In 2001, Worm’s Way, Inc. became the first in the retail hydroponics industry
to create an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). President Martin Heydt
implemented the beneficial ESOP, making eligible employees part owners
of the company. "We believe it is important for all our employees to know
how important they are to our company's success, and let them share in the
profits created from their work," said Heydt. Worm’s Way officially became
100% employee-owned in 2012.
Participating employees are involved in making decisions concerning the
company, fostering a sense of pride in ownership. In addition, committee
members take responsibility for directing the ESOP program. The value of
ESOP shares reflects the company’s value, and contributions are allocated
annually to participating members, supplementing the pre-existing 401(k)
retirement plan.
Our ESOP Communications Committee goes to great measures to ensure the
promotion of an “ESOP Culture” throughout the company:
• ESOP Plaque Display
(with names of all vested employees)
• Embroidered Fleece ESOP Vests
(for all vested employees)
• ESOP University
• ESOP Owners Manual
• ESOP Trustee Blog
• Wormie Bucks

Environmental stewardship is something we strive towards
at the Worm’s Way Group: it’s in our name and one of
our founding principles. We endorse recycling and waste
management in day-to-day business practices and operating
procedures and have a commitment to the purchase, use, and
disposal of products and materials in a manner that will best
utilize natural resources and minimize any negative impact
on our environment. From the earth-friendly products we
carry to the personal recycling efforts of each team member,
there’s a respect for the environment that can be seen in
every division of our company:
• We support environmentally-friendly gardening products
and practices. Many of the items we carry are listed by the
Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI).
• Company-wide recycling efforts include white and mixed
papers, plastic bottles, glass, aluminum cans and batteries.
• Cardboard boxes and wooden pallets are often repurposed
to fulfill our own shipping needs.
• In addition to reusing standard office supplies like paper clips, folders, and binders. We reduce waste by promoting
paperless e-commerce transactions and e-mail correspondence between team members.
• The packaging peanuts used in shipping are made from natural vegetable starch and are 100% biodegradable
and renewable.
• Outdated electronics (i.e. computer hardware) are recycled through a local hazardous materials facility.
• Customers can drop off their used HID lamps and fluorescent tubes at Worm’s Way retail locations for
proper disposal.
• We use regulated heating and cooling systems for energy efficiency at the home office, and urge team members to
turn off lights and other equipment when not in use.

About the Store
• In 1985 Founder Martin Heydt purchased an old bait shop in Bloomington,
Indiana, rejuvenated the 500 square foot retail space, and turned it into the
very first Worm’s Way store.
• The business quickly became too large for the bait shop and in 1991 Heydt moved
Worm’s Way Indiana three miles down the road to a 3,000 square-foot building.
• In 1996 Worm’s Way outgrew its surroundings and relocated to its current 4,000 square-foot location.
• Worm’s Way now has over 7,000 square-feet of sales floor, knowledgeable gardeners on staff, innumerable year-round
gardening products, and a large display greenhouse.
Community Involvement
• Worm’s Way has been involved with various organizations in and around the Bloomington community since its inception, sponsoring
youth athletic teams, donating seeds and produce to soup kitchens and food banks.
• Worm’s Way offers free gardening classes the last Saturday of every month. By attending the class you’re eligible for a
10% discount the day of the class.
• Worm’s Way participates in Ready, Set, Grow — a local non-profit to promote growing, composting, and sustainable projects.
• Worm’s Way regularly participates in regional, national, and even global hunger relief initiatives such as Plant a Row for the Hungry.
(sponsored by the Garden Writers of America, this program works by encouraging gardeners to plant an extra garden row and donate the
additional produce) and Hydro for Hunger (see hydroforhunger.org for more information).
• Worm’s Way has made donations of hydroponic systems to the Columbus, Indiana Boys and Girls Entrepreneur Club, and Hilltop Gardens
in Bloomington.

About the Store
• Just two years after the launch of the first Worm’s Way store, Martin
Heydt’s father, Wallace, expressed an interest in retiring to Florida.
This fit perfectly with the plan to expand Worm’s Way into new retail
markets, and in 1987, Wallace Heydt opened and managed the second
Worm’s Way store in Tampa, Florida. In 2012 Worm’s Way Florida
celebrated its 25th Anniversary.
• Originally a 2,000 square-foot facility, it didn’t take long for Worm’s Way
to outgrow its space. Four short years from its inception, the retail center
moved to a 4,800 square-foot building.
• Worm’s Way’s Florida store made another move in late 2008. The
new 6,600 square foot building makes it one of the largest
hydroponics suppliers in the southern U.S., with room for future growth.
Community Involvement
• Actively supporting environmental projects and co-establishments in the local community, Worm’s Way Florida gives presentations at
garden clubs such as the Violet Society, the Rose Society, and the Orchid Society.
• Worm’s Way regularly participates in regional, national, and even global hunger relief initiatives such as Hydro for Hunger (see
hydroforhunger.org for more information).

About the Store
• The third Worm’s Way retail location opened for business in Worcester,
Massachusetts in 1988. October 2013 marked the store’s 25th anniversary.
• Just 1,200 square-feet, the original Massachusetts store was the first
hydroponic garden shop in New England and only the second in the
Northeast. Conveniently located just outside Boston, the store quickly attracted
a devoted clientele.
• In the fall of 2000, Worm’s Way moved to a larger, more visible location on
Rt 146 in nearby Sutton. This location proved such a success that 8 years
later, in the winter of 2008, a 4,800 square foot addition was completed to
house and display the ever-expanding product line, to better serve its growing
clientele, and to show off the stores impressive year-round indoor lighting and
hydroponic displays. Now Worm’s Way Massachusetts is not only the oldest
hydroponics/indoor gardening retailer in New England, but the largest as well.
