At this week’s assembly we were able to highlight a number of significant student achievements that occurred late
last term, during the holidays and even this week. We are always delighted to be able to report on the
accomplishments of Aquinas students in their various fields of endeavour. Congratulations to the following teams,

The Under 14 Rugby League Cochrane Cup side: Southern Region Champions!!
This side now proceeds to the regional state playoffs

Ethan Stacy [Year 9] is representing Cronulla in the Baseball Junior World Series in Michigan,
United States in August, and has also recently been at a Major Baseball League [MLB] camp on
the Gold Coast that sees players trial for baseball scholarships in the US. We learnt last
Monday that he has been selected in the Australian Under 15 Baseball World Cup team that will
play in Iwaki, Japan next week. The Australian side will play Japan, Czech Republic, Cuba,
Columbia, and Korea in the round robin stage and we wish Ethan all the very best in that
competition where he will play short stop in the green a gold.

Blayke Brailey was playing for the NSWCCC Opens Rugby side in the Australians Championships
held @ Wynnum, Queensland during the holidays. Blayke’s side won the final against Queensland in a nail
biter, and shortly after the final Blayke was named Player of the Championships, a member of the Australian
Secondary Schools Rugby League Side, and then named as Captain of the Australian schoolboys. This is
Blayke’s second year in the Australian side and to be given the honour of captaining the Australian team is one
that he richly deserves. Well done Blayke!!

We hope to see as many supporters as possible at ‘Shark Park’ for the second test to support

The recent Year 7 – 10 exam period saw our Learning Support Team, led by Mrs Donlan and Mrs Barton, assist a
large number students in with a range of strategies to access their formal exams. I would also like to thank our
volunteers who acted as readers and or writers for our students. Their efforts also enabled students to perform at

The wonderful nature of our Catholic community has certainly come to the fore in recent weeks where there has
been enormous care and support shown when both are needed in times of great personal sorrow. Inevitably, death
touches us all and the loss of a family member is a terribly difficult event to cope with. In recent weeks we have had
the sad news that Mrs Hofrichter’s mother passed away, as did a great supporter of the College, Bernie Holdsworth,
President of Club Central. We have offered intentions for both Bernadette and her family and Laureen and the wider
Holdsworth family.
Today will also see the mass of celebration for the life of John Riley, father of Kate and father in law of Simon
Wilson. John has been a significant part of the College’s HSC classes for the past 10 years as our HSC Presiding
Officer. John has overseen both School Certificate and HSC exams at Aquinas for a decade and cared for our Year
12s as they sat all of their papers and dealt with the pressure that tests of that nature generate. His infectious
personality calmed them [as did his red frogs] and his redoubtable presence will be sorely missed. I was always
particularly taken by the way John was able to look after those students who were ill and incapacitated and allowed
them to be able to perform to the best of their ability under his careful tutelage. Our students have indeed been
blessed to have John watch over them.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Dear Parents and Carers
A recent article that appeared in The Daily Telegraph and in some local newspapers reported on significant
school fee increases for 2017 that have been announced for some schools in the Broken Bay diocese, north
of Sydney. These fee increases were in response to projected new ‘needs-based’ funding arrangements that
are likely to have an adverse effect for the Broken Bay diocese. It may have been interpreted from the
article that similar, large fee increases were also being planned for other dioceses including Sydney
Catholic Schools.
I want to reassure you that this is not the case. In 2014, I announced a differentiated school fees policy that
took into account the Socio Economic Status (SES) of the suburb each school is located when setting that
school’s tuition fees. This policy means that school fee increases vary slightly according to the SES of each
school. That policy has not changed. While fees have not yet been determined for 2017, the expectation is
that increases will again average out at about 5% across our 150 schools.
Please be assured of my continued commitment to ensuring that school fees and charges will always kept
to as low as possible, without ever compromising the quality of the learning and support that our schools
provide for their students.

Semester 1 – Academic Writing Excellence Class Booklets (AWE)
Students in Years 7 – 10 were given the completed copies of their AWE class booklets to take home last week. Please take the
opportunity to go through this outstanding resource with your child, and discuss the work that was completed. The Semester
Two booklets were distributed on Monday/Tuesday last week during Pastoral lessons.

Thank you to all parents/carers who battled the cold weather conditions for the parent teacher interviews at the end of last term.
These interviews were mandatory for all students. Year Coordinators will make contact with parents who did not attend the
interviews over the coming weeks regarding your child’s progress.

Year 10 into 11 Transition process and interviews for 2017/18 Stage 6 studies
Information packages, including re-enrolment forms were issued to all Year 10 students last term as part of the commencement
of the Year 10 into 11 Transition process for 2017/18 (Stage 6) studies.
20 minute Transition interviews were conducted in Week 1 of Term 3 (Tuesday 19 th July & Wednesday 20th July) with a
member of the Leadership team at the College.
Other key dates as part of Year 10 into 11 Transition include:

be obtained from Mr Roberts or the front office; these were due at the end of last term to the College office or Pastoral
teacher.
eLearning Update: Students are asked to check the advertisement attached to this newsletter
regarding the English and Mathematics Competition that runs for a week. An outstanding number of our
students received awards and prizes at our College Assembly last week for previously held competitions.
The bus company has asked us to remind parents/carers that a valid Opal Card must be presented
and Tapped ON and OFF when travelling to and from school. This week drivers have advised that
all cards will be checked for validity. Any student who does not have a valid card will be required
to pay the correct fare. Could I ask that you discuss this important process with your son/daughter
so that delays in departure are avoided.
Could I ask you to keep the twelve Aquinas World Youth Day 16 pilgrims in your prayers along with Ms Kilzi, Ms Flegg and
Mr Nastasi, the leaders of Bus 14 as they venture off on their pilgrimage to Krakow, Poland on Saturday July 16 th. There will be
an official Sydney Catholic Schools daily blog with short stories, photos and clips from the day from across all of the bus

On 16th July, myself, my fellow 11 pilgrims, Miss Kilzi, Miss Flegg and bus group leader, Mr Nastasi set off on a
journey of a lifetime. We departed Australia at 9:10pm with the 21 other pilgrims in our Bus Group, 14. After 14 long
hours we arrived in Dubai then travelled 6 more hours to Milan. Straight away we set off on a beautiful, scenic bus
trip for 3 and a half hours to finally reach our destination of Florence. Soon after at 10pm we gathered as a
community to join together in mass which marked the beginning of our faith filled pilgrimage.
Day 3 included a walking tour of Florence through the "Cradle of the Renaissance" featuring a visit to the Santa
Croce Basilica. We attended mass at the impressive Duomo of Santa Maria Del Fiore, which became the first mass
all six Florence pilgrim groups came together as one. After mass we were able to explore the city before departing
to Siena. We visited the Duomo and St Catherine's Sanctuary which allowed us pilgrims to absorb the culture and
engage further in our faith. In the late afternoon we reached the town of Assisi home of mystical St. Francis.
The following morning we pilgrims celebrated mass at the Basilica of St. Francis where our bus Chaplin Father
Daniel gave a memorable homily, connecting with each individual. Afterwards, we had free time to venture through
the town in the 37 degree heat. The refreshing taste of gelato has become a part of our regular daily routine as it's
safe to say we have tried all the flavours. The Basilica of St. Clare became a place of reflection, surrounded by
phenomenal views. After almost every pilgrim missing the taste of fresh produce, Mr Nastasi hunted down a
supermarket for us, where we all struggled to read the Italian labels. After an extremely long day, we went back to
our hotel, ate dinner then participated in group activities run by our Youth Ambassadors, James and Ellen. This
night became significant for many, as we were able to properly engage with each other developing new friendships.
At 6:30am, three boys and myself joined Miss Flegg and Mr Nastasi's "excercise class". During our hour run we ran
through the medieval city to the basilica of St. Francis where we stopped and prayed inside the door. This started
our day fresh and a certain 50 year old destroyed us all. Before leaving Assisi we attended mass in the Basilica of
Santa Maria Degli Angeli in the crypt. We then set off on a 3 hour bus trip to reach the wonderful city of Rome.
Arriving at our hotel, the majority of us pilgrims took the afternoon to relax and calm down by having fun together in
the pool.
Day 6 saw a 5am wake up call, which impressed us greatly, however eventually become worthwhile. We made our
way to The Vatican City to celebrate mass with Cardinal Pell in St. Peter's basilica at the Chair of St. Peter. The
stunning detailed architecture created peacefulness in the room and made for an exceptional mass. After mass and
a short tour, with helpful pointers from Father Daniel, we left the city and made our way to the iconic Colosseum and
the Roman forum. Once again we all struggled with the heat and copious amounts of walking, however the spirit of
bus 14 was as strong as always and we pulled through. With the leaders over concern for our health, they took it
upon themselves to visit the local supermarket and purchased salad supplies which were then given to us at dinner.
The next day started with a tour of St. Paul Outside The Walls, being one of the most significant basilicas in all of
Rome. Afterwards we had a chance to see the Catacombs which were used as places of refuge for the celebration
of the Eucharist. Mr Nastasi stayed at the back of the group, looking around ever corner with his phone torch on at
all times fearing his own shadow. We then hopped on the bus and attended mass in the first Christian church, the
Basilica of St. John in Lateran. Then we visited the Papal sanctuary of the Scala Santa (Holy Stairs) where 40 out of
42 pilgrims ascended in a kneeling position in prayer dedicated to Christ. This was the largest amount of
participation across all bus groups.
Our last day in Rome was spent celebrating mass at Domus Australia. We then proceeded to visit the Fontana de
Trevi, the Spanish Stairs and the Pantheon. This was followed by exclusive shopping in Rome before leaving for a
11:40pm flight to Warsaw.
So far my World Youth Day experience has been memorable, eye opening and allowed me to deepen my faith and
connection to God. The work, dedication and ongoing support of all the Pilgrim Group Leaders and Mr Nastasi
should be recognised and acknowledged. Without their commitment and encouragement, all of us pilgrims wouldn't
have been able to endeavour on this remarkable experience.
So far my World Youth Day experience has been memorable, eye opening and allowed me to deepen my faith and
connection to God. The work, dedication and ongoing support of all the Pilgrim Group Leaders and Mr Nastasi
should be recognised and acknowledged. Without their commitment and encouragement, all of us pilgrims wouldn't
have been able to endeavour on this remarkable experience.

Social Justice @ Aquinas
St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal
This term we will be selling hot chocolates twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays to
raise much needed funds for our local St Vincent de Paul.
For just $2 you will get a yummy Hot Chocolate, with a marshmallow to warm you up!
On sale at recess in the Nagle Paved.
Many thanks to the families of Jack Harris (Yr 9) and Michael Kerle (Yr 8) who have
donated supplies of cups and hot chocolate mix to assist the Social Justice Group with this
fundraising effort.
Families are also invited to use the St Vincent de Paul Clothing bin at the school to recycle
their clean, undamaged used clothes.
If you have cleaned out a wardrobe over the break, grown so much that nothing fits anymore,
or simply changed your style, please consider donating your unwanted items to the Clothing
Appeal.

Year 11 2017 Subject Selection Process
Last Tuesday and Wednesday saw the beginning of the re-enrolment process for the current Year 10 students who
will return as Year 11 in 2017.
Thank you to the many parents and students who attended the interviews to begin discussions about senior
enrolment. There were many celebrations to be had about current success and challenges issued for students who
need to make a more concerted effort, for the remainder of 2016, in order to meet the pre-requisites set for senior
study.
The next stage of the enrolment process takes place at the compulsory Information Evening this Wednesday night,
at 7pm, in the John Paul II Hall. Students will receive vital information as well as their subject selection handbooks
and application forms.
Thursday afternoon sees stage three, with a Subject Market in the Mackillop Learning Common from 3.30 until
5pm. Subject selection forms are to be returned to the College by Friday 5th August.
All Year 10 students who are re-enrolling must attend this Wednesday’s meeting, in full school uniform and with a
parent.

CLUB
Do you like Drama? Do you like being on stage? Do you want to try something new?
In Term 3 a brand new Theatresports Drama Club will be starting on Thursday lunch times in the Drama
Room. This program will be open to Year 7 and 8 students in Terms 3 and 4.
Theatresports is a spontaneous style of improvised theatre where teams of improvisers participate in a
variety of theatre improvisation games to win points. Each week students will learn improvisation skills
and play Theatresports games, ultimately culminating in a Theatresports Challenge at the end of each
term.
Theatresports is a great way to build confidence, use your imagination, learn drama skills, make new
friends and most of all, it is fun, hilarious and unpredictable! Even if you haven't done drama before, sign
up with a friend and prepare to laugh.

The Final Round of the Regional Catholic Schools Debating Competition
In Week 10 of Term 2, 11 students represented the College in the Final Round of the Regional Catholic
Schools Debating Competition. The Final was held at Marist Catholic College, Penshurst.

The topics were certainly challenging at this high level of the competition but our teams embraced this
challenge and approached the topics skillfully and with sophistication.

Unfortunately none of our Aquinas teams won their debates in the Finals, but they should all be
commended for their notable accomplishment of making it this far in the competition and being awarded
Runners-Up in their year groups.
Well done to all of the students who have represented Aquinas in Debating in 2016. These students will
be awarded for their achievements at a College assembly later this year.
Thank you to the many teachers who have supported the students in their Debating success this year;
Ms Morales, Mrs Capovilla, Mr Mollica and Mrs Lennon who coached the students and also Mrs Buttling,
Mrs Fensom and Miss Wilson who adjudicated throughout the competition. Thank you also to the

YEAR 9 AND 10 ELECTIVE HISTORY EXCURSION
On the last day of Term 2 the Year 9 and 10 Elective History classes ventured into the city to the Justice and Police Museum.
The students investigated, as historians, the infamous murder of Linda Agostini, known as the “Pyjama Girl” while examining
evidence from various primary and secondary sources. They watched a 1939 film on the event and evaluated its reliability as a
source and discussed perspectives presented by the media of the time. Students examined artefacts and documents relating to the
case, including forensic evidence found during the criminal investigation. Finally, the students recreated the 1944 trial of Antonio Agostini in the museum’s courtroom. Special thanks to:

Xavier Rozanc, Ben Ferraro, David White and Joshua Lane) took part in the local heat of the Interschool Chess Challenge at
Lucas Heights Community School.
The students battled it out against local high schools in a 7 round “Swiss” competition. They played seven games and the winning school was determined by adding the four highest scorers from each school. All the students played well, coming up
against some strong competition. I would like to congratulate all the boys on both their behaviour and sportsmanship; you are a
credit to the College!
I am pleased to announce the following results1st place in the secondary division: Jacob Harb
3rd place in the secondary division: Benjamin Capovilla
Overall winners of the secondary division: Aquinas Catholic College.
The regional semi-finals which will take place on Wednesday 24th August at the French School of Sydney, Maroubra and we
will be sending Jacob Harb, Benjamin Capovilla, Tony Hollmann, Jay Beaton and Michael Parsons to represent the College. We
wish them good luck and look forward to hearing about the competition.
I would also like to thank Ms Rundle who was kind enough to give up her time to drive the students to and from the venue on
the College minibus and supervise them for the day.

ENVIROWALK 2016

WHAT IS ENVIROWALK?
Envirowalk is an important community event in our school calendar and involves all students from Years 7 to
12. The main purposes of the day is to raise funds for a major school resource and also to contribute to our
local community by helping to clean up some of the beach areas from Wanda Sand Dunes to Shelley Beach.
Funds raised in 2016 will be used in the development of the new College prayer space.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Being a walkathon style event, the students are asked to raise money by seeking sponsorship for them to
complete the 10km event. Buses will transport the students to and from the walk site within normal school
hours, College sports uniform must be worn on the day. The students will walk in supervised groups and are
asked to bring gloves and a plastic bag and to wear hats and sunscreen.
Immediately after the walk a sausage sizzle and games afternoon will be held at Shelley Beach.
PARENT HELP REQUIRED
As the school grows larger, the success of the day relies greatly on the increasing support of as many
parents as possible. We require help with a number of activities from barbecuing on the day for over
1000 students, to the procurement of various items (Squeeze bottles of BBQ & Tomato Sauce and
disposable gloves. Could Year 7 students please bring Tomato Sauce).
Donations can be left at the College office from today.
If you are able to assist, it would be greatly appreciated if you could complete the attached form and
return it to the office as soon as possible.
Please note that raffle tickets are earned by students through the early return of money and also by
the amount raised. All tickets will go into a draw to win wonderful prizes.
