Principal’s Message
Greetings Shiloh,
As this semester and school year comes to a close, I am truly
excited about the success our students have experienced this
year as well as what the future holds for Shiloh High School.
Although I have only been the Principal at Shiloh High for three
months, I have enjoyed working with our students and teachers
and participating in their various learning experiences within
these past months. There are a lot of great opportunities taking
place here and there are many more that are upcoming.
I am excited to announce our seniors will graduate on May
25th at 12:00 PM at the Gwinnett Arena. The Shiloh community
is extremely proud of these seniors and the postsecondary
options they have prepared for themselves. I am also proud
to announce that Shiloh High School has now been fully
authorized as an IB (International Baccalaureate) School. This
is great news as the IB Programme is a great opportunity for
our students. The IB Programme will also help to further shape
and cultivate the academic climate for our school by providing
students exposure to this rigorous course of study. Also for the
first time, Shiloh High will have a Rising Ninth Grade Summer
Camp in June and we will also host an AP Summer Bootcamp
for students. Please stay tuned-in as registration is currently
taking place for both of these exciting events.
As the summer months approach, please check our school
website for important and updated information regarding
summer activities as well as items for the opening of
the school year in August. I encourage our students
to remain involved and engaged in their learning
by continuing to read in June and July and prepare
themselves for the fall. Thank you again for a
great school year and I look forward to seeing and
speaking with you all soon.
Have a safe and restful summer,

INTEGRITY FIRST
SERVICE BEFORE SELF
HONOR IN EVERYTHING WE DO
Shiloh GA-871 finishes the year with a bang!!
These are our core values and our cadets clearly demonstrated
them this year. They competed in the Gwinnett County Drill
Competition. This was a competition that included all four
branches of the military. We took first in two separate categories,
unarmed drill and color guard. All the other events we at least
placed in. The highlight of the event was when Shiloh was selected
as the “most motivated”, team there. An award very hard to come
by—but well deserved!! This award proves that even amongst the
best—we are the best!!
We also had our 25th Annual Military Ball. It was a huge success.
The cadets looked sharp and all the guests were dressed to impress.
All the top performers in the corps received awards for all the great
things they’ve accomplished this year. This was the 2nd time we held
this event in the commons area and it was awesome. This is also a
time for us to wish our seniors farewell as they go out and pursue
their dreams and careers. This year’s graduating class includes the
following cadets.
Steven Hayes, Evan Murray, Westley Williams, Charles
Prow, Jaylen Manuel, Aaliyah King, Madeline Sutlif,
Chelsea Garcia, Rabya Akhtar, Davon Perrin, Raymond
Seaborn, Jamie Harris, Kashif Ali, Dominique Watson, Juan
Washington, Shazeed Mohammed and Phillip Trocheck
Good luck in your endeavors and you will be missed!
Lastly, our 2nd annual GA-871 sports day is scheduled for May
19th. This is a fun day where all the flights compete against one
another in various sporting events. They include basketball, football,
dodge ball, push ups, sit ups, marching, and ends with a tug-o-war..
Once again, it has been an outstanding year for our JROTC
program. We are very proud of our cadets and wish them well over the
summer and are looking forward to seeing them next school year.

Georgia Grains - Fact Sheet
Grains Grown in Georgia:
• Grains (also known as cereals or cereal grains) are grasses that are grown for their
edible seeds. Grains are a staple crop; they provide more food energy than any other
crop in the world. Rye, oats, wheat, corn, sorghum, and barley are all grains that
are grown in Georgia.
• In the United States, Georgia ranks 2nd in the production of rye, 19th in the production
of oats, and 24th in the production of wheat.
Nutrition:
• Any food made from wheat, rice, cornmeal, barley, or other cereal grains is part
of the grain group. The grain group is divided into 2 subgroups: Whole grains and
refined grains.
• Whole grains contain the entire grain kernel, which includes the bran, the germ, and
the endosperm. Whole grain products have more fiber and nutrients than refined grain
products. At least half of the grain products we eat should be whole grain.
• Refined grains have had the bran and germ removed through a process called
milling, which is done to give the grains a finer texture and improve shelf life.
However, when the bran and germ are removed dietary fiber, iron, and many B
vitamins are also removed. Many refined grain products have been enriched,
which means vitamins and minerals have been added back in, but the fiber is not
added back in.

COUNSELING DEPARTMENT
This is a bittersweet time of year for the counseling department. We have worked closely with students,
parents, and staff to ensure that all of our seniors are on track to graduate; however, we know that we will
miss our Generals from the Class of 2012. We wish them the best of luck in all of their future endeavors!
How and when do parents and students learn a student’s HOPE eligibility status? This information
is posted on the GACollege 411 web site three weeks after grades are finalized. The Gwinnett County School
system forwards grades to the Georgia Student Finance Commission, and they determine if a student is
HOPE eligible. They post the student’s status on the GAcollege411 website. Students will NOT receive
automatic or direct notification of their HOPE eligibility status. In order for students to view their HOPE
eligibility, they must have a GAcollege 411 account.

How do students create a GAcollege411 account? Students sign on to www.GAcollege411.org and
create a “My411 Student Account.” Students, parents, and college financial aid staff will have access to the
HOPE information that is provided from the Georgia Student Finance Commission. Good luck, seniors!
Did you know that students can see their progress towards HOPE as soon as they have completed
the first term of their 9th grade year? Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC) offers a service
called a HOPE Progress Report that conducts the HOPE GPAcalculation on 9-11th grade students. The
primary purpose is to provide a progress report toward HOPE eligibility so course and study plans can be
made by parents, counselors and students. The service is entirely optional but strongly encouraged. The
GPACalculation is the same as senior HOPE candidates, but uses the course grades earned to date. We
hope this process will eliminate the “Senior Surprise” for graduating seniors and their parents.
Homeroom placement is made at the beginning of each academic year based on the number of
units at that time. Please consult the Choice Book if you are unsure about homeroom placement for the
2012- 2013 school year.

PTSA NEWS
Greetings SHS Parents, Students, and Faculty:
I can hardly believe we only have a few
weeks of school left and another successful
school year will be coming to a close. The PTSA
has made a great effort to have a consistent
presence in the school here at Shiloh and that
has helped to increase parent participation,
student awareness, and help for the faculty
on a regular basis. Our overall goal is to be a
united team of parents, teachers, and students
working cohesively to make our students,
school, and community the best it can be! I am
proud of what my daughter has learned and
accomplished here over her high school career
and am confident that Shiloh has prepared her
for the next phase of her academic career. Please
stay committed to supporting this great school
and standing united!
Our annual PTSA scholarship was awarded
to 5 outstanding students and they will be
presented on May 17th at Honors Night. Thank
you for all your support this year to enable us
to continue this important tradition. We will
also be honoring our teachers during teacher
appreciation week and want you to be involved
if you can. We will send an email and calling post
letting you know how you can get involved and
help thank our great teachers and faculty.
If you have any questions or comments
regarding the SHS PTSA and this year’s events
and programming please feel free to email us
at [email protected] and we
will respond accordingly. Also if you have any
suggestions for next year please email us. I have
enjoyed serving the PTSA here at Shiloh over the
last four years and working with you to make
a difference in OUR school and community. I
know that the new PTSA Board will continue
the tradition of serving with excellence.

Taste of
Shiloh 2012

Woo Hoo!
Another successful Taste goes down in
the history books of the Shiloh cluster. More
than 2,200 citizens enjoyed a car show, petted
horses from the Parkwood Farms Therapy
Center, purchased unique items from one of 51
shopping mall vendors, learned about services
that are available in our community from one
of 10 partners, and feasted at the tables of 33
different restaurants. This community event
is growing in size and scope each year and is
quickly becoming the premier Taste event in
Gwinnett County.
A big thank you goes to the North Georgia
MOPAR Club, the Christian Motorcycle Club
and our VIP guests who joined us on Saturday;
Representative Pamela Dickerson, Representative
Dar’Shun Kendrick, Dr. Bob McClure, Melvin
Everson and all the cluster principals.
If you are thinking about a graduation or
birthday party, family reunion, wedding or just
need a quick take-out feast, please think about
using one of the restaurants who provided
food and staff for the Taste of Shiloh. Many
restaurants were first-time participants and
have already told us, “They will be back next
year.” Thank you Shiloh Community for a
great turnout.

WORLD BOOK NIGHT
Thanks to World book night (http://www.us.worldbooknight.
org/), Ms Evans was able to donate twenty copies of The Absolutely
True Diary of a Part-Time Indian to twenty of her 9th grade Language
Arts students. The students were delighted with their gift, which
usually sells for around $10. “I love this book,” Ms. Evans explained,
“The story line is great, and the drawings are hilarious. I am so happy to
be able to give twenty of my students their own copy of this bestseller.
I hope this gift will lead them on a path of life long reading.”
Summer Reading Information
Summer Reading is a requirement here at Shiloh. All students, regardless of
grade or course level, are expected to complete the Summer Reading assignment for
the grade and course level they will be entering in August. Details can be found on
the school’s website: www.shilohhighschool.org
Why Do We Do Summer Reading?
1. Maintain and promote literacy skills
2. Engage in effective reading
3. Retain and refine skills that may otherwise be lost during summer months
4. Create and promote a culture of reading within the student body
What Does the Research Show?
Summer reading programs urge students to read during their summer vacations,
developing and maintaining a lifelong habit of reading for pleasure. Further, such
programs help students retain and sharpen literacy skills during the months that they
are out of the classroom (NCTE, 2010).
Research dating back 100 years confirms the phenomenon often referred to as
“summer slide.” Most youth lose about two months of grade-level equivalency in
mathematical computation skills over the summer months (National Center for Summer
Learning at Johns Hopkins University, 2009).
Two-thirds of the 9th-grade reading achievement gap can be explained by unequal
access to summer learning opportunities during the elementary school years; nearly
one-third of the gap is already present when children begin school (National Center
for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University, 2009).
One of the most commonly cited reasons for this[summer slide] is that students
simply do not have the literacy skills to keep up with the high school curriculum,
which has become increasingly complex (Kamil, 2003; Snow & Biancarosa, 2003).
70 percent of students entering the fifth and ninth grades in 2006 are reading
below grade level. 60 percent of twelfth graders perform below grade level (Carnegie
Corporation, 2004).
Reading is the single-most influential factor in critical thinking skills and sustained
student success in school across all curriculum areas.
Together we can help lessen that achievement gap and encourage our students
to reach higher than they thought they could. Let’s Lead by Example!
