• Celebrated our 30th Anniversary
As you may have noticed, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival has
grown immensely over the years. Attendance, international press coverage, and
sponsorship support soared. Of course, we couldn’t have achieved this without
our community of film geeks and cinephiles. Thank you.
But, our work isn’t over. Many young people, particularly from underrepresented,
low-income communities, lack access to quality arts education programs. As an
educator myself, I’m reminded daily about how important the arts are in the lives
of my students – studying film nurtures their curiosity, inspires them to think
outside of the box, and develops their analytical thinking skills.
Everyone deserves access to programs that give them opportunities for artistic
exploration – and a better chance at life. In order to help fill this need, we’re
gearing up to expand our programs for youth, and we hope to count on your
support.
At Santa Barbara International Film Festival, we love the marvelous world of
cinema, and we’re so glad that you do too.
See you at the movies!

The mission of Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) is to celebrate the art of independent and
international cinema, with an emphasis on films that consider the human condition, the environment and the
diverse cultures of the world. In addition to presenting films, SBIFF engages the community through seminars

SCREENINGS
Not even the biggest grouch could have done anything but smile as the Santa Barbara International Film
Festival hosted nearly 5,000 local elementary school students — many from underprivileged communities
— at two screenings of THE LEGO MOVIE, both of which were followed by Q&As with the popular animated
film’s directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord.

Education is at the Heart of our Mission
At Santa Barbara International Film Festival, we are dedicated to providing art education programs that help
create and sustain healthy communities. While currently our educational programs take place during the Santa
Barbara International Film Festival, we are further expanding our programs to create year-round initiatives and
will continue to look to our community for support to help make this work happen.
Our goal is to promote and improve student achievement and life skills by providing access to film studies
throughout an individual’s education – we touch the lives of kids from grade school through college.
From the innovative 10-10-10 Program, to Mike’s Field Trip to the Movies, to the Film Studies Program, SBIFF
provides opportunities to countless students who may not have had much exposure to film. I’m thrilled to be
helping expand this very important community aspect of the festival.

3-Stage Approach to Arts Education
Mike’s Field Trip to the Movies
Mike’s Field Trip to the Movies happens at Stage I of our educational programming. The objective of the
program is to expose the world of cinema to kids at a very young age, in order to instill film appreciation and
provide access to the artful world of storytelling. While this program is open to everyone, we provide
priority access to students who are from underserved and low-income communities. The participants are
given a rare opportunity to study film through active participation. Participants not only watch movies, but they
analyze the films with the help of Study Guides and engage in Q&A sessions with the actual filmmakers. In
2015, over 4,000 fifth and sixth graders watched THE LEGO MOVIE, and engaged with directors Phil Lord and
Christopher Miller.
10-10-10 Mentorship and Competition
At Stage 2 of our educational programming is 10-10-10 – a mentorship program that serves high school and
college students. The program’s goals are to encourage teamwork, build self-confidence, and teach the
craft of filmmaking. At the heart of 10-10-10 is mentorship – each student-team is assigned a leader, a
professional filmmaker who provides guidance and advocates for the team’s success. Each year, all completed
films are screened at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, giving participants an opportunity to
showcase their work to a large festival audience. In 2015, 20 students participated in the competition.
Film Studies Program
Our most intensive educational program is in Stage 3 – the Film Studies Program (FSP) is an immersion
program targeting students studying film at the university level. In 2015, nearly 60 students from top schools
around the country participated, representing University of Southern California, School of Cinematic Arts;
University of California Los Angeles; Santa Barbara City College; Columbia University; and Chapman
University. The main goal of FSP is to provide participants real world experience, while developing their
analytical skills. The program happens during the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, which provides a
truly unique backdrop for hands-on learning and engagement.
Film Studies Program participants engage with
Oscar-winning Producer John Lesher (BIRDMAN).
The Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film
Our annual Kirk Douglas gala honors individuals that have made lifelong contributions to cinema. Whether
their craft is in front of the camera, behind the scenes, or both, the honoree is an influential expert in their own
right. We’ve honored some remarkable Hollywood icons – Robert DeNiro, Harrison Ford, Forest Whitaker,
Quentin Tarintino, and most recently, Oscar-winning actress Jessica Lange at the 9th Annual Kirk Douglas
Award for Excellence in Film. This star-studded event attracts the biggest names in Hollywood, and is an
important fundraiser that provides the financial support needed to keep SBIFF’s programs thriving.
I’m very honored that BEHAVIOR won the Audience Award
at The Wave Film Festival. It is a delight to know that the
film has such big fans in the Santa Barbara arts community.
Ernesto Daranas, Director
Cinema Society
Founded in 1998, Cinema Society is SBIFF’s local initiative that builds community and celebrates the art
of cinema throughout the year. The goal of Cinema Society is to foster an appreciation of independent
and studio films, motion picture history, and the tremendous diversity of international cinema. Each
year, members are invited to 25 film screenings, many of which include filmmaker and talent Q&A’s, as well as
receptions. In 2015, members had the opportunity to watch some of the year’s best films, including BIRDMAN,
INTERSTELLAR and THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING.
The Showcase
SBIFF, in partnership with Metropolitan Theatres, programs The Showcase Film Series. This series features
innovative independent films which will not have a theatrical run in Santa Barbara and are screened especially
for Santa Barbara cinephiles. These gems are presented every week at the Plaza De Oro Theatre.
The Wave Film Festival
In keeping with our commitment to provide year-round cinema thriving in Santa Barbara, we launched
The Wave Film Festival – a program that showcases leading films from around the world. The program
launched with a French edition in summer 2014, and a Latin American and Spanish edition in spring 2015.
Both were held at the historic Riviera Theatre, and showcased 11 films and 22 screenings over the course of
5 days. Participating films included, Ernesto Daranas’ BEHAVIOR (Cuba) and Claude Lelouch’s WE LOVE
YOU, YOU BASTARD (France) – both of which were the winners of The Wave Film Festival’s Audience Award.
Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain participate in a Q&A
at Cinema Society with Executive Director Roger Durling.
