The New England Primer
With the distinction of being the first textbook printed in
America, The New England Primer was long implemented
as curriculum in American schools. Many of the Founding
Fathers and their children learned to read from this compact
manual, which couples literacy lessons with spiritual
catechisms. Our pocket-sized book is reprinted from a 1777
edition used in many schools from the Founding Era until the
twentieth century.
The Contemporary Alphabet Edition is also a faithful
reproduction of the 1777 New England Primer—with a
very significant exception. The letter “s” in the old English alphabet (represented
sometimes by an “s” and other times by an apparent “f”) has been standardized to
the single modern “s”. This change makes the valuable lessons contained in this book
easy to comprehend for children and adults alike.
