Residents Enjoy Summer Aquatic
Programs in District Pool
M
ore than 300 residents ranging in age from
infant to adult participated in aquatic programs held in the High School pool. The district’s
popular Summer Swimming Program offered
Tiny Tots and Red Cross Levels 1-6 swimming lessons, diving instruction, water aerobics and Aqua
Zumba exercise classes and lap swim sessions.
Students also trained to become certified life
guards through Guard Start lifeguard training
and water safety instructor courses.
The program is directed by Physical Education Teachers Sheri Neu and Shawn Wheeler and
staffed by Haverling students who are certified
lifeguards.
Left: Lifeguards Mikayla Rowland, Mikenna Carpenter and Brady Derrick help even the youngest swimmers feel
comfortable in the water through fun activities such as swimming through a hula hoop. Right: Mikenna Carpenter
demonstrates the proper stroke as she helps a young swimmer.
School starts Tuesday, September 8!
Superintendent’s Column
D
ear Community,
We look forward to the 2015-16 school year
with great excitement. Another successful summer has concluded for our programs, including
driver education, swimming and much more.
During the summer, our staff completed many
trainings and student schedules and prepared for
the new year. Fall athletic practices are already
underway. In addition, the summer maintenance
and cleaning crews have worked hard on many
projects to keep our school looking great in the
midst of much activity.
As you will read in upcoming communication from your school’s principal, some of our
administrators have taken new positions in the
district. Due to recent retirements and cutting
back of other BOCES services, we have been able
to restructure our administrative team to address
some needs for all of our schools, including the
new state APPR requirements for independent
evaluators. More importantly, this has all been
accomplished without increasing our administrative budget for this school year. Additionally,
we are working to restore the adult education
courses for our community and provide more
direct support for our special education programs.
Changes include former High School Principal
Randy Brzezinski becoming the director of educational services; former Middle School Principal
Michael Siebert moving to the High School as
principal; former Middle School Assistant Principal Jennifer D’Abbracci being promoted to
Middle School principal; and former special education teacher Tuesday Mishook becoming the
Committee on Special Education chairperson for
the district. VEW Assistant Principal Jason deJong
left the district to take another position closer to
his home. At the time of this writing, the assistant
principal vacancies at VEW and the Middle School
have not been filled. More updates will be announced to the community as replacements are
appointed by the Board of Education.
In other news, the Parent Portal is expanding.
Many of you may recall that at Open House last
Page 2
School starts Tuesday, September 8!
September, there were opportunities for you to
register for access to the new Parent Portal. This
portal allowed many of you electronic access to
your child’s report card, schedule and real-time
attendance and disciplinary reports, as well as
copies of many important documents such as
handbooks, classroom standards and expectations and much more. This has been just one
more way of trying to create a positive parent/
teacher relationship with many avenues for communication. We are planning to have several stations set up at this year’s Open House to increase
registration.
Additionally, we will have live demonstrations
for those who may be interested in viewing the
portal’s capabilities.
This year, parents will receive fewer paper mailings than in previous years. As announced last
year, the district will use the portal as a method
of cost-savings by allowing us to eliminate printing costs and postage fees associated with traditional paper reports. We are asking parents to
use the portal for communication. Please contact
the main office at your child’s school if you wish
to continue to receive traditional mailings and
paper communication. Traditional methods will
be available for parents who do not have access
to the internet. Please call the main office at your
child’s school for more information on this important communication tool.
Finally, please take the time with your child to
reaffirm your commitment to his or her education. Your encouragement, active involvement
and established expectations promote a successful educational experience for everyone. It
is essential that parents, teachers and students
maintain a successful home/school team approach to education.

to Note
We ask parents to continue to:
• Establish homework as a top priority for their
children.
Send your children a very clear message: You

• Reinforce the behavioral expectations of the
school. Let your child know that you will provide addi tional consequences at home if he or she mis behaves in school.
• Communicate regularly with our teachers,
especially when there are concerns!
We ask students that they continue to always:
• Be in school
• Do their best
• Be respectful.

A note to High School parents
I
am Michael Siebert, the new principal at the
High School. For the last nine years, I was the
Middle School principal. Before that, I was the
High School assistant principal for three years.
I will really miss working with the staff at the
Middle School, but am looking forward to working in the High School.
It has been a busy summer at Haverling High
School. We continue to have upgrades to our facilities and our building security. We are fortunate
to be able to offer great facilities and programs to
our students. You will have an opportunity to see
our great facilities and meet the High School staff
at Open House on Tuesday, September 29 from
6:30-7:30 p.m. In addition to Open House, the
Guidance Department will host its annual college
fair from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the gymnasium on the
same evening. Please be sure to mark this date
on your calendar.
It is important for students and parents to understand the school day does not end until 3:00
p.m. Students who are doing well in their classes
and have no Block 6 obligations may leave at
2:14 p.m., but it will be necessary to keep this
time open as students may be required to be in
attendance until 3:00 p.m. whenever they begin
to struggle or get behind in their classes.
To help the first few days run smoothly, please
note these key times and procedures:
7:00 a.m. Doors open. Students may wait in the
lobby. Breakfast is available in the
High School cafeteria.
7:20 a.m. Students allowed in the hallways.
7:30 a.m. Block 1 begins. Students should be in
class prior to 7:30 a.m.
2:14 p.m. End of Block 5 and dismissal for
students not staying for extra help or
having any further obligations.
2:20 p.m. Block 6 begins for extra help and
study time.
3:00 p.m. End of school day.
Freshman/New Student
Orientation is Sept. 2
A
n orientation session for all new
students and incoming freshman and
their parents/guardians will be held on
Wednesday, September 2 at 7:00 p.m. in
the auditorium.
High School staff will focus on the block
schedule and attendance policy, as well as
discuss several other policies and procedures specific to the High School.
Time will allow for questions and a walk
through the building to locate classrooms
and lockers.
All visitors arriving between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30
p.m. must enter through the office. With new
security measures in place, any person gaining
access to the building will need to be buzzed in
through the Main Office. This will be the same
procedure that we followed starting last spring.
Visitors will be asked to sign in and wear a visitor’s badge.
The front circle is limited to school busses only
from 7:00-7:30 a.m. and from 2:00-2:30 p.m. At all
other times, the circle is available for dropping off
or picking up students.
We are excited about the 2015-16 school year
and look forward to working with you and your
children. If you have questions or concerns anytime during the year, please feel free to stop in
the office or call us at 776-4107, ext 2100.
Sincerely,
Michael Siebert,
Principal

Interact Club Receives Citation
A
t a recent Bath Rotary meeting, the Haverling Interact Club received the District Governor’s Citation in recognition of its outstanding
service for the 2014-15 school year. The certificate was signed by Rotary District 7120 Governor
Scott MacDonell.
The local students also were recently recognized by the Bath Rotary Club at one of its
luncheon meetings for the approximately 20
projects and events in which they participated
throughout the year. These included working at
a water station at the Wineglass Marathon, the
Crop Walk, a Halloween Party at VEW Primary
School, a Rotary International video contest, leaf
raking for senior citizens, Coats for Kids, paracord
bracelets and Christmas cards for members of the
military, Spirit of Christmas and Easter Egg Hunt
in Pulteney Park, the Dormann Library Christmas
Party, a second pallet of books for Books of the
World, the school’s recycling project, the Caring
Hearts and Minds of Pro
Action Project, the Hope Project, the Net Shelter
Project, the school’s spring cleanup, a spaghetti
dinner fundraiser, the Bath Rotary Club’s coffee
break fundraiser at the Campbell Rest Area and
the local tourist booth.
“The Interactors have had a fantastic year of
service and all Bath Rotarians are most proud of
these fine, young people,” said Becky Stranges,
Bath Rotary Club’s Interact co-advisor.
“In addition, I must say that the true hero of the
Interact Club is its faculty advisor Cari Scott,” said
Ms. Stranges. “The club has grown immensely
since Cari agreed to be its in-school advisor.”
According to Ms. Stranges, Ms. Scott has met
weekly with Interact President Colin Gilbert and
spent much time organizing and arranging the
projects and events in which the students have
been involved. She has sent reminder texts to the
students for all meetings, projects and events,
has kept attendance records, has posted agendas
and sign-up sheets outside her classroom and
has generally made herself available to all the
members. “There is no question that the success of the Haverling Interact Club is due to her
diligence and guidance,” said Ms. Stranges.

clubs benefit from the sponsorship by individual
Rotary clubs which provide support and guidance.
The organization has a membership of approximately 415,000 youth in more than 18,000

135 countries and geographical areas, making
Interact an international phenomenon.
Its global youth network provides an opportunity for young people to work together in a world
fellowship dedicated to service and international
understanding. The clubs are self-governing and
self-supporting and can be either school or community based.

Middle Schoolers Host Literacy Fair
Fourth-grader Tyler Evans chose to read the book,
My Teacher is an Alien, for the Middle School Literacy
Fair. He used a morphing program to turn a photo of
his human teacher, Kathy Partridge, into an alien for his
display board. You’re a good sport, Mrs. Partridge!
Josh Sehm discusses his story board with his mom,
Sandy, during the literacy fair. The students chose a nonfiction book to read and then created a pictorial book
report to present to visitors to the fair. Students had to
decide on a time line in which to complete their reading
and create a display that included the plot, theme and
character conflicts and add a hook.
Haverling Harvesters Feed Others
The Haverling Harvesters (pictured above) volunteered their time this
summer to plant and care for a community garden plot. The vegetables
raised in the garden will be donated to the local food pantry. The young
gardeners are past and present students of Kathy Partridge, fourth-grade
teacher at the Middle School.

elcome back to school! We are excited to
start the 2015-16 school year. Our first day
back together is Tuesday, September 8.
As we start the year, it’s important for all of us
to work together to ensure that our children are
safe and prepared.
A few reminders:
• If your child’s after-school destination changes,
please send a note to school with him or her
so we can make sure the change happens. On
the note, please write your child’s name, as
well as his or her teacher’s name. If the destina tion changes during the school day, please call
the main office at 776-4123, ext. 5100 before
noon. Only a custodial parent can make a
change to a child’s destination.
• If you have custody arrangements for your
children, please make sure we have a current
copy of the paper work.
• Write your child’s name and his or her teacher’s
name on backpacks and lunch boxes.
On the first day of school:
• Please write your child’s name and his or her
teacher’s name on a piece of masking tape
and affix it to his or her shirt. This will help us
get everyone to the correct classroom.
• Be sure to send in a signed note telling us the
plan for your child’s transportation to and from
school. The note should include your child’s
name, teacher’s name, bus number and the
address where the bus picks up/drops off or
if a parent will drop off/pick up.
Important phone numbers:
• Main office: 776-4123, ext. 5100
• Nurse: 776-4123, ext. 5310

Congratulations to Ethan Hursh (left), VEW third-grade spelling bee winner, and runners-up Emily Brockman and
Ellie Weston.
The lawn at VEW was a sea of red, white and blue for the school’s Flag Day celebration. Ms. Drain, Mr. Ordway and
UPK students entertained the crowd with patriotic music and Mrs. Long’s and Mrs. Smith’s students shared readings
before the school-wide parade around the block.
After learning about the community and community helpers, UPK students walked to Tops Friendly Markets and
had the opportunity to see many different community helpers in action. A highlight was getting to decorate cookies
in the bakery!
