LINTON & DISTRICT HISTORY SOCIETY
Our winter season continues on November 6th when David Harrison will talk about
“Monmouth and the Chartists”. Then there's a complete change of pace on
November 13th with “The Swinging 60s” being introduced by Virginia Adsett and
Gillian Morss. (Yes, I know they say “If you were there you can't remember it”, but
that's not entirely true!).
Another “Golden Age” will be recounted by Fiona Morison on November 20th when
she examines “Culture during the Age of Elizabeth 1”. Our final lecture before
the festive season will be on November 27th when David Aldred will talk about
“Hailes Abbey and the mystery of the Holy Blood”.
The year ends with our Christmas Social Evening on December 4th. In addition
to the annual (and fiendish) Quiz from Mick and Gloria, we will be entertained by
the Penyard Singers.

All meetings take place at Linton Village Hall at 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm), and
admission is £2 for members and £3 for visitors. Admission is free for students in full-time
education. Annual subscription is still only £5 and information about membership is
available from Fiona Morison (01989 750882) or Peter Attenborough (01989 720746).

COBALT APPEAL FUND
Christmas cards and all Greetings cards are available from Aston Ingham, Linton and
Upton Bishop W.I.s, from Linton Post Office (open all day on Tuesdays and Thursdays)
as well as Burton Farm, Linton.
CHRISTMAS CARDS FOR RECYCLING - Please may I remind friends who intend to
donate their used Christmas Cards for the volunteers in Cheltenham to make into next
year's Christmas Cards, to avoid using sellotape or drawing pins which will damage the
face of the cards. Blu-tack is a safer alternative. I shall be pleased if I can have the used
Christmas Cards by Saturday 11 January 2014 as they have to be delivered to Cheltenham by Tuesday, 14 January 2014 for sorting and storing ready for making into new
cards. They can be left at any of the sales outlets as above.
Many thanks - Jane Vines

Aston Ingham Village Cross Update
10
There was the opportunity to visit Simon Hudson’s workshop on 8th October.
This is situated in the curtilage of Hereford Cathedral. He was in the
process of carving the inscription for the base stone of the Village Cross,
showing great enthusiasm about the project, and was pleased to find time
to chat about certain procedures that would be employed in the renovation.
The cross is scheduled to be dismantled on 21st October and some of the
work carried out in situ in the churchyard. The limestone mortar that will be
used is stronger than that used in medieval times, but it will mean that he
will still have to protect the cross with hessian until it has properly cured to
enable it to withstand the ravages of all the elements that it is likely to
endure in future years.
He has offered to take photographs of the various stages of renovation so
that we will have a lasting record of the refurbishment, which may be of
interest to future generations.
There is still a great need for fund raising to find the amount of over £2000
still needed for the project. Donations, however small will be gratefully
received. They can be sent to Mrs. Heather Hobbs, Clerk to the Parish
Council, Brooklands Cottage, Aston Ingham, HR9 7LS. Cheques should be
made payable to Aston Ingham Parish Council (Village Cross). It would be
helpful if name and address could be written on the back, so that the Clerk
can issue a receipt, or on the envelope of any cash donation.
Thank you to everyone for supporting this very worthwhile parish project.
Rosemarie Tree.

“LINTON – NOW & THEN”
It was standing room only at Linton Village Hall last month when Roger Davies
introduced the amazing collection of photographs covering a century of change in
Linton and Bromsash. The exhibition “Linton - Now and Then” was put together to
17
celebrate the 30th anniversary of Linton & District History Society and included
documents and photos from the Society's archive together with photographs lent
by residents and marvellous new pictures taken by Roger over the last year.
Introducing the screen display of over 400 pictures Roger put the story of change
into the context of the rich farming heritage of the area. Changes in farming
practices, wrought by the needs of war and then the impact of the Common
Agricultural Policy, altered the landscape and the use of farm buildings. Improved
infrastructure - the motorway, electricity and mains water followed quickly on
each other in the 1960s - led to more residential building and more traffic.
Then we were led, at motorway speed, through the lanes and along the ridge to
see how these changes had affected every part of Linton and Bromsash.
Wherever possible Roger included older photographs as well as up-to-date ones
and gave interesting facts about former occupancy. This provoked additional
information from members of the audience both during and after the presentation
with many more memories being brought to mind.
Copies of the photographs in j-peg format are available free of charge to
members of the Society – annual membership is only £5 and this covers reduced
admission to its series of talks and social events, including outings during the
summer months. Meetings are Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm in Linton Village
Hall. For more details see “The Chimes” and local notice boards.
Next year the Society will be researching World War I and its effect on the
community. Anyone who has memorabilia, memories, family stories or other
information, please get in touch with Fiona Morison (750882).

carried forward. There may be delay in obtaining updates given the change over.

and sun terrace over an existing garage. The Parish Council had no objections to this
application.
Planning Applications Status: 131910/FH - Ridgeway, Gorsley – Demolition of
existing outbuildings and construction of pool house and garage. Planning permissiogranted with conditions.

single story extensions and 2 front single storey extensions. Planning permission

granted with conditions.
132111/S – Homes Grove, Upton Bishop – Proposed hay store and implement shed.
Planning application withdrawn.
131706/CU – Homestead, Cothars Pitch, Gorsley - Development consisting of a change
of use of a building and any land within its curtilage from use as an agricultural building
to commercial usage for storage and distribution. Prior approval was not required for the
development described
S122991/F - Forge House, Bromsash, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, HR9 7PJ - Proposed extension, alteration and change of use of the forge and garage to form granny
annex. Concerns raised about the wall built at the cross roads outside Forge House
limiting the already reduced visibility – Hereford Planning Department to check the
position of the wall.
P1735/12/FUL (Forest of Dean Council): Land adjacent to Hillside Cottage, Ross
Road, Gorsley (Gloucestershire). Change of use of agricultural/equestrian land to
accommodate 21 touring caravans. FODDC Planning Committee was considering this
application again on 10th September, despite having refused it at a Planning Committee
19
meeting on 13th August. The Council required members of the Planning Committee to state
more clearly their reasons for refusal of this application.
Report on the Quarry: A report on the meeting at the quarry with Natural England and
Earth Heritage Trust had been circulated to Councillors. This highlighted that the quarry
floor and rock face was very overgrown and a lot of clearance work was required and, in
respect of the SSSI definition, was no longer considered to be in a ‘favourable condition’.
Also the pond towards the back of the quarry had been taken over by the invasive New
Zealand pigmy weed, which had dried up the water in the pond. Careful precautions would
be needed with any clearing work to ensure the weed did not transfer to other areas/garden
ponds. In addition: Natural England to apply for grants for clearing the rock face and pond,
if successful, the parish council would be offered a further management agreement in
respect of these areas to enable initial clearing work and ongoing maintenance. Earth
Heritage Trust have over 100 volunteers and were confident that they could provide some
person power to assist with clearing work, local assistance from residents in the parish
would also be welcomed to return the quarry to its former state and give pleasure to all who
visited this special site.
Two requests had been received for access to the quarry – the first from a geologist to allow
a researcher from Birmingham University to visit the quarry site and use it as part of her
research. Following confirmation of appropriate insurance cover and risk assessments it
was agreed that permission would be given. The second request was to allow the creation
of an Earthcache at the quarry - an internet-based treasure hunt using GPS or similar
device, nothing physical was placed at the site. It was agreed that permission would be
given for visits to the quarry and for the creation of an Earthcache and it was hoped that
this would create additional interest in the quarry.
The proximity of the over hanging trees to the power lines adjacent to the quarry had been
reported to Western Power, a site visit was being arranged & any necessary work undertaken.
Review Website renewal/refurbishment: Three quotes for renewing/updating the website
had been circulated and reviewed. Following discussion on cost, responsibility & ease for
ongoing maintenance & updating of the website, it was agreed to proceed with the renewal
of the website at a cost of £200 + VAT.
Chairman’s Announcements: The Chairman spoke about the Herefordshire Council Fair
Share petition, which asks the government to provide a fair share of funding to rural
counties such as Herefordshire, and encouraged people to participate.
The date of the next meeting was confirmed as Monday 14th October in Gorsley Village
Hall. Meetings are on the 2nd Monday of the month, held alternately in Gorsley or Linton
Village Hall.

MURDER AT THE MILLENNIUM HALL
Bare Bones present “Prescription for Murder” by Norman Robbins
In the seemingly quiet town of Bere Knighton there is never a dull moment for Dr
Richard Forth. Notonly does he have a hectic work schedule and an awkward
friendship with his ex-girlfriend, buthis wife, Barbara, is constantly ill and nobody
knows what is wrong with her. When Eric Dawson, a stranger, claims to have
known Richard’s second fiancée, a woman Richard claims does not exist, Barbara’s health worsens and she isn’t the only one. With bad luck spreading almost
as quickly as bad news, it seems somebody is out to kill Barbara, and anyone else
who gets in their way. Thrillers are something of a departure for Bare Bones but I'm
sure that this fine example will baffle and entertain to the last word.
Prescription for Murder will be performed at Upton Bishop Millennium Hall on Friday
29th November at 7.30pm. Tickets at just £5 are available from Bare Bones Box
Office (1981-540820) or at the door.

We owe a special thank you to the tug-of-war team from Chicory Crops who
stepped up to the mark for the honour of Upton Bishop at the Weston-underPenyard Michaelmas Fair. They pulled manfully and womanfully but Linton proved
too good and walked away with the trophy. If anyone would like to join in and make
up an Upton Bishop team for 2014, please ring 780321.
Many thanks to everyone who helped to make the Phoenix Recorder Orchestra
concert a success. The music was sometimes moving, at times it brought a broad
smile and the Orchestra seemed to be enjoying themselves as much as the
audience. Everyone certainly appreciated the delicious refreshments.

Upton Bishop Big Dipper 2013 Race Report
Fifty-five runners took up the Big Dipper challenge this year and the top three men
were all local runners from Ross-on-Wye. David Setchfield just edged out Gavin
Jones in a sprint finish with Ian Smith close behind. For the ladies fifty-six year old
Beryl Sampson was an impressive winner followed by Ross veterinary surgeon

runners mixing well with representatives of at least ten running clubs. The weather
was kind and the tea and cakes at the finish were very welcome. Many thanks to
our sponsors including Newent Autos, Chicory Crops, RP Joinery, Chaseview

This is an opportunity you can't afford to miss
Register your Interest NOW for BT Infinity as the Dymock Exchange is under evaluation
NOW
Jon Osmond <[email protected]> has brought to our attention a review that BT are
conducting of the Dymock exchange. The Broadband service to our area including large parts
of Kempley is lagging way behind the main cities and towns and will soon impact on our
routine use of media and business.
Jon writes ... "My thoughts were if they are evaluating it now we may only get one shot at it
any time soon, as such it could be a good time to email out to everyone in the local area,
highlighting this is happening now and urge them to register their interest in getting BT Infinity.
This may tip the balance in our favour and get them to upgrade the exchange
All we need to do is get as many local people as possible to visit the following
website: http://www.bt.com/infinity
Click ‘Can I get fibre optic broadband’
Fill out the form either using a phone number or a postal address.
When the check comes back and shows that it “currently isn’t available to you” click
the “Register Interest” button on the right hand side.
This will ask for some further details etc. Simply fill out that form and submit it and
that will register the interest.
This doesn’t sign anyone up for the service and you don’t have to pursue it any further if
you don’t want to, should the exchange get upgraded. It is simply telling BT that there is the
possibility of sales in the area if it were available. In addition if you need any further
clarification on any of the points in this email please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Kind Regards
Jon"
The advantages to BT Infinity are:
·
Vastly improved services like BBC iPlayer, Sky Go, Youtube plus other streaming
services that require faster download speeds and full HD Streaming.
·
Windows Updates and every other download will happen much faster
·
It will be easier to share photos, videos or sending emails with large attachments.
·
Lower latency will be noticeable when generally browsing as websites should feel
like they are loading faster, in addition it will lower ping times for online gamers.
·
The new fibre optic technology could result in even higher speeds/additional services being introduced in the future.
Apologies to those not served by the Dymock exchange for whom this email is
therefore not relevant. As I don't have everyone's phone numbers on the database, I
couldn't sort by exchange.
Louise Earll
EDITOR’S NOTE
Even if you are not on the Dymock Exchange, you can still
register your interest in BT Infinity and hopefully help to inprove
our Broadband service throughout the area!
RECTOR’S LETTER

Dear Friends,
I spent yesterday (17th October) mostly on a training day about Church Weddings, and so thought that I would say something about that as a change for
November. It may seem a little unseasonable, but I know that through the
winter many couples thinking of marriage ‘make up their minds’ and so this is
offered as a nudge to you, or maybe your children, and to share some information.
Hopefully it is no surprise or controversy to say that the Church of England is in
favour of marriage. What may be less well known is that since 2009 there has
been a national initiative, the Weddings Project, to promote church weddings.
The jolly website, www.yourchurchwedding.org, offers helpful advice and
information. The Church is trying to establish a presence at wedding fairs and
in the world of bridal magazines. Clergy are being encouraged (some against
their own instincts!) to welcome greater variety and imagination – those of you
who saw the pictures of me in the Ross Gazette and other papers with Mo the
donkey leading a bridal procession at Weston in August know that I am happy
to be flexible.
As a church, we do know though that there is a need to discourage certain
persistent myths about church weddings. We really are open to all – you do not
need to be a regular worshipper or indeed even christened to marry in church,
and members of other denominations are very welcome. Although these
weddings need to be considered on a case-by-case basis, I and probably now
the majority of clergy are happy to marry those whose previous marriages have
ended in divorce.
It is also easier to marry in church than you may think. The wedding with the
donkey was most notable to me not for the ass, but that it was planned in four
weeks flat, and was refreshingly simple and economical compared to some. A
church wedding will usually be cheaper than one involving hiring any sort of
historic property. And unlike a hired house with a registrar for the day, the
church community and I are there for the future to support and encourage those
married in their life together.
So spread the word – we are taking bookings. If you ‘haven’t got round to it’
yet, be bold! If you know a couple planning to marry soon, let them know that I
and other vicars would be delighted to hear from them, and to help with any
queries. And to all who are planning to marry, in church or not, we pray for a
joyful day and lasting commitment for the years ahead.

Jubilate!
The Penyard Singers is excited to be joining with Ledbury Choral Society and
Tarrington Brass to give the second performance of ‘Jubilate! (missa brevis)’
composed by their music director, John Frith. This work gives the concert its title
and will take place at John Kyrle High School on Saturday 16 November at 7.30pm.
Tickets are £9 in advance, £10 at the door and can be purchased through the
website www.penyardsingers.org.uk, by ringing 01531 828057 or from choir members.
The choirs and band performed the premier of this commissioned work as part of a
concert held at Ledbury in March this year. The concert was well received for its
varied programme and we are looking forward to reprising John’s work and performing several other pieces, this time to include Dvorak’s Te Deum and Parry’s I
Was Glad anthem as well as brass only items from the band.
The choir have had a successful recruitment campaign over the summer with
several new members joining the choir. However, they are still looking for a
rehearsal accompanist to work with them so if you think you would be interested
please either ring Linda on 01531 828057 or go to the Contact page on

Whether you want to achieve literary immortality or just persuade people of the
genius of your thoughts you don’t need to have anything to say – you simply need
to say it well. And to say it well you just need to know the tricks of the trade, the
simple formulas that have been in use from The Bible to The Beatles, from proverbs
to number one singles. These are the timeless techniques of classical rhetoric that
worked just as well for Tennyson as they do for Tarantino. Join Mark as he explains,
in his inimitably lucid and entertaining way, why you remember lines like ‘Bond.
James Bond’ and ‘To be or not to be’, how Katy Perry adapted Charles Dickens,
and the intriguing complexity of Dirty Harry’s rhetorical questions.
Mark Forsyth is the bestselling author of The Etymologicon and The Horologicon,
both adapted for BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week. The success of his books and
blog, The Inky Fool (blog.inkyfool.com), has made him one of the UK’s best-known
commentators on words.
Tickets can also be purchased by calling in to our shop or over the phone on Ross
01989 564464
(Where we charge for a ticket we allow customers to redeem £3 of the cost of that
ticket against the price of the book at the event).
