Multisensory Structured Language Education The Orton-­‐Gillingham Approach to Teaching Reading, Spelling, and Writing Bridge from Basic to Advanced & Certified Key Learning Center, Asheville Learn the Orton-­‐Gillingham Approach in a Hands-­‐On Collegial Environment KLC’s Advanced Levels of MSLE Orton-­‐Gillingham Training The Advanced Level of Multisensory Structured Language Education – The Orton-­‐
Gillingham Approach addresses the language remediation of the older student with dyslexia and related language-­‐based learning challenges. This course is taught in two parts, Bridge from Basic to Advanced and Certified. The required prerequisite is the Basic-­‐Associate Level coursework. For participation in the Certified Level course, the completion of the Associate Level Practicum is highly recommended. Orton-­‐Gillingham Bridge from Basic to Advanced 25-­‐Hour Course July 14-­‐16, 2015 Course Overview: The Bridge Course is a follow-­‐up to the Basic – Associate Course. A comprehensive study of Key’s Level III sequence is presented with the focus on strategies for remediation of the older student. Syllables, syllabication rules, spelling rules and generalizations are reviewed as the bridge from phonology to higher level language skills. The morphological layer of English (prefixes, roots, and suffixes) and a sequence of morpheme instruction are introduced. This course is designed for practioners who have completed the Associate coursework and are ready to work with older students. It is a prerequisite to Certified. Course fee: $650 (Includes KLC manual, books, and supplies valued at $200) Orton-­‐Gillingham Certified – Advanced Level 55-­‐Hour Course – offered in July, 2017 Course Overview: The highest level course offered by KLC offers hands-­‐on assessment and teaching experience with an older student. Along with an in-­‐depth study of morphology, class participants will work in language learning teams with experienced O-­‐G tutors to prepare advanced level lessons that include comprehension and written expression components. They also observe experienced teachers working with older students. Prerequisites: Both Associate and Bridge. Completion of Associate Practicum is highly recommended. Course fee: $900 including materials and a 3:1 Trainee to Language Coach ratio for student teaching Registration & Questions: Contact Concha Wyatt at [email protected] or 274-­‐0757, ext 405 Bridge from Basic to Advanced Course Content Creating a bridge from basic phonology to higher level language concepts • Characteristics of the older student with language –based learning challenges • Review of Basic Level III skills, syllables, syllabication, spelling rules and generalizations, and the structural analysis of language • Morphology (prefixes, roots, and suffixes) sequence of instruction and teaching strategies with hands-­‐on activities and modeling of a lesson • Application of knowledge of the history and structure of English to teaching reading spelling to the older student and • Overviews of: systematic grammar and structured writing instruction and screening of the older student to determine an instructional starting point Certified – Advanced Level Course Content Comprehensive hands-­‐on teaching experience in a learning community • •

The Advanced Multisensory Lesson – weaving multiple layers of language instruction into the lesson using age-­‐appropriate techniques including study skills and case management Practice with language assessment and the teaching of five individualized advanced lessons with coaching and feedback Developing a Student Profile – an in-­‐depth student report that includes test interpretation and development of an individualized learning profile report Observation of demonstration teaching lessons and p eer observations in the language learning team Registration for BRIDGE 2015: The registration deadline is April 30, 2015. Courses are filled on a first-­‐come, first-­‐served basis.
