ALAMO CITY WINGS
Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge!
From the Chapter Director, Sam “Brick” Reagle
Charles stomach has woken up! He is home again and has
finally started eating real food. This is major progress after
his cancer surgery 2 month ago.
February is usually a fairly quiet month, but not this month.
Our weekend rides have been great, as weather has been
surprisingly warm allowing a great turnout for our annual
Valentine’s Day ride. On February 17th, Mike and Pat
Pineda, Bob Smith and I rode out to Shertz to attend
Chapter U’s monthly gathering. They were celebrating
their 10 year anniversary so cake was present.
On February 20, Bob and I drove up to Denton to attend a
class to become trainers. Gillian and Cliff Allen supervised
as we tried to become smarter.
For those interested, Daytona Bike Week is March 4-13.
They call this because ‘Daytona Bike Week-and-a-Half’
doesn’t have the same ring to it. If you’ve never been, it
should be on your bucket list. We rode there for our Spring
Ride 3 years ago and continued on down to the southern
tip of the US in Key West, which is actually closer to Cuba
than to Miami. Perhaps we need to go again in the next
year or two.
Speaking of our Spring Ride, the board has selected April
21-25 for this years’ event. Mark your calendars and
request a couple of vacation days for this once a year trip.
Current rumor has it that there will be a train ride
incorporated into this fun long weekend.
NEW MEETING SPOT! After 10 years of monthly
meetings at Logan’s Roadhouse, your board of directors,
with the input from the membership has selected a new
location. Our March meeting will be at the Golden Corral
on Loop 1604 and Bandera Road. It’s in the same parking
lot as where we meet for our weekend rides, just a bit to
the east. Everyone who attends must pay for dinner. In
exchange, we get a really private room that can seat up to
50 and the fastest food service imaginable.
I will be in Oklahoma City on February 2th to referee a ruby
match and then will ride west to help the Las Vegas 7’s
International rugby tournament the first week of March.
This means that I will miss our first meeting at the Golden
Corral. Mike Pineda will take the reins that night.
Ride safe,
Brick

RIDERS EDUCATION, Bill Stein
FIRST AID/CPR COURSE
Have you thought about taking an online CPR
class? They are everywhere on the Internet:
seemingly legitimate organization offering
“instant” CPR or First Aid Certifications for busy
people who are required to hold a current
certification. And it often says right on the websites
that online-only CPR or First Aid Certification is
“nationally accepted”.
Well – this is definitely a case of caveat emptor or
more commonly referred to as “BUYER BE WARE.”
This is a situation where the online certification is
not nationally accepted. No major nationally
recognized training program in the United States
endorses certification without practice and
evaluation of hands-on skills. According to the
Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) online training alone does not meet OSHA
First Aid and CPR training requirements. Here are
some common buzzwords and phrases, which are
used to entice buyers who are online shopping for
training: “Online CPR cards download instantly”
“Download your certification right after finishing
your course” “No hands-on skills required” “100%
Online” “Immediate Certificate or wallet card”
“Have your certified card today” “Nationally
validated or nationally Recognized certification” –
NOTE: There is no nationally accrediting or
governing body for emergency care training. “Full
refund if not accepted”
HSI offers an accredited blended learning course.
Blended learning is a training delivery model that
combines online course content with in person
skills evaluation. Online-only training features no
hands on component. National crediting agencies
require hands-on practice and evaluation. Also,
Digital Certification Cards are not the same as
“Instant Cards.” A digital certification card is a PDF
formatted card or other electronic version of the
cards you earned in your training class. In a
legitimate training course (whether classroom or
blended format), you will be issued your
certification card (whether printed or digital) only
after demonstrating your understanding of course
content and successful, hands-on performance of
the techniques covered in the course.
When your local GWRRA Chapter offers a course
you can be assured that it will have the blessing of
the American Heart Association. This is the
granddaddy of such courses and that is why we
stay with them. Their course ID cards are accepted
anywhere as a legitimate record of you taking and
passing the course.
I will be announcing in March when and where we
will have our First Aid/CPR Course. We have
several connections now for having the course. We
can handle from eight to 16 riders and coriders per
training course. We are also trying to keep the
course cost down to $25 per each which really
makes it a value to all. I hope to have the first one
in April and it is already full. If enough people send
me an email we can have one each month.
GWRRA Rider Courses
You may have seen in the Wing World mag that if
you sent in your dues for 3016 early you could
receive a rider course CD. I paid 2016 and 2017
dues and got two programs. I am thinking we
could purchase more and that will be a big benefit
to our riders and coriders. Let me know if you like
this idea and we can incorporate the notional CDs
in with the programs we will be presenting.
Continued on page 6
Page 6
www.gwrra-txh.org
(Continued from page 5)
At the present time we are getting set up to have
one meeting per month that will last about two
hours at a location to be announced but close by
and have an educational meeting to help all
members to become better riders with more
knowledge to get back home safe. These courses
will start in April.
CLOCK TIME
It’s that time of year that we start thinking about
riding again. Some of you have parked the bike in
the garage and are getting ready to get the chain
saw out to cut the cobwebs. When you get it free
from the sticky stuff you might want to check all of
the fluids including the battery water/acid. If it is
low please use the additional acid that was
included or if you use water make sure it is distilled
water. You can use the leftover water in your
coffee maker. Check the tires for cracks and wear.
Take a good look at the valve stems just to make
sure they are not cracked or damaged. Test the
steering, check the controls to make sure they all
operate the way they should. Do all this before
you throw your leg over the bike. Yeap, here it
comes: CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE.
Please ride safe and we will see you next month.

A ride across twelve states, four regions, and two countries!
It's a ten day ride covering the breadth of the United States, including four regions, twelve states, and
two countries. The ride starts in Wilmington, North Carolina and ends in Chula Vista, California with
plenty of stops along the way, including a short ride across the U.S. border into Mexico and back. 40
To Phoenix has grown in popularity each year since the first in 2010, when 27 bikes showed up at
the Home Office in Phoenix, Arizona while passing through. Since then we've had years with over 250
riders and we're planning on a big group again this year!
Join fellow Members as they cross the U.S. meeting up at set locations and times. Start at the
beginning in Wilmington, North Carolina, or join up along the way. You can take the whole 2,700
mile journey or travel with us for just a bit. All are welcome!

HEADLIGHTS AND WHEELS
A Motorcycle rider pulls into a diner in upstate NY. Seats
himself and asks the waitress for 2 headlights and 2
wheels. The waitress who had just worked all night wasn’t
in a good mood, said “what are you talking about”. The
rider already tired but happy to relax at the diner said “Just
tell the cook, he’ll know what I mean”. But the expression
2 headlights and 2 wheels. By this time the waitress is mad
and yells back at the old cook, “I got this weird one out
here who thinks you’ll know what he wants if orders 2
headlights and 2 wheels”. Yeah I know what he wants,
yells the cook. He wants 2 eggs sunny side up and 2
pancakes. No problem. Well this just angered the waitress
even more than before. SO, just before the breakfast is
served to the rider, she walks up with a big plate of chili
beans and slams them down on the table. “Here, she yells
for all to hear”. Here’s your chili! But the rider who didn’t
order chili answers back. What is this for? The waitress is
ready for this, yells back “I thought you would want to gas
up before you took off”.
