a CARF-accredited stroke program at our Rehabilitation Center, and labor and

One of our goals is to reduce your wait time when coming into the hospital
for tests and procedures, making your experience more convenient. We
encourage all patients to pre-register for their services. There are two options
to register for tests and procedures.
Bill Payment
You can quickly and securely pay and keep track of your St. Joseph Hospital
bill online, as well as keep insurance information updated. All payment
information is kept secure and confidential and is processed via a secure
server. This feature is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Advance Directives
An advance directive allows you to live on your terms. Whether you’re 18 or
80, documenting your wishes today means your family won’t have to make
heart-wrenching decisions later. We encourage everyone to talk with their
family, their friends, their doctor. Know your options, decide what’s right for
you, and then put it in writing.
Advance directives usually tell your provider that you don’t want certain kinds
of treatment, or that you want a certain treatment no matter how ill you are.
Advance directives can take many forms. Laws about advance directives are
different in each state.
By creating an advance directive, you are making your preferences about medical
care known before you’re faced with a serious injury or illness. This will spare your
loved ones the stress of making decisions about your care while you are sick. Any
person 18 years of age or older can prepare an advance directive.
What is a living will?
A living will is one type of advance directive. It is a written, legal document
that describes the kind of medical treatments or life-sustaining treatments
you would want if you were seriously or terminally ill. A living will doesn’t let
you select someone to make decisions for you.
What is an advance directive?
An advance directive tells your healthcare provider what kind of care you
would like to have if you become unable to make medical decisions. A good
advance directive describes what kind of care you want if you have an illness
that you are unlikely to recover from, or if you are permanently unconscious.
What is a durable power of attorney for health care?
A durable power of attorney for health care (DPOAH) is another kind of
advance directive. A DPOAH states whom you have chosen to make health
care decisions for you. It becomes active any time you are unconscious or
unable to make medical decisions. A DPOAH is generally more useful than a

living will, but may not be a good choice if you don’t have another person you
trust to make these decisions for you.
Living wills and DPOAHs are legal in most states. Even if they aren’t officially
recognized by the law in your state, they can still guide your loved ones and
doctor if you are unable to make decisions about your medical care. Ask your
doctor, lawyer or state representative about the law in your state.
Health Care Provider Credentials
Medical School: In addition to an undergraduate degree, a physician must
complete four years of medical school at an accredited institution.
Residency: A residency is a required post-internship hospital training period of
two to six years that concentrates on a particular specialty. This indicates where
physicians did their residency.
Fellowship: A fellowship is a voluntary, post-residency training period of
two to six years. This indicates facilities where physicians did fellowships in
their special areas of interest.
APRN: Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (NP, FNP)
Nurse practitioners are nurses who hold a master’s degree in nursing.
Nurse practitioners can perform history and physical exams; diagnose
disease; order, perform and interpret laboratory, radiographic and other
diagnostic tests; and prescribe and dispense medications. They work
closely with physicians in their specialty area to provide comprehensive
care of patients.
CNM: Certified Nurse Midwife
Certified Nurse Midwives are advanced registered nurse practitioners
with additional comprehensive obstetrical and gynecological training.
In addition to maternity care and delivery they provide care of women
of all ages. They can order diagnostic tests, and prescribe treatments and
medications.
DO: Doctor of Osteopathy
A Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) completes four years of medical
school and is licensed to perform surgery and prescribe medication.
Osteopathic physicians receive an additional 300 to 500 hours in the study
of hands-on manual medicine and the body’s musculoskeletal system.
Osteopathic medicine is dedicated to treating and healing the entire patient
as a whole, and places special emphasis on the body’s musculoskeletal
system and preventative medicine.
DPM: Doctor of Podiatric Medicine
Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPMs) are physicians and surgeons who
practice on the lower extremities, primarily on feet and ankles. The
preparatory education of most DPMs includes four years of undergraduate
work, followed by four years in an accredited podiatric medical school,
followed by a hospital-based residency. DPMs diagnose and treat
disorders, diseases, and injuries of the foot and lower leg. They can
prescribe medications, order diagnostic tests or physical therapy.

Hospitalist: MD or DO
Hospitalists are medical doctors or doctors of osteopathy who specialize
in taking care of patients within the hospital. They work closely with the
primary care physicians and specialists to provide optimal care for each
patient during their hospital stay.
MD: Medical Doctor
A medical doctor has completed an undergraduate degree followed by
four years of medical school, and then a residency program. A residency
is done in the area of specialty chosen by the physician. The length
of residency varies by the specialty but is typically two to six years. All
physicians must then pass state licensure requirements and examinations.
The medical doctor will then achieve certification in their area of expertise
by the American Board of Specialties.
Psychologist: A clinical psychologist has completed 5–7 years of graduate
study, culminating in a doctorate degree. They may hold a PhD (Doctor of
Philosophy), or a PsyD (Doctorate of Psychology.) Licensing requirements for
psychologists vary from state to state, but at least a one- or two-year internship
is required to apply for a license to practice psychology.
Psychiatrist: Psychiatrists begin their careers in medical school. After
earning their MD, they go on to four years of residency training in mental
health, typically at a hospital’s psychiatric department. After completing
their residency, these physicians can be licensed to practice psychiatry. They
counsel and treat patient and can prescribe medications.
PA: Physician Assistant
Physician assistants are educated in intensive medical programs accredited
by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician
Assistant (ARC-PA).
Physician assistants (PAs) practice medicine under the supervision of
physicians and surgeons. PAs are formally trained to provide diagnostic,
therapeutic, and preventive health care services, as delegated by a
physician. Working as members of the health care team, they take medical
histories, examine and treat patients, order and interpret laboratory
tests and x-rays, and make diagnoses. They also treat minor injuries, by
suturing, splinting, and casting.
