The Most Holy Trinity
"The Spirit of truth... will take from what is mine and declare it to you."
Jesus says in today's Gospel that the Spirit declares something to US.
We actually have a kind of share in the blessed life of the Trinity
through this spiritual declaration. In particular, God gives us the gift of
his truth. Traditionally, we say that God--the Blessed Trinity--is the
source of all truth, beauty, and goodness. Today's reading reminds us
that truth exists, that it comes from God, and that we can know it, hear
it, and live according to it. "But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he
will guide you to all truth."
This is so important to remember in today's cultural climate. These days,
the very idea of truth is a touchy subject. Because there is so much focus
on tolerance and not offending anyone, we tend to shy away from
discussions about "absolute" truth. Instead, we hear a lot of talk about
"what's true for me" or "what's true for you." Too often we get confused
about how to respect others' differing beliefs while still maintaining our
own. Instead of embracing the fact that there is real truth--like, for
example, the truth that God became man and was born of Mary--it is
more popular to refer to "beliefs" and "traditions" and "practices,"
emphasizing that these things differ among people. Yes, those things
differ. But truth does not change. Either Jesus is God, or he isn't.
Either his claims were true or they weren't.
It's not a matter of personal opinion.
The Holy Spirit helps to convince us of what is really right.
But we needn't fear that this will lead us to be intolerant.
It is this same Spirit within us that brings the fruits of love, peace,
patience, kindness, and generosity.

Vocations Committee
The word “vocation” comes from the
Latin word “vocare” meaning “to call”.
Implicit in this “call” is freedom.
You have the freedom to say yes or no.
The invitation is gentle and if you feel like saying yes and
following the call, you feel joy and peace.

CONGRATULATIONS
TO OUR THIRD GRADERS
The third graders in our parish religious
education program received their First Holy
Communion at a special 10:00 a.m. Mass on
Saturday, May 21st. May they return to the
Table of the Lord often throughout their lives.
THREE PERSONS, ONE GOD
When I behold your heavens, the work of your
fingers, the moon and the stars which you set in
place — What is man that you should be mindful
of him, or the son of man that you should care
for him?
(Ps 8:4-5)
Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy
Trinity. One God, three distinct persons: God the Father,
God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. This is a concept
that is extremely difficult for most Christians to comprehend.
We are finite individuals.
Our mental capacities are
limited. We cannot hope to understand the depths of God.
The good news is that we do not have to understand. All
we have to do is embrace.
We have come to understand the persons of God in terms
of their roles. God the Father: Creator. God the
Son: Redeemer. God the Holy Spirit: Sanctifier.
May God who created us in His image and likeness, who
died for us and rose from the dead to set us free from sin
and death, and who makes us holy day by day, bring us,
one day, to eternal life!
FAITH ACTION:
Trinity:
Pray the following prayer to the Holy
Glory be to the Father,
Who by His almighty power and love created me,
making me in the image and likeness of God.
Glory be to the Son,
Who by His Precious Blood delivered me from hell,
and opened for me the gates of heaven.
Glory be to the Holy Spirit,
Who has sanctified me in the sacrament of Baptism,
and continues to sanctify me
by the graces I receive daily from His bounty.
Glory be to the Three adorable Persons of the Holy
Trinity,
now and forever.
OUR EIGHTH GRADERS
Our eighth grade students will graduate this coming
Saturday, May 28th. We wish them the best of luck as they
move on to the next phase of their lives in the many different
high schools they will attend.
Please keep them in your prayers as they prepare for their
graduation. May the Holy Spirit, of whom they have
received a fuller share in their Confirmation last week, lead
and guide them.
OUR NEW COUNCIL MEMBERS
Last Sunday at the 10:00 a.m. Mass, we announced the
new members of the Parish Pastoral Council. They will
serve as members for a three year period. Welcome to
Deborah Jarvis, Paul Liszewski, Dwight Reed, and Jim
Secviar. I am grateful for your willingness to serve your
fellow parishioners on the Council.
Thank you as well to those who have finished their three
year terms and are now leaving the Council: Leslie Dernulc,
Christi Kordeck, Michael Korfiatis (who served as our
Council Chairperson this past year), and Jesse Montenegro.
I appreciate all that you have helped us to accomplish over
the past three years.
ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
A minister thought that the reason no one was responding
to his altar call week after week was because his sermons
were too short.
He decided one week that he was going to “preach up a
storm.” In order to do so, he set his sight on speaking for an
hour and a half.
It appeared to work. Eighteen people did come down the
aisle to the altar to lay down after his first hour of preaching.
He thought it was odd, however, that none of them got up
after he was done.
Amen.
PLEASE REMEMBER THEM
Please pray for the priests and deacons who
have served the Diocese of Gary so faithfully
and whose anniversaries of death are this
week:

Synod 2017
In the May 22nd issue of the Northwest Indiana Catholic, Bishop
Donald J. Hying addresses the need
for discipleship and formation in the
Diocese of Gary. Please take the
time to read the bishop’s column and
reflect upon these questions: “How
do we keep Catholic education from
being elitist while at the same time
ensuring its quality? How do we
better integrate the formation and
sacramental preparation of both our
children in schools and parish-based programs?”
For the video on discipleship and formation and other synodrelated videos, go to dcgary.org/synod.htm. If you do not receive
the Northwest Indiana Catholic, you can access the bishop’s
column and his pastoral letter at nwicatholic.com.
