Guest Host Ben Marr
National Paddling
Film Festival 2015
Welcome fellow paddlers and lovers of rivers to
this, the 32nd annual National Paddling Film Festival!
My amazing staff of volunteers and I have put together
another fantastic event with delights to tantalize all of
your senses. We have films from exotic places near and
far and still images capturing magical moments that we
have all glimpsed at one time or another. (Don’t forget to
vote for your favorite still image!) We are lucky enough
to have the one and only Ben Marr as this year’s guest
host. I know you will enjoy the delicious local craft beer
and food options.
I would like to take a moment to recognize our sponsors and I hope you take time to appreciate what they
allow us to do. With your financial support through the
silent auction, these donors allowed us to give away over
$11, 000 last year alone. Overall, the NPFF has donated
over $135,000 throughout the history of the festival. We donate this money to organizations,
such as American Whitewater, that promote clean, free flowing rivers and ensure that we, the
paddlers, the anglers and anyone else with a love for rivers, has access to these national treasures. I take great pride in knowing that I am doing something that will benefit my children’s
children. I thank you all for your ongoing support in ensuring the rivers we love have the
protection they deserve. Please check out the silent auction. Bid early and bid often!
To maximize your enjoyment of the weekend, I have a few suggestions. First, take time
to explore this beautiful and historic distillery. There will be opportunities for tours and
bourbon tastings. Check out one of, if not the largest mass start downriver races in the US.
While this race is not affiliated with the NPFF it is still a whole lot of fun. Racers meet at
11:30 at the AW property on the Elkhorn Creek. Keep your ears open for information on
some amazing after show parties we have lined up. Come ready to get down! Lastly, be sure
to thank these amazing volunteers. The festival is a big group effort each year and we are
100% volunteer run.
Once again, I am so happy to have you here as our guest. Enjoy the films, the food and the
beer. Visit our vendor booths and show your appreciation for their ongoing support. Have
fun and stay very safe. If you have any questions or comments, please come introduce yourself and let’s chat.

Ben is from Brockville, Ontario and currently lives
in a trailer down by the Little White Salmon river
in Washington. He has won many kayaking awards
and is the first person to have a complete descent
of the Grand Canyon of the Stikine (and in doing
so was the first to run the notorious Site Zed rapid
successfully). We’re stoked to hear about what Ben
has been up to, what fuels him, and what he’s planning on tackling next.

2015 NPFF Judges
Bill Eades
Lifetime member and former president of the
Missouri Whitewater Association of water deprived boaters. ACA instructor for whitewater,
instructing mainly on-river clinics conducted
by the MWA. Easily the worst and oldest team
paddler and technical rep for Pyranha US, since
1996. Film judge for the NPFF since 1998. Associate Professor at Washington University School of
Medicine, directing a cancer center core laboratory for flow cytometry, involving critical light and
color measurements for fluorescent cell marking
and cell sorting.
Matt Muir
Matt "Rattso" Muir has been paddling whitewater since he bought a used Dancer in 1992. He
attended and judged his first NPFF ca. 1998, and
has been collecting Paddle Porn since. He also
helps keep the American Whitewater website
the best source of river beta on the World Wide
Internets.
Barry Grimes
Barry's 8mm film, "El Horrendo" provided the
inspiration for the establishment of the first National Paddling Film Festival in 1983. As a BWA
member/past president and a founder of the film
festival, Barry served as the NPFF Coordinator for
several years during the 1980s and 1990s and was
awarded the William Nealy Award in 2006. As an
accomplished photographer and videographer,
Barry has numerous whitewater films to his credit
including several winning NPFF entries.
Paul Martzen
Paul lives in Fresno California where he is a
professional photographer and amateur film
maker. Paul is married and has two grown sons.
He started whitewater kayaking in 1982 and has
explored many rivers, though mostly in California. Many of his whitewater photographs can be
found on the American Whitewater website. Paul
attended and helped out at the 2008, 2011 and
later NPFFs, which he enjoyed tremendously. He
is very happy to help the event again this year by
judging and critiquing the films.
Burgess Carey
Burgess is a whitewater paddler and consumer
of whitewater products since the early 1980's.
Sometimes a "has been" and always an armchair
athlete, past involvement in the BWA and NPFF
has resulted in much controversy and scurrilous
remarks. Professionally intent on changing the
world one outdoor venture at a time, Burgess is
the current steward of the Boone Creek Outdoors
project and when not watching paddling films can
often be found sleeping "Down by the River" in
his van.
Clay Wright
Clay is a creek boating and play boating pioneer
with numerous international "First D's" and
whitewater video appearances to his credit. He
won the 1997 World Championship in Squirt
Boating, 2005 National Championship in Freestyle as well as numerous extreme races including the original Green Race. He still competes in
races and rodeos but also serves as an ICF Judge,
USACK Rules Committee Chair, Keener Coach,
and was guest speaker at a previous NPFF.
Sellus Wilder
Sellus is an award-winning filmmaker and former
Mayor Pro Tem of Frankfort, where he lives with
his wife and two children. He is currently shooting a documentary on the controversial Bluegrass
Pipeline.
David Downing
David is a Glasgow, Ky native who graduated
from Western Kentucky University with a B. A. in
Broadcast Television. After working for the man
for the first five years, Dave decided to start his
own business in 2004. After expanding in 2008 he

decided to join forces with three friends and start
Yellowberri, a Bowling Green based advertising
agency. Six years later they have continued success
working in all aspects of multimedia as well as
side projects with music and film.
Nate Morguelan
While reasonably new to paddling, Nate has spent
the majority of his life behind a camera making
films and images of all kinds. After graduating
from WKU, he too, joined forces with Yellowberri
in Bowling Green, Kentucky to create professional videos and photos of all sorts. Having shot
and edited different films and photos for the last
several years, Nate relishes in the fact that judging
the work of other talented peers is almost as much
fun as creating the work itself.
Colin Doherty
Colin is a water addict, hailing from the salt
side growing up surfing in North Carolina and
California. He is pretending that his other lifelong
obsession of stalking trout with a fly rod gives
him enough water-reading street cred to judge
the paddling tribe. He was initiated into kayaking
last spring at the Bluegrass Wildwater Clinic, and
was thrown into vicious Class I rapids by Robert
Milgate, Hanley Loller, and Dot Edwards. Colin
brings 20 years experience working in film, having
shot everything from Old Spice spots to mayonnaise commercials. Colin recently worked at local
branding agency Bullhorn Creative, and now is on
the brand development team at Tempur + Sealy in
Lexington.

from his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama to barrier islands in the Gulf of Mexico. Hunter begins
his trip on the Cahaba River, renowned for its beauty and biodiversity. The voyage continues on to the
Alabama River, then through the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, and finally enters the Gulf of Mexico. Each of
these scenic waterways becomes a character in this inspiring film showcasing some of the last wild places
remaining in the South. As the voyage nears the Gulf Coast, powerful storms, alligators, sickness, and
pollution threaten to unravel this trip of a lifetime.

SUP: Leashes & Lifejackets - When to Wear, When Not to Wear The ACA’s new public service
announcement (PSA), SUP: Leashes & Lifejackets, makes it clear to stand up paddlers what types of
leashes and lifejackets are appropriate for different water venues. This five minute video is intended to
educate all those new to stand up paddleboarding (SUP), as well as those who have experience with the
sport but are unaware of leash and lifejacket best practices. Some of the rules and recommendations
regarding these pieces of equipment may surprise you.

Broadback The rivers that flow into the eastern shores of James Bay in Northern Quebec are mas-
sive. Follow paddlers Drew Sellen, Matt Hardy, and David Hartman as they paddle the final 120 kms of
the Broadback River during spring flows on this 7-day kayak expedition through the heart of black fly
country in Canada.
Kayaking the Aleutians No-one has succeeded in kayaking along the remote and stormy Aleutian
islands which stretch from Russia to Alaska. Explorers Justine Curgenven and Sarah Outen set to paddle
2,500km along the archipelago to the nearest road confronting more than 20 long crossings separating
the tiny unpopulated islands. Alone for 101 days in one of the windiest, roughest places on earth, the two
women are swept away from land by unknown currents, approached by bears and caught out by rough
seas. On an edge-of-your-seat journey, they gain a rare insight into the lives of the few people who live in
this harsh yet beautiful landscape.

titude from pride in big dams as engineering wonders to the growing awareness that our own future is
bound to the life and health of our rivers. Dam removal has moved beyond the fictional Monkey Wrench

prepared to leave for a two month expedition in Mongolia and Russia. This film documents their journey
along one of the few remaining free-flowing rivers of the world and through the complexities of love

Mexican Collection Over the winter break from school four amigos traveled down to Mexico, and
the jungles of Veracruz, to explore, laugh, be scared, and have a break from the bitter cold weather of the
states. What we found exceeded all expectations and provided for a trip of a lifetime.
Long Far & Wild Two years ago we tackled a style of kayaking that was completely new for us: "the
River Gypsy style." Drawn by the vast wilderness that is British Columbia, we sought out long rivers to
hone our team's ability to paddle long-distance down white-water rivers, carrying everything necessary
on board so that we could spend days or weeks at a time on the water and travel hundreds of kilometers
along amazing rivers and lakes...
This made us realize the possibility of going even further in the River Gypsy Style...in fact, that adventure
wasn't the end at all, it was only the beginning. Now we were primed to dream of going further...for longer...We began to wonder about the longest river of them all, about the most remote and untamed arctic
wilderness ...
The answer was obvious: the Mackenzie River, the entire whole Mackenzie River by kayak...

The Guides (History of the Upper Yough) The release of Wildwater West Virgina was a major
turning point for the Upper Yough. In the early 70's, the river was mostly boated by locals. But in the few
short years following the release of the book, boaters from across the country made the trip to Sang Run.
And by the end of the decade, the sport had a new, steeper path for boaters to travel. A path led by raft
guides from Ohiopyle, trying to find something to do on their day's off.

night before to 6.7/3000cfs. My friend Wes Brown had mentioned Wildcat creek as one of the options if
we got enough rain. There was some data provided off American WhiteWater but was dated 2008. There
were no videos produced other than one where some guys hiked up to the last rapid. With a mile hike
in the wilderness, little information, and the threat of downed trees everywhere we took a chance. This
video was the result of our little adventure that ended up paying off.
Paddler's Pilgrimage This is a film that celebrates the tradition and cultural importance of kayaking
in the Greenlandic culture. The film is seen through the eyes of Canadian paddlers James Manke and
James Roberts as they travel to the Greenland National Qajaq Championships and see firsthand why the
people of Greenland have thrived in one of the harshest climates in the world. The championships are
a yearly event where traditional knowledge is celebrated and passed down to younger generations and a
Qajaq Man and Qajaq Women of the year are crowned.

we will die." Odete Sobarza. The South American Country of Chile is one the World's most unique and
diverse countries. The citizens are some of the happiest and most grateful, despite large scale natural
disasters and foreign development. Paillalco is the story of the Puesco River Valley and the local Mapuche

deforestation and there rivers from Hydroelectric projects. We tell the story straight from the people who
depend on there connections with the natural environments, and the flowing of their rivers as much as

The National Paddling Film Festival’s
William Nealy Award
The William Nealy award is given to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achieve-
ment, exceptional contributions to the state of paddle sport arts and imagery, or for outstanding service to the National Paddling Film Festival. The focus of this award is to carry on the
original purpose of the National Paddling Film Festival, which includes encouraging those
who communicate in various art forms the enthusiasm that we have for paddling, the wonderful places where we paddle and the excitement and satisfaction we find in paddlesports.
The late William Nealy has occupied a special place in the BWA's collective heart for many
years. His early support of the NPFF included generous donations of original artwork which
greatly helped to raise the profile of the film festival. William also donated his time and opinions at several early film festivals by serving as a judge for the amateur entries. He was a cofounder and author of Menasha Ridge Press. He was a “whitewater rebel” who had a wonderful and imaginative mind. As a paddler you always knew the characters in his cartoons and
had lived and experienced what happened to them in his stories.
It was with these appreciative thoughts of William's creative genius, love of fun, and generosity
of spirit that we dedicated the 2002 NPFF to him and established the “William Nealy Award.”
It has been several years since this prestigious award has been given and it’s our honor to name
a new recipient at the festival on Friday evening!
Past Recipients of the William Nealy Award:
