,
Principal of Catholic Central. They, along with nearly
800 alumni, teachers, parents, students and friends,
sang the Alma Mater after the groundbreaking.

Archdiocese of Detroit, and John Donovan ’04, Senior Class President.

The Fifth Founder’s Society has been established as
the vehicle for the Basilians to say “Thank You” in a
meaningful way. The support of so many deserves
special recognition on the new Campus, including
the area dedicated to Mary Alma Mater. A beautiful
Marian Garden will be constructed and will serve as
the focal point of CC’s new “home,” and will be a
place to make prayerful visits. Within the grotto, there
will be five benches, each commemorating the five
locales of the School. Around these benches will
be personalized bricks honoring the
alumni, parents and
ng
friends.

ALUMNI
A S S O C I AT I O N
Saturday, October 4th, some fifty (50) of your classmates,
many with their significant others, as well as invited CC
guests, the total numbering about 86 people, celebrated
the 45th anniversary of our graduation from ole CC.
Just to broaden the picture of how we celebrated,
let me say that we had eighteen (18) souls brave the
uncharacteristically cold October winds to play a
round of golf. We had forty (40) who participated in
the Eucharist with Fr. “Ned” Donoher, C.S.B., CC’s
Senior Statesman as the Celebrant, and Fr. Marvin
LaBute, C.S.B., Editor of the “Aluminator” and
Superior of the local Basilian House as the Concelebrant.
After an enriching service and a wonderful homily in
which Fr. Donoher spoke of his memories of the Class
of ’58, we presented him with a remnant of the stained
glass from the north wall of the Outer Drive Chapel.
The Chapel was demolished this past spring, but
before that happened, we retrieved the stained
glass walls for possible future use at the new CC
to be built in Novi. Fr. Richard Elmer ’46 will also
receive a remnant of that same wall.
Shown presenting a framed remnant of the original
stained glass from the North wall of the Outer Drive
Chapel to Fr. Ned Donoher are Terry Brady ’58 (left) and
Jerry Belian ’58 (right).
speaking for Fr. Elmer who could not join us, asking
us to continue to support the School and assist in the
funding of the new CC, which has been successful so
far; an update by John Argenta of what is planned for
CC’s new Campus, which looks great; and a humoristic
commentary by Ed Moylan ’58 on what the Class of
’58 has been up to based on the information received
from the class responses to the questionnaire that was
mailed with the invitations.
After cocktails in an adjacent room decorated with
display boards depicting the design of the new school
(designed by John Argenta ’58), and dinner in the
ballroom, the program included an overview by Fr.
Marvin LaBute of CC’s students’ scholastic endeavors,
which are outstanding; comments by Bob Santello ’58,
CC’s Athletic Director for the past 28 years, on CC’s
students’ athletic successes, which are numerous;
encouragement by Dan Collins ’84 (son of Dan Collins ’57),
We took pictures, shared events of the past, and, all
in all, had a fine reunion. Again I say, we missed you,
and we hope and pray for your health and well-being,
and look forward to getting the CC Class of ’58 together
again for our 50th Reunion in the fall of 2008.

50th Reunion Weekend - Class Of ’53
T
he 50th Reunion Weekend proved to be the best
attended of all the Reunions of the Class of 1953.
Each classmate received an engraved paperweight
globe as a souvenir and remembrance of the 50th
Reunion Celebration. The classmates who live in the
area will be continuing their semi-annual luncheons.
If you are interested in attending, please contact Jack
Cavellier at 248-879-8146.
The anniversary weekend began Friday, Sept. 26, with
a Stag Party (see photo) hosted by Catholic Central
and held at the School complete with refreshments
and a buffet dinner.
Members of the Planning Committee for the 50th
Reunion Weekend Celebration were Joe Binno, Jack
Cavellier, Jerry Dywasuk, Mike Farrug, Dick Herbert,
Mike Hilber, John Kelly, Dick Pazin and Russ
Quaine. Their efforts yielded some terrific results that
will be hard to beat at our 50th Reunion in 2008!
The Saturday Celebration (Main Event) was held at
the Edgewood Country Club beginning with Mass
offered by classmates Fr. Robert Duggan, C.S.B., Fr.
James Gaunt, C.S.B. and Deacon Gordon Rose.
Thanks to John Kelly, Master of Ceremonies, who
recognized all those who made the effort to attend the
reunion by traveling great distances to be part of the festivities. At the Reunion, Fr. Richard Elmer ’46 presented
an update regarding the progress of the new School.
Again, we want to remind you to keep Jim Barson
and Joe Binno in your prayers. Godspeed to all and
we hope to see you in 2008. ■

Calling All Chairs!
CC
is looking for graduates from the following classes
to help chair reunions: 1944, 1949, 1954, 1959, 1964,

75-Year-Old Shamrocks
LONG LIVE THE BASILIANS
Dateline Detroit 1928 – The roaring ’20s are fading and
the Great Depression is on the horizon – soon to be
triggered by the stock market crash of 1929.
And through it all, the Basilians have been there educating and
mentoring young men at Catholic Central for 75 years. The
more things change, the more they remain the same.
“A few good men” in black cars, black robes and white
collars converge on Holy Rosary Parish and establish
Detroit Catholic Central all boys high school.
From Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington,
Benny Goodman and Brubeck.
From Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Gershwin, and Rodgers
and Hammerstein.
From Elvis, the Four Tops, the Supremes, Bob Dylan,
the Rolling Stones, Bob Seger and Eminem
To Catholic Central’s band of renown under maestros
Bill Watts and Greg Normandin.
From their humble start at the corner of Harper and
Woodward Avenue to this year’s groundbreaking in Novi
for the new high school, the Basilian priests have been
teaching Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge for 75
years at Catholic Central High School – a.k.a., The
Shamrocks.
From ragtime and swing and show tunes
To bebop, rock, doowop, Kid Rock and hip hop.
Who are the Basilians…???
And through it all, the Basilians have been there educating and
mentoring young men at Catholic Central. The more things
change, the more they remain the same.
They are educators and mentors of young men. Let’s
take a moment (a long overdue moment) to acknowledge
the Basilian priests at Catholic Central High School. Let
me share with you a collage of the Basilians’ presence
at Catholic Central over the last 75 years – from 1928
to the present.
From rolling cross-country trains to a man on the moon.
From Charles Lindbergh’s solo transatlantic flight to
Paris on the Concorde in three hours.
From the golden age of radio to Howdy Doody and
Milton Berle on a black and white TV and now 100
channels of cable.
From manual typewriters to laptop computers.
From Roosevelt’s “New Deal” to Reagan’s Star Wars.
From Steinbeck’s “Grapes of Wrath” to Mitch Albom’s
“Tuesdays With Morrie.”
The more things change, the more they remain the same.
From the Great Depression and the dust bowl to Boys
Town and the Boys’ Bowl.
From Henry Ford’s Highland Park Assembly line at
$1.00 a day to websites, NASDAQ and multimilliondollar contracts.
And through it all, the Basilians have been there educating and
mentoring young men at Catholic Central including my own
father in 1929 and my son in the 1980s. The more things
change, the more they remain the same.
And through it all, the Basilians have been there educating and
mentoring young men at Catholic Central for 75 years. The
more things change, the more they remain the same.
From the rise and fall of the 3rd Reich.
From VE day and VJ day.
From Harper Avenue and then on to Belmont
and Woodward.
From the post-WWII building boom and the
Korean Conflict
To Jack Kerouac, the beat generation and
“6565 W. Outer Drive.”
From championships on every athletic field
To National Quiz Bowl championships and Merit Scholars.
From the lean years to the dynasty years.
One generation passes to another. From one decade
to another, one century to another, and one millennium
to another.
Through six popes from Pius XI through John Paul II.
And 18 principals from Father Daniel Dillon through
Father Richard Ranalletti.
From gunshots on a tragic November day in Dallas in
1963 and on to Lyndon Johnson and Vietnam and Napalm
To Breakfast Drive and portable classrooms bursting
at the seams.
From the tintinnabulation of the recess bell
To the thud thud thud of collisions on the football field.
14
From the cadence count and melodious strains of the
marching band
To the razor-edge stop and go’s in the hockey arena.
I open my eyes and I see
Father Richard Elmer, Father “Tunney” Hathaway,
Father Ned Donoher, Father John Menner, Father John
Wheeler, Father William Stoba, Father Frank Bredeweg,
Father Ray Paramo, Father Mike Buentello, Father
Marvin LaBute, Father Ron Cullen, and now running a
very successful Holy Redeemer High School Father Joe
Redican and Father Dennis Noelke.
From the bang bang of the Shamrock double play.
From the bounding bounding ball on the basketball courts
To the superhuman exertion in the boxing and
wrestling rings and track events,
There’s always been a Basilian teaching the fundamentals
or working nearby.
The sacrifice – a Basilian vocation for a young man’s education.
The very foundation of Christian belief.
One life given for another.
I close my eyes and I see
Father Gerard French, Father James Martin, Father
Bernard Regan, Father Wilfrid Kehoe, Father Austin
Brown, Father Leo Klosterman, Father Gerard Todd,
Father Joe Barnes, Father James Enright, Father Frank
Kelly, Father Joe Miller, Father Cy Bergeron, Father
Canning Harrison, Father Paul Donoher and Catholic
Central Legend Father Norbert Clemens and even
Basilian surrogate Doc John Ronayne.
Generation after generation of young men
Sent through the revolving door of “Goodness,
Discipline and Knowledge.”
Enter – a fragile, insecure and timid 14-year-old adolescent.
Exit four years later – a strong, self-confident young
man ready to take on the world.
Tomorrow’s leader.
Thanks to the Basilian tradition.
Teaching
Coaching
Mentoring
Or cutting the grass on the back forty.
The more things change, the more they remain the same.
Happy 75th Catholic Central.
Long Live the Basilians.

SCHOOL
BELLS
hen it came
time this fall to
write the traditional
essay about “What I did
on my summer vacation,”
Catholic Central English teacher
Gene Grewe had a leg up on his students. Grewe
and his wife Barb spent their summer working at
an American school in the Swiss Alps.
I expected.” said
Grewe “I was all
caught up in the
finish to an exciting
Track season and trying to
wrap up grades for the school year,
and Sloman’s call caught me off guard.” Even more
surprising was the offer: Sloman wanted Grewe to be
the school’s Discipline Coordinator. “It was a natural
for Barb to be the School Nurse,” Grewe observed.
“She has taught Nursing at Schoolcraft College for
over twenty years, and has worked at both Henry
Ford Hospital and St. Mary Mercy Hospital.” But
Grewe, who had been Dean of Students at Bishop
Borgess High School from
1981-1992, thought a teaching job
would be more likely for him.
“Tim said they needed a Discipline
Coordinator and had seen my
Borgess experience on my
resume, and after a 40-minute
phone interview, he offered me
the job,” Grewe explained. After that it was just a
whirlwind. Neither of the Grewes had ever been
out of the country except to Canada, so they were
in a rush to get passports, airline tickets, criminal
background checks, etc. “I had to report for a week
of orientation on June 19th so there was not much
time, but the opportunity was too good to pass up,
so we decided to go for it,” said Grewe. There was
one more complication. The Grewe’s daughter
Melissa (married to CC grad Sean McManamy ’90)
It was merely by chance that the opportunity came
about. Barb and Gene had sent a resume to the Leysin
American School in Leysin, Switzerland, almost on
a whim. They had heard about the school through
friends of their daughters. These
friends are teachers there during
the school year and the Grewes sent
in resumes, thinking that it might
be fun to teach there during the
school year after they retire.
Although the school year staff offered
no prospects, the Grewes were
surprised when Summer in Switzerland Director,
Tim Sloman, called them unexpectedly on Memorial
Day weekend. The Summer in Switzerland program
is a combination of school and camp in a residential
environment, using the facilities of the Leysin
American School. Students take classes in the morning,
participate in athletic activities in the afternoon,
and social activities in the evening. On weekends,
students and staff take day trips exploring cities and
sights around Switzerland. “It was the last thing

was the experience of a lifetime. “We had an unforgettable
summer,” Grewe declared. “The outstanding staff,
the breathtaking scenery, the interesting international
student body, the whole experience could never be
topped – except by the arrival of Lily
Vaughan McManamy on July 9th.” So if
you ask Barb or Gene Grewe what they
did on their summer vacation, well, be
prepared for a very long answer! ■
SCHOOL
was expecting a baby late in June
and Barb hoped to be there for the
birth. Sloman agreed to waive
her week of orientation so she
could spend some time with her
daughter. Seven weeks later, the Grewes returned
home just days before CC started school again. In
between they had met, nursed, and disciplined over
300 high-school-aged students from all over the world.
The Grewes visited Gruyere, Lucerne, Montreux,
Geneva, and Zermott as well as going to places like
Aqua Park, the Cailler chocolate
factory, and the Olympic Museum
in Lausanne. They had very little
time off, but did manage a weekend getaway on their own to Paris,
to celebrate their 33rd wedding
anniversary. Both Grewes agree it

Spirit Award Named In Fr. Donoher’s Honor
By John Zick ’04
A
t this year’s first assembly, students
and faculty greeted the beginning of a
new tradition with a standing ovation
as Fr. Ned Donoher, C.S.B., accepted
a new award named in his honor.
Fr. Donoher would be the last person to
admit it, but no one is more deserving of
such an honor. For the last 53 years, he
has truly demonstrated what our School
is all about. Never seeking attention
or recognition, he has led by example
in the areas of spirit and commitment.
Whether by praying the Rosary at
Football games or leading the School
in singing the Alma Mater, Fr. Donoher
has always been there to lead CC.
SCHOOL
BELLS
The Fr. Ned Donoher Spirit Award will
be presented annually to the class that
best displays the enthusiasm and school
spirit personified by its namesake. The
purpose of the award is twofold: to
promote an increase in spirit and to pay tribute
to the man who has been a driving force behind
CC spirit for more than half
a century.
g
During his stay here, Fr. Donoher’s name has become
synonymous with that of CC. He is already a living
legend: the award will ensure that future classes
never forget his contributions. ■

The Brothers’ Club
T
he CC Brothers’ Club, in its first year of existence,

Senior Class President John Donovan said some
initial problems with the Brothers’ Club are that
“some people aren’t buying into the system right
away, and some don’t even know what it’s all about.”
Perhaps students need to know more about the
club before they can appreciate what it has to offer.
When asked what he expects of the Brothers’ Club,
Maurizio DiGiandomenico ’04 said, “to unite
the students and help get people more involved
in their School.”
The Big Brother Program, which was started Aug. 29,
has already met this expectation by introducing
Freshmen to the School through the guidance of
Seniors and Junior partners (Big Brothers).
explained, “Each team is represented in the BC through
a chosen representative. These representatives in turn
meet with the Chairmen of either the clubs or the
Sports Committee.”
The Brothers’ Club has good intentions in reuniting
the CC Community, but the club should not be taken
for granted. ”The Brothers’ Club can only succeed if
the students believe in it,” added Baumgartner.
Club moderator Mr. Bill Hayes said, “It will last and
forever be part of the CC tradition.”
Even Maurizio, a Senior Class officer and a key
organizer in the club, explained the club’s survival
does not depend on any one student: “If this club is
to last, it is not up to me but up to the student body.”
“Gaining respect for each other and a better understanding of what the School stands for is what this
program is all about,” Hayes concluded. ■

so that not one single student is forgotten about.”
