Talented Seahorses roll in opener
A hard-hitting Christchurch
School squad thumped the visiting Gators of Greenbrier Christian Academy 42-0 on Saturday.
Christchurch amassed 319
yards in offense and forced four
Gator interceptions. The entire
Christchurch community was
on hand as part of the school’s
bonding weekend to cheer the
Fighting Seahorses on in their
season-opening victory.
On defense, the Horses were
led in the first half by junior
J’Courtney Williams (Danville).
In just the first 24 minutes Williams tallied 6 tackles, 2 sacks,
an interception and a safety. Due
to a minor injury, Williams did
not play in the second half.
Other standouts on defense
were senior middle linebacker
and tri-captain Andy Wilson
(Colonial Beach) and senior
defensive back Kevin Anderson
(Washington, D.C.). Both made
9 tackles and each had an interception.
A real break-out performance
was turned in by junior Tavon
Wiggins (Baltimore, Md.). Wiggins had 4 tackles, intercepted a
pass, and scored his first TD as
a receiver.
Nineteen different members of
coach Ken Michelsen’s defense
assisted on tackles during Saturday’s rout.
The offense was in high gear
from the outset as junior QB
Dustin Nelson (Fayetteville,
N.C.) completed 5 of 8 passes for
149 yards, 4 touchdowns and no
interceptions.
Senior Delvon Ruffin (Water
View) led the rushing attack
with 100 yards on 13 carries.
Right behind him was tri-captain
Randy Hammond (Washington,
D.C.), who had 90 yards on 9
carries. Fullback and tri-captain
Moon Robinson, also of D.C.,
added 72 yards on 6 carries.
The scoring began with the
Horses’ first play from scrimmage. Just as he did on the first
play of the season against the
very same team a year ago, Kevin
Anderson raced past defenders on
a fade route and hauled in a 40yard bomb from Nelson. Moon
Robinson ran the conversion for
two points.
On the very next offensive
series, Nelson hit Anderson
again. This time, the distance
was 60 yards and through double
coverage.
Randy Hammond was the
next Seahorse in the end zone.
He took a handoff from Nelson
straight through the Gator line for
a four-yard score. Hammond’s
10 yards per carry average were
a great complement to Ruffin’s
acrobatic runs and Robinson’s
quick shots up the middle.
J’Courtney Williams was
next into the end zone for the
defensive line. They made sure
there were holes to get through
and protection for Nelson to pass.
Homer attributed the success
on Saturday to great team work.
“Our line executed very well
against a big, tough team. We
asked the kids to play for each
other for 48 full minutes and leave
their hearts and souls on the football field. They did just that.”
Versatile Lawrence Robinson (Locust Hill) added another
strong performance. He played
tight end, flanker, spread end, and
finally finished the day at QB.
A scare at the end of the second
quarter turned out to be that and
nothing more. On a scramble by
Nelson, Moon Robinson peeled
back to help pave the way for a

Eight schools to seek Soucek
Tournament title this weekend
The Christchurch School varsity soccer team finished its 2004
season with a 12-5-4 record and
a #6 state ranking. The Seahorses
made it to the quarterfinals of the
state tournament, losing to St.
Christopher’s in a shoot-out.
With graduation, 11 players from the team moved on

are now playing at Christopher
Newport University, Campbell
University, Guilford College,
Olivet-Nazarene University and
Hampden-Sydney College).
“We lost a lot of talented athletes from last year’s team, but I
have a determined bunch of players,” said Coach Matt Schaefer.
“We are very inexperienced and
only have five players with significant varsity experience.”
Patrick Brown (Williamsburg),
Jody Young (White Stone), Antonio Harley (Newport News) and
Humroy Mascoll (Jamaica) are
the only returning starters from
last year’s team. “Brown, Harley,
Mascoll and Young will have to
carry a lot of weight if we are
going to compete,” explained
Coach Schaefer. “The key to this
team is how quickly the newcomers adjust to this level.”
The soccer team has been
in preseason since August 15
and played its first match of the
season on Tuesday, September
6, at Walsingham Academy, in
Williamsburg.
Preseason was productive for
Christchurch, with the team playing well in scrimmages against
Benedictine and Bishop Sullivan Catholic. The team finished
preseason with a tournament in
Pocomoke City, Maryland, where
they went 1-1-1.
The Christchurch defense is
unproven, with none of the players having any varsity experience, and Coach Schaefer has not
settled on the starting back line.

Bui (Vietnam), Scott Heyman
(Urbanna), Lee Arnest (Kinsale),
Andrew Hurley (Kitty Hawk,
N.C.), Young Hoon An (South
Korea), and Ryan Ellen (Susan)
are all fighting for playing time.
Eric Shepherd (French West
Indies) will play goal keeper
after serving as the back-up in
2003 and 2004. “Eric has paid
his dues; it is his time and he is
ready,” said Coach Schaefer.
Seniors Young, Brown and
Shepherd are this year’s captains.
Mike O’Shaughnessy (White
Stone) has played well in preseason and is, according to Schaefer, the most improved player on
the team. “I am very pleased with
Mike O, he has been brilliant.
Sam Chang (South Korea) has
shown me glimpses of flair and
I am hoping he comes around to
his potential soon.”
On Friday, September 9,
and Saturday, September 10,
Christchurch School will host
the ninth annual Jason Soucek
Soccer Tournament. The tournament is held annually in memory
of Jason Soucek Class of 1992.
Soucek was a tremendous student-athlete at Christchurch who
tragically passed away in 1996.
His nickname was “Juice” and
he was a standout in soccer, basketball and lacrosse. In 1992, he
won “Best All-Around Athlete”
honors.
This year the tournament has
eight teams: Hampton Roads
Academy, Walsingham Academy,
St. Christopher’s School, Cape
Henry Collegiate, Fredericksburg
Christian, Denbigh Baptist,
Benedictine and Christchurch.
Christchurch
will
play
Fredericksburg Christian at 5
p.m. on Friday and then play
the winner or loser of the Cape
Henry Collegiate-Benedictine
match on Saturday, September
10. The finals and third place
matches will be held at 3 p.m. on
Saturday with closing ceremonies at 5 p.m.
Admission is free, and all are
welcome.

Middlesex High junior varsity
volleyball team defeated visiting
Rappahannock in two games, 2510 and 25-11.
“Awesome serving won the
match,” said JV Lady Charger
coach Jennifer Harrow. “Taylor
Camden and Jamie Davis really
did a great job giving us easy
points at the line.”
Taylor Camden served for 21
points, including 12 aces, and
she had one kill. Jamie Davis
was good for eight points, six of
which were aces.
Good Middlesex defense aided
the first win in the season opener,
said Harrow. “The girls played
good defense. We still need to
work on setting up our offense.
Our passing and setting still
aren’t up to par.”
For the JV Lady Chargers,
Danielle Montgomery had two
points and a kill, and Katherine
Wood served for two points and
an ace.
Also, McClain Powell had a
point and two assists; Amelia
Garnett, one kill; Kelly Purcell, a
point; and Ashley Figg, one ace.
The Middlesex JVs also
defeated W&L on Tuesday.
The JV Lady Chargers will
host Northumberland on Tuesday, September 13. They are at
Rappahannock on September 15.
JV games begin at 6 p.m. and
are followed by varsity games at
7:30 p.m.

Ladies Day features ’Texas Scramble‘
The Piankatank River Ladies
Golf Association had a team
event for Ladies Day play on
September 1. The format was a
Texas Scramble. The preferred
drive for the team is chosen and
teammates play their own ball in.
The two best net scores are com-
bined for the team’s score.
In the first flight, the team of
Marty Torbett, Karen Gorin, Sally
Parkinson and Bev Hudgins won
with 109. In the second flight,
the team of Pat Olson, Roseanne
Moncure, Carole Elliott and Ruth
Wallace won with a 107.

MHS standout
on winning
hoop team
Sherita Burse, a rising sophomore at Middlesex High School,
participated in the Suburban
Coalition Summer Basketball
League held at Oxon Hill High
School in Oxon Hill, Md.
Burse played for the Suburban
Coalition All Stars High School
Varsity Team and her team finished with a record 8-3, clinching first place in the playoffs and
winning the high school varsity
tournament.
Burse received a trophy and
free admission to play in next
year’s
Suburban
Coalition
Summer League.
Each team played two to three
games every weekend from July
16 through August 20. Burse
also had the opportunity to meet
and see in action current and
future college, ABA, and professional basketball players from
overseas.
In addition, the summer league
offered scouts a chance to come
out and see players from the
Washington, D.C., metro area in
action during the summer.
Burse is the daughter of Joan
Strickland and the late Orzelle
Burnett, and the granddaughter
of Lena Kimble of Stormont.
Burse started on last year’s
MHS varsity team as a freshman, and is a former standout in
the Middlesex Youth Basketball
League.

Stingrays show strength
The three Tri-River Stingrays baseball teams successfully
opened their fall season this past
weekend.
The 12 and under Stingrays
won two games by the 10-run
rule against the Northern Virginia South County Hawks.
The 13 and under team
defeated the Richmond Dominion Dominators 15-6 in a nineinning game.
The 14 and under team downed
the Manassas Generals 11-3, and
lost a close game in extra innings
to the Stafford Pistols 8-7.

Country Day School will kick off
its 40th Anniversary Celebration

be had for folks of all ages.

petting zoo with a llama, Belgian
horse carriage rides, a pie-eating
contest, a kid’s country music
karaoke contest, monster trucks,
bean field trucks, an antique tractor show and games, and vaulting
on horseback demonstration.

Boat Shop in apple-pie order—

We have visited the “Sultana” John Smith project and the
Reedville one as well. Tonight
we plan to combine our research
and, with the gracious help of our
designer, Jim Thimsen, we hope
to decide on a plan of action for
the Boat Shop with our own version of this 30-foot 3-ton rowing
and sailing barge.
The Sultana guys, partially
funded by National Geographic,
are building the boat in two
halves, and using Osage orange
for most structural members.
Reedville is getting some oak
and they have a small model to
go by.
We also have the poop on the
Roanoke boat and the Plymouth boat and even a mention of
these take-apart boats on Drake’s
voyage. Quite a puzzlement but as
John Swain of the Sultana project
says, “You can skin this cat a hundred ways.” He asked me what we
were going to do and I told him
“just about the same as you guys,
but our boat will be faster and
prettier”—no real problem ‘cause
they are building a major Lumpcraft. Catch the movie “The New
World” for a look at the Plymouth
boat. And I guess we have a race
on our hands.

’Big Bubba‘ rules at the pool

A 12-inch, 10.75-pound
bullfrog named “Big Bubba” is
the envy of the local frog population.
Big Bubba has found a nice
home with nice people, and
even a swimming pool to call
his own.
For the past three years Big
Bubba has lived in the yard
of Otis and Erma Ryman of
Remlik. He lived in a cool
drainpipe for a while, but outgrew it and had to move to
bigger surroundings—such as
the Rymans’ swimming pool.
During the day Big Bubba
finds shelter in a hole beneath a
shrub in the Rymans’ yard. At
night he cools down and gets
his exercise by taking a dip in
the pool.
“The amazing thing is, not
that he jumps in the pool, but
he has the ability to jump back
out,” said Mr. Ryman this
week. “That’s hard for a frog
to do.”
Big Bubba is now part of the
family and the Rymans’ five
grandchildren couldn’t be happier. They pick him up in loving
arms and always welcome him
back.
The grandchildren, Andrea
Shaia, Jacqueline Shaia, Caroline Shaia, Adam Smith and
Emilie Smith explained that
bullfrogs like water because
water attracts bugs, which is a
bullfrog’s favorite food. That’s
why so many bullfrogs live in
creeks, marshes and ponds.
Water also keeps bullfrogs cool
and is their natural habitat.
Big Bubba, however, obviously enjoys a higher lifestyle
than any ol’ muddy creek or
pond. He wants a private swimming pool.
“We are quite sure Big Bubba
is one of the biggest bullfrogs
ever,” said Jacqueline.
One of the smartest too.
The public is invited to the
14th annual Family and Friends
Day worship service and picnic
at Angel Visit Baptist Church,
Dunnsville, on Sunday, September 11.
The worship service will commence at 11 a.m. Pastor Carla E.
Lightfoot will bring the morning
message, and music will be provided by the Angel Visit Inspirational Choir.
The picnic will be held at 1
p.m. on the back lawn of the
church.
The picnic will feature lawn
games, a variety of food, and fellowship with sister churches.
Casual attire is appropriate for
the entire day.
There will be no Virginia
Aeronautical Historical Society,
Middle Peninsula Chapter luncheon meeting at the Pilot House
September 15.
However, the chapter will visit
