approval of Centegra Hospital –
Huntley. The community wants and
needs this hospital, and we couldn’t
be happier to deliver it. Thousands of
local residents voiced their support,
and we thank you for your outstanding
commitment to the community we serve.
It’s a time of change—in our region,
in seasons and in the pages of this publication, too. Centegra
Health System’s HealthToday has a new look, starting with
this issue. We’ve combined a fresh lineup of news and
feature stories with our calendar of events and classes. As
you may recall, the calendar previously arrived as a separate
publication. Now you’ll receive both in one magazine.
Keeping you informed is what this publication continues
to be about. With the turn of a page, HealthToday brings you
stories about local providers and state-of-the-art medical care
available close to home, along with tips for healthy living.
I hope you enjoy the new HealthToday and all it offers. For
updates on the new hospital, stay tuned to this publication
and visit CentegraHospitalHuntley.com. I wish you good
health and happiness this holiday season.
Sincerely,
Michael S. Eesley
Chief Executive Officer
Centegra Hospital –
Huntley approved!
The Illinois Health Facilities Services and Review Board approved
Centegra Health System’s plan for a 128-bed hospital in Huntley on
July 24. Located on Centegra’s health and wellness campus at Reed and
Haligus roads, Centegra Hospital – Huntley will treat its first patients in
2016, create 800 construction jobs and employ 1,100 area residents.
“We are thrilled by the board’s decision,” says Centegra Health
System CEO Michael S. Eesley. “This is a great day for the communities
we serve in southern McHenry County and northern Kane County.”
“Centegra Health System has been an outstanding partner for
many years, and Huntley is excited to welcome a full-service Centegra
hospital to our village,” says Huntley Mayor Chuck Sass.
The hospital will feature 100 medical-surgical beds, an eight-bed
intensive care unit, a full-service emergency department with a Level
II trauma center, Level II special care nursery, noninvasive cardiology
services, a helipad for transporting patients with the most critical needs
and a dedicated women’s center.
More than 16,000 community members submitted letters to the
state expressing their support for the project.

New lab service benefits patients
High-quality. Cost-effective. It’s all part of the
new Centegra Clinical Laboratories (CCL).
Centegra Health System recently
expanded to include an independent
reference lab. When your doctor orders a lab
test, you will now benefit from prices
that are competitive with large commercial
labs, with the added convenience of local
service. CCL is an approved lab provider
for many major insurance carriers, such as
BlueCross BlueShield, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna
and more.

You may have blood drawn at
convenient patient service centers located
in Huntley and Crystal Lake. If you need
lab services, bring your physician order to
either walk-in lab location:

w Crystal Lake Medical Arts, 360 Station

Saying
‘so long’
to aches and pains
all have aches and pains. Maybe it’s stiffness in your neck
W efrom
sitting at a computer all day. Maybe it’s lower-back
strain from lugging your kids from place to place. Or maybe your
hips or wrists have become sore with age.
You don’t have to put up with this kind of pain, says Ali Malick,
MD, a rheumatologist with Centegra Physician Care. Treating these
aches and pains now may help prevent worse problems down the
road.
DON’T WAIT
Rheumatologists treat many common conditions,
including arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome,
fibromyalgia, lupus and gout.
Dr. Malick sees adults of all ages who show
symptoms of these chronic conditions. There
Ali Malick, MD are many other causes of joint and muscle pain,
such as bursitis or tendonitis, that can actually be
cured, Dr. Malick says.
“Of the patients who come to our office who think they have
arthritis, a significant number actually have ailments that can be
more easily treated,” he says.
Common neck, shoulder, knee and hip pains, for example, may
be relieved with a steroid injection to help muscles relax, followed
by physical therapy to help keep your body in balance.
“Addressing these issues early may prevent something more
serious in the long run,” says Dr. Malick.
“Say you have bursitis of the right hip,” he explains. “You start
putting more weight on the left, causing that joint to wear unevenly,
like the tires on a car that are out of alignment. After a few years,
what started as right hip bursitis changes to left hip arthritis.
That imbalance hurts the right knee, then the ankle. Then it’s
uncomfortable to sleep, and a cycle starts where you’re in pain all
over and tired all the time.”
The right care can help reduce your pain, may prevent further
problems and lets you focus on the things you care about.
GET YOUR LIFE BACK
For Island Lake resident Eugene Wyatt, 70, treatment meant he
could get back to his garden.
The right care lets you focus
on the things you care about.
“I was having pain in all my joints—ankles, knees, hips, shoulders,
hands, elbows,” Wyatt says. “It got so bad I could barely walk.” At
times, Wyatt had to use a walker, and it was almost impossible for
him to tend his vegetable garden.
Dr. Malick treated the pain with shots in his shoulders and knees,
and now Wyatt is back to pruning and harvesting.
“I could feel the difference almost immediately,” he says. “Now I
can work in my garden again.”
CENTEGRA CAN HELP
“People with any muscle aches or joint pain should see a
rheumatologist,” says Dr. Malick. Rheumatologists help relieve
pain with a variety of treatments, including disease modifying
agents, biologic agents, infusion medications, pain medications and
physical therapy. If necessary, they can also refer you to a surgeon,
neurologist or other specialist.
To schedule an appointment with a rheumatologist at Centegra,
call 815-338-6600.

CHECK UP ON YOUR HEALTH
A little prevention
goes a
long way
beginning at age 20 if a
man in your family had a
heart attack before age
50 or if a woman had
one before age 60. High
cholesterol is a major risk
factor for heart disease.
w
w
D
on’t let illness sneak
up on you. Paying
attention to your health,
even when you feel fine, can
make staying well easier in the
long term.
Regular screening tests
and checkups with a doctor
are good ways to take control
of your health. These
exams can make it easier
to spot problems early,
when treatment is often more effective.
They might even prevent a problem from
developing in the first place.
Before your checkup, you should review
your family medical history. Your doctor will
want to know if close relatives had health
conditions such as heart trouble, stroke,
diabetes or cancer.
6 CentegraHealthSystem
HealthSystem
Also, tell your doctor about any changes
in your own health. That includes new
lumps, skin changes, pain, dizziness, sleep
problems, or changes in eating, bowel or
urinary habits.
Your doctor can then recommend which
preventive health services and screenings
you should have and when you should have
them.
WHICH SCREENINGS
ARE FOR YOU?
Some of the screenings that your doctor
might recommend could include tests for:
w Cholesterol. This is a blood test
recommended for adults starting at age 20
who use tobacco, are obese, have diabetes
or high blood pressure, or have a personal
history of heart disease or blocked
arteries. Testing is also recommended
Blood pressure.
Have this checked at least
once every two years. High
blood pressure increases
risks of heart and kidney
disease and stroke.
w Diabetes. If your
blood pressure is higher
than 135/80 or you take
medicine for high blood
pressure, you should get
screened for diabetes.
Colorectal cancer.
Most adults should have
their first exam at age 50.
Ask your doctor which of
several available tests are
right for you.
Women should also
consider screening tests
for breast cancer, ovarian
cancer, cervical cancer and osteoporosis.
Ask your doctor whether a mammogram is
right for you based on age, family history,
general health and personal concerns. Pap
smears are often done every one to three
years. A bone density scan should be done at
least once beginning at age 65.
Men should talk to their doctor about
the risks and benefits of prostate cancer
screening. Also, men who are between ages
65 and 75 and who have ever been smokers
should ask about screening for abdominal
aortic aneurysm.
Your primary care
physician can help you decide which
screenings are best for you. (See also
page 23.) Don’t have a regular physician?
Your perfect doctor is waiting! Call
815-338-6600.

SPORTS CONCUSSIONS
Comprehensive
care at Centegra
have made headlines in
C oncussions
recent years, with professional athletes
bringing this type of traumatic brain injury
(TBI) into the public eye. However, the pros
aren’t the only ones at risk.
Each year, some 1.7 million people in
the U.S. sustain a TBI. Many concussions,
especially among children and teens, occur
during sports or recreational activities.
Centegra Health System offers the only
comprehensive sports concussion program
in McHenry County to manage and treat
concussions—from pre-injury evaluation to
post-injury care.
WHAT IS A CONCUSSION?
A concussion can occur
when a blow or jolt to the
head or upper body causes
rapid movement of the
head and brain, temporarily
changing the way the brain
functions. Most of the time,

but it’s much more than simply a bump
Spotting concussions
Neurologists at Centegra recommend
learning the ABCs of concussion:
A—Assess the injury
Did a blow to the head or upper body
jolt the head? Are there other signs of
a concussion (see the list below)? If the
answer to either of these questions is yes,
assume a concussion has occurred.
B—Be alert to the symptoms
Common signs of concussion include:
w Appearing dazed, stunned or confused
w Loss of balance or coordination
on the head.

C—Contact a physician
Seek medical care from a physician
who has experience in evaluating head
injuries.
An individual with a concussion must
rest and not play sports until a physician
has evaluated him or her and given
clearance to play. Children and teens
should never return to the activity on the
same day they were injured.
If the athletes in your family have not yet received a baseline
concussion screening, schedule an appointment soon. Call 815-759-4342.

Learn
to live
Diabetes
education
at Centegra
A
diagnosis of diabetes is the start of a lifelong education. Suddenly, you need to learn
all you can about blood sugar, nutrition, diet and possibly medications.
Education classes at Centegra Diabetes Center can help keep you ahead of the curve.
Whether you’re newly diagnosed or just want to keep up-to-date, the goal is to help you
know what steps to take to manage diabetes, prevent complications and live well.
INFORMATION YOU CAN TRUST
When Huntley resident Jennifer Francissen, 42, was diagnosed with diabetes in
March, she did her own research using books and websites. She found it hard
to locate clear explanations and answers that she could trust.
That changed when she took the diabetes education classes at
Centegra, which are available in both McHenry and Woodstock. She
received up-to-date, medically sound information from physicians,
pharmacists, nurses, dieticians and other experts.
“It’s so much easier to have a person to talk to about everything,” she
says. “The people at the center are trained to do this. People should
really take advantage of it. My class was small and personal, and I could
get answers to my questions.”
PUT KNOWLEDGE TO WORK
Centegra also offers practical guidance and resources so you
can put everything you learn into practice.
For example, Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Centers,
located in both Huntley and Crystal Lake, have indoor and
outdoor pools and more than 200 fitness classes to help you
keep your diabetes in check. Centegra’s WellBridge program
includes two months of membership for you and a support
person for just $60 each (per month), providing you with a
healthy environment to focus on your health and wellness.
Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center membership includes
a free fitness assessment.

avoid hospital admissions and reduce health care costs?
Introducing the Centegra WellBridge Program, a 60-day
wellness membership to Centegra Health Bridge Fitness
Center. Now Centegra Physicians and Clinicians can
prescribe exercise to patients who are at risk of disease.
Centegra is the only health care system in McHenry County
to offer such a program.
BACK ON TRACK
What makes Centegra WellBridge Program so valuable? Just
ask our members—like Barry Hansen.
“My dad was 560 pounds—I just didn’t want to be like
him,” Hansen says. “You can’t do anything, you can’t get
around and people treat you differently. Then one day I was
getting ready for work, and I collapsed on my kitchen floor.
My wife found me, and she thought I had a heart attack. The
hospital ran all kinds of tests, but they couldn’t find anything
wrong with me. I was 355 pounds at the time.
I had bariatric surgery at Centegra Health
System, and they prescribed the two months
of exercise after my procedure. I still run on
the indoor track every day; it’s just been
unbelievable. Now I’m down to 218! I don’t
think I’d be here today if I didn’t come here
Barry Hansen to Centegra Health Bridge. I just can’t say
enough about them—they’re like my family.”

health services.

risks, speak to a Centegra Physician today about the new

GUARDIAN ANGELS
Your
chance to say
J
ohn Shay has participated in the
Centegra Cardiac Rehabilitation
program for many years. However, one
rehab appointment in particular stands out
from the rest.
“I had a pain in my upper arms,” says
Shay, who is 82. “The nurse saw that I wasn’t
feeling well, and she was there right away to
check on me.”
That nurse was Lisa, who immediately
took Shay to meet with his doctor in the
Centegra Heart Center, and she stayed there
with him while he was examined. Though
it turned out that he was fine, Shay never
forgot her kindness and dedication.
When he learned that he could make a gift
to honor her as a Centegra Guardian Angel,
Shay knew he’d found the perfect way to
acknowledge that special care.
A MULTIPURPOSE GIFT
Guardian Angel gifts are part of the
charitable giving program at Centegra,
which is administered by the Centegra
Health System Foundation. These gifts
go toward essential areas, such as cancer
care, women’s health services and cardiac
rehabilitation.
When you make a Guardian Angel gift to
honor someone, that person is presented
with a pin to wear as a daily reminder of this
honor.
Shay didn’t stop with one gift. He also
wanted to honor Monet, the nurse who
helped him when he was hospitalized for
pneumonia last December. His care involved
a number of procedures, and Monet made
sure he understood everything that was
happening. During his hospital stay, Shay
had been worried. However, Monet was
there with reassuring words, just when he
needed them most.
24 CentegraHealthSystem
thankss
“It was like waking up and hearing an
angel,” Shay says.
GIVING BACK
A Guardian Angel at Centegra can be a
nurse, a physician or any caregiver you want
to recognize for providing exceptional care.
Maybe a doctor took extra time with your
loved one, or a technician saw a way to
make your test easier. Maybe, as with Shay,
a nurse saw that you needed extra care or
just brightened your day.
Guardian Angel gifts are a great way to
say, “Thank you—your efforts meant the
world to me, and I want you to know
how grateful I am.”
A GIFT THAT KEEPS GIVING
Your Guardian Angel gift also
has another role—it continues
to make a difference in the
important, innovative projects that
help provide high-quality care to
the McHenry County community.
Shay imagines his two
Guardian Angels feeling proud
when someone comments on their
pins—and that makes him feel good.
When you make a Guardian Angel gift,
you can also feel proud—for helping your
community get the best health care possible.
“I’ve always received good care at
Centegra,” Shay says. “The Guardian Angel
gift is a wonderful way to say thanks.”
If you have someone
at Centegra Health System you’d
like to thank, or if you would like to
share your own story of receiving
exceptional care, contact the
Foundation at 815-788-5870
or [email protected].
“Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues
but the parent of all the others.”
—Cicero (106–43 B.C.), Roman statesman and philosopher
