NEW YEAR’S
RESOLVE?
Studies show people need to focus on
WHOLE HEALTH
by Ruth OsbORn
News editor
Health” in U.S. News and World Report. Instead
of refined sweets, choose nuts, for example. They
are filling, which guards against over-eating,
and are associated with healthier weight and
longer lives. A handful of nuts may have more
calories than a handful of cookies, but they
will keep people more satisfied. Whole foods,
like nuts, reduce subsequent calorie intake and
keep the day’s overall calorie consumption
lower. Refined products like cookies and cake
keep people craving and eating more. Instead
of resolving to purchase only products that are
“low-calorie” or “low-fat,” choose more foods
without labels at all (or at least with minimal
processing).
• Don’t focus on the scale: Pounds gained
Tyler, photo
or lost are poor measures of what Walt
actually
counts—which is fitness vs. fatness. A pound
of fat takes up more space in the body than a
pound of muscle, so it’s possible to lose weight
and become fatter. That means a person can gain
weight while becoming fitter. People should
focus on how clothes fit and how they feel.
• Fewer calories doesn’t necessarily mean
less food, according to the Kaiser Permanente
Medical Group. People do not have to eat less
food to eat fewer calories. Avoid high-calorie
foods and focus on lower-calorie foods. Eat
more salads, vegetables and fruits. Limit or
avoid high fat meat, soda and sugary snacks.
A little less fat, a little more plant-based food,
a little less sugar, a little more exercise—that’s
what health experts are advising as a good plan
for 2016. People don’t need a white-knuckled
approach to dieting and exercise to make health
headway in 2016.
Millions of people resolved last week to
lose weight and get fit. But rigorous programs
of diet and exercise just don’t work for the vast
majority, according to obesity experts. It’s not
willpower that is derailing dieting efforts; it’s
a combination of focusing on misguided goals
and a biological impertative that causes the body
to work against dieting by slowing metabolism
to keep it from starving to death.
GRF
But the problem persists. More than onethird—nearly 35 percent or 78.6 million—of
U.S. adults are obese, according to the Journal of
American Medicine. Obesity-related conditions

Three guest

Seniors stung by
new ‘boosting’ scheme
by JiM breeN
iSSuES/oPinionS
Editor
Linda Walton of the Council on Aging, Orange County, wants
readers to be aware of a dangerous scam that was passed along by
Kelli Morris, the organization’s financial abuse specialist.
Morris recently got calls from two senior women in regard to
“boosting,” a relatively new online scam that already led to a case
of identity theft for at least one victim.
Both women had accounts on Facebook and were approached by
other Facebook users to do some “inspirational” writing. One was a
religious group and the other, a motivational speakers organization.
For a nominal fee, the women’s literary contributions would be
“advertised” to direct traffic to Facebook and other social media pages.
Their message could be widely disseminated and the women
would be credited on the group’s social media pages for their writing.
That’s known as “boosting” since it increases social media posts
and their presence.
Both women agreed to write and “advertise” on more than one
occasion.
It was eventually learned that the groups were not legitimate
and the money was pocketed by whoever was behind the Facebook
accounts.
In one case, one bank account was emptied because the victim
used her debit card to pay for the “advertising.”
Both woman are now dealing with identity theft issues, which is
overwhelming for anyone, much less someone in their 80s.
•••
The call placed to Watch Your Step by Ruth Rucker of Mutual 6
on June 23 to report the IRS scam was No. 266 received this year by
Watch Your Step. The one-day high was 34 calls on Jan. 7.
•••
A non-resident reader from Long Beach passed along an alarming
statistic from IDG News Service on scams aimed at big business.
Over the past three years, cybercriminals have managed to steal
over $2.3 billion from companies worldwide by impersonating their
chief executive officers and instructing employees via email to initiate rogue wire transfers.
Have you been the victim of a scam attempt? Send the details
to [email protected] or call 431-6586, ext. 387, Wednesday
through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The American Legion Auxiliary named Marlene Crow
member of the year at the group’s
June luncheon.
Crow joined the Auxiliary in
2004 and has served as first vice
president, chaplain and Americanism chairman.
She is always among the
first to volunteer for many other
activities such as poppy making,
helping at bingo, setting tables
or transporting people to events.
She visits members who are

occasions with cards of thanks.
The meeting was also highlighted by the passing of the

Tonight at the Amphitheater,
members are requested to sit
at the tables to collect food for
veterans and their families.
On Friday, July 1, members
are needed to sort and box the
food for distribution.
An overview of the United
Nations’ sustainable development goals and what two local
organizations are doing to overcome poverty and its effects will
be presented at the 1 p.m. meeting
of Senior Patriots for Peace on
July 8 in Clubhouse 4.
John Straw and Cat Quinn
from Concern America, an international development and refugee aid organization, will be two
of the three guest speakers. They
will discuss the work they do
with economically impoverished
communities around the world
to develop long-term solutions
to poverty.
They will be followed by Alison Crosby from the Illumination
Foundation.
She will discuss the services
her foundation provides to the
most vulnerable homeless clients
in Orange County to break or prevent the cycle of homelessness.
The program will include folk
music and light refreshments.
Participants will learn what
is being done to alleviate hunger, homelessness, poor health,
limited education, environmental
degradation and economic and
social justice inequities.
There will be a discussion
period after the presentations.
There is no cost to attend.
Non-residents who want to attend should call Nancy Goldstein
at 896-8604 or Lucille Martin at
430-1047.
Children-A-Priority
Teen Challenge rep at meeting
Children-A-Priority will meet at noon on Thursday, July 7, in
Clubhouse 4.
Guest speaker will be Brad Keeling from Orange County Teen
Challenge, one of the largest substance abuse recovery and prevention programs on California.
The organization is committed to helping those involved in addiction, alcohol, and gang violence.
Teen Challenge gives back to local communities with outreaches,
events and after-school programs.
Evangelism and outreach to at-risk youth and families is at the
heart of the organization’s ministry in Orange County.
Before the program, a hot catered lunch will be served at noon.

PERSPECTIVES
Letter to the Editor
Safety/Emergency Coordinator’s Column
Outside The Wall
Editor:
My wife and I are both in our 90s and use walkers to prevent
falls. We would like to attend events in Leisure World, but most of
them are not walker friendly.
Most venues use a tightly arranged horizontal and vertical chair
setup. The only chairs people can use to keep their walkers close by
are on the front and back rows.
Front row seats are often reserved and always disappear early. Aisle
seats with walkers close by could be used if the aisles were wider.
A walker in the aisle is a hazard. Sometimes, someone will offer
to move the walker to a safe place and then forget to bring it back
after the program.
More walker friendly chair setups are now being used by the
Sunshine Club, the Democratic Club and the Health Care Center.
These setups will offer more front row seats. We hope more clubs
will try new seating arrangements
With over 1,000 walkers in Leisure World, it’s a shame that so
few residents with them attend events.

Reminders on GRF pet policies in LW
by eLOy GOMez
SAFEty/EmErGEnCy
CoordinAtor
Providing for your pets’ physical needs and
caring for them with love and commitment are
the first requirements of responsible pet owners.
But those are not the only requirements. Pet
owners cannot reasonably or responsibly ignore
the impact their animals can have on neighbors.
This is especially true of those living in multifamily properties.
Here are a few GRF policies to keep your
neighbors happy and pets safe.
According to policy No. 7501, responsible pet
owners must:
• Clean up after their pets and dispose of the
waste in a sanitary manner. When walking a dog,
the owner must carry plastic bags or a scoop.
• Keep dogs on six-foot leash at all times when
outside the home.
• Make sure that dogs are licensed and have
been registered at GRF’s Stock Transfer Office.
• Never leave a dog unattended in any dwelling
area for more than four hours.
• Spay or neuter dogs or cats to improve the
health and behavior of the animal.
• Inoculate pets as needed or required by the
Stock Transfer Office.
• Practice basic summer safety.
Never leave a pet in a parked vehicle, not even
for a minute, not even with the car running and air
conditioner on. On a warm day,
temperatures inside a vehicle
can rise rapidly to dangerous
levels. On an 85-degree day, for
example, the temperature inside
a car with the windows opened
slightly can reach 102 degrees
within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach
120 degrees. In those conditions,
pets may suffer irreversible organ
Eloy Gomez
damage or die.
California Penal code 597.7
prohibits leaving or confining an animal in any
unattended motor vehicle under conditions that
endanger their health or well-being due to heat,
cold, lack of adequate ventilation, or lack of food
or water, or other circumstances that could reasonably be expected to cause suffering, disability, or
death to an animal.
Limit exercise on hot days. Take care when
exercising pets. Adjust intensity and duration of
exercise in accordance with the temperature. On
very hot days, limit exercise to early morning or
evening hours, and be especially careful with shortnosed pets, who typically have difficulty breathing.
Asphalt gets extremely hot and can burn pets’
paws. Always carry water to keep them from
dehydrating.

Democratic Club
Candidate for Congress is dinner speaker
Suzanne Savary, Ph.D., will
be the featured speaker at the
Democratic Club’s ninth annual
dinner at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July
9, in Clubhouse 4.
Dr. Savary is the California
Democratic Party’s endorsed
candidate for Congress, running
to replace Republican incumbent
Dana Rohrabacher as the representative from the 48th District.
Dr. Savary, as one of the
leading progressive voices in
Orange County, is a champion for
women’s access to reproductive
health, tolerance and pay equality.
Her environmental goals for the
county are to repair crumbling sea
walls; provide for the safety of
nuclear waste from San Onofre;
and to work for collaboration on
desalination development.
She comes from a long line
of political activists. Her great
uncle, a former chief justice of
the New York State Supreme
Court, fought organized crime
in the ’30s and ’40s. Her father
fought with the Third Marine
Division in Iwo Jima. Her uncle
Suzanne Savary
helped Bobby Kennedy write the
RICO laws that toppled modern
organized crime.
She is a retired University of
Southern California associate
professor, where she taught management and communications at
the Marshall School of Business.
As CEO of her own management
consulting firm since 1979, she
has helped clients, ranging from
Fortune 20 companies to small
biotech firms, grow their businesses by teaching managers
and executives how to create a
high performance environment
– exactly the skills that are most
needed in Congress today.
Tickets for the annual dinner
are $25 and can be paid for at
the door but must be reserved in
advance by calling Laura Wilson
at 760-6660. Those preferring
wine with their dinner may bring
their own selection. Purple “Hillary” mini tote bags and mint tins
will be available for a modest
donation.
It has been an especially critical year in the world of politics
and funds raised at the dinner will
be used to support candidates,
important causes, and programs
that encourage Leisure World
residents to vote in November.
The Leisure World Democratic Club continues to staff a
voter registration table in front
of Clubhouse 6 on Wednesdays
from 10:45-12:30. For more information, call Dale Lieberfarb
at 594-1119.

Fill out forms when disposing e-waste
The Golden Rain Foundation has an e-waste container
for shareholders, located in the
alley behind the service maintenance building at the west end
of Golden Rain Road. It is accessible Monday-Friday from 8
a.m.-4:30 p.m.
There is no charge for shareholders to properly dispose of
electrical appliances, computers,
mobile phones, televisions or
other devices, however a form
must accompany the e-waste.
Forms are located in the red box
on the chain-link fence.
E-waste that is not accompanied by a form costs the foundation extra money.
Rapid changes in technology
result in fast-growing surpluses of
electronic waste around the globe.
Diverting electronics from
landfills allows some appliances
to be recycled and reused and also
keeps toxic metals such as mercury and lead found in computers
and other e-waste from leaching
into soil and water.
The USA discards 30 million
computers each year. The Environmental Protection Agency
FORMS must be completed
to deposit e-waste in the bin.
estimates that only 15–20 percent
of e-waste is recycled. The rest of
these electronics go directly into
landfills and incinerators.

the four quickly realize that the intervening decades have changed
Sin City and tested their friendship in ways they had not imagined.
Some scenes and language may be offensive to some of the viewers.

Dancers encourage men to join for fun, exercise
The Joyful Line Dance Club
of Leisure World celebrated its
second anniversary in March.
The purpose of the club is to
provide opportunities to improve
emotional and physical condition
and to live healthy, enjoyable and
happy lives during retirement.
The club encourages men to
get out of their living rooms and
learn line dancing. The teachers
give them individual attention
they need to take and get to
socialize with others to enhance
healthy aging. The club has more
than a handful of male members
who like to participate to learn
different dances each month
under class teacher Chung Cha
Lewis, Grace Ahn. The club has
guest instructors, Leona Wagner
and Pat Erickson, choreographer/
teacher of Suede Sole Dancers as
time permits.
The club meets from 3:30-5
p.m. on Wednesdays in the Clubhouse 3 Lobby and Fridays in
Amphitheater to learn line dances
to current popular music.
Members who have been
coming to the club and mastered
several songs, performed at
the Nikkei Club’s recent social
gathering.
Members practiced “Summer
Night Cha Cha Cha” and “Cherry

will continue to do them with
new ones.

Samsung reps demonstrate Androids
The Leisure World Computer Club will conduct classes at 9:30
a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday July 6, in Clubhouse 3, Room 3.
Several members from the Samsung staff will present a comprehensive review of Samsung products and help participants learn how
to use the products, specifically, Androids. This is a “user-friendly”
way to compare and learn about the products.
This meeting will start with a small review and then proceed into the
intermediate level of the Android/Sansung tablets and smartphones.
The Samsung and Leisure World Computer Club staff will provide assistance.
Room 3 is relatively small, so attendance is limited. To insure a
seat, call John Retterath at 544-3201, to sign up prior to the class.
Wi-fi internet access in Clubhouse 3 is limited, so some may not be
able to use their devices. Sometimes listening and taking notes is
more effective than trying to actually perform the task.

* An independent clinical study in the US has shown that primax provided a significant improvement in ease of listening in demanding listening environments. A newly developed methodology using objective brain behavior
measures (Electroencephalographic data), showed a significant reduction in listening effort for mild to moderate hearing impaired subjects using primax hearing aids in speech-in-noise situations applying advanced features
such as Narrow Focus and EchoShield.

Karaoke
Eight newcomers took stage
HUI O HULA is sponsoring a ‘Kanikapila’ (jam session) on Saturday, July 16, from 2-5 p.m.
in the lobby of Clubhouse 3. The afternoon will feature an encore performance by Hana
Hou Hawaiian band and several musical guitar and ukulele groups from Leisure World and
elsewhere. Musicians and dancers are invited to bring standard song books to share so others may sing, dance and play the ukulele or the guitar. “It will be a great afternoon jamming
together,” says Hui O Hula director Jojo Weingart. “Let’s make music together.” At the Hui’s
May 1 Hawaiian party, Na Wa ‘Ao Keawe Ukulele Club played while guests did an impromptu
hula. Everyone is invited to the event. Call event coordinator Kaye Huff, 431-2242, for more
information or to sign up to perform.
Karaoke was jumping last
week with 45 singers showing up,
including eight first-time singers
taking the stage: Tom Wilson,
Jean Kenin, Benny Chavez, Mya
Vasquez, Barbara May, Manuel
Burges and Virgil and Betty
Bagstad. All impressed the group.
Leila Claudio did a lively
“Shall We Dance?” as did Hinh
Minh and Barbara May, “Release
Me”; David Noble, “Return To
Sender”; Ellen Brannigan, “One
Day at a Time”; Helen Schultz,
“Blueberry Hill”; Tony Tupas,
“Kokomo”; and Jeannette and
Joe Kirk, “Little Darlin’.”
Singers may submit a first
song selection to the host and then
sing once more during the session
with someone else as a duet if it
is the other singer’s first song.
All are welcome to enjoy
the party atmosphere, meet old
friends and make new ones. There
is coffee available and snacks.
The Galal’s generously provided
pizza again last week.
Practice sessions are held
Tuesdays in Clubhouse 6 from
1-3 p.m.

Happy Anniversary
Couple that ‘wouldn’t last’ celebrates 50
Mike and Pat Herman will celebrate their 50th anniversary on
July 2.
The Hermans met at a pool party on June 4, 1966, and after a
whirlwind romance they eloped to Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 2, 1966.
Pat lived in Long Beach near the Traffic Circle and Mike lived
in Belmont Shore.
The plan was to not tell anyone about their marriage for a few
months and let family members get comfortable with an engagement.
That plan lasted less than two weeks.
The marriage that “couldn’t last” made it 50 years. “With two
wonderful daughters and two terrific grandsons we feel very blessed,”
said Pat.
They moved to Mutual 9 in 1998 and love the life-style there.
They have “terrific neighbors” and enjoy many activities. They love
RVing and traveling in general, especially cruising.
Their gift to each other was a trip to Australia and New Zealand.

Pedigo honored on HS graduation
Kathryn “Kate” Pedigo, Mutual 5, was honored on the 87th anniversary of her graduation from Indiana’s New Albany High School
by current NAHS fine arts department chair Linda DeRungs, who
recently bought a unit in Mutual 1. Pedigo, a 24-year Leisure World resident, graduated from the
southern Indiana school in 1929. She will turn 105 on Aug. 2, and
has done her alma mater proud, having exhibited her art works widely
and published three books.
DeRungs presented Pedigo with a “swag bag” of NAHS items
donated by the school’s award-winning arts programs. The items
included shirts and programs from the school’s nationally recognized
musical productions, an insignia Bulldogs cap and other memorabilia, a program from the school’s 2016 Indiana state basketball
championship, and a photocopy of Pedigo’s 1929 senior yearbook. DeRungs, the NAHS choir director for the past 32 years, is in

Telecommunication is topic July 12
Bob McCauley, vice president of operations at Superwire Telecommunication, Inc. , will be the featured speaker at the Schmooze
Club meeting on Tuesday, July 12 in Clubhouse 3, Room 9. Refreshments and “schmoozing” (socializing) begin at 10 a.m. followed by
the program at 10:30.
McCauley is a familiar name and face in Leisure World. As head
of the Superwire office behind the Friends of the Library Bookstore
near the North Gate, he has made many presentations in LW keeping
residents up-to-date and making the unfamiliar and often confusing,
world of technology clearer to LWers, who find the rapidly changing technological environment overwhelming. In his usual friendly,
affable, and patient manner, McCauley will discuss “What the
Technology Future Holds” and the recent switch from Time Warner
to Spectrum. There will be ample time for questions-and answers
from the audience.
There is no cost to attend his timely presentation. Guests are
welcome.
The Schmooze Club will be on summer recess during August,
and will resume in September.
American-Latino
Club will host potluck tomorrow, CH4

The Basic Rules of Sudoku:
• There is only one valid solution to each Sudoku puzzle. The only way the puzzle can be considered solved
correctly is when all 81 boxes contain numbers and the other Sudoku rules have been followed.
• When you start a game of Sudoku, some blocks will be pre-filled for you. You cannot change these numbers in the course of the game.
• Each column must contain all of the numbers 1 through 9 and no two numbers in the same column of a
Sudoku puzzle can be the same.
• Each row must contain all of the numbers 1 through 9 and no two numbers in the same row of a Sudoku
puzzle can be the same.
• Each block must contain all of the numbers 1 through 9 and no two numbers in the same block of a
Sudoku puzzle can be the same.

Golden Rain Foundation
FOLLIES
Huntington Beach hosts one of the largest Fourth of July events
on the west coast, beginning with breakfast in the park, followed by
a 5K run, parade, festival at the pier and concluding with fireworks.
Due to the activities, Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) will be closed
in both directions between Goldenwest Avenue and Beach Boulevard
from 5 a.m.-2 p.m. and again from 7-11 p.m. Traffic on PCH will be
detoured at Goldenwest Avenue and Beach Boulevard up to Garfield
Street. PCH will be completely open to traffic no later than 2 p.m.
The parade, “America the Beautiful,” steps off PCH and 8th Street
at 10 a.m. and travels south to Main Street where it continues east to
Yorktown Avenue. The parade will last about two hours.
The first two blocks of Main Street will be closed all day.
The tradition began on July 4, 1904, when Huntington Beach
commemorated the arrival of the first electric passenger train linking
the area with Long Beach and Los Angeles.
The pier will be partially closed to the public all day and completely closed at 5 p.m.
Fireworks will be launched from the end of the pier beginning at
9 p.m. Huntington Street will be closed to through traffic between
Atlanta Avenue and PCH.
