Candidates for the Position of Treasurer
AFSHIN GANGI
“Interventional radiology continually evolves and drives the
development of medicine. For 30 years, CIRSE has provided essential
and meaningful opportunities to exchange ideas, educate, and
support research. I eagerly pursue every opportunity to engage with
colleagues around the world: to share my own experiences and
scientific results; to further my own understanding by learning about
theirs; and to engage with younger colleagues who are the future of
IR. The executive board of CIRSE is an opportunity to contribute my
enthusiasm and passion for IR and oncology, and to guide education,
research, and innovation opportunities. We can achieve so much

“Dear colleagues,
th
2015 CIRSE marks the organisation’s 30 anniversary. Being a proud member
of almost 15 years I have seen the tremendous development of this society
and its transformation to a professional and influential medical society within
Europe. Moreover, CIRSE has managed to be the home to Interventional
Radiologists from Europe and all over the world.
I have been an active fellow, scientific paper presenter, moderator during
our annual meetings, lecturer at ESIR courses and served in several task
forces and as the standards of practice committee chairperson.
Dear colleagues, we face many challenges in the future; one among others is
to ensure that our society is attractive to our younger colleagues and that
CIRSE remains „the place to be“ in Interventional Radiology.
For these reasons I run for the position of the chairperson of the
membership committee within our society.”

“Interventional Radiology (IR) is one of the youngest and most
innovative specialties in medicine. Unfortunately the acceptance
and use of interventional procedures is often based on an
individual interventionalist’s assertiveness instead of clinical data.
With clinical decision making being more and more linked with
evidence from clinical trials, the generation of high level evidence
is of utmost importance. Designing and funding of major trials is
beyond the scope of an individual interventionalist. Therefore, it is
essential to promote an infrastructure that fosters multinational
research in IR. Advancing this process is a key to guarantee a
bright future success of IR.”

VINCENT VIDAL
“For the last ten years, I have been very active in research and
teaching new interventional technologies internationally. I am
applying for the position of Chairman of the research committee. My
goal is to increase CIRSE's capacities to be a dynamic large scale
international research platform for IR. I believe that pre-clinical and
clinical research are the essential starting points for developing
innovative interventional radiology techniques, therefore we must
focus on research. Research is essential to remain competitive and
innovative regarding other specialties (vascular surgeons,
cardiologists …) in Europe. I will devote a large part of my energy to
CIRSE.”

Brief Curriculum Vitae:
“IR or Interventional Radiology had always been my dream since I entered the
stream of radiology as a student way back in 1995. However I had to wait
until 2010-2011 when I was selected as the first one to receive the 3-year
CIRSE fellowship program established in Denmark under DFIR (Danish Society
of Interventional Radiology) culminating in EBIR. This and the volumes of
education I received through CIRSE (congresses, meetings, symposia, website
etc.) enthused me to be closely associated with it. I served as a treasurer of
the Danish Society of Interventional Radiology (DFIR) from 2012-2014 and am
a central committee member until now. I was also responsible for the
‘Membership status’ coordinating closely with CIRSE to ensure updated
enlistment. I therefore feel that I am eligible for the post of ‘Member of the
Membership Committee”. I also organized the City Meet of Assam Branch of
Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA) in Shillong, Meghalaya
(India) in 1999. I humbly offer my services to further the cause of CIRSE and IR
as a member of the membership committee.”

“I am a young interventional radiologist, practicing since 2010 in a 620-bed
hospital specialized in oncology and abdominal pathology, treating people
from southern Europe and the Mediterranean basin.
I joined CIRSE as a junior and I learned the interventional oncology
techniques that I perform today. Now CIRSE is the important source for
scientific research, ongoing training, new techniques and guidelines in IR. It
has facilitated many informative exchanges with my European colleagues.
From my work in private practice, I firmly believe that IR treatments should
be offered more widely, not only in University Hospitals, in order to benefit
more patients.”
